HOME & SCHOOL-PARTNERS FOR SUCCESS
We rely on parental support to send an important message to students about the importance of
education. It is through a unified effort and the mutual support of home and school that we
best help our young people find the success here at school that is so essential to a lifetime
pattern of success. We ask that our parents and guardians work together with school on the
following necessary prerequisites to a good education:
Help to ensure that your student attends school regularly and arrives on time.
Please follow school procedures in reporting legitimate absences and readmitting pupils after
an absence. Close monitoring of attendance supports the safety of our students.
Let the school know of any serious family problems or concerns. Through such communication,
we may be able to help by offering resources as well as ease the way for your child.
Attend open house, parent-teacher conferences, PTO meetings, special programs, concerts and
6
other school events throughout the year. It is clear that PARENT INVOLVEMENT IS A KEY
TO STUDENT SUCCESS.
Support our school=s discipline policies and bus safety rules. Children thrive upon consistency
and a Aunified front@ from home and school in order for discipline to be most effective. Even if
we adults must discuss the issues and come to consensus, it=s best to do this without involving
the child at that point in the process.
Don=t hesitate to let us know if you can chaperone or volunteer as a media center assistant,
tutor, resource person or PTO committee member.
Use the web site or e-mail to stay tuned to what=s happening at school.
An effective vehicle to monitor and assist your child with homework and assignments is the
AGENDA BOOK. Review it nightly or as necessary to encourage your student=s responsibility
and follow-through.
If a problem arises, try to resolve it by following a chain of responsibility. Remember that your
child=s perception is just one piece of the larger picture. It=s best to first address your concern
with the classroom teacher and/or the school counselor, where applicable. If the concern is
ongoing or unresolved, contact the school administration.
GENESIS PARENT PORTAL
Our goal is to provide ongoing communication with our parents. In light of this, we continue to
encourage Riverfront parents to sign up for online access to the Genesis Parent Portal. This
valuable tool provides parents with access to your child=s schedule, attendance, grades,
assignments and conduct records. In addition, parents are registered to receive e-mail
notifications from school. If you have not already registered for access to Genesis or if there are
changes to the information that is currently on file, please fill out the form at the back of this
handbook and return it to your child=s homeroom teacher as soon as possible.
ATTENDANCE
New Jersey State Statute maintains that every parent, guardian or other person having custody
and control of a child between six and sixteen years shall cause such child regularly to attend
the public schools of the district.
ABSENCES
If a student will be absent or late to school, we ask that the parent or guardian report the
absence or lateness by calling 499-4647 by 8:00 AM on the day of the absence and follow the
voice mail prompt for ATTENDANCE.
Following an absence, a parental note or medical excuse should be submitted either to the
student=s first period teacher or directly to the Main Office. AExcused@ absences include the
following:
7
Personal illness or doctors= appointmentsBverification from a physician required
Death in the family
Court appearance or subpoena
Religious holidays as recognized by the NJ State Board of Education
Upon returning to school from an absence, the student has twice as many days as those absent
to complete all make-up work.
Family vacations are recorded as Aunexcused@ absences from school(unless prior approval has
been granted from the building principal and the vacation does not exceed 5 days). Students
should secure their assignments before leaving and must submit all work upon their return.
Following four or more unexcused absences and periodically thereafter, parents will be
notified(Please see truancy update letter on page 40). More than nineteen unexcused absences
in any given school year may result in a student=s retention for that school year.
LATENESS TO SCHOOL
Lateness to school may result in academic difficulties in missed classes. Furthermore, chronic
unexcused lateness negatively impacts a child=s ability to be academically successful. With this
in mind, we strongly encourage students to arrive on time to school. Parents will be
periodically notified of their child=s lateness record. In addition, disciplinary consequences will
occur: after 3 tardies the student will accrue a one hour after school detention; after five tardies
the student will accrue two one hour detentions; and after 10 tardies the student will receive a
Saturday School detention. A parent conference with the intent to remedy the habitual pattern
of latenesses will be scheduled after 10 tardies.
In the event that a student is late to school, he/she must report to the Main Office to obtain a late
pass and be registered in attendance PRIOR to reporting to their respective classroom. If a
student arrives after 8:30 he/she must be accompanied by an adult.
ATTENDANCE AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
If a student is absent an entire school day, he/she may not participate in practice, game
or other extra-curricular activities that day, unless an exception has been granted by
administration.
If a student is absent on the day prior to a contest or an activity, he/she may participate
if the excuse is legitimate.
