Special congratulations to Jack Freer (1st), Max Freer (5th),Nelson Bours (7th) and Thomas Fenton-Lee (9th) who all made <strong>the</strong> top ten in <strong>the</strong>ir age groups.Year 6 Musical – <strong>The</strong> Lion KingOn Wednesday <strong>the</strong> Year 6 Musical, <strong>The</strong> Lion King, was performed in <strong>the</strong> College Auditorium. For more about <strong>the</strong> eveningrefer to <strong>the</strong> article in <strong>the</strong> newsletter.Old Boys of <strong>the</strong> Preparatory SchoolAs displayed in <strong>the</strong> newly named, Deane Hall, we continue to look at <strong>the</strong> lives and impact of some significant Old Boys of<strong>the</strong> Preparatory School. This week we continue as we look at Ian Kiernan.Ian Kiernan AOIan Kiernan grew up in Watson’s Bay and spent five years at <strong>the</strong> Preparatory School. His love of sailing led him to competein some of <strong>the</strong> most famous races in <strong>the</strong> world including <strong>the</strong> Admiral’s Cup, Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cross Cup and <strong>the</strong> Trans PacificYacht Race. In 1986-1987 he represented Australia in <strong>the</strong> BOC Challenge Solo Around <strong>The</strong> World Yacht Race, finishing sixthand setting an Australian record for solo circumnavigation. While competing in this race, Ian was confronted by <strong>the</strong> levelof pollution in <strong>the</strong> world’s oceans. In response, in 1989, he led <strong>the</strong> first ‘Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day’ – an event thatproved to be so successful that ‘Clean Up Australia’ followed, and <strong>the</strong> program <strong>the</strong>n spread around <strong>the</strong> world.In recognition of his leadership in environmental matters, Ian has received many honours including an Order of AustraliaMedal (OAM), and both an Officer of <strong>the</strong> Order of Australia and a Centenary Medal. International recognition has included<strong>the</strong> award of <strong>the</strong> prestigious United Nations Environment Programme, Sasakawa Environment Prize. Ian was namedAustralian of <strong>the</strong> Year in 1994.As an avid sailor and ambassador for <strong>the</strong> Great Barrier Reef, Ian maintains his love for <strong>the</strong> sea. He is also patron of anumber of sailing groups including ASPECT Sailors with Disabilities and <strong>The</strong> Scots College Sailing Program, and is Patronof <strong>the</strong> Australian Association of Greater Public Schools.Charity ConcertLast night our Prep Choir, Concert Band and Orchestra performed in <strong>the</strong> annual College Charity Concert. This was animpressive evening as Preparatory boys, young and old, performed in different ensembles. This was also a fitting tributeas we farewelled Mr Bill Clark, Director of Music, who retires from <strong>the</strong> College at <strong>the</strong> end of this term. Mr Clark is a highlyrespected Director of Music whose enthusiasm and vision has made <strong>The</strong> Scots College Music Program <strong>the</strong> success it istoday. We thank Mr Clark for his visionary leadership and wish him all <strong>the</strong> very best in his retirement.Well done boys, and thank you to Miss Lowe, Mr Small, Mrs Helmers and Mr Molloy for <strong>the</strong>ir support of <strong>the</strong> boys’performance.Semester 1 Reports<strong>The</strong>re are four formal opportunities for reporting boy’s progress in <strong>the</strong> Preparatory School. <strong>The</strong>se include:<strong>Term</strong> 1: Parent/teacher interviews


Year 6 Musical – <strong>The</strong> Lion KingOn Wednesday <strong>the</strong> Year 6 Musical, <strong>The</strong> Lion King, was performed in <strong>the</strong> College Auditorium. Involving all five Year 6classes, this was a superb performance depicting high action, drama, well-known melodies and a good dose of humour.Congratulations to our Year 6 boys on a wonderful performance and thank you to all parents and friends for <strong>the</strong>ir heartysupport and encouragement of <strong>the</strong> boys on <strong>the</strong> night. <strong>The</strong> Lion King performance is <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong> dedication and hardwork of our boys and especially Miss Lowe, Music Coordinator, and Mrs Trudi O’Connell, Dance and Drama teacher. Wethank Miss Lowe and Ms O’Connell for <strong>the</strong>ir superb work with <strong>the</strong> boys and acknowledge <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> Year 6 ando<strong>the</strong>r support staff. A vote of thanks, also, to all parents who have assisted in helping with make-up or supporting <strong>the</strong> PAAin <strong>the</strong>ir assistance with <strong>the</strong> Musical. Please save this date in your diaries.<strong>The</strong> Fundraising Dinner is shaping up to be a very exciting and memorable social event. We have signed a top-billing popstar to perform exclusively for us, but all will be revealed in <strong>the</strong> next issue of <strong>The</strong> Lion & Lang Syne. <strong>The</strong>re will be limitednumbers, so when <strong>the</strong> opportunity arises to book, please do so quickly.As <strong>the</strong> Indigenous Education Program at Scots has grown, so too has its support. We now have a team of ambassadors tohelp spread <strong>the</strong> word of <strong>the</strong> Program.
