≥ surveySurvey 2012≥ The quality of life and work at BB Centrum in 2012≥ We present the results of the satisfaction surveyIt is for the fourth time that a major tenant satisfaction survey has been carried out atBB Centrum. The online questionnaire is especially, and traditionally, aimed at obtaininginformation about the opinions and attitudes of individuals working at BB Centrum. The survey was commissioned by the developer PASSERINVEST GROUP to a contractor –NMS Market Research Company.≥ The survey builds upon the previous tenants satisfaction surveyscarried out in the years 2001, 2004 and 2008≥ The survey was undertaken from the 4th to 17th June, 2012≥ The data collection technique: online questionnaire≥ A total of 10,140 employees of the companies based at BB Centrumwere invited to take part in the survey≥ A total of 2,225 employees responded at least 80% of thequestionnaire, representing 22% of all the invited people≥ The data analysis reflects answers provided by the respondents whohave answered at least one question – the analysis is based on theresponses of 2,345 participantsA great many people from eachcompany operating at BB Centrum tookpart in the survey. This clearlydemonstrates that the BB Centrum“residents” take a lively interest in theprospects of this complex. “Incomparison with other surveys carriedout by our company, the return ratewas very good – over one fifth of all theBB Centrum employees participated.Take GE Money Bank, for instance, where 41% of the employeesresponded,” says Ondřej Veis, ExecutiveDirector of NMS MarketResearch agency. “The questionnairewas completed by 2,300 employees ofthe BB Centrum complex,” adds Veis.“Both the high level of participationand the actual survey results gave megreat pleasure. The number ofrespondents demonstrates that peoplecare for the place where they spend asignificant part of their day, beingwilling to participate in shaping itsfurther direction. Information obtainedin this manner are of high value to usbecause, thanks to it, we can evenbetter and more effectively work on thefurther development of BB Centrum,”says Radim Passer, Chairman of theBoard, PASSERINVEST GROUP, in hiscomment on the results of the survey.Similar to the previous surveys, the questions addressed satisfaction with workingconditions, shops, services and time spent in the entire area of BB Centrum. They can be simply summarized by the following headings:≥ The overall image of BB Centrum≥ Transport and parking≥ Services and catering4

≥ survey≥ BB Centrum ImageThe results show that the overall imageof BB Centrum, in the eyes of itsemployees, has improved since theprevious survey in every examinedcategory. People notice new services andgoods offered in particular shops, nothing but positively assessing thegradual development of “their” BBCentrum. What wins favourableassessment is, first and foremost, thecleanliness of the entire area, includingentrances and reception areas ofparticular buildings. Also, landscapedgreen areas and Baar Park are a bigadvantage of the complex. BB Centrumcompares favourably with officecomplexes that we, until recently, admired beyond our western borders interms of shape and services available, now exceeding them in numerouscriteria. This all contributes to thesatisfaction of those who work andHow do you generally assess BB Centrum according tothe following criteria?spend a significant part of their day here.“The entire survey clearly demonstratesthat BB Centrum is a modern officecomplex which meets the discriminatingdemands of its employees. Theyappreciate the BB Centrum developer’sattention to the treatment of theadjacent area and the complex, which, ifnot even better in many respects, can becompared to what the managers ofmultinational corporations areaccustomed to,” says Ondřej Veis toconfirm the image of BB Centrum.Where do you get informationabout shops and services at BBCentrum? The graph is based on all respondents (N=min. 2,237).The chart is based on the data from all respondents(N = min. 2,237).Positive assessment is also given to BB Centrum Review and eReview, which are read by almost a third of employees. Thesemagazines are, together with colleagues, valuable sources of information about what is happening and what is new at BB Centrum.≥ Transport and Parking atBB CentrumWhat means of transport doyou use to get to work?A significant advantage of BB Centrum, its extremely easy transportaccessibility, has been achieved with thecontribution of its own shuttle service, introduced, by agreement with thetenants, as early as May 2007. Thequestion about this shuttle service wasalready included in the 2008 survey and, based on the responses, the shuttleservice has been further extended.About 50% of the employees currentlyuse this means of transport severaltimes a week. The BB Centrum busservice is seen as satisfactory by anoverwhelming majority of passengers(85%). The BB Centrum buses shouldoperate in shorter intervals in themorning or be a little bit bettercoordinated with the timetable of thePublic City Transport. The chart is based on the data from all therespondents (N = min. 2,237).5