Students must be in school for a minimum of half a day (four hours or more) to be
eligible to participate in a co-curricular activity (athletic practices and contests,
performing groups such as choral, music and drama activities or other school approved
curricular activities) for that day and/or evening.
ARRIVAL
MORNING ROUTINE
8
The school day begins at 7:55 AM. At that time all students should be in their
homerooms ready to begin.
Students who arrive in the building prior to 7:45AM must report directly to the area
within the school that is designated for their grade level and remain there until their
teachers arrive to accompany them or until they are dismissed to go to their lockers to
begin their day. 4 th , 5 th and 6 th grade students enter via Pine Street and go to the All-
Purpose Room. 7 th & 8 th graders enter via the Front/Cedar Street main entrance and go
directly to the main gymnasium.
EMP & EDP
The Florence Township Board of Education sponsors an Early Morning Program (EMP) and an
Extended Day Program (EDP). EMP starts on the first day of school in the cafeteria and runs
each school day from 7:00 AM until the school day begins. The cost is $20.00 per child per
month. EDP starts on the first Monday of the school year, September 10, 2007, and begins each
school day from dismissal until 6:00 PM. Monthly tuition is based on a cost of $9.00 per day per
child. CHILDREN MUST BE ENROLLED IN THESE PROGRAMS TO ATTEND.
Applications are available online via school and district websites or from the school office. For
more information, please contact Sher Chadwick, program director, at 499-4669.
BREAKFAST
Breakfast food is available in the cafeteria every morning for $1.00. Students must arrive early
enough, however, to have enough time to purchase and finish eating breakfast, since they may
not leave the cafeteria with their food, nor are they permitted to be late to their first period class.
SCHOOL DAY PROCEDURES
LOCKERS/LOCKER USE
Each student is assigned one locker, which is registered in the student=s name. Locks must be
purchased through the Riverfront School at a cost of $6.00 per lock. Locks other than those
provided for purchase by the school will not be allowed, since for the safety of students and the
security of the building, all locks must be accessible by master keys provided to the
administrative as well as security offices.
First period classroom teachers will also maintain a confidential master list of their students=
locker numbers and combinations as an additional safety and security measure.
Lockers are school property and, as such, may be inspected/searched by appropriate school
personnel when deemed necessary. If the school personnel determine that a locker will be
searched, the contents will be assumed to belong to whoever is using the locker. Students
should not share a locker, nor should students ever share their locker combination numbers
with others.
Maintaining a locker is an important lesson in responsibility for a student. Students are
responsible for the care and condition of their lockers at all times. This means that lockers
should be closed gently and not by kicking or slamming. Students should not deface or damage
9
lockers. Most importantly, lockers that are organized and neat provide a great service to
students in terms of maintaining books and belongings, as well as storing coats, which must
also be kept in the locker during the school day.
The school will not be responsible for the security of student personal property and cannot be
held liable for reimbursement. As a result, we cannot stress enough, the importance of the
following locker guidelines for students:
Keep your locker locked when not in use;
Do not give out your combination;
Do not share you locker, nor use one that is not assigned to you;
Do not bring in or store in your locker valuable items that are not needed, such as CD
players, phones, iPOD=s, CD=s, jewelry, etc. We will do all that we can if a valuable is
missing; however, if such expensive items are not brought to school, they won=t risk
being misplaced or stolen.
CAFETERIA & LUNCH PROCEDURES
Students may purchase a complete meal at $2.15 or items to supplement lunches brought from
home.
Food or drink is permitted only in our cafeteria and should not to be eaten in the hallways or
classrooms. No one is permitted to leave the cafeteria with food or drink still being consumed.
Teachers, lunchroom aides, and cafeteria staff have the authority to assign students specific
seats in the cafeteria, and it is expected that students regard and respect their directives
regarding cafeteria procedures.
Upon arrival in the cafeteria, students should go directly to their assigned seats & tables
and remain seated until directed to move to the lunch line to purchase food and drinks.
Cutting in line is unfair and inconsiderate of others; this will be corrected immediately
upon discovery. Students are asked to wait their turn to be served and are expected and
encouraged to practice good manners.
Students are expected to behave in a calm and polite manner and remain seated in an
orderly fashion through the entire lunch period. Loud conversations or inappropriate
activities may be cause for disciplinary measures. As always, students may not make
physical contact with another student while in the cafeteria.
