4 . THE VIRGIN MOTHER OF GOOD COUNSELits estension it was by means <strong>of</strong> a most strikingand significant miracle. A beautiful Image <strong>of</strong> His<strong>Mo<strong>the</strong>r</strong> holding <strong>the</strong> Divine Infant in Her sacred arms,passed from a land just taken by <strong>the</strong> Turks to <strong>the</strong>very spot where <strong>the</strong> <strong>Virgin</strong> <strong>Mo<strong>the</strong>r</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Good</strong> <strong>Counsel</strong>had been hoeoured for over a thousand years. <strong>The</strong>translation <strong>of</strong> this Image was eg'ected without humaninterferenoe and amidst many prodigies. It naturallycreated a widespread and deep impression at <strong>the</strong>time. On a festival, it appeared amidst a multitudein <strong>the</strong> public square, and rested near <strong>the</strong> wall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>church where it still remains. <strong>The</strong> fervour it createda~ongs<strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>the</strong> graces, <strong>the</strong> consolationr, and <strong>the</strong> miraculous favours obtained at its Shrine,continue to this day. It has thus become <strong>the</strong> fountain<strong>of</strong> devotion to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Virgin</strong> <strong>Mo<strong>the</strong>r</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Good</strong> <strong>Counsel</strong> forall <strong>the</strong>* faithful <strong>of</strong> Christ, in all <strong>the</strong> lands which owntbe sway <strong>of</strong> His Vicar on earth.4. <strong>The</strong> writer has <strong>the</strong>refore entered very fullyinto <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> this sacred Image; and .<strong>the</strong> reader,to become convinced <strong>of</strong> a fact so extraordinary as itswonderful translation from Scutari in Albania to Genazzano,must have <strong>the</strong> patience to read what he haswritten on that point. All that is said, is proved byfacts as well au<strong>the</strong>nticated as any o<strong>the</strong>r facts <strong>of</strong>past history. And here a possible thought may bemet. <strong>The</strong> reader lqay never have heard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mir-a~le before. He may deem such an occurrenae strangeand unaccountable. He may perhaps, be somewhatinfluenced , although unoonsciously , by that atmasphere<strong>of</strong> incredulity which surrounds <strong>Catholic</strong>s in allEnglish speaking lands, and which is prone, whilePRIVATE USE ONLY