≥ surveyDo you use the BB Centrum shuttle services to get to work?Do the intervals of theBB Centrum shuttle buses suityou? The chart is based on the data from those respondents who at least occasionally use the shuttleservice (N = 1,753).The developer’s response:Given the changes introduced to the timetables of the Prague Integrated Transportsystem at the beginning of September, we are committed to adapting the shuttleservice schedule to the new circumstances, striving to harmonize the intervalsbetween them. What, sadly to say, cannot be dealt with are situations which occuras a result of the delays of public transport buses leading to occasional mismatchesbetween the intervals of public transport and BB Centrum services.Slightly different is the situation regardingtransport accessibility “and friendliness”of the complex to cars. Although theassessment has improved in comparisonwith the year 2008, those commuting bycar or having feedback from motorizedvisitors to the complex claim that thenumber of free parking places shouldincrease, whereas paid parking placesshould be reduced. There are fewerpeople travelling to BB Centrum solelyby car, yet approximately one third ofrespondents complain about the lack offree parking spaces. Half of them areconcerned with high parking fees. Similarresults are found in that part of the surveythat focuses on the satisfaction of visitorsto particular firms with parking facilitiesin the area. How satisfied are you with parking at BB Centrum?Lifts, which are inlarge numbers atBB Centrum, can beregarded as a certainmeans of transport, albeit speakingabout the interior ofthe buildings. Theyhave produced somewrinkles especiallyto the users ofFILADELFIE.The chart is based on the data from those respondents who atleast sometimes commute by car to BB Centrum (N = 1,248).Relatedespeciallyto buildingsFILADELFIEand GAMMAThe developer’s response:By law, we are obliged to introduce a certain number of parkingspaces, strictly determined by a relevant ordinance, for every building. In this respect, we must emphasise that we always provide at least10 to 15% of parking spaces in excess of this calculation. Besides,we have developed independent parking facilities, such as the publicparking lot at Brumlovka or FILADELFIE, and we are also preparing carparks for the public in the Residential Park Baarova. At the same time,we operate and offer other parking spaces on several open-air parkinglots. With regard to this, we are aware of sufficient parking reserves. These issues are explained in detail at www.bbcentrum.czThe developer’s response:As the software was modified in Building FILADELFIE, the capacity oflifts has increased from six to nine people. Also, the office space for newtenants will be prepared as soon as possible and, once the preparationwork has been completed, the number of passenger lifts will rise byone, to a total of six. The vacant buttons on the control panel were usedfor programming two-digit numbers – all you have to do to call thelift going to the 17th, 16th, 15th and 14th floor is to press one buttoninstead of two, which serves as an improvement in service. Moreover, the floor where the lift is currently situated is newly announced insidethe lift. With regard to the other buildings of the complex, we will passon this in-depth information, including comments, to the owners andmanagers of the BB Centrum buildings.6

≥ survey≥Services, Restaurants and CanteensDo you know which services people can’t are the Albert supermarket, the dmimagine their life at BB Centrumdrogerie (chemist’s), of the restaurants:continuing without? The most popular the Grosseto Italian pizzeria and theMango Chinese restaurant, andfurthermore, the pharmacy and theCzech Post office. The recently openedSpar City shop has also won greatpopularity.Make a list of five establishments (shops, services, restaurants) which you visit most frequentlyat BB Centrum. The chart is based on the datafrom all the respondents(N = min. 1,289).The BB Centrum employees would like to avoid coinciding openinghours of some shops with their working hours. The reason issimple: they would like to take advantage of some of the servicesprovided by BB Centrum, before they get to work or after theyleave. This is true especially of the Czech Post office, the Albertsupermarket, and the pharmacy, as well as canteens, wherepeople would buy breakfast or a snack on their way to work.Almost one third of the respondents have their meals at canteenson a daily basis, which is why a large part of the survey wasdevoted to them. They mostly received average assessment interms of the quality and variety of dishes. People are satisfied withhygiene and the speed of service. How satisfied are you with thecanteen services according tothe given criteria? How many times a week do you have your mealsin particular catering establishments withinBB Centrum?CanteensRestaurantsThe chart is based on the data from those respondents who at leastoccasionally have their meals in restaurants (N = min. 2,045).The chart is based on the data fromall the respondents (N = min. 1,981).The chart is based on the data fromall the respondents (N = min. 1,981).Interestingly enough, it is men who formthe majority of regular canteen goers.Women, by contrast, prefer eating inrestaurants. The most popular of themis undoubtedly the Maranatha vegetarianrestaurant, where approximately 14%of the women go at least twice a weekwhile over 50% of the men have neverbeen there. Aside from the service andthe quality of dishes (“Love at first sight,Healthy, fresh and delicious dishes forreasonable prices...”), some peoplemanage to also assess those thingsthat have no apparent connection to themeals, as attested by the comments. Orperhaps there may be some connection:“There is a beautiful aquarium inBrumlovka, but the sight of thetriggerfish is very gloomy. This fish needsa huge mass of water, and watching itangrily swimming from one side to theother, doesn’t help me enjoy my lunch.”7