All trash must be properly disposed of, and students are responsible for trash that is in
their area. Simply stated, we ask that our students leave their lunch tables in the same
condition as they would want to find them. Students are encouraged to seek assistance
from a staff member when necessary.
Students should wait to be dismissed from the cafeteria and will be expected to do so in
an orderly fashion, as directed by staff members on duty. Students are expected to leave
10
the lunch tables and the area around their seats clean of debris or spills before leaving the
cafeteria.
In cases of infractions such as fighting, throwing food or objects, or misbehaviors as identified
in our code of conduct, students will be escorted by a cafeteria supervisor to an administrator.
VISITORS
Parents are always welcome to visit the Riverfront School. All visitors must enter through the
main entrance and report directly to the Main Office to sign in and obtain a visitor=s pass.
Since the safety of our students and school community is most important, the school district
will not hesitate to involve law enforcement and/or take legal action against any unauthorized
or suspicious person(s) in the building or on school property.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION PARTICIPATION
All students are required by state law to be actively enrolled in physical education classes.
Parental written requests for excuses from a single physical education class must be presented
to the nurse before the school day for which the request is made.
To be excused from physical education for any length of time beyond one day, a doctor=s
certificate is required, which should include a diagnosis and a specific time for the excuse, and
be presented to the school nurse. Such certification must be presented each year in which the
student is enrolled.
As per Board of Education Policy, Ano pupil, whose body contains body piercings, shall be
permitted to participate in gym class until such time said pupil has removed all such piercings.
Said piercings must remain removed for the duration of said pupil=s participation in gym class.@
FIRE DRILLS
Fire drills at regular intervals are required by law and are an important safety precaution. It is
essential that when the first signal is given, everyone obey orders promptly and quietly, and
clear the building by the prescribed route as quickly as possible. The teacher in each classroom
will give the student instructions.
HALL PASSES
Students must ask the teacher for and carry with them a AHall Pass@ whenever they wish to
leave the classroom to go to the lavatory, Media Center, Nurse, Office, Counselor, or any other
area in the school building.
TEXTBOOKS & AGENDA BOOK
Textbooks are expected to be cared for responsibly. Students are expected to have all books
covered for the entire school year. Any lost, stolen or damaged book will be charged to the
student to whom it was issued.
11
The school also provides each student with an Agenda Book. This daily planner, used to help
organize students, is required to be used by all students. Because the Agenda Book plays such
an important role in our students= success at school, we ask that parents check it each night and
monitor its use, to reinforce and support that homework, tests, long term assignments and short
term projects are recorded. The first planner is provided free of charge; thereafter, a
replacement cost of $5.00 will be charged.
STUDENT CONDUCT
CODE OF CONDUCT
The Riverfront School community expects all students to
Prepare themselves mentally and physically for the process of learning.
Demonstrate respect for all people and property.
Take responsibility for their own behavior and learning.
Meet the requirements of each class and follow classroom and school directions &
procedures.
Communicate effectively and appropriately with adults and students
To that end students should:
1. Act respectfully and courteously toward peers and adults.
2. Report promptly to class, prepared with pencils, notebooks and required
materials for learning.
3. Follow individual classroom rules and procedures.
4. Move about the corridors in a relatively quiet and orderly fashion.
5. Refrain from the use, distribution or possession of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and
other controlled substances.
6. Respect and care for school property.
7. Refrain from the use of profanity or other unacceptable forms of communication.
8. Use reasonable means to resolve disputes; Students should NEVER fight to
express personal anger.
9. Respect the rights and property of other people in the school.
10. Remain on school grounds and in designated areas.
11. Refrain from inappropriate displays of affection.
12. Refrain from chewing gum in the school building.
12
13. Eat only in designated areas.
14. Dress in an appropriate manner and wear protective shoes with closed toes and
heels. (i.e., no sandals or clogs, especially on a day the child has gym)
15. Leave at home items which interfere with learning such as skateboards, CD
players, radios, walkman and electronic games.
Students who consistently meet these expectations will experience the self-satisfaction
that comes with discipline and hard work, as well as continued academic and personal
successes. They will also earn the respect of peers and adults, and will build upon a
pattern of success. For students in such a pattern, discipline is internal and selfdirected.
Students who make decisions contrary to the expectations above will experience
negative consequences that come as a result of poor decision-making. Such
consequences will be enforced with the goal of re-directing a student toward more
productive and positive behaviors.
Our goal is to support an environment where all students have the opportunity to be
successful and one that ensures the safety and wellness of students, staff members, and
their property.
