The “GAVIOTA espresso lounge cafe” is a<br />

pilot café recently opened in the Brumlovka<br />

building. The café offers a pleasant environment<br />

<strong>and</strong> excellent coffee. Part of the café<br />

is dedicated to a coffee maker show room/<br />

shop, presenting coffee makers <strong>and</strong> other<br />

equipment from the company TRADING s.r.o.<br />

You can always get freshly roasted<br />

coffee GAVIOTA espresso here, which is<br />

There are several parking areas on the <strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong> premises<br />

where you can securely park <strong>your</strong> car. There are two public<br />

parking areas w<strong>it</strong>h a capac<strong>it</strong>y of 88 cars (1 – behind the BETA<br />

<strong>and</strong> Brumlovka buildings) <strong>and</strong> 40 cars (2 – in front of the<br />

Brumlovka building). These are paid <strong>and</strong> attended. They are<br />

open from 7.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Another option is to park in the<br />

two underground parking areas w<strong>it</strong>h a capac<strong>it</strong>y of 70 cars<br />

(3 – Brumlovka building) <strong>and</strong> 200 cars (4 – FILADELFIE<br />

building). Both underground parking areas operate non-stop.<br />

Schoolchildren “Can Underst<strong>and</strong><br />

Money” thanks to a Unique Project<br />

The project “We Can Underst<strong>and</strong> Money”<br />

aims to increase the level of financial<br />

education, along w<strong>it</strong>h helping schoolchildren<br />

get real grasp of the costs of<br />

living. It will give them in<strong>for</strong>mation about<br />

the principles of housekeeping. To teach<br />

them careful budgeting, the project is<br />

designed to use real life s<strong>it</strong>uations (the<br />

costs of housing, transport, holidays <strong>and</strong><br />

so on). Also, the essentials of sensible<br />

decision making are an important part of<br />

financial education.<br />

“We wanted to compare the knowledge<br />

of budgeting money as demonstrated<br />

by basic school pupils who had<br />

tuner card (analogous as well as DVB-T<br />

transmission) <strong>and</strong> two highly powerful,<br />

The survey demonstrates that the pupils<br />

of a higher level of education in basic<br />

schools have a good grasp of investment<br />

<strong>and</strong> banking products. According to 92%<br />

of pupils, <strong>it</strong> is better to borrow money <strong>for</strong><br />

buying an apartment than a holiday trip.<br />

The vast major<strong>it</strong>y of children are aware<br />

of the fact that the first thing to do after<br />

losing a card is to block <strong>it</strong> at the bank, <strong>and</strong><br />

even then they can get another one. It is<br />

especially important to be aware of this<br />

fact because the survey shows that one<br />

in five pupils of higher education levels<br />

manages his/her own money <strong>and</strong> 79% of<br />

the children interviewed use a payment<br />

card. In add<strong>it</strong>ion to the pos<strong>it</strong>ive outcomes,<br />

the survey also indicates some drawbacks<br />

in financial education. By way of illustration,<br />

ATMs are often perceived by some<br />

pupils as an “automatic distributing point<br />

of cash”, regardless of whether or not they<br />

have any money in the bank.<br />

The project “We Can Underst<strong>and</strong> Money”<br />

is being carried out at the basic schools<br />

in the regions of Central Bohemia, Plzeň,<br />

Liberec, Pardubice <strong>and</strong> Vysočina. The pilot<br />

phase was launched in 2006, <strong>and</strong> over<br />

2,000 pupils, together w<strong>it</strong>h almost 1,000<br />

teachers, have participated since then. The<br />

core of the project, the book named “We<br />

Can Underst<strong>and</strong> Money”, is a unique tool<br />

<strong>and</strong> methodical material. This book was<br />

created thanks to the financial <strong>and</strong> professional<br />

support of GE Money Bank, which<br />

in<strong>it</strong>iated the project “We Can Underst<strong>and</strong><br />

Money” in 2006, <strong>and</strong> has been funding <strong>it</strong><br />

ever since, together w<strong>it</strong>h the European Social<br />

Fund <strong>and</strong> the National Budget of the CR.<br />

Bluetooth 2.0, the IEEE 1394 interface,<br />

Firewire <strong>and</strong> a 6-in-1 memory card<br />

reader. There are also 6 USB ports w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

2 of them on the side.<br />

What will certainly be appreciated<br />

is a wireless keyboard complete w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

packing case <strong>and</strong> numerical keys, a<br />

wireless optical mouse, an integrated<br />

VGA webcam w<strong>it</strong>h inbuilt microphone,<br />

the HP ambient light regime, measuring<br />

the intens<strong>it</strong>y of light, as well as the Win7<br />

Media Center remote control. As <strong>for</strong><br />

the operational system, <strong>it</strong> is Windows 7<br />

Home Premium 64-b<strong>it</strong> in the English version.<br />

Microsoft has released <strong>for</strong> downloading<br />

the connector of the Outlook application<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h Facebook <strong>and</strong> Windows Live Messenger.<br />