≥ surveyHow often do you visit the followingrestaurants at BB Centrum? The chart is based on the data from those respondents who at leastoccasionally have their meals in restaurants (N = min. 1,994).The developer’s response:Naturally, the detailed results of thesurvey concerning particularcanteens will be communicated, including the comments, to themanagers and owners of theseestablishments. We believe inself-reflection and improvementwhere people have complained aboutnegative aspects and what they maybe lacking.≥ And what other services would you like to see at BB Centrum? The survey results suggest that, first andforemost, a shoe repair shop, perhaps, combined with a shoe shop, would comein handy. It would especially pleasewomen – 14% of them would welcome it.On the other hand, men probably do notseem to care about the “longevity” oftheir shoes, because less than 3% of themexpressed interest in this service. What kind of services are you lacking andwould you welcome to the complex? What cuisine/restaurant would you welcomeat BB Centrum? The chart is based onthe data fromall the respondents(N = 998).The chart is based onthe data fromall the respondents(N = 1,336).With regard to restaurants, a place offeringtypical Czech cuisine for reasonable priceswould please most fans – roughly one thirdof respondents would welcome this service. As shown by several comments, some ofthem would even prefer a real “fourth-classpub”, others would like to have an Italian,Indian or Pakistani restaurant here. 13% ofthe respondents would like to visit a cheaprestaurant, regardless of the type of foodprovided. The developer’s response:A shoe collection point has been available in the FILADELFIE mall or, morespecifically, in the Net Industry laundry and dry cleaner’s since September.Furthermore, we strive – if humanly possible – to meet our tenants’requirements, which is why we negotiate with the operators of sought-afterrestaurants. At present, another two office buildings (Building G and BuildingDelta), with a potential for a Czech restaurant, are under construction. Interms of the prices for dishes served in the BB Centrum restaurants, theoperators have invested relatively large amounts into equipment, not tomention paying rent, and, in view of this, they are unable to reduce prices incomparison to the canteens, whose costs are not so high.8

≥ surveyOn the condition that its prices werereduced or a lump-sum entrance feewas introduced, people would show moreinterest in the Balance Club. It is the highprice charged for a yearly membership thatexplains why over 75% of respondents havenever been there. Alternatively, some whoformerly attended the Balance Club haveterminated their membership and havebegun visiting a different fitness centre.Anyway, some people have demonstratedtheir interest in a certain kind of sport(some only demonstrating a sensehumour?): “I would appreciate if there werea high quality horizontal bar and parallelbars in the complex. I would be perhaps thehappiest person. Also, special “sleepingcorners” would be awesome – a spot whereyou could take a 30 minute nap after lunch. To work in such a place would be the job ofmy dreams.”How often do you visit thesports centre, Balance ClubBrumlovka? The chart is based onthe data fromall the respondents(N = 2,268).The developer’s response:Significant reduction in prices would attract a great number of new people to theBalance Club, but on the other hand it would lead to the overall decrease in the Clubrevenues which would trigger a number of negative changes. To remain profitable,we would have to limit services and reduce the level of facilities and hygiene alongwith shifting the overall direction of the club. This would certainly lead to thedisappointment and departure of numerous existing members. Everything isa matter of the quality to price ratio. BB Centrum is committed to offering thehighest humanly possible standard of services in the area. The Balance ClubBrumlovka is an integral part of this effort.≥ Who is most interested in the prospects of BB Centrum? One third of the respondents was madeup of people 30 to 35 years of age. Thosewithout children constituted themajority of the respondents; females andmale were absolutely equal in number.People taking part in the survey mostfrequently commute to work by meansof public transport, have their meals ata canteen at least three times a week anddo their shopping at Albert. They likegoing to Baar Park and occasionally visita restaurant situated within the complex, giving preference to the PizzeriaGrosseto or the Mango Chineserestaurant. What is your job description inthe company based atBB Centrum? Also interesting were responses to thequestion concerning the length of timethe participants have been workingwithin BB Centrum. The share of peopletaking part in the survey, who have beenworking at BB Centrum for over threeyears, amounts to 47%. The secondHow many years haveyou been working atBB Centrum?largest group of respondents (40%)comprises people working atBB Centrum for up to one year, the majority of them coming fromcompanies based in the new BuildingFILADELFIE.The complete results of theSatisfaction Survey and thewinners of the competitioncan be found atwww.bbcentrum.cz/en/6081/downloads9