Discipline Procedures
Discipline procedures will begin in the classroom under the direct supervision of, and
with consequences given by, the classroom teacher. The teacher will also respond in
collaboration with the grade level team of teachers, the school counselor, case manager,
and parent or guardian, as necessary.
If a problem or concern persists, the matter will then be referred to an administrator,
who, in consultation with the adults and/or students who may have forwarded the
concern, will determine subsequent action in accordance with school policies and
administrative guidelines included in this handbook.
Any student who is suspected of breaking the code of conduct will have a conference
(due process hearing) prior to the decision regarding the disciplinary consequence. (The
only exception is for emergency situations when the school administrator determines that
the student=s continued presence is an immediate danger to persons or property or may
physically disrupt the school=s orderly operation. Whenever an emergency suspension
occurs, the parent/guardian or emergency contact person will be notified immediately.)
The principal and/or his/her designee will discuss the infraction with the student. This
discussion will include an explanation of the evidence resulting in the charge(s), as well
as a reasonable opportunity for the student to state his/her side of the story.
Because students benefit most from a Aunified front@ between home and school when it
comes to behavioral expectations and consequences, the school will notify and discuss
with the parent or guardian the infraction and the consequence. Infractions can result in
the following consequences:
13
DETENTION- Detention will be held immediately after school. The days and location
of the specific rooms may be adjusted and students will be notified when and where
they are assigned. Detentions extend anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half,
depending upon the AINFRACTION@ as indicated in that section of the handbook.
SATURDAY SCHOOL- Saturday School is held from 8:00AM until 11:00AM two or
three Saturdays each month. Students are required to bring study materials, since they
will not be permitted to sleep, eat or socialize.
Saturday School for the 2010-2011 school year will be assigned on the following days:
September 25 th , October 16 th , November 13 th , December 4 th , 11 th , & 18 th ,
January 8 th & 22 nd , February 5 th & 19 th , March 5 th & 26 th , April 16 th , May 7 th & 21 st ,
June 4 th & 11 th .
SUSPENSION- If the behavior consequence results in suspension from school, it
becomes effective after the informal suspension hearing, after notification of the
parent/guardian/emergency contact person, or at the end of the school day. The
parent/guardian may be expected to contact the school administrator so as to arrange a
mutually agreeable time for a conference prior to the reinstatement date. Notice will
also be mailed to the parent/guardian and sent home with the student.
If suspended, a student cannot participate in any school-related activities during or
after school or on the weekend falling within the duration of a suspension, and the
student will not be permitted to enter Florence Township Public School property
without prior authorization of the principal or his/her designee.
An appeal procedure may be used by the student or parent by contacting the building
principal or assistant principal.
Some inappropriate behavior will result in immediate administrative disciplinary action:
1. Smoking or possession of tobacco products in school or on school property.
2. Open defiance of the authority of any school employee;
3. Verbal assault including racial/ethnic derogatory remarks;
4. Physical assault (harassment/fighting/horseplay).
STUDENTS WHO ARE THE VICTIM OF BULLYING, TEASING AND/OR
NAME CALLING ARE TO SEEK IMMEDIATE HELP FROM THEIR
TEACHER, AIDES, OR PRINCIPAL. FAILURE TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE
CAN OFTEN RESULT IN FIGHTING.
14
5. Possession and/or use of alcohol or controlled substance;
6. Truancy;
7. Bus misconduct;
8. Vandalism/Stealing.
THE RIVERFRONT SCHOOL ADISCIPLINE INFRACTION/CONSEQUENCE
CODE@ IS INCLUDED AT THE END OF THIS HANDBOOK. Discipline infractions
that may not have been addressed in the ADiscipline Code@ will be subject to review at
the discretion of the school administration. The ADiscipline Code@ document may be
reviewed during the school year. If changes to the code are implemented, students, staff
and parents affected by the change will be notified.
DRESS CODE FOR STUDENTS
Students at Riverfront School are required to follow an acceptable standard of dress
based on specific guidelines as indicated below. In order to foster an academic
atmosphere that is free from distraction, promotes safety, and is not offensive to
others, clothing, accessories, and/or styles that may be considered as a distraction, as
offensive, or as unsafe are not permitted. (Individual teachers may additionally
determine specific safety requirements specific to their instructional programs- for
example, requiring safety goggles in a science lab or sneakers for physical education.)
