WICHITA HIGH SCHOOL EASTIB NEWSLETTERVOLUME 3, NEW SERIES ISSUE 3MAY 2011FROM IBPA PRESIDENT, DEIRDRE O’FARRELLCONGRATULATIONS, Class of 2011!As I look forward to attending thecollege graduation of my oldest daughter,Maeve, I wistfully think back on attendingher East High commencement ceremonyin 2007, and I am reminded againof how quickly the years of parenting flyby. I am also reminded of the major contributionthat East High, and particularlythe IB Program, has made in her growthand development from young teenager toadult. Our family will always be gratefulto the many remarkably dedicated individualsat East High who contributed toshaping our daughters‘ lives. On behalfof the IB Parent Association, I would liketo express my gratitude to the four membersof the Board of Directors who willbe rotating off the board as their childrengraduate this month: Will Klunder, DeeMarsh, Betsy Redler, and ElizabethWilkes. Collectively, they have contributedcountless hours to make our parentassociation a vibrant source of support forthe IB Program. We have all learned fromtheir example, but they will be sorelymissed. I would also like to welcome ournewly elected President, Jay Voncannon.Jay, whose son Will is a rising Junior, brings his dynamic leadership (and a distinctiveTexas twang) to the role of ―ChiefRat Wrangler.‖ I know the organization isin good hands with Jay holding the reins! And last but not least, I would like tothank all of you fellow IB parents for yourparticipation and support of this fine program.Be a part of it… it will fly by!FROM IB COORDINATOR, STEVEN SHOOKWhat’s Shaping up on the East High Campus? The new supplemental gym and swimming pool are well on their way to beingcompleted. Students will be able to use these two new buildings beginning in theFall. This Summer, the restrooms in the West complex will be renovated. Thesecond phase of construction involves the transformation of the ―old West gym‖into a new Fine Arts theatre. A new wing addition will connect the current Westcomplex (Old Roosevelt Junior High) to the new Fine Arts theatre, resulting in anew set of classrooms for the vocal and instrumental music programs. This phaseof construction is due to be completed and ready for students by the beginning ofthe 2012-13 school year.Summer Reading?See page 4The IB Newsletter is available to allIB families and is published everyOctober, February, and May.Material should be addressed on orbeforeSeptember 15, January 15, andMay 5 by email toMary Shepard,shepardsteiner@aol.comIB NEWSLETTER EDITORIALBOARDMary B Shepard, EditorDeirdre O’Farrell, IBPA PresidentSteven Shook, IB CoordinatorWichita High School East2301 E. PAGE 2IB NEWSLETTERWhat Goes In That College Folder?Mr. Gallagher and Mrs. Fry have introduced the college search and college application process in Junior IB Englishclasses during the month of May. Students kicked things off by watching the helpful DVD, ―Ten Steps to Collegewith the Greenes,‖ followed by several days of classroom instruction pertaining to the overall search and applicationprocess. Additionally, all Juniors attended a lunch-time panel conducted by eight current Seniors who shared theirpersonal ―journeys‖ in the college selection process. Students are now reading and discussing How to be Irresistible toColleges. Parents are strongly encouraged to read this book as well, as it provides an excellent overall explanation ofthe college selection and application process. Additionally, students are writing resumes and college essays. Mr.Gallagher and Ms. Fry will meet with students again in August to finalize college folder requirements.College folders are due September 19 to students‘ respective college advisers: Mr. Gallagher, last names A-L, andMs. Fry, last names M-Z. Folders should include:Completed College Application Grid: list of schools to which a student plans to apply and the deadlinesand application requirements for each schoolDetailed resume, typedPersonal statement/essay (1-2 page typed, for advisor‘s personal reference only)Completed ―Information Worksheet‖College Recommendation Confidentiality WaiverParent Response Form (optional, but helpful and strongly recommended)Transcript Release Card signed by parentsCopies of ACT, SAT, PSAT, AP, IB scoresRecommendation Forms. The East High class of 2012 might be the first to submit all or most of their materialselectronically. Colleges and the Common Application (commonapp.org) have requested electronicsubmissions for a few years, but the addition of eTranscript through Docufide(securetranscript.docufide.com) will largely eliminate the need to mail transcripts, saving time andmoney. Once students are trained on the registration process, they will be able to request transcripts to besecurely transmitted to the Common Application and participating colleges. All other mailing requests (thosewho do not participate in Common Application or Docufide) require the materials listed below:9 x 12 ―grip seal‖ envelopes AS NEEDED (See college advisor about online submissions)Extra stamps (minimum of 3 per large envelope) if neededCounselor recommendation forms, also called secondary school reports, paper-clipped to correspondingenvelopeMid-year report forms AS NEEDEDA Window on CASUna ventana Abierta a CASThis year, IB students teamed up with Spanish Honor Society, under Señor Dave Shelly, to work with the organization Caritas, based in Cuzco, Peru, on projects benefiting indigenous communitieshigh in the Andes mountains. Cate Dunn, following up oncontacts made during a trip to Peru last summer, organized theefforts. Participating IB students helped to raise funds by sellingpizza and nachos throughout the year. Handcrafts from Peru werealso sold at the Alternative Gifts Fair. One particularly rewardingactivity was to provide uniforms for the youth soccer team from alocal school in Chacabamba, Peru. Here, you see Kim Rex, acharity representative, delivering the new jerseys.