≥ projectGreen Buildings Go Wellat BB CentrumBuilding FILADELFIE,completed in summer2010, boasts a BREEAMcertificate and buildings G andDelta, the newest additions to BBCentrum, aspire to achieve the samegoal. What is the meaning of thiscertification programme, what sortsof buildings are certified, and whatdoes this certificate indicate? Weinterviewed Lenka Matějíčková fromEC Harris – BREEAM InternationalAssessor.Lenka Matějíčková - EC Harris -BREEAM International AssessorBREEAM stands for British ResearchEstablishment EnvironmentalAssessment Method, which ranksamong the most frequently adopted anduniversal programmes for assessing theenvironmental impact of buildings. Sinceestablished in 1990, a BREEAM certificatehas been awarded to more than 200,000buildings, not to mention over a millionregistered projects.Buildings constructed in the continentalEU countries, including the CR, areassessed according to the BREEAMEurope International 2009 standards, taking into consideration that the EUcountries have adopted legislationthat is governed by European ratherthan the UK laws. Intended for newstructures, reconstructions and customconversions, this certification method isoverwhelmingly used for office buildings.Aside from buildings that are beingnewly developed (such as BB Centrum’sbuildings G and Delta), the assessmentis also given to existing buildings, whichcan be awarded a BREEAM In Use (BIU)certificate. The BIU is another standard, which – being established in the UKin 2009 – is intended for all existingnon-residential buildings designed forcommercial, industrial, shopping oradministrative purposes. What are the areas assessed for theBREEAM certification and how manyassessment grades – categories exist? With regard to the BREEAM system, the building is assessed according toa range of criteria set in several areas.Assessment is given to the project, construction, and the use of the building, and the particular areas include energyand water efficiency, impact on theenvironment, flora and fauna, impacton the building user (e.g. interiorquality) and the overall performanceof the building. The building can earna BREEAM In Use certificate after anassessment in three parts: Part 1: Assets,Part 2: Building Management, Part 3:Users. Each category is examined on anindependent basis – without regard ofthe others.Part 1: Asset: Evaluation of theinherent performance characteristicsof the building based on its built form, construction and the technical facilitysystems of the building.Part 2: Building Management:Assessment of management policies, procedures and practices related tothe operation of the building, andenvironmental impacts such as carbonand waste generation, the consumptionof water, electricity and other resources.Part 3: User: Description of performancein the use of the building by its tenantsor owners. This part takes into accountthe understanding and implementationof management policies, procedures andpractices related to the user’s activities inthe assessed building.Based on a point score, the buildingachieves an overall score according tothe following percentage scheme:% score BREEAM score Stars 85 % Outstanding ✴✴✴✴✴How long is the certificate in effect – isit issued “forever”, or can the set scorechange over the years? What counts is the type of certificate. The BREEAM certificate is issued“forever”, but you can have a buildingcertified according to the BREEAM InUse criteria over the years. The lattercertificate is in effect for only a year, which can be extended up to three yearsunder certain conditions (except forPart 3, which should be renewed everyyear).Who is the author of this certificationprogramme? Both programmes, BREEAM and BIU,have been developed by BRE Global,a company operating in the UK in thefield of certification of fire resistance, safety and sustainability, which – asidefrom issuing relevant certificates –works as an independent advisor inthese areas.BRE Global is a daughter company ofBRE Trust, a non-profit organisationfocusing on education and research,18

along with improving awareness andfostering innovative methods in orderto ensure that the public will benefitfrom the environment created by theconstruction.Responsibility for the BREEAMcertification process lies with an Auditor(BREEAM International Assessor/BREEAM In Use Assessor), whoevaluates the quality of a building on thebasis of a body of accurate and reliableevidence that the building fulfils setcriteria.(The BREEAM In Use (BIU) scheme iscurrently based on the standards andrules as valid in the UK. When can thelaunch of a version designed for otherEuropean countries be expected? Whatsubstantial differences are envisaged?Yes, projects developed outside the UKterritory are being assessed accordingto the system based on the UK rules andstandards, which are not always entirelyapplicable in the other EU countries. This is why we can expect the launchof a BIU – International version at theend of the summer of 2012, based onEuropean standards. It will significantlyfacilitate certification processes outsidethe UK territory, along with helping toachieve higher scores in those areaswhere it was previously difficult.Building DeltaBuilding G≥ The profile of the building:• This new administrative building is located in the south-eastern partof BB Centrum, being circumscribed by Vyskočilova and VáclavaSedláčka streets• The H-shaped construction