Examples of dress that are NOT PERMITTED include but are not limited to:
* Excessively oversized clothing and/or sagging pants;
* Sleeveless tops or shirts;
* Tight-fitting clothing
* Sunglasses
* Outside wear (such as hats, coats, or gloves) is not to be worn in classrooms. Coats
should be stored in the student=s locker.
* Flip-flops or shoes that leave feet unprotected or that can potentially hinder
movement; examples include flip-flops, mesh slippers, excessively high heels, or
platform shoes. (Footwear must be worn at all times.)
* Clothing that is Arevealing@; examples that are not permitted are as follows:
15
all sleeveless tops (including halter tops or tank tops or basketball jerseys); all
tops must have sleeves and must be worn with a tee shirt under them);
clothes that expose bare midriffs;
clothes that expose the torso under the arms;
clothes that expose the shoulders;
clothes that expose undergarments;
see-through clothing;
* Studded accessories, such as belts or wristbands;
* Extreme accessories, including jewelry that can jeopardize one’s safety. Examples include
over
sized(hooped) earrings, face or tongue piercing, & excessive wrist bands.
* Clothing that appears to be gang-affiliated in style, color, or wording;
* Writing or drawing on shirts, clothing, book bags or book covers that makes reference
to anything obscene, offensive, illegal, or disparaging;
* Excessively short skirts, shorts, or cut-offs;
* Clothing resembling pajamas or undergarments;
* Hats, caps, headbands and bandanas;
* Excessive make-up/eye liner or face paint of any type;
* Long or excessive chains or straps of any kind
DRESS CODE ENFORCEMENT
Staff members remain vigilant as to the appropriateness of our students= dress.
Therefore, when any staff member at school intervenes to correct the inappropriateness
of students= dress, students are expected to immediately cooperate and comply with the
directive.
Students whose clothing does not adhere to guidelines will be asked to remedy their
inappropriate clothing. If students cannot remedy the problem with other clothes
available to them here at school, they will be directed to contact their homes to arrange
for a change of clothing. They will also be advised not to wear the clothing or similar
attire in the future.
16
The first priority in situations involving inappropriate dress is intended to be less
punitive. Our objective is to correct the dress so that it is acceptable for school.
However, a continued pattern of inappropriate dress by an individual student will
reflect defiant or insubordinate behavior resulting in further disciplinary consequences.
Our goal is not to spend unproductive time in Ameasuring@ inches above knees, width
of straps, or the distance of shorts or skirts from tips of fingers. One recommendation
would be that if a parent, guardian or student thinks that an article of clothing may be
inappropriate for school, then chances are pretty certain that the clothing should not be
worn to school. In this regard, we count on our parents= support and understanding.
Given the ever-changing style of clothing, in addition to our students= varied stages of
physical development, no dress code can possibly address or predict every clothing
style change or trend. This is why it is necessary for the staff and administration to
reserve the right to determine if a student=s dress is extreme and thus not appropriate
for school. (Students attending any of our school functions will not be permitted to
participate unless they are properly dressed.)
OTHER IMPORTANT EXPECTATIONS FOR RIVERFRONT STUDENTS
No gum chewing is allowed.
Cell phone use is not permitted during school hours anywhere in the school building.
Cell phones must be turned off while the student is in school. We understand the
genuine concern that parents and guardians have about being able to communicate
with their school children, should such a need arise. Parents may always contact the
Riverfront School Office to relay an emergency message to their children. In addition,
we emphasize to our students the importance of clearly communicating their afterschool
whereabouts to parents. Furthermore, our students are always allowed to use the
office phone after dismissal or with a pass from a teacher to contact their parents when
necessary.
If a student does carry a cell phone to school, it must be turned off and safely locked in
the student=s locker at all times during school hours. If a student has a cell phone in
his/her possession for use or a cell phone in use (including a cell phone heard ringing)
during the school day, the cell phone will be confiscated by an adult at school and
brought to the Main Office until a parent/guardian claims it. A disciplinary
consequence will also be assigned. (Please refer to the CODE OF CONDUCT section
under AELECTRONIC DEVICES.@) Since the school does not assume responsibility for
lost items, families are cautioned that cell phones could potentially become an
expensive loss.
17
Electronic devices (such as iPODS, CD players or hand-held games) are not permitted
at any time during school hours anywhere in the school building. If a student has such
an electronic device in his/her possession or in use during the school day, it will be
brought to the Main Office until a parent/guardian claims it and a disciplinary
consequence will be assigned. (Please refer to the CODE OF CONDUCT section under
AELECTRONIC DEVICES.@) Students and families are once again cautioned of the cost
and potential liability on the owner, should these devices be lost.