So far solely available <strong>for</strong> LinkedIn<br />

<strong>and</strong> MySpace networks, this accessory<br />

allows <strong>it</strong>s users to link their Outlook<br />

contacts w<strong>it</strong>h friends <strong>and</strong> acquaintances<br />

from social networks, along w<strong>it</strong>h giving<br />

them an opportun<strong>it</strong>y to find out what is<br />

new in their environment. The accessory<br />

is newly available to the users of older<br />

versions of Microsoft Outlook 2003 <strong>and</strong><br />

2007.<br />

“The Outlook accessory <strong>for</strong> Facebook<br />

<strong>and</strong> Windows Live Messenger builds on<br />

Division, Microsoft. “The connection of<br />

Facebook w<strong>it</strong>h the Microsoft Outlook application<br />

is a significant milestone in the<br />

world of social networks because their<br />

cooperation means the integration of the<br />

most widespread e-mail client w<strong>it</strong>h the<br />

most utilised social network,” he adds.<br />

Principally, the connector links people,<br />

who ex<strong>change</strong> messages w<strong>it</strong>h you<br />

through the Outlook application, <strong>and</strong> their<br />

profiles on social networks. Thanks to<br />

this, the users can check their e-mails,<br />

along w<strong>it</strong>h watching the activ<strong>it</strong>ies of their<br />

friends <strong>and</strong> acquaintances, including their<br />

photographs. Aside from extending their<br />

social network, they have – w<strong>it</strong>h a single<br />

click on their contact’s name – the opportun<strong>it</strong>y<br />

to display a brief list of the given<br />

person’s activ<strong>it</strong>ies on the social network,<br />

his/her recent e-mail conversations as<br />

well as mutual meetings <strong>and</strong> attachments<br />

received from the person.<br />

The connector is available to users of<br />

Microsoft Outlook 2003 <strong>and</strong> 2007, <strong>and</strong><br />

users of the latest version of Microsoft<br />

Outlook 2010 will be provided w<strong>it</strong>h the<br />

connector through a Microsoft Update.<br />

PUMA is following the current trend towards minimising the<br />

ecological burden <strong>and</strong>, accordingly, they have launched new<br />

packaging <strong>for</strong> their products that is environment-friendly <strong>and</strong><br />

whose design is a treat.<br />

Moreover, PUMA has introduced innovations in their packaging<br />

<strong>and</strong> distribution system to reduce the volume of paper used<br />

<strong>for</strong> the manufacturing of shoe boxes <strong>and</strong> their carbon emissions<br />

by 65% <strong>and</strong> 10 tonnes respectively. PUMA went into partnership<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h Yves Béhar, a designer from the San-Francisco-based<br />

Fuseproject. He was commissioned to devise a new concept of<br />

packaging <strong>for</strong> the millions of pairs of shoes sold annually. Less<br />

packaging requires fewer raw materials, along w<strong>it</strong>h lower<br />

water consumption <strong>and</strong> energy necessary <strong>for</strong> <strong>it</strong>s manufacture,<br />

lower weight <strong>and</strong> less waste. Béhar designed a “Clever L<strong>it</strong>tle<br />

Bag” <strong>for</strong> multiple uses to replace cardboard covers. This new<br />

l<strong>it</strong>tle bag protects shoes from damage from the moment they<br />

leave a production facil<strong>it</strong>y till the customer takes them home.<br />

The l<strong>it</strong>tle bag will be launched on the Czech market this autumn.

Since the new shopping mall in FILADELFIE opened at the beginning of<br />

October, the range of shops <strong>and</strong> services available at <strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong> has been<br />

further extended in order to even further enhance <strong>it</strong>s multipurpose character.<br />

The major<strong>it</strong>y of services are introduced at the request of <strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong> tenants,<br />

as indicated in regular satisfaction surveys. Why not come <strong>and</strong> join us <strong>for</strong> a<br />

Albert<br />

Profile: It is a typical modern supermarket<br />

of the Albert chain. It has <strong>it</strong>s own bakery<br />

making fragrant <strong>and</strong> fresh bread, rolls,<br />

pies <strong>and</strong> cakes every day. You can also<br />

buy fru<strong>it</strong> <strong>and</strong> vegetables, sausages <strong>and</strong><br />

other food there, in add<strong>it</strong>ion to select nonfood<br />

<strong>it</strong>ems. Albert focuses on low prices.<br />

How FILADELFIE<br />

Was Created<br />

Newly completed, the 17-storey FILADELFIE building will be a newly<br />

dominating feature of <strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong>. The construction of this new shopping <strong>and</strong><br />

office development was commenced in May 2008, <strong>and</strong> now, after two years of<br />

construction <strong>and</strong> ten years of preparation, the building has been completed.<br />

As a result, the range of this building complex, comprised of office space as<br />

well as shops <strong>and</strong> services, has been significantly extended.

Tapping the foundation stone 2. 10. 2008<br />

The FILADELFIE building is named after a<br />

biblical c<strong>it</strong>y closely associated w<strong>it</strong>h such<br />

values as fa<strong>it</strong>hfulness <strong>and</strong> diligence. The<br />

c<strong>it</strong>y of Filadelfie was built in Asia Minor,<br />

presently in Turkey, between 159 <strong>and</strong><br />

138 BC. Earthquakes were a common<br />

occurrence in the area <strong>and</strong> the c<strong>it</strong>y was<br />

almost razed to the ground in 17 AD. Roman<br />

Emperor Tiberius had the c<strong>it</strong>y reconstructed<br />

in a highly impressive way <strong>and</strong><br />

the c<strong>it</strong>y was often called “L<strong>it</strong>tle Athens”.<br />