consists of two interconnected eightstoreystructures• The total area available for rent covers 38,300 square metres, including 3,000 square metres of retail space on the ground floor ofthe building• A total of 794 parking spaces are available on five basement storeys• Office floors can be linked via a bridge so that the tenant can have anarea of up to 4,400 square metres on a single level• A separate reception desk is planned in both parts of the building• It has a BREEAM Green Building certificate≥the beginning of construction:• December 2011≥ Profile of the building:• This new administrative building is located in the north-eastern part ofBB Centrum, being circumscribed by Baarova and Michelská streets• Offers a total area for rent of 6,800 square metres, including1,000 square metres of retail space on the ground floor of the building• A total of 148 parking spaces are available• There is a bus stop just outside the building• It has a BREEAM Green Building certificate• Abundant green areas surround the building; there are roof terraces, which have already proved successful on the other BB Centrumbuildings, and an artificial riverbed, in addition to the new Baar Park≥ Planned completion of construction:•First quarter of 2013≥ the beginning of construction:• October 2011More information:Further information about the building can be found atwww.budova-delta.czContact: Naďa Filina, e-mail: nada.filina@passerinvest.cz,Tel.: +420 724 505 505More information:Further information about the building can be found atwww.bbcentrum.czContact: Naďa Filina, e-mail: nada.filina@passerinvest.czTel.: +420 724 505 50519

≥ Balance Club BrumlovkaFitness Zone with New,Unique EquipmentThe Balance Club Brumlovka rightfully ranks among the leading Czech wellness and fitnessclubs. Maintaining the top position is not easy these days, given the wide variety ofadvances and inventions in fitness technology. Indeed, every major centre, establishedafter the year 2007, boasts newer equipment. To be number one on the Czech market, wehave to be always on the alert, striving to follow the latest industry trends. This is why theBalance Club Brumlovka has decided to invest again in order to completely replace theexisting equipment of cardio and fitness zones and the spinning hall.It was absolutely clear about our choice of a contractorfor the equipment. Our excellent personal experiencewith STAR TRAC and the construction and designinnovations of their latest product line are behind extendingour cooperation with this company.STAR TRAC is a U.S.-based company operating in the fitnessindustry since 1979. They were the first in the world to havedeveloped a treadmill designed solely for commercial use infitness centres. Moreover, a great many pretty cool things usedfor everyday exercises come from the design studios of thiscompany. Thanks to their studies into the behaviour, habitsand exercise preferences of a wide range of users, regardlessgender, age, physical condition or body proportions, wehave water bottle holders, personal fans, as well as integratediPod and iPhone connectivity. STAR TRAC, as the onlymanufacturer of cardio and fitness equipment, is currentlyoffering a comprehensive range of TOP products to replacethe existing facilities.20

And what exactly is prepared for you?STRENGTH MACHINESThe premium product line of strength products, STAR TRAC Inspiration, featuresseveral welcome changes. An easier-to-control load is provided by the Lock NLoad system. With the help of this patented system, you can simply adjust the loadat the touch of a colour-coded button. Due to the sophisticated biomechanicalproperties, you can make moves naturally. As the majority of the machines areunilateral, they enable your right and left hand to work independently of eachother, resolving differences between the stronger and weaker part of your body.Animated instructions for exercises, located on the protective cover of weights, arethe icing on the cake. The Leverage plate-loaded strength products are designedto offer muscle conditioning which is natural and maximally effective. Operationswith the machine are easier and safer, due to the low-set points for loading theplates.CARDIO MACHINESThe cardio zone is undoubtedly themost frequently used part of the fitnessarea. This explains why, in addition toreplacing the machines, it has beenrecently extended. we have added twotreadmills, one cross trainer and oneeSpinner. Certain pleasant innovationshave been introduced to the treadmills, such as the Soft Trac impact absorptionsystem, wider belts, and easy-to-controlrate and angle through a rocker switchon the central console. A share of thenew cardio machines is equipped withan integrated touch-sensitive displayand a docking station for your iPodsand iPhones. Also, you have yourown TV tuner and direct headphonesoutput. As with the existing eSpinners, you can benefit from instructionsfrom Kimberly, a virtual runningcoach. Whether running, walking, orspinning, your exercise under the StarTrac coach’s supervision will make bigdifference.SPINNINGSpinners have a reduced bottom bracketQ factor, i.e. the distance between thepedals. As a result, they bear moreresemblance to road bikes in terms ofride qualities. Also, you can newly adjustthe seat and handlebars, independentlyof one another.≥ CONTACTBalance Club BrumlovkaVyskočilova 2140 00 Prague 4Tel.: +420 234 749 811Web: www.balanceclub.czOpening hours:Mon.–Fri. 6.30 am–11 pm,Sat.