Newsletter<strong>March</strong> – May 2013THE CHAIRIt has been a busy time over the past few months and keyactivities are highlighted in this Newsletter that include:- HWA Reports and Publications released- Statewide Discipline Forum- Masterclass Clinical Supervision Workshop- ‘Get Ready’ Pilot Program- Local Project ActivitiesChris CrawfordChairHWA UPDATES AND PUBLICATIONSFuture Directors Discussion PaperIn January 2013, HWA released a discussion paper on thefuture directions of Integrated Regional Clinical TrainingNetworks, called <strong>ICTN</strong>s in NSW.The paper outlines the importance of maintaining localproject and administrative support for the networks to betterunderstand clinical placement supply, demand and capacityat the regional level and find practical solutions to expandcapacity.The role of IRCTNs in facilitating local level engagement withthe Clinical Supervision Support Program (CSSP) and theSimulated Learning Environments (SLE) program was alsohighlighted.It is proposed that IRCTN funding will continue from July2013 to June 2016. NSW <strong>ICTN</strong>s welcome this opportunityto continue evolving its significant role in providing strategicadvice, direction and support to our stakeholders.National Medical Training Advisory NetworkHWA has published a discussion document on essentialelements of a coordinated medical training system andfunctions of the network, including the approach to producingfive-year rolling medical training plans. HWA soughtfeedback on the document and further information can beobtained at: hwaconnect.net.au/nmtan/Nurses in focusNurses in focus provides a comprehensive analysis of Australia’snursing workforce using latest available information, in one easy-toreadreport.It draws together information from the National Health WorkforceDataset: nurses and midwives 2011, the Australian Institute ofHealth and Welfare nursing and midwifery labour force surveys, theDepartment of Immigration and Citizenship, the Department ofInnovation, Industry, Science, Research and Tertiary Education andthe National Centre for Vocational Education and Research.Download Nurses in focus (1.3 MB).Nursing retention and productivityInput is being sought on potential retention and productivitystrategies that tackle Australia’s projected nursing shortfall.The strategies are outlined in a consultation paper which will formpart of HWA’s nursing retention and productivity study.Feedback received from the consultations will contribute to anevidence-based final report.To get involved in the consultation, visit hwaconnect.net.au/nwrp/CSSP National Clinical Supervision Skills InitiativeHWA’s Clinical Supervision Support (CSSP) is developing a NationalClinical Supervision Skills Initiatives (Skills Initiative) that will delivera range of interprofessional clinical supervision education andtraining opportunities for new and existing clinical supervisors acrossAustralia, facilitated by the <strong>ICTN</strong>s.The National Clinical Supervision Competency Resource (theResource) provides the foundation for the Skills Initiative by enablingthe development of a consistent, transparent approach to providequality interprofessional clinical supervision education and training.To support the Skills Initiative, HWA is establishing a Multi Use List(MUL) of Education and Training Providers (Providers) with provenexperience in the delivery of interprofessional clinical supervisionand training who can demonstrate alignment for the Resource. <strong>North</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>ICTN</strong> Newsletter <strong>March</strong> - May 2013Effective Clinical Placements in Rural and RemotePrimary Care SettingsHWA has published a report entitled “A Framework forEffective Clinical Placements in Rural and Remote PrimaryCare Settings” as part of the final stage of the ResearchCollaboration by the Australian Health Workforce Institute.The report presents key requirements for effective clinicalplacements in rural and remote primary care settings andhow these could be adapted to and are transferable toother settings.The framework for effective clinical placements in rural andremote primary care named the Clinical LearningEnvironments Evaluation Framework (CLEEF), featuresnine essential elements for effective placement: anorganisational culture that values learning, effective clinicalpractice, a positive learning environment, a supportivehealth- service training provider relationship, effectivecommunication, appropriate resources and facilities,effective inter-professional learning, a safe workingenvironment and quality supervision.The findings of the report will assist both universities andplacement providers to deliver high quality rural andremote clinical placements for students.The report can be accessed on the HWA website:https://www.hwa.gov.au/sites/uploads/ClinicalPlacementFrameworkDoc_WEB.pdfFor more information, please contact:Ryan Kennedy, HWA Senior Project OfficerP 08 8409 4585M 0421 631 967ryan.kennedy@hwa.gov.auNSW<strong>ICTN</strong> DISCIPLINE FORUMThe inaugural <strong>ICTN</strong> Statewide Disciplines Forum, heldin Sydney on 23 April 2013, identified issues andformulated possible solutions to improve clinicalplacement and training in NSW. A total of 81Nursing/Midwifery, Medicine and Allied Healthrepresentatives from all NSW <strong>ICTN</strong> AdvisoryCommittees participated in the forum.Participants discussed the following statewidepriorities for clinical training in NSW:workload and competing prioritiescollaboration and coordinationnew and expanding settingsculturesupervisioninfrastructureParticipants worked in discipline-specific groups toselect priority areas most relevant to their discipline;identify challenges faced by their discipline in thisarea; and formulate potential strategies to addressthese challenges.Group discussions brought out a number of commoninterdisciplinary themes:importance of fostering a culture that supportsclinical training and supervisionensuring the quality of clinical placementsneed for data collection/mappingexpansion of administration systems forrecording and sharing of clinical placement datauncertainty of fundingThe forum concluded with participants identifyingpossible action plans to improve clinical placementand training in NSW. The threeTweed Project facilitatorsJaymie Hall (Social Work),Michael Mifsud (Nursing) andMichael Noonan (Medical)attended the <strong>HETI</strong> trainingsession held in Sydney in <strong>March</strong>2013.There were 26 studentsrepresenting medical, nursing,OT, social work andphysiotherapy participating inthe pilot program.Michael“Lifeguard” Mifsudacts out a scenarioin the simulationtrainingThe ‘Get Ready Program is adedicated inter-professionaltransition training program forstudents during their last year ofpre-graduate study.A component of the programincludes scenario-based trainingin simulated environments for the management of common medical emergencies.This program provided the students with practical opportunities to demonstrateand enhance communication skills when working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. The clinic will be established incollaboration with Southern Cross University and NNSWLHD and will initially includeoccupational therapy, exercise physiology, speech pathology, podiatry and pedorthics.Other disciplines will be included as appropriate.Final Projectreports will befeatured in thenext NewsletterThe Tweed Healthy SchoolsProject Lead: The T5 Tweed School GroupThis project seeks to establish an interdisciplinary student health team model that will beprogressively implemented into the T5 Group of Schools, located in the South TweedRegion of NSW. The pilot will include: Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology,Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology.NC<strong>ICTN</strong> – Clinical Supervision ProjectsCustomising Cert 4 Training and Assessment for Clinical SupervisorsProject Lead: <strong>North</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> TAFEThe project will provide a pathway for clinicians to gain both skill and recognition for theirclinical supervision. The project offers three learning options:Participating in a supervision skills training workshop.Becoming a workshop Facilitator “Teaching on the Run”.Gaining a nationally recognised Certificate of Attainment in 2 units from the Cert. 4Training and Assessment qualificationThis is a collaborative project UCRHNC, University of New England and University ofNewcastle.Enabling Clinical Supervisory SkillsProject Lead: Griffith UniversityThe project will develop and evaluate learning packages for the continuing education ofclinical supervisors who are supervising entry-level allied health students in physiotherapy,occupational therapy, speech pathology and exercise physiology. The overall aim will be todevelop inter-disciplinary training in a collaborative manner across four allied healthprofessions.