HARASSMENT/BULLYING
It is the policy of the Florence Township Public School System to maintain a learning
and working environment that is free from harassment of any kind. It shall be a
violation for students to harass staff members or other students through conduct or
communications. Any student who alleges harassment by any other student or
employee should report the incident to the nearest trusted adult, such as an aid, teacher
or school administrator.
HARASSMENT is unwanted, inappropriate and offensive physical or verbal behavior
toward another. Behaviors that may be considered as harassment include, but are not
limited to, the following examples:
Unwanted touching of any kind; examples include patting, pinching, stroking, squeezing,
tickling or brushing up against someone
Repeated unwanted communication in the form of Alove@ letters, rumors that attempt to
ruin the reputation of another, or threats in the form of internet communications, phone
calls or verbal/physical advances
Lewd, obscene or suggestive pictures or language
Jokes or cartoons that are considered offensive
Name-calling or offensive comments either directly or indirectly
Offensive or obscene gestures
Spreading rumors or confidential information as a means to damage one=s reputation or
good name
Pejorative comments (i.e., Aput-downs@) either directly or indirectly, through classmates,
by phone, or on-line
Unprovoked threats to hurt or fight someone, or statements related to isolating or
ignoring someone or causing them distress
Disciplinary action will be taken against any student or adult who commits an act of
harassment.
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
The Florence Township Board of Education affirms its responsibility to ensure all students in
the public schools of Florence Township equal educational opportunity and all employees equal
employment opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, ancestry, national origin,
18
and social or economic status.
The Florence Township Board of Education Affirmative Action Plans are available in the Board
of Education Office, 201 Cedar Street, Florence, New Jersey, 08518. Any student or parent who
alleges that there has been an incident of discrimination should report the allegation in writing
to the affirmative action officer at the following address:
Florence Township Riverfront School
250 Pine Street
Florence, New Jersey 08518
In addition, parents or students are encouraged to seek the help of school or district
administration, the Affirmative Action Officer, counselor, teachers, nurse, parents, police
department, 499-3131, or the Division of Civil Rights in Trenton, NJ.
POLICY STATEMENT CONCERNING DRUGS, ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND
CONTROLLED DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES
The Board of Education, acting upon the community=s expectation that
public schools will provide the most conducive learning environment, recognizes that unless
schools and their students are free of alcohol and other drugs, optimum conditions for learning
do not exist.
The Board of Education recognizes that the misuse of substances by any student seriously
impedes that student=s education and threatens the welfare of the entire school community.
The Board is committed to the prevention, intervention and rehabilitation of students involved
with substance abuse but will take necessary and appropriate steps to protect the school
community from harm and exposure.
Students are prohibited from possessing, consuming or distributing drugs or alcohol in any
form while at school, in co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, on school grounds,
attending a school related function on or off campus, and when coming to and going from
school. Students are further prohibited from smoking cigarettes or using tobacco products in
the school building or on school property.
In accordance with N.J.S,A, 18A:40-A Article 2 and N.J.A.C. 6:29-6.1-6.5, students suspected of
being Aunder the influence@ shall be subject to medical examination at the parent/guardian=s
expense, suspension, and other disciplinary measures graded on the severity of the offense.
Students and parents are advised that New Jersey laws may require additional penalties
beyond school sanctions for drug related offenses on and off school grounds in accordance with
Drug Free School Zones.
Referrals to treatment or for evaluation will be made by the certified Substance Awareness
Coordinator as required by N.J.A,C, 6:29. For additional information regarding prevention,
intervention and rehabilitation of substance abuse, please contact Mrs. Marie Czepiel, our
district=s Student Assistance Counselor.
19
The Board of Education intends to use the disciplinary sanctions of this policy as a means of
helping students recover from the debilitating effects of substance abuse. It is in this spirit that
the development of this policy was intended. Students are encouraged to seek help for
problems with or related to alcohol and other drug use. The district=s Student Assistance
Counselor provides confidential direct and referral services for students seeking help with an
alcohol, drug or other problem related to either their substance use or use by someone in a close
relationship with them.
SERVICES TO STUDENTS
COUNSELING SERVICES
Our school counselor provides services that facilitate the development of all of the students at
the Florence Township Riverfront School. The main goal of Counseling Services is to address
the developmental needs of our students educationally, personally and socially so that they
become intelligent decision makers and lifelong learners.