–Sun. ≥ foundationI Give Work to My HeartThis is the motto of the volunteercentre, Lékořice, which performsits activities in two of Prague’shospitals: Thomayer Hospital, Prague4, and University Hospital, KrálovskéVinohrady. The principal mission of Lékořice, how it was established, and where itprovides its service are the topics weaddressed in our interview with KarinPospíšilová, Executive Director of thiscivic association.Whenever I start speaking aboutLékořice, I can’t help laughing becausepeople sometimes mistake our name, meaning liquorice in English, for thenames of other herbs such as cinnamon, which sound similar in Czech, or evensavoury, which is, by contrast, completelydifferent. This is funny, a sense of humankindness. It is much easier to build arapport then. And this is what our workis about: ordinary human encounters,a smile. A warm smile will bring evengreater pleasure when seen in thosesituations where it is not expected. Wework in hospitals to provide support andassistance to patients as well as theirfamilies and hospital staff.Who was behind the genesis of Lékořiceand what was the main stimulus forestablishing this volunteer centre? Most of us founding mothers weresitting and breast-feeding our babies atthis genesis. We were five friends with“family management” at our fingertips.Logically, we came up with an idea ofgetting involved in activities outside ourown homes. We had the closest ties to thechildren in Thomayer Hospital. So we gotin touch with the Head Nurse to outlineour naive plan about how we laypeoplecould work in the hospital. Perhaps wehad the necessary good will, becauseotherwise we wouldn’t have so quicklybecome the first volunteers there. Andthe hospital staff who let us into theirterritory definitely didn’t lack good willeither. How many volunteers are presentlyassociated in Lékořice and who is mostactively involved in its activities?Since established in 2005, Lékořice hasbeen active in three Prague’s hospitals– we worked in IKEM between 2008 and2010, in addition to the TH and the UHKV - and over 500 regular volunteershave participated in the activities of ourcentres ever since. These people devoteabout two hours a week of their free timefor a period of at least three months. Butit might be for several years as well - ourlongest serving volunteer, Mrs Marjánka, has been with us since 2006. But wealso cooperate with so-called one-timevolunteers, people who, despite nothaving so much time, want to help. Thisis why they come to participate „only“in particular events, according to thecurrent needs. During recent years, wehave also managed to enlist cooperationand volunteers from commercialcompanies, who - aside from beingpatrons of our projects - help to fundthem. In view of this, people of workingage gradually increase their participationin our activities. As far as the numerical representation - itis proportional to the age. We have fewerhelpers from among the older people, but on the other hand, it is fair to say thatvolunteer work is highly valued by thesepeople, who, having it firmly anchoredin their programme, are also reliable anddedicated. Young people are, on the otherhand, in the majority. They are oftenstudents who are just looking aroundat the world and thinking about lifeand which occupation they will follow.Although the middle generations are thebusiest and the most tired from buildingtheir own careers, they are, as I see it, themost interesting. These people have notforgotten to contemplate the meaning oftheir activities and to consider the valuesof society. They are ready to continuedeveloping their personality, knowingthat no pain, no gain. Volunteer activitiesare about a „balanced economy“ - I giveonly what I have to give, and I am nottoo embarrassed to receive it, becausethe sick are, rather than being poor, admirable people who are fighting adisease, enduring pain and showingmuch greater patience than I usually doat an ordinary meeting.Where do your volunteers work andwhich hospital wards are in the greatestdemand? In Thomayer Hospital and UniversityHospital Královské Vinohrady, prospective volunteers most frequentlyask about children. In terms of seniorpatients, the situation is worse, and itis the most difficult to volunteer in thedepartments where people between20 and 60 years of age are staying.Volunteering is voluntary for bothparties: the volunteer and the patientsalike. They must both want the mutualcontact and should find it pleasingand rewarding. The coordinators are22

Well aware are also some ofthe companies based at BB Centrum. Everycompany has its own specific strategy ofcorporate responsibility which determines theform of its staff volunteer activities.Take Telefónica, for instance, which is a longstandingcorporate volunteer as this company, through its Nadace O2, has organized a varietyof more than ten events since 2008. Thanks toalmost 200 employees who have participated, the doors of the Oncology Ward in ThomayerHospital are covered with a new coat of paint, the passage to the pottery workshop and thesupporting facilities of Our Café have changedbeyond recognition, and the terraces of theChildren’s Wards of Pavilion U have brightenedup considerably.Cooperation with GE Money Bank startedwith a grant in 2009. Thanks to the excellentwork of the GE Volunteers association, participating company volunteers have justimplemented several rather exacting projects. The Children’s Psychiatry Department, whosepatrons are the bank’s top managers, is beingchanged under their hands. The volunteerscome to give a hand, not only on the dayswhich are scheduled by the company, but alsoin their free time.Last year, Hewlett-Packard also enlisted asa corporate volunteer within Lékořice. Thecompany enables its staff to devote up to fourhours monthly to volunteer activities. In otherwords, the employees are allowed completeliberty to choose a form of assistance theylike. Some of them – becoming regularvolunteers – visit patients in the wardswhereas others have decided to provideprofessional assistance (computer work, helpwith graphics, teaching English) while stillothers have come to offer manual help suchas by adding a coat of paint or decorating.