The word Filadelfie comes from Greek<br />

<strong>and</strong> means “brotherly love”. This has now<br />

become the inspiration <strong>for</strong> the name of<br />

this building in the heart of Europe.<br />

The FILADELFIE building is a new add<strong>it</strong>ion<br />

to the sophisticated group of buildings<br />

which <strong>for</strong>m the harmonious concept of the<br />

entire <strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong> complex. Moreover, a<br />

large park, whose green areas provide a<br />

pleasant relaxation zone, has also opened<br />

this year. Another place to relax, a terrace<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h a remarkable view, can be found on<br />

the roof of the building which towers<br />

17 storeys above the ground.<br />

Aside from almost 30,000 square metres<br />

of office space, the FILADELFIE building<br />

has a shopping arcade where <strong>for</strong> example<br />

an Albert supermarket, a dm chemist’s,<br />

a dry-cleaner’s <strong>and</strong> laundry offer their<br />

services. Underground parking facil<strong>it</strong>ies<br />

will serve the tenants of the FILADELFIE<br />

building as well as the wider public.<br />

The PSJ Company was the general contractor,<br />

the DaM studio was behind the<br />

arch<strong>it</strong>ectural concept, PASSERINVEST<br />

GROUP is the investor <strong>and</strong> UniCred<strong>it</strong><br />

Bank funded the construction.<br />

A Variety of Sports on a Single Playground<br />

A sports complex, designed to bring joy to kids as well as adults, has been<br />

created behind the building of the Elijáš Christian School.<br />

Both the sports grounds are open in a<br />

summer <strong>and</strong> winter schedule, the summer<br />

period lasting from the beginning of May<br />

to the end of October w<strong>it</strong>h an inflatable<br />

hall on the ground <strong>for</strong> the rest of the year.<br />

Multipurpose sports ground<br />

Basically, the multipurpose sports ground<br />

serves a variety of sports on a single p<strong>it</strong>ch<br />

or court where you can play, <strong>for</strong> instance,<br />

football, floorball, basketball, h<strong>and</strong>ball,<br />

volleyball <strong>and</strong> tennis. The playing area is<br />

44 x 24 metres in size <strong>and</strong> is fully l<strong>it</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

night sessions.<br />

This sports ground has been designed to<br />

There is a children’s rock climbing wall, a<br />

climbing pole, a rope course <strong>and</strong> children’s<br />

trapezes. Young lovers of basketball<br />

who have not yet grown to regulation<br />

height have a mini-basketball court at their<br />

disposal, including hoops w<strong>it</strong>h adjustable<br />

height. Naturally, there is a place <strong>for</strong><br />

adults accompanying young sportspeople<br />

– benches where they can relax under<br />

shady trees <strong>and</strong> enjoy themselves while<br />

watching their children play.


Elijáš Basic School <strong>and</strong> Nursery School<br />

<strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong> continues to grow <strong>and</strong> develop, offering not only new office<br />

buildings, but also shops <strong>and</strong> services, restaurants, green areas <strong>and</strong> leisure<br />

time attractions. Similarly, <strong>change</strong>s have occurred at the school located<br />

in Michle, between the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary <strong>and</strong> the<br />

FILADELFIE building. There the Dino Elementary School was replaced by the<br />

Elijáš Christian Basic School, where teaching began on 6 September.<br />

Founded by the Seventh-day Adventist<br />

Church, the Elijáš Christian Basic School<br />

<strong>and</strong> Nursery is this church’s first basic<br />

school in this country, although they run<br />

over 7,000 various schools w<strong>it</strong>h over<br />

one million students the world over. This<br />

school does not have any administrative<br />

catchment area.<br />

The history of the Christian school<br />

<strong>and</strong> nursery school<br />

This Christian Basic School <strong>and</strong> Nursery<br />

School opened in the <strong>for</strong>mer building<br />

of another basic school in Prague – 4<br />

Kunratice, on 1 September 2008. At this<br />

time, the first <strong>and</strong> second <strong>for</strong>ms began<br />

<strong>and</strong> one higher <strong>for</strong>m opened each following<br />

year, which means that fourth <strong>for</strong>mers<br />

are now our oldest pupils. Although Elijáš<br />

is presently an incomplete basic school<br />

as there are just the “first level <strong>for</strong>ms” (i.e.<br />

the first to fifth <strong>for</strong>m), <strong>it</strong> is envisaged that<br />

a complete school w<strong>it</strong>h a capac<strong>it</strong>y of 180<br />

pupils will provide teaching here.<br />

Focus of the school<br />

The Elijáš School focuses on Christian<br />

values, a healthy lifestyle <strong>and</strong> English. Its<br />

amb<strong>it</strong>ion is to be included in the “Healthy<br />

Schools” programme, which adheres to<br />

the principles of creating a healthy environment<br />

at school, an education towards<br />

a healthy lifestyle <strong>and</strong> behaviour fostering<br />

good health.<br />

There are three linchpins of the “Healthy<br />

School” programme: the cosiness of the<br />

environment, healthy learning <strong>and</strong> open<br />

partnership. The principles which have<br />

been adopted are as follows: meaningfulness,<br />

possibil<strong>it</strong>y of choice, appropriateness,<br />

cooperation <strong>and</strong> participation. Stimulating<br />

methods, based on the principles<br />

of individual personal growth are used.<br />

The school is perceived as a democratic<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y in an open-hearted public.<br />