Services offered through the School Counseling Services Office include but are not limited to the
following: classroom visits, school-wide character education initiatives, group counseling,
career decision-making, high school course selection, study skills support, peer mediation to
solve conflicts, parent/teacher/administrator consultation and support involving our students
and families, and support for individual students in decision-making.
It is the mission of our Counseling Services to facilitate growth and learning among the
students in the school. That which is best for the student will guide all decisions and actions
because the student is the most important client. Parents are not only welcome, but encouraged
to contact their child=s school counselor if they have any concerns about their child.
NURSE/HEALTH SERVICES
Our school nurse is on duty throughout the school day. If the nurse is not available, the
student should report directly to the Main Office.
The nurse is available for first aid of minor injuries or illnesses and for discussion of any health
concerns. If a student becomes ill in class, the classroom teacher will issue a pass to the nurse
and, if appropriate, someone will accompany the student to the nurse=s office. Upon entrance to
the Health Office, students will sign in on the nurse=s log. A pass will be issued by the nurse
when the student returns to class.
Students are not permitted to contact a parent for release from school due to an illness.
Students must first report to the nurse for any illness-related issue. The nurse will then
make all necessary parent contacts regarding an early release.
Administering Medication
The following guidelines regarding the administration of medication are not only in the best
interest of our students= safety, but they are also in compliance with State of NJ laws regarding
20
administration of medication at school:
No medication will be administered without the Florence Township Schools ARequest for
Administration@ form being filled out and signed by the doctor and the parental
authorization filled out by the parent or guardian (signed and dated).
All medications must be in pharmacy- labeled containers. The medication should be
brought to the school in the original container, appropriately labeled by the pharmacy or
physician.
EMERGENCY/HEALTH CARD INFORMATION: Accurate emergency information
regarding each student must be provided to assure proper care and safety. This
information is requested on a card which is filed in our school=s Health Office. Parents
should complete and sign both sides of the emergency card. Please contact the School
Nurse=s office if, at any time during the school year, the Emergency/Health Card
information needs to be updated or changed.
Parents of students with anaphylaxis are responsible for attending any school sponsored
activity or trip. If they cannot attend, they must provide a delegate for epinephrine
administration. If a delegate is unavailable, the parent must notify the school nurse at
least two weeks prior to the event.
END-OF-DAY ROUTINE
DISMISSAL
Prior to leaving school, students should follow a routine of checking their Agenda Books to
ensure that they have books and materials they need from their lockers.
EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Early dismissals are sometimes necessary for a doctor, dental or daytime appointment. The
process used by our office is as follows:
On the morning of the early dismissal, the student should report to the Main Office
before school and turn in his/her parent or guardian=s written notification to the office
staff.
The student will receive an AEarly Release Form@ that should then be presented to the
teacher at the time that the student has to leave that day. (If the student=s early dismissal
time will occur in the middle of a class period, the student should notify the classroom
teacher prior to the beginning of that class period.)
In the interest of our students= safety and school security, in the event of an early
dismissal, parents/guardians must come into the Main Office in person to Asign out@ and
accompany their children. Upon returning, we ask that the parent also returns to the
office to sign the student back in.
PLEASE NOTE: A student will not be released to an adult unless that adult is
designated as an additional contact on the Student Information Card.
The early dismissal will not be documented as Aexcused@ until an accompanying note from the
doctor, dentist or legal agency is brought to the office, by either student or parent, following the
appointment.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
All school policies and code of conduct expectations apply to students who are being
transported on a Florence Township School Bus. Bus drivers, while performing their duties,
have the same authority as a member of the teaching staff. Students must ride only on their
designated buses.
In addition to adhering to our school=s code of conduct, students are expected to follow these
guidelines:
1. Students boarding the bus are to move directly to a seat (which may be assigned)
and remain there until reaching their destination and the bus stops moving.
Students are not permitted to stand or move to another seat unless directed by
the bus driver.
2. Seatbelts must be used.
3. Students are expected to follow the following safety procedures:
Be on time at the designated stop.
Never stand in the street or on private property while waiting for the bus.
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before walking toward it.
When you must cross a roadway at your stop, go to a point at least 10 feet in
front of the bus and wait for the signal to cross from the driver.
Sit in your seat with both feet on the floor, facing forward with arms, legs and
other parts of your body inside the bus at all times.
Students may not eat food or chew gum on the bus.
4. Emergency exits should not be obstructed and should only be used in
emergencies. In case of an emergency, students remain seated until directions
are given by the driver.