≥ CONTACTKarin Pospíšilovákarin.pospisilova@ftn.czWeb: www.lekorice.com; www.ftn.cz;www.fnkv.cz23

Astheir name is by no means unknown in Prague and its surrounding area, we entered theestablishment with fairly high expectations. The first plus point we noticed isits extremely strategic location. All you have to do is to get offa bus from Budějovická,... and you arehere. Are you coming from Budějovickáon foot? You still can’t miss this newcafé. And you will almost certainlynotice it while driving your car throughBB Centrum, being situated at a majorintersection along the main street, asyou leisurely scan the area while waitingfor the light to change. The Quality Based on DetailsWhat also deserves a positive assessmentis the interior. The stylish, modernenvironment, with comfortable seats inthe corporate colour scheme, invites youto come in and sit down. Not to mentionrefrigerated display cases filled with allthe goodies! The assortment is actuallyvery wide here, so you can hardly believethat this vast variety of cakes, desserts, open sandwiches, baguettes and icecream, rather than being delivered froma delicatessen wholesaler, have beenproduced in the confectioner’s ownfacility. Anyway, you can “taste on yourvery tongue” to confirm that they offeroriginal products made from quality, meticulously selected ingredients. Thefirst taste alone will prove that you arenot eating some prefabricated substancefull of cheap substitutes and “whippedwater”.The high quality of Mr and Mrs Hájek’sproducts can be also exemplified by theiruse of real dairy (rather than vegetable)cream for decorating cakes and desserts. Also, the main ingredient in theircheesecakes is genuine Philadelphiacream cheese from the US. And wecan find even more details behindthe success and acclaim of the fourconfectioner’s shops run by Hájek &Hájková.Obliging Staff and Wi-FiThe staff certainly deserve another wordof praise. The service is professional, fastand, most importantly, pleasant. A smileon their lips and a helpful demeanourare par for the course. Hájek & Hájkovávalue the customer highly and theiremployees clearly do their work withlove. Whether you’ve come only forcup of coffee, an ice cream or an opensandwich, you needn’t worry that youwill be a nuisance to them with such asmall order.Favourable also are the opening hours:from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays, opening three hours later at weekends. If you arrive one hour before the closingtime, you are entitled to a 30% discounton all the cakes, desserts and opensandwiches – all the products must besold out, because fresh goods, producedduring the night, are delivered in themorning.24

As this newly opened café andconfectioner is located at the businesscentre, a great many visitors may findfree Wi-Fi connection essential and, should their laptop or iPad batteries rundown, they can easily charge them formone of a number of power points underthe seats. However, it is not all praise for this shop. We’ve had a single complaint: ratherloud music is played on the premises.Perhaps, it would help to lower it so thatthe visitors can hear one another better.≥ opening hoursMo.–Fr.: 7 am –7 pmSa.–Su.: 10 am–7 pm≥ Plus:Wide assortment, fresh products every day.Everything can be ordered take away.Appealing daily breakfast menu.≥ Minus:Rather loud muzak, making conversationdifficult.≥ from MENU≥ Questions for FrantišekHájek and NaděždaHájkováWhy did you decide to open a caféjust at BB Centrum? We had long considered opening anew establishment when the spaceand locality offered at BB Centrumcaptivated us.fruit cakecake MadagaskarIf you could choose only one itemfrom your range of goods, whatwould it be?We would definitely choose themarvellous Madagaskar cake, originallyinvented by František Hájek. The proof of its quality is, amongother things, the fact that it is oneof the most frequently sold kinds ofcake.forest fruit cake, vanillacheese cake, strawberryHájek & Hájková Confectioner’sBuilding AlphaVyskočilova 1461/2a140 00 Prague 4Web: www.cukrarna-hajek-hajkova.cz25