Christian education as a subject<br />

During their entire attendance, the basic<br />

school pupils take the subject of Christian<br />

education to learn Bible prophesy, Christian<br />

principles <strong>and</strong> values. The elements<br />

of Christian<strong>it</strong>y are also incorporated into<br />

the other subjects in a su<strong>it</strong>able <strong>for</strong>m. The<br />

pupils are strongly encouraged to develop<br />

a personal rapport w<strong>it</strong>h Jesus Christ as<br />

well as to read the children’s Bible <strong>and</strong><br />

other Christian l<strong>it</strong>erature. Every morning,<br />

the children participate in a joint morning<br />

med<strong>it</strong>ation complete w<strong>it</strong>h a prayer towards<br />

learning Christian principles <strong>and</strong> values.<br />

Individual education<br />

Individual education is an official alternative<br />

to the normal school attendance up to<br />

the first to fifth grade in the Czech Republic.<br />

About 30 pupils have enrolled in the<br />

programme of individual education in the<br />

Elijáš Basic School. This method of teaching<br />

is su<strong>it</strong>able <strong>for</strong> children who are geared<br />

towards an individualised approach <strong>and</strong><br />

whose parents are able <strong>and</strong> ready to take<br />

responsibil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>for</strong> their education. There<br />

may be a great many reasons <strong>for</strong> “home<br />

teaching” such as a h<strong>and</strong>icap, a learning<br />

or personal difficulty, frequently moving<br />

house <strong>and</strong> so on.<br />

Healthy lifestyle<br />

The physical aspects of a healthy lifestyle<br />

encompass a range of physical exercises,<br />

along w<strong>it</strong>h the principles of healthy living.<br />

Generally, physical education <strong>and</strong> playgroups<br />

focusing on sports are a natural<br />

part of basic school curricula. The Elijáš<br />

Basic School offers some extras, w<strong>it</strong>h a<br />

lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, i.e. plant products,<br />

eggs, milk <strong>and</strong> milk products. This<br />

is an extremely high qual<strong>it</strong>y diet, prepared<br />

in accordance to principles of nutr<strong>it</strong>ion as<br />

stipulated by the government author<strong>it</strong>ies <strong>for</strong><br />

catering <strong>for</strong> pre-school <strong>and</strong> school children.<br />

English language<br />

Good knowledge of at least one world language,<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h a particular emphasis on English,<br />

is an important part of education in<br />

the Elijáš Basic School. This is why English<br />

teaching is extended <strong>and</strong> even first <strong>for</strong>m<br />

children are taught English, w<strong>it</strong>h the help of<br />

modern tools <strong>and</strong> teaching methods.<br />

Nursery school<br />

Every child is received by Christians as<br />

a gift from God, <strong>and</strong> as having a unique<br />

personal<strong>it</strong>y. The teaching staff of the Elijáš<br />

Nursery School, located in the building of<br />

the Commun<strong>it</strong>y Centre in Prague 4, aim to<br />

develop those key competencies that are<br />

necessary <strong>for</strong> a child in the contemporary<br />

world. In add<strong>it</strong>ion to <strong>for</strong>ming Christian<br />

character, <strong>it</strong> is essential to prepare children<br />

<strong>for</strong> a Christian life in the post-modern<br />

world <strong>and</strong>, first <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>emost, <strong>for</strong> eternal<br />

life according to the Bible. What counts<br />

are harmonious relationships between<br />

parents, children <strong>and</strong> teachers – children<br />

are led to achieve a sense of individual<strong>it</strong>y,<br />

healthy self-confidence <strong>and</strong> responsibil<strong>it</strong>y<br />

<strong>for</strong> themselves.<br />

Also, an emphasis is placed on thoughtfulness<br />

<strong>and</strong> tolerance towards other<br />

children, including those w<strong>it</strong>h physical<br />

<strong>and</strong> mental h<strong>and</strong>icaps as well as different<br />

cultural <strong>and</strong> spir<strong>it</strong>ual values.<br />

The nursery school also teaches English.<br />

Why do parents choose Elijáš?<br />

It is not a surprise to see that active Christians<br />

opt to send their children to a Christian<br />

school. Contrary to expectations, the<br />

Elijáš school has been chosen by a great<br />

number of people who regard themselves<br />

as unbelievers. The reason behind their<br />

decision is the friendly environment <strong>and</strong><br />

the opportun<strong>it</strong>y to direct their children<br />

toward the Christian values that are somehow<br />

vanishing from our society.<br />

Rules <strong>and</strong> financing<br />

The nursery school is available <strong>for</strong> children<br />

from three years of age, while the basic<br />

school is <strong>for</strong> pupils of the first to fourth<br />

<strong>for</strong>m in the school year of 2010/2011.<br />

The basic school tu<strong>it</strong>ion fees are CZK<br />

12,000 a year, which, being an endowed<br />

sum, will increase in the future. Staying at<br />

the after-school club is free. You will pay<br />

CZK 24,000 <strong>for</strong> the nursery school a year<br />

in 2010/2011, w<strong>it</strong>h an increase to CZK<br />

31,200 which is planned <strong>for</strong> the school<br />

Changed My Att<strong>it</strong>ude toward<br />

Br<strong>and</strong>s<br />

The PUMA br<strong>and</strong> has been setting trends in<br />

leisure-time fashion <strong>for</strong> younger <strong>and</strong> older<br />

clientele alike in recent years. In this country<br />

especially, <strong>it</strong> is one of the most popular br<strong>and</strong>s<br />

