Only bonafide Allen Parish 4-H club members are eligible to participate in 4-H club contests.2. All record books are due March 14th. Insect and forestry collections will be brought by club membersto Achievement Day.4. All articles submitted for Achievement Day competition must be claimed and brought home by theirowners on Achievement Day. The agents and leaders will not be responsible for articles that are notclaimed at Achievement Day contest.5. All club members taking part in any contest will be required to have their own pencils at AchievementDay.6. ALL RECORDS must be turned in by March 14th.7. 4-H members to compete in the State Contest held at 4-H University in Baton Rouge during thesummer will be chosen from the six (6) placing of the parish contest.(a) To compete in the State contest the club member must have passed his or her 14th birthdayand must not have passed their 19th birthday on January 1st of this year.(b) To compete in the State Contest the 4-H member must have completed at least one (1) yearof club work including current year.(c) In certain 4-H University contests, contestants that have passed their 13th birthday and notpassed his 19th birthday by January of current year are eligible to compete. These Juniormembers will be considered for 4-H University.8. Elementary and Junior awards will be awarded as follows: First, Second, Third and three HonorableMentions.9. Honorable Mentions. All placing will be eligible to compete in the state contest; however, the agentswill select the 4-H U contestants.

Contestant should be enrolled in the 4th or 5th grade project.2. Bird houses will be judged. Bring to Achievement Day.(Must be a newly constructed bird house and/or feeder to enter contest)3. Elementary will identify 20 birds from study guide.CONSUMER Decision Making (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to all 4-H'ers.2. Contest will evaluate 4 products (ex. tooth brushes, paper plates, hair spray). There will be fourdifferent brands for comparison. The contestant must select the most appropriate one for thesituation given.CLUB REPORTER (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Each local club reporter may enter this contest.2. Neat, but not decorative, scrapbook should be used for mounting the clippings.3. Typewritten articles are not to be considered as exhibits or newspaper publicity. The newspaperclippings and/or stories that appeared in mimeographed publications such as school papers, churchpapers, etc. are what is wanted. Typewritten copy should be used to show material sent, and usedon radio or television. Such copy should have a notation telling how and when the material wasused.4. Clippings and pictures that appear between State 4-H Short Courses comprise the material judges.5. The number of clippings does not form the basis for measuring the effectiveness of publicity. Thereporter with limited facilities should not be penalized. Regularity of coverage, such as a story everyweek, and the variety of events covered, should be a big factor in grading scrapbooks.6. Clippings must be stories written by the reporter, or from notes given to editor or a representative of apaper by the reporter.7. Clippings about 4-H members in parish appearing in farm publications or out-of-town papers do notconstitute an entry unless the reporter is responsible for getting the material to the publication.8. The reporter must put a notation on all stories, pictures or items shown in scrapbook telling what partthe reporter had in getting the item published. Some typical notations include: written and submitted,gave information to editor, arranged for picture to be taken, etc. (VERY IMPORTANT)


DAIRY JUDGING (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H club member.2. Elementary, Junior and Senior members will judge pictures of dairy cattle.FORESTRY (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H member.2. Will be required to identify, by common name, native trees from leaves from study guide.3. A written test will be given from forestry project booklets.CAREER PREP (Good Grooming & Personal Development) (Elementary, Junior and Senior)NOTE: Boy and girls will compete together.1. Any 4-H club member.2. Contestants will be judged on appearance, poise and personality.3. Contestants will be asked what they want to be when they grow up (what career), what educations isneeded for that job, why they would be good at that job and where would they be able to get a job likethat. (Forms do not need to turned in this year.)CONSUMER FOOD JUDGING (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H’er.2. Contestants will make wise consumer choices based on their knowledge of nutrition and food guidepyramid. See study guide.HORTICULTURE <strong>CONTEST</strong> (NJHA) (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Any 4-H club member.2. Contestants will be required to identify fruits, flowers, ornamental and weeds, along with judging one(1) class of vegetables.3. Specimens to be identified will be from the study guide.INSECTS (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H club member.2. Test information from study guide.INSECT COLLECTION (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H club member.2. Bring collection to Achievement Day.3. The contestant will be judged on:(a) Insect Collection(b) Mounting TechniquesMEAT IDENTIFICATION (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Any 4-H club member.2. Will identify cuts of meat according to kind of animal, wholesale cut, retail cut based on study guide.POULTRY (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to all 4-H'ers.2. Contestant will be required to judge dressed chickens, broke-out eggs,and exterior quality of egg shell and/or take a test.READY TO WEAR (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1, Open to any 4-H member.2. Contestants will make wise choices on clothing and accessories based on cost per wearing, qualityconstruction, fabric content, or cleaning and care of garment.WILDLIFE STUDY (Elementary, Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H members.2. Will be asked to select management practices and foods used by different wildlife species.3. There is a written exam with information coming from study guide.


JUNIOR AND SENIOR <strong>CONTEST</strong>S:CHILD DEVELOPMENT (Junior and Senior)1. Contestants must be 12 years or older, enrolled in Child Care.2. Test will be given to Juniors and Seniors. Questions taken from Child Care manual.COMPUTER SCIENCE (Junior and Senior) (Individual Only)1. Open to 4-H'ers enrolled in computer science on the You and Energy, Machines and theEnvironment 6th grade project book.2. 4-H'ers test score will be added to record book score to determine winner.3. Requires record book score.FOOD & NUTRITION (Junior and Senior)1. Open to any 4-H=er.2. Members are required to take a test on foods and nutrition. Test scores will determine winner.HOME ENVIRONMENT (Junior and Senior)1. Contestant must be enrolled in Home Environment project.2. Contestants take written test taken from project book.3. Requires Record Book Score!PHOTOGRAPHY <strong>CONTEST</strong> (Junior and Senior)1. Contestant must be enrolled in Photography project and records must be entered in this contest.2. Seventh graders will take written test from Unit I, 8th - 9th graders from Unit II, and 10th -12th fromthe Advanced Photography Book.3. Test scores will be added to Record Book score to determine the winner.PLANT SCIENCE (Junior and Senior)1. Open to Junior and Senior 4-H members only.2. Contestants will be required to identify weeds and seeds. Test will be given - questions taken fromstudy guide.SMALL ENGINES & COMPACT TRACTOR (Junior & Senior)1. Open to Junior and Seniors only.2. Contestants will take a written test.TRACTOR (Junior & Senior)1. Open to Junior and Seniors only.2.
