Whileat Cambridge he won the Henry Bond Prize for Romanlaw and the Trinity Hall Prize.Frorn 1950-1953 he was a student of the MiddleTemple and \\'8S called to the English Bar in 1953.He was awarded the Blackstone Pupillage Prize (MiddleTemple) in ]9:0;3 and the Harmsworth Scholarship(Middle Temple) in 1953-1956.Professor Allan lectured at technical colleges and theManchester College of Commerce until 1957, when hespent two years at the Law Society School in Blackpoollecturing in Legal System, Criminal Law, Contract andConstitutional Law.In 1959 he came to Australia. Until ]963 he was asenior lecturer in law at the <strong>University</strong> of Western Australia.He moved from there to take the chair ofCommercial Law at the Victoria <strong>University</strong> of Wellington,New Zealand, before his appointment at the<strong>University</strong> of Tasmania.Professor Allan has been a member of a number ofLaw Reform Committees in Australia and New Zealand.His major fields of interest are Commercial Law andContract, Equity, and Legal History. In 1968 he publisheda research project on Contract Law for Asiancountries. He has also published a book and a largenumber of papers. Currently he is carrying out researchon 'Development financing in Asia'.Professor Allan, who is married and has three children,took up his appointment in January 1969.SFCOND CHAIR OF MEDICINEProfessor Barry George Firkin was appointed to<strong>Monash</strong>'s second chair of Medicine, located at AlfredHospital. He took up the position at the start of firstterm this year.Professor Firkin graduated from the <strong>University</strong> ofSydney as Bachelor of Science (Medicine) with honoursin 1952. Later, in 1954. he was awarded the degrees ofBachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery withhonours.During the years 1955~57 he was a research fellow atthe Clinical Research Unit, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.Sydney. From there he went to the <strong>University</strong> ofWashington as fellow in Medicine with the departmentof Medicine. He returned to the <strong>University</strong> of Sydney in196 L where he was senior research fellow in the departmentof Medicine until 1963. He held the positionProfessor B. G. FirkinProfessor J. N. Crossleyof director of the Clinical Research Unit at Royal PrinceAlfred Hospital concurrently. He remained in the latterposition until his appointment to <strong>Monash</strong>.In the years immediately prior to his coming to<strong>Monash</strong> he was, also, associate professor in Medicineat the <strong>University</strong> of Sydney and Visiting MedicalSpecialist at the Repatriation General Hospital. Concord.He is a member and fellow of several medical associations,and in ]967 was the Australian Councillor to theInternational Society of Haematology.Professor Firkin's major research interest is in thefield of haematology.SECOND CHAIR OF PURE MATHEt.lATICS<strong>Monash</strong> appointed Dr John Newsome Crossley tothe second chair of Pure Mathematics; he took up thisposition on 16 May this year. Professor Crossley who,prior to his new appointment, was a lecturer in mathematicallogic and fellow of All Souls College, Oxford,came to <strong>Monash</strong> for a short while in ]968 as VisitingLecturer.In 1960 Professor Crossley was awarded an honoursdegree in mathematics at Oxford. Later, in 1963, hewas awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy for a thesisentitled Some Problems in Mathematical Logic.He held the position of Merton Tutorial Fellow inMathematics at St. Catherine's College, Oxford, from1963 to 1965.He went to Cornell <strong>University</strong> in 1966 and to the<strong>University</strong> of California, Los Angeles, in 1968 as VisitingAssociate Professor.In 1968 the Association of Symbolic Logic appointedhim to their Council.He is currently developing the theory of recursiveequivalence types of algebraic structures.Professor Crossley's wife, Dr Stella Ann Crossley.is also at <strong>Monash</strong> as lecturer with the department ofPsychology. They have two children.CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ~IEDICINE<strong>Monash</strong> appointed Professor Wallace Ironside to thenew chair of Psychological Medicine, which is situatedat Prince Henry's Hospital. He took up the position on19 May this year.Immediately prior to his appointment at <strong>Monash</strong>,Professor Ironside had been Foundation Professor ofPsychological Medicine at the <strong>University</strong> of Otagomedical school since 1962. During this time he wasalso chief of Psychiatric Services for the Otago Hospitalboard. and a member of the Board of Censors of theAustralian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.Professor Ironside, who received his medical trainingat the <strong>University</strong> of Aberdeen, served with the BritishArmy from 1941 to 1946. In late ]943 he was appointedmedical adviser in mountain warfare for the BritishCentral Mediterranean Forces.He was senior lecturer in Psychiatry at the <strong>University</strong>of Leeds from 1949-1952. Then, in 1952, he first wentto Otago as a senior lecturer in Psychiatry.He was awarded a Fulbright Research Scholarship in1959, and was appointed assistant professor in Psychiatryat the <strong>University</strong> of Rochester, New York, in 1960.Professor Ironside's research interests are in infantbehaviour disorders with their implications for childdevelopment, family structure and dynamics. and theirpossible relationships to later psychiatric illness.He is married and has two d<strong>au</strong>ghters.38