due to <strong>it</strong>s qual<strong>it</strong>y, trad<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> chic design. Every<br />

new collection w<strong>it</strong>h the wild beast in the emblem<br />

is eagerly awa<strong>it</strong>ed in every shop.<br />

PUMA AG Rudolf Dassler Sport is a<br />

German-based international company that<br />

has been manufacturing qual<strong>it</strong>y fashion<br />

<strong>and</strong> sports apparel since 1948. PUMA is<br />

famous <strong>for</strong> <strong>it</strong>s support <strong>and</strong> sponsorship of<br />

football teams <strong>and</strong> sportspeople – <strong>it</strong> has<br />

taken under <strong>it</strong>s wings the likes of Pelé, Diego<br />

Maradona <strong>and</strong> Usain. PUMA is also a<br />

sponsor of the Czech national football team.<br />

In the following interview, Hana Kotulánová,<br />

Deputy General Manager/Head of<br />

Finance of the Czech branch of PUMA AG,<br />

talks about her career as well as the br<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>it</strong>self, <strong>it</strong>s metamorphoses, along w<strong>it</strong>h some<br />

hot tips.<br />

At which univers<strong>it</strong>y did you study <strong>and</strong><br />

are you currently engaged in <strong>your</strong> field<br />

of study?<br />

I graduated from the Univers<strong>it</strong>y of Agriculture<br />

majoring in Economics of Agriculture,<br />

so I have deviated from my field of study<br />

only partially. Agriculture was not very<br />

popular when I graduated <strong>and</strong>, instead,<br />

business <strong>and</strong> banking were growing. Logically,<br />

my steps led there.<br />

Could you tell us something about<br />

<strong>your</strong> track record?<br />

Basically, I have gone through all the<br />

levels of corporate finance <strong>and</strong> accountancy<br />

<strong>and</strong> I was even responsible <strong>for</strong><br />

logistics <strong>and</strong> implementation of economic<br />

software <strong>for</strong> a while. I started my career<br />

as an accountant w<strong>it</strong>h Interczech, an<br />

importer of shingles <strong>and</strong> garage doors.<br />

Then I joined Melzer to become an<br />

implementer of economic software. I was<br />

young <strong>and</strong> not very experienced among<br />

the old salt accountants of customers –<br />

<strong>it</strong> was not easy! Also, my job as a senior<br />

accountant in Cali<strong>for</strong>nia, USA, was a<br />

school of life. Working <strong>for</strong> a company<br />

selling protective tools <strong>for</strong> farmers, I was<br />

struggling w<strong>it</strong>h English as I had been a<br />

hardworking German student at school.<br />

And be<strong>for</strong>e my current job, I was at an<br />

international clinic where, in the post of<br />

financial supervisor, I became a member<br />

of senior <strong>and</strong> upper management.<br />

PUMA, my dream job, followed in 2001.<br />

Mirek Ryba <strong>and</strong> I were the first employees<br />

of <strong>it</strong>s Czech branch.<br />

Which of those professions do you<br />

remember fondly <strong>and</strong> why?<br />

It is hard to have my pick of them, each<br />

pos<strong>it</strong>ion has helped move me somewhere<br />

<strong>and</strong> I enjoyed each of them. Once<br />

I stopped liking them, I had to move on<br />

somewhere else.<br />

Do you think that this road has indirectly<br />

taken you to the PUMA br<strong>and</strong>?<br />

Partially. It is defin<strong>it</strong>ely true, but my partner<br />

largely contributed to my decision at the<br />

time. It started to be a classic professional<br />

bore at my previous work, in the international<br />

clinic in Prague. PUMA was looking<br />

<strong>for</strong> a chief accountant then. Although I was<br />

overqualified <strong>for</strong> that pos<strong>it</strong>ion, I decided to<br />

hear the offer. After several interviews w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

the Austrian management, we decided<br />

that I would take the pos<strong>it</strong>ion of internal<br />

aud<strong>it</strong>or of the group. It was a great<br />

challenge, w<strong>it</strong>h lots of business trips to<br />

Hungary, Russia, South Africa <strong>and</strong> Brazil.<br />

At the same time, I satisfied my hunger <strong>for</strong><br />

travelling.<br />

How did you use to perceive this<br />

br<strong>and</strong> earlier, compared w<strong>it</strong>h these<br />

days?<br />

As I am a thrifty person by nature, br<strong>and</strong>s<br />

did not cast a spell on me. However,<br />

PUMA <strong>change</strong>d that <strong>and</strong> I fundamentally<br />

appreciate the qual<strong>it</strong>y <strong>and</strong> prestige of<br />

PUMA <strong>and</strong> other br<strong>and</strong>s now.<br />

PUMA has been one of the most<br />

popular br<strong>and</strong>s, especially among<br />

young people, in recent years. It is<br />

even more popular than Adidas. What<br />

do you think is behind this fact? Have<br />

there been any <strong>change</strong>s in br<strong>and</strong> communication<br />

or strategy?<br />

Defin<strong>it</strong>ely yes. Our aim <strong>for</strong> the 1990s<br />

remains the same even <strong>for</strong> today: to be<br />

the most sought-after sport <strong>and</strong> lifestyle<br />

br<strong>and</strong> on the market. We have adapted<br />

most of our marketing activ<strong>it</strong>ies to this aim<br />

<strong>and</strong>, as a result, we cooperate w<strong>it</strong>h Ferrari,<br />