BICYCLES
Riding bicycles to school remains a privilege only to those who maintain safety
procedures, which includes, first and foremost, wearing a safety helmet. In addition,
students should not ride bikes near the school building or near and around parking
areas during busy arrival and dismissal times. Students must walk their bikes safely
away from the school campus and wait until it is safe to begin riding. If a student is
cited for unsafe use of a bicycle, his/her privilege may be revoked. In addition, students
are responsible for locking their bikes, since the school will not assume liability for
damaged or stolen bikes or liability for personal injury associated with students who
ride bikes to school.
22
LOITERING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY
Students must not loiter on school property or on the property of other Florence
Township Schools while those schools are in session without receiving prior permission
from the school=s office. If students are loitering on school property, they will be
considered trespassing and the police will be notified. Students suspended from school
are never permitted to be on school property or at school functions on the day(s) of
suspension. In addition, any student who violates the code of conduct expectations
toward students or staff members from other schools will be subject to the
consequences outlined in the code.
Picnic, they must maintain the following requirements, as of Semester Two:
Passing all classes for the year at the time of the activity. (We encourage your continuing to monitor your
Receive no more than two office detentions. This includes any detentions from violations of our school
excessive tardiness and/or absentee policy.
Have been assigned to no more than one Saturday school.
Have not been assigned any suspensions.
For the Eighth Grade Moving-up ceremony, the following criteria apply:
Passing all classes for the year.
Have been assigned no more than two Saturday schools.
Have been assigned no more than one suspension.
The eighth graders have already been informed of the eligibility parameters for these events, with all of these
expectations beginning on a “clean slate” beginning with Semester Two.
With respect to preserving tradition and the ceremonial nature of the year-end activities, positioning these events as
earned incentives will promote a sense of unity and pride within the graduating class. The 8 th grade team of teachers
will continue to play an active and supportive role in this endeavor. In essence, we want your child working
productively to gain, grow, and develop both academically and socially in preparation for their future. With your
continued support, our collaborative efforts will serve to benefit your child and the entire learning community at the
RE: Truancy Update
Dear Parent/Guardian:
www.florence.k12.nj.us
In our attempts to remain compliant with New Jersey law, statute NJSA 18A:38-25, this letter is to remind you that
“every parent, guardian or other persons having custody and control of a child between the ages of six and sixteen
shall cause such child to regularly attend the public school of the district in which instruction is given.”
Your child’s current attendance record reflects a continued pattern of absence that is summarized below.
Total Number of Days Absent: YTD
Total Number of Days of Unexcused Absences: YTD
Following four or more UNEXUSED absences, as per our school policy, parents/guardians will be notified. Further
consequences may include your child being excluded from class trips or school functions. In severe cases of truancy,
Riverfront will report to both local and state agencies, which may lead to potential legal consequences including, but
not limited to, fines and court appearances. More than nineteen UNEXCUSED absences in any given school year may
result in a student’s retention for that academic year.
Needless to say, a disproportionate number and pattern of unexcused absences results in a significant disruption in
your child’s learning, and affects academic achievement and success. We recognize that it takes family and school
working together to make success possible and permanent. If there is an extenuating circumstance that warrants
immediate attention, please do not hesitate to contact our Riverfront administrative office for an appointment.
In addition, should you have any specific questions or concerns, please contact our Director of Security and
Attendance, Mr. Jeff Dankanich at 499-4620, Ext 4109.
Sincerely,
Theresa Elias
RE: Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Compliance Notification
Dear Parents/Guardians and Employees:
In accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we are required to notify parents, teachers,
and other employees each year of the availability of the Asbestos Management Plan and the response action
we are taking to maintain the asbestos containing materials in our schools.
The original AHERA inspection of our buildings took place in the 1988-89 school year. At that time the
condition of the asbestos was assessed. Since then appropriate response actions have been taken to ensure
that the asbestos is kept in good condition.
A Periodic Surveillance of each building has occurred since the original inspection. A copy of these reports
are on file in the main office of each school.
Custodians and maintenance workers are continually instructed on the health effects of asbestos and the
importance of maintaining this material in good condition during their normal day to day activities.
Due to construction and renovation projects, several response actions were conducted during the 2006/2007
school year at the Roebling Elementary School and Florence Township Riverfront School. This removal was
in compliance with AHERA/EPA/NESHAPS and OSHA regulations.
If you wish to review your school’s Asbestos Management Plan, a copy is located in the school office.
