North Coast ICTN Newsletter March - May 2013Effective Clinical Placements in Rural and RemotePrimary Care SettingsHWA has published a report entitled “A Framework forEffective Clinical Placements in Rural and Remote PrimaryCare Settings” as part of the final stage of the ResearchCollaboration by the Australian Health Workforce Institute.The report presents key requirements for effective clinicalplacements in rural and remote primary care settings andhow these could be adapted to and are transferable toother settings.The framework for effective clinical placements in rural andremote primary care named the Clinical LearningEnvironments Evaluation Framework (CLEEF), featuresnine essential elements for effective placement: anorganisational culture that values learning, effective clinicalpractice, a positive learning environment, a supportivehealth- service training provider relationship, effectivecommunication, appropriate resources and facilities,effective inter-professional learning, a safe workingenvironment and quality supervision.The findings of the report will assist both universities andplacement providers to deliver high quality rural andremote clinical placements for students.The report can be accessed on the HWA website:https://www.hwa.gov.au/sites/uploads/ClinicalPlacementFrameworkDoc_WEB.pdfFor more information, please contact:Ryan Kennedy, HWA Senior Project OfficerP 08 8409 4585M 0421 631 967ryan.kennedy@hwa.gov.auNSWICTN DISCIPLINE FORUMThe inaugural ICTN Statewide Disciplines Forum, heldin Sydney on 23 April 2013, identified issues andformulated possible solutions to improve clinicalplacement and training in NSW. A total of 81Nursing/Midwifery, Medicine and Allied Healthrepresentatives from all NSW ICTN AdvisoryCommittees participated in the forum.Participants discussed the following statewidepriorities for clinical training in NSW:workload and competing prioritiescollaboration and coordinationnew and expanding settingsculturesupervisioninfrastructureParticipants worked in discipline-specific groups toselect priority areas most relevant to their discipline;identify challenges faced by their discipline in thisarea; and formulate potential strategies to addressthese challenges.Group discussions brought out a number of commoninterdisciplinary themes:importance of fostering a culture that supportsclinical training and supervisionensuring the quality of clinical placementsneed for data collection/mappingexpansion of administration systems forrecording and sharing of clinical placement datauncertainty of fundingThe forum concluded with participants identifyingpossible action plans to improve clinical placementand training in NSW.