Red Bull, Tereza Maxová, Aňa Gaislerová,<br />

Tomáš Rosický <strong>and</strong> Tomáš Dvořák.<br />

Our products have been designed <strong>and</strong><br />

developed in cooperation w<strong>it</strong>h Alex<strong>and</strong>er<br />

McQueen <strong>and</strong> other personal<strong>it</strong>ies. Experts<br />

on our br<strong>and</strong> will certainly remember the<br />

famous Mostro <strong>and</strong> Speedcat shoes.<br />

However, we would like to be regarded<br />

not only as a “cool” br<strong>and</strong>, but also as an<br />

organisation that cares about the environment<br />

<strong>and</strong> renewable resources.<br />

How are you planning to present the<br />

br<strong>and</strong>? Does the Czech br<strong>and</strong> have a<br />

chance to implement <strong>it</strong>s own ideas,<br />

or does <strong>it</strong> have to uncond<strong>it</strong>ionally assume<br />

the corporate ident<strong>it</strong>y?<br />

We are going to launch new packing of our<br />

products on the Czech <strong>and</strong> Slovak markets.<br />

In my opinion, <strong>it</strong> is not only fun, but<br />

also environmentally friendly in accordance<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h our philosophy. Since 1 August, the<br />

post of General Manager has been held<br />

by Paul Gautier, who is a marketing guru<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h a wealth of experience from PUMA in<br />

Europe <strong>and</strong> America alike.<br />

Let’s get back to the question: to what<br />

extent do you take the Czech mental<strong>it</strong>y<br />

into consideration in Bohemia; does<br />

the Czech br<strong>and</strong> presentation differ<br />

from that in other countries?<br />

As we are given relatively free reign to do<br />

our marketing activ<strong>it</strong>ies, there is certainly<br />

something to look <strong>for</strong>ward to. I recommend<br />

that you pay special attention to<br />

our shop in Palladium, which is our retail<br />

flagship. It will be full of life, because life is<br />

not only work but also fun <strong>and</strong> parties w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

friends. You do not have to be in the Olympic<br />

Games; you can win a game of sk<strong>it</strong>tles<br />

<strong>and</strong> have a lot of fun. The whole year 2011<br />

will be conceived in this manner.<br />

How much time do you spend at work<br />

<strong>and</strong> what does <strong>your</strong> work mean to you?<br />

As much time as necessary. I am not keen<br />

on working overtime <strong>and</strong> at weekends,<br />

which applies to me <strong>and</strong> my team alike.<br />

My work is important to me <strong>and</strong> has<br />

helped me overcome many hard times.<br />

Do you have time <strong>for</strong> <strong>your</strong> private life<br />

<strong>and</strong> activ<strong>it</strong>ies?<br />

Recently yes, but <strong>it</strong> could always be better.<br />

What do you do in <strong>your</strong> free time?<br />

What are <strong>your</strong> interests <strong>and</strong> hobbies?<br />

I enjoy dancing, jogging <strong>and</strong> hiking.<br />

I am a member of the Balance Club<br />

Brumlovka, where I attend zumba<br />

classes <strong>and</strong> sometimes simply jog, walk;<br />

in short, I can’t s<strong>it</strong> still.<br />

Your company is based at <strong>BB</strong><br />

<strong>Centrum</strong>. Are you satisfied w<strong>it</strong>h this<br />

office park? Does <strong>it</strong> meet <strong>your</strong><br />

cr<strong>it</strong>eria <strong>for</strong> a “good address”?<br />

I personally regard <strong>BB</strong> <strong>Centrum</strong> as<br />

one of the best office centres. It was<br />

obviously built w<strong>it</strong>h a vision behind <strong>it</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

w<strong>it</strong>h consideration. I am obliged to Mirek<br />

Ryba, our <strong>for</strong>mer General Manager, who<br />

is working in the Russian Federation now,<br />

you like?<br />

Health. I know how <strong>it</strong> feels if you are<br />

lacking in <strong>it</strong>. Now, I would like to give<br />

advice to those that have finished reading<br />

this interview: Do not underestimate<br />

preventative examinations! Or <strong>your</strong><br />

partners e<strong>it</strong>her – they will be a tower of<br />

strength to you.<br />

S<strong>and</strong>wiches <strong>and</strong> soups<br />

in FILADELFIE<br />

In the Czech Republic, the fast casual restaurant chain Express S<strong>and</strong>wich<br />

promises the best of the s<strong>and</strong>wich trad<strong>it</strong>ion supplemented by the principles of<br />

modern <strong>and</strong> healthy eating. Their fifth restaurant has recently been opened in<br />

the shopping mall of the FILADELFIE building. We decided to check up on<br />

the advertised qual<strong>it</strong>y.<br />

New shops are still settling into the mall,<br />

where we were welcomed by a simply yet<br />

very efficiently furnished space, dominated<br />

by a big serving counter <strong>and</strong> two large<br />

screens displaying the current offer. The<br />

interior in shades of green evokes cleanliness<br />

<strong>and</strong> natural origins. The restaurant<br />

serves over a counter, customers can<br />

choose from the menu <strong>and</strong> the staff<br />

members prepare the food from ingredients<br />

displayed in the serving counter, right<br />

in front of the customers’ eyes. The food<br />

is then wrapped <strong>and</strong> placed on a tray.<br />

The customers can take their trays to bar<br />

tables or they can s<strong>it</strong> in armchairs at small<br />

tables in the middle of the room.<br />

This is not a trad<strong>it</strong>ional restaurant,<br />

where customers would spend long hours<br />

eating their lunch. The word Express in<br />

<strong>it</strong>s name is clear. It serves fast but qual<strong>it</strong>y<br />

food at any time of the day. That’s why<br />

large numbers of customers can be<br />

served in a relatively small space, there<br />

are no long queues <strong>and</strong> you shouldn’t<br />

struggle to find a seat.<br />

You won’t be leaving hungry<br />

Soup is the foundation – that’s what our<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>mothers used to say. Not many<br />