≥ projectFamily Atmosphere and IndividualizedApproach to Pupils, These Arethe Benefits of The Christian PrimarySchool ElijášIt is the third school year that The Christian Primary School Elijáš has begun in a buildingimmediately adjacent to Prague-Michle’s BB Centrum this September. Its school bell firstrang there in September 2010, and the institution currently offers full-time study in sixgrades with an after-school club and leisure time activities until late afternoon. It includes two classes of nursery school based in theCommunity Centre building at BB Centrum. Also, individual education of children from around the countryis specific to the school. The school aims to provide children with a quality education. They benefit from a family atmosphere, a safe environment, and an individualized approach to pupils, along withdeveloping talents and fostering a healthy lifestyle. Foreignlanguages taught by a native speaker as well as Christianethics are part and parcel of the curriculum. Teaching isprovided according to the School Educational Programme, established in line with the Framework EducationalProgramme, agreed on by the Ministry of Education, Youthand Sports (for more information see www.zs.elijas.cz). Theschool’s statutory authority is the Czech Association of theSeventh-day Adventist Church. With the new school year 2012/2013, a new headmistress,Hana Loderová, came to the school. Now, let’s read what shesays in her contemplation about the deep meaning of schoolfor human life.26

≥ projectEvery workday my journey to work takes me past the modernbuildings of BB Centrum, where I pass people rushing to offices,on business to the accompaniment of a noise from Prague’straffic arteries. But after a few steps, the hustle and bustle of the city fadesdown and, out of sudden, as if by magic, a view of the ancientbuilding of The Christian Primary School Elijáš opens beforemy very eyes. And I feel as if I’ve entered an entirely differentworld. The world of children’s fantasy and imaginations; theworld of safety and security. The world where children can bedreaming about what they want to be, miles away from thereality of the hectic life bustling all around. This is how the story should go. The world of children differsfrom that of adults. ≥ MaranathaAutumn and Health That Never Fails...As the summer season gradually comes to an end, we are facing a more strenuousperiod. Autumn is, generally speaking, associated with extra demands on our immunesystem, frequent changes in the weather, the shortening of days and lengthening ofnights, higher smog levels at the beginning of the heating period, along with a dietpoor in nutrients. All of this obviously not only involves the enormousrisk of episodic and temporary outbreaks of cold, flueor tonsillitis, but also more severe diseases inherentin modern life such as arthritis in the joints, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis or brittle bone diseaseand cancer. What eases the transition between summer and autumn is ourwisdom and patience. Ideally, you should take some regularsteps to increase your hardiness throughout the summer, along with the sun and fresh air. Taking walks through openforests or parks, doing regular intensive and enduranceworkouts, going to bed before midnight and eating avegetarian diet that is rich in micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other phytonutrients are consideredbest in our latitudes. What basic steps should not be forgotten? At the beginning of the day, it is considered ideal to spendsome time contemplating the direction and sense of our lives, along with cultivating an attitude of gratitude, humility andpatience. King Solomon’s Book of Proverbs or King David’sspiritual poetry seem particularly suitable to this purpose. It isadvisable to continue by stretching muscles for a short whileand have a short intensive workout and a short enduranceworkout. After the short exercise, we should take a quick shower, switching between warm and cold water. Always have acold one at the end to activate your immune system and toincrease the blood supply to limbs and the upper layers ofskin, which serves as a major detoxification and respiratoryorgan. Then we can indulge ourselves with a healthy andsubstantial breakfast. Rather than white bread and butteror margarine, sausages, eggs, black tea or coffee, we shouldhave cereal pudding with fruit and nuts or wholemealbread and vegetable spread, vegetables and nuts. The mostsuitable drinks include a grain drink made from green barley, freshly juiced root vegetables or, possibly, high-quality graincoffee such as YANNOH or CARO. This sort of breakfastis rich in polysaccharides, water and soluble fibres. Whilepolysaccharides are a perfect “fuel” and a staple source ofenergy, soluble fibres moderate the absorption of energy andnutrients, which is crucial for a stable metabolism duringthe morning hours, when the demand on our attentionand alertness is highest. Also, the high volume of insolublefibres helps to clean our intestines and micronutrients inabundance boost our immunity and nervous system, alongwith strengthening muscles and bones. We should gradually help our children and grandchildren getused to this sort of breakfast because during childhood andyouth they build upon this physical foundation for the rest oftheir lives, not to mention steering them away from bad habitspromoted by tacky adverts and seductive, poor-quality foods, such as white baguettes, sausages, waffles, candies, chips andchemically produced soft drinks. Those of you who have a sedentary profession, rememberto have short breaks of 30 to 45 minutes. It is recommendedto stand up from your computer and have a look at yourcolleagues :-) This is how your attention and mental resistanceto immediate stressful situations is strengthened. Also, don’t forget to follow a regular drink regime, as a real risk ofdehydration is tied to sedentary professions. These habits andattitudes will help you avoid unnecessary sore throats andcolds in autumn.I wish you great joy in the forthcoming days.Yours!Mgr.