NEW SERIES VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3PAGE 3TAKING CHARGE OF CAS AND THE EEby Steve ShookCreativity, Action & Service (CAS), together with the Extended Essay (EE), need regular, ongoing emphasis fromIB students. It‘s analogous to regular automobile maintenance. A portion of the driving population change theircar‘s oil on a regular schedule; they have an understanding about and value preventive maintenance. There arethose who drive automobiles that rely more on the ―idiot-light‖ notification system. They believe that the illuminatedlight on the dash is the designated reminder, rather than a warning that certain vehicle systems need immediateattention. Then, there are vehicles that have made the maintenance responsibility of automobile ownershipnearly ―idiot-proof‖ with progressive messaging systems, reminding the driver of ―time‖ or ―miles‖ remaining untilneeded servicing. And some people ignore all forms of reminders and eventually allow their vehicles to suffer undueinternal damage.Human nature being what it is, the same attitude and approach described for automobile owners can also be seen inPIB/IB students with respect to CAS and the EE. Without there being a specific class/course (i.e., a progressivemessaging system) associated with these IB requirements, students are left up to their own prioritization of requirementsand deadlines. Consequently, a noticeable number of students rely upon messages and notes posted on classroomdoors, in the hallways, or personally delivered to them with specific prompts about these two important IBrequirements. As the metaphor with car maintenance points out, even the prompting of ―idiot lights‖ (appropriatelyregarded) is sometimes ignored by the individual most likely impacted by the failure of a system. Either of these twoprogram requirements, if left unattended, can negatively affect IB diploma completion. On the one hand, we will continue in our efforts to automate the processes related to CAS and the EE and to makingthe submission of material more streamlined. First and foremost, CAS and EE requirements and due dates areposted on the IB Program Web site and are updated on a regular basis. At the same time, parents and guardians can also help transform these requirements into meaningful, purposefuloccurrences that are gradually infused into the person of each IB student. One thing that families can do to increasethe intrinsic aspect of these two requirements is to find ways to make them a family investment. Consider severalfamily members joining in on CAS activities, whether as equal participants or in supporting roles. Engage in conversationswith your student, ask questions about any number of events or subjects they might be studying and poseinquisitive ―how does that relate to…‖ or ―what would happen if…‖-type reflections for your rising Seniors. Takethe opportunity to engage students in mental badminton while driving around town or traveling together; inparticular, pose questions and prompt clarification on points or ideas involving both CAS and the EE. In the IBOffice, we often do this in hopes of prompting students to refine their thoughts as reflected in their essay. I believeit has a positive impact on our relationships and adds validation to what our students are trying to accomplish. Forcurrent juniors, this is exactly the right time to be doing this; there should be quality attention given to theExtended Essay right now.In the end, if students are left to completing these two requirements in isolation, they will likely remain isolatedrequirements without any life-long meaning. Students will scoff at the reminders, dismiss our warnings, and carrylittle, if any, of the priceless value of CAS and the EE into their college experience. The rationale for due dates is to help students pace their CAS efforts and to enable staff who monitor the submissionsto schedule accordingly. Failure to adhere to the specified dates creates undue stress. Parents — please encourageyour student to help us help them! Please remember that due dates are readily available on the Web site, together withdigital copies of the current CAS submission forms. Ms. White and Ms. Hutton, as well as Mr. Shook, are alwaysavailable to provide direction on and clarification of CAS criteria, as outlined by IB.