Czech people would be satisfied w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

nothing but s<strong>and</strong>wiches on the menu. Of<br />

course <strong>it</strong>’s a must to get something warm<br />

into the tummy. That’s why you can find<br />

several homemade soups on the menu.<br />

They are prepared from fresh ingredients<br />

by the chef Martin Poláček. When you<br />

combine the soup w<strong>it</strong>h a salad, you can<br />

get a quick, healthy <strong>and</strong> calorie balanced<br />

lunch.<br />

All the ingredients loaded into <strong>your</strong><br />

baguettes, ciabattas or wraps are also<br />

fresh. We have chosen the word loaded<br />

on purpose because the baguettes<br />

baked according to a special recipe are<br />

cut in a certain way that creates, because<br />

of the dough qual<strong>it</strong>y, a cav<strong>it</strong>y in the shape<br />

of a l<strong>it</strong>tle boat. And almost half a kilo of<br />

filling can go into this cav<strong>it</strong>y – a portion<br />

that will surely fill up even a proficient <strong>and</strong><br />

very hungry eater. The choice of wh<strong>it</strong>e or<br />

brown bread is a matter of course.<br />

Apart from s<strong>and</strong>wiches you can<br />

choose one of the salads on offer <strong>and</strong> if<br />

you wish to finish w<strong>it</strong>h a sweet treat we<br />

suggest you try one of the homemade<br />

desserts.<br />

Something <strong>for</strong> everyone<br />

The truly great advantage of the<br />

Express S<strong>and</strong>wich restaurant is that<br />

the menu can satisfy both those who<br />

prefer solely vegetarian food <strong>and</strong> the<br />

determined meat eaters. As the food<br />

is prepared right in front of <strong>your</strong> eyes,<br />

you can select which ingredients you<br />

want in <strong>your</strong> s<strong>and</strong>wich or <strong>your</strong> salad<br />

<strong>and</strong> which you don’t. The staff won’t be<br />

surprised even if you ask <strong>for</strong> gluten-free<br />

food, <strong>and</strong> at least one soup from the<br />

restaurant’s menu is adapted to this<br />

diet.<br />

The opening hours are also very convenient.<br />

You can pop in <strong>for</strong> breakfast at<br />

8 in the morning on weekdays, stop <strong>for</strong><br />

a light <strong>and</strong> healthy lunch at lunchtime<br />

or grab a s<strong>and</strong>wich on <strong>your</strong> way home<br />

from work <strong>and</strong> save <strong>your</strong>self having to<br />

worry about supper.<br />

The staff will be happy to prepare<br />

<strong>your</strong> food to take away in a box or a<br />

paper bag. And if, lets say, you were to<br />

organize a longer meeting <strong>and</strong> needed<br />

to provide refreshments, you could<br />

easily order a special menu <strong>and</strong> have <strong>it</strong><br />

Question <strong>for</strong>...<br />

Where did the idea to start a business<br />

in fast food come from?<br />

During my last year at univers<strong>it</strong>y, I was<br />

considering what to do after graduation.<br />

I was always attracted to business. During<br />

my vis<strong>it</strong> to the Un<strong>it</strong>ed States, where I<br />

could see a large number of various kinds<br />

of fast food businesses, my friend <strong>and</strong> I,<br />

my schoolmate <strong>and</strong> an associate, started<br />

thinking about running a Quick Service<br />

Restaurant. And then, my associate said<br />

the word: ‘s<strong>and</strong>wiches’. We wanted to<br />

make the best s<strong>and</strong>wiches in town. And<br />

the idea was born!<br />

This year, we are entering our tenth year<br />

of existence, we sell quarter of a kilometre<br />

of s<strong>and</strong>wiches daily <strong>and</strong> several hundred<br />

thous<strong>and</strong>s of customers have tried our<br />

products.<br />

Express S<strong>and</strong>wich is not fast food<br />

but fast casual. What does this mean<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>your</strong> guests?<br />

Fast foods around the world are changing<br />

<strong>and</strong> their philosophy is coming closer<br />

to restaurants. Fast casual is somewhere<br />

in the middle on the imaginary line. The<br />

customer can choose his meal <strong>and</strong> all<br />

ingredients, but above all everything he<br />

gets is high qual<strong>it</strong>y, fast <strong>and</strong> served in a<br />

pleasant environment. That is how we<br />

meet the most important attributes of the<br />

fast casual restaurant. Thanks to visible<br />

preparation, the customer can select<br />

the ingredients in his s<strong>and</strong>wich or salad,<br />

but primarily he can visually check what<br />

he actually gets. Unlike in trad<strong>it</strong>ional fast<br />

foods, the customer can eat his meal w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

classic cutlery from a glass plate. Beverages<br />

are also served in glass or ceramic.<br />

Fast casual flexibly responds to <strong>change</strong>s<br />

of the menu, has daily special offers <strong>and</strong><br />

above all has stylishly designed restaurants.<br />

Supply of qual<strong>it</strong>y ingredients is fundamental<br />

<strong>for</strong> restaurants. How do you<br />

select <strong>your</strong> suppliers?<br />

We try to choose suppliers who underst<strong>and</strong><br />

our concept based on fresh food<br />

<strong>and</strong> speed. We show all our new suppliers<br />

round the facil<strong>it</strong>y, we show them how we<br />

use the individual ingredients <strong>and</strong> how<br />

the final products are made. It is then<br />

easier <strong>for</strong> them to meet our dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

requirements. For example, we like to use<br />

seasonal vegetables to prepare our homemade<br />

soups every day.


Our trip to Ukraine<br />

Have you ever wondered what happens to the clothes you have given to char<strong>it</strong>y?<br />

Various organisations use various ways <strong>and</strong> if you search <strong>for</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

through several chat rooms <strong>and</strong> blogs you can find out much to <strong>your</strong> disappointment<br />

that the donated clothes are sometimes sold in second-h<strong>and</strong> shops<br />

or turned into cloths <strong>for</strong> washing cars. Nevertheless you took so much care<br />

choosing only the nice <strong>and</strong> clean stuff, to make sure <strong>it</strong> could be of good service<br />

to somebody else. That’s why we are presenting you w<strong>it</strong>h this report from<br />

our trip to Zakkarpatia in Ukraine, which we made at the beginning of June<br />

this year. The primary goal of this trip was to document <strong>and</strong> show the public<br />

in the Czech Republic how their donated goods helped.<br />

During both last year <strong>and</strong> the current year<br />

we organised char<strong>it</strong>y collecting of used<br />

clothes, shoes <strong>and</strong> toys in the Commun<strong>it</strong>y<br />

Centre on the premises of the <strong>BB</strong><br />

<strong>Centrum</strong>. Many families got new clothes<br />

<strong>and</strong> we could see many children smiling<br />

thanks to the generos<strong>it</strong>y of the kind donors.<br />

Throughout our trip to Ukraine, we could<br />

see amazing results of the material aid<br />

that has been provided <strong>for</strong> many years by<br />

Maranatha o.s. in cooperation w<strong>it</strong>h the association<br />

Pomoc bez hranic o.s. in Zakkarpatia<br />

Oblast in Ukraine. During our trip we<br />

vis<strong>it</strong>ed a children’s home <strong>for</strong> h<strong>and</strong>icapped<br />

kids, district hosp<strong>it</strong>al, school <strong>and</strong> we also<br />

individually vis<strong>it</strong>ed several families. One of<br />

the most moving experiences came when<br />

we vis<strong>it</strong>ed a settlement on the Hungarian<br />

border. When we say “we are helping<br />

socially disadvantaged families”, you can<br />

hardly imagine the true meaning of these<br />

words until you see <strong>it</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>your</strong>selves. The<br />

living cond<strong>it</strong>ions of these people are truly<br />

shocking. The homes where they live are<br />

more like shanties, built from branches <strong>and</strong><br />

sticks, covered w<strong>it</strong>h mud. Pieces of plastic<br />

or fibre cement are used as a roof. As I was<br />

looking at these “houses”, I wondered what<br />

happens when <strong>it</strong> rains <strong>and</strong>, even worse,<br />

how do the people survive winter? The<br />

s<strong>it</strong>uation in villages <strong>and</strong> towns is slightly<br />

better. People live in houses, although in<br />

most cases the cond<strong>it</strong>ions are still alarming.<br />

The houses are falling apart, walls are covered<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h mould, mud floors are covered by<br />

thin woven carpets <strong>and</strong> you can hear the<br />

wind wailing through broken windows. The<br />

whole family often sleeps in one room. The<br />

only room serves basically <strong>for</strong> all purposes.<br />

In the poorest parts of the country, you can<br />

see children w<strong>it</strong>h dirty faces running around<br />

barefoot; their clothes full of holes hang on<br />

the last weak fibres.<br />

After we had returned we started planning<br />

further aid activ<strong>it</strong>ies immediately. One of them<br />

is going to be another collection of clothes,<br />

as <strong>it</strong> was very successful both last <strong>and</strong> this<br />

year. We are pleased by the concern of all<br />

who are not negligent to the destiny of these<br />

people. We believe that the clothes collecting<br />

activ<strong>it</strong>y will have the same amazing results in<br />

the future. The first clothes collection will take<br />

place on 4 – 6 October 2010 <strong>and</strong> we would<br />

like to extend <strong>it</strong> to collecting blankets, sheets,<br />

<strong>and</strong> because the winter is getting closer we<br />

will also collect winter clothes <strong>and</strong> boots. During<br />

the collection, on Monday 4 October from<br />

6 p.m., we are planning a meeting <strong>and</strong> a talk<br />

about Ukraine w<strong>it</strong>h the key founder <strong>and</strong> chairman<br />

of the association Pomoc bez hranic, Mr.<br />

Jan Lauterbach, who prefers personal contact<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h donors <strong>and</strong> subsequently w<strong>it</strong>h the recipients,<br />

<strong>and</strong> who transports the donated goods<br />

to the designated places in person. You will<br />

have a unique opportun<strong>it</strong>y to hear about the<br />

lives of people <strong>and</strong> about experiences from<br />

the trips to Ukraine at first h<strong>and</strong>.<br />
