Dear Friends,
as i get settled in my new role as nicholas president and ceo at boys & girls clubs of boston, i have
made it a priority to get out into the communities we serve to talk to our members and their parents,
and to meet with elected officials and business leaders. i’ve also had the pleasure of meeting with
many of our board members, major supporters and program partners. i am so grateful for the warm
welcome and expressions of support that i’ve received from all of you.
i come to my new role with 18 years of experience working with kids and families in boston and
chelsea, and seeing first-hand the effects of poverty, crime and substance abuse. from my new
perspective, i am more inspired than ever by the hard work of our staff, by the generosity of our
volunteers, and by the resiliency and optimism of our members, despite the significant challenges
they face.
the economy has affected all of us, but these uncertain times are hardest on those who are most
vulnerable. the children and teens in the communities we serve often exhibit behaviors that are
symptomatic of their stressful life circumstances. now more than ever, we must stay focused on
serving their complex needs.
to achieve our two major goals this year – to continue to be a dependable resource for current
members and their families, and to reach youth we don’t currently serve – it’s so important that
we stay financially strong.
that’s why i am especially thankful for your continued investment in bgcb. our mission remains our
priority every day. With your ongoing support, we can deepen our impact on the nearly 14,000 youth
we currently serve, reach out to under-served populations in communities where we have clubs, and
expand our service footprint to reach even more youth who need us.
our 115-year history has taught us how to get through challenging times and, working together, we
will continue our essential work for the benefit of today’s youth who will ensure a strong future for
our great city.
this annual report tells very moving stories about club members, alumni and volunteers. these –
and the thousands more stories like them – are what keep me motivated to push harder to reach
our ambitious goals. i know that you share my commitment to helping our city’s youth, and for
that i am deeply grateful.

Dear Friends,
as you read this annual report, boys & girls clubs of boston is in a strong position, despite
daunting economic challenges facing our country.
on July 1, Josh Kraft became the new nicholas president and ceo, bringing his vision, deep
experience, entrepreneurial spirit, and passion for our mission to his role. in just a short time,
he has begun to guide us towards our goal of serving more youth. We are so grateful to linda
Whitlock for her inspiring leadership and for ensuring such a smooth transition. We are excited
about this new chapter in bgcb’s history.
our comprehensive campaign, successfully completed on June 30, has already enabled us to
serve hundreds more youth, especially teens, in our renovated and expanded yawkey club of
roxbury and blue Hill club in north Dorchester. the campaign also significantly strengthened
our endowment, giving us greater financial stability to face the fundraising challenges that
certainly lay ahead.
We are humbled by the generosity of 8,000 campaign donors whose every dollar helped make a
difference. the unprecedented achievement of the campaign was only possible because of the
extraordinary leadership of the campaign co-chairs and Honorary co-chairs, and the generous
support of our caring donors (see pages 17 – 24).
this fall, we launched a powerful pro-bono advertising campaign to raise visibility with the
dual goal of reaching new members and broadening our donor base. We are deeply grateful
to the staff at Hill Holliday who provided creative work on the campaign and related web site.
We are also grateful to the many media outlets that donated ad space. you will see elements
of the campaign throughout this annual report, and i hope you will go to our special web site
investinachild.org to learn more.
bgcb depends on fundraising to raise 85% of our annual operating budget. With some
government grants already reduced, we are concerned about the year ahead. However,
we feel fortunate to enter the year on solid financial ground for the 14,000 youth we
currently serve, and for the many more who will need us.
thank you for continuing to support our mission and ensuring that our city’s most vulnerable
children and teens have a safe haven in which they can become responsible adults. With your
help, we have accomplished so much, and we pledge to stay focused on helping the kids and
families who need us now more than ever.

The people you most depend on to support you at
important times of your life aren’t guaranteed to be
there. unfortunately i found this out the hard way
when i lost both of my parents. although this would
throw a lot of people off track, i didn’t let it stop me
from doing the right thing. now i am at an important
time of my life and i have to find my inner strength
and face it without my parents’ support.
My mother died of alcohol problems when i was 11
years old and just three years later my father died
following an illness. My mother had given birth to
seven boys and four girls. i’m the seventh oldest and
i have been helping take care of my four younger
siblings since i was young. it was extremely hard for
me to get over my parents’ deaths, but it was even
harder for me to face my new responsibilities. i had
to adapt so fast that i really didn’t have time to enjoy
my childhood. i had to make sure that my siblings’
homework was done, that they took showers and
brushed their teeth, and that their clothes were ironed
for the next day. i had to walk them to the bus stop
and pick them up.
everything changed on January 24, 2003. i still
remember it was a cold winter night and my brother
was hanging outside the house with a couple friends
around midnight; i was sleeping and then suddenly
i heard gun shots. i jumped up out of my sleep, so
scared. My sister got up and heard my brother in the
hallway screaming for help, but it was too late. before
she could get to him, the police were dragging his
body out the door. i saw my brother lying on his back
with bullet holes in his neck and stomach. i feel bad
for my nephew because he never really got a chance
to know his father, who was murdered because he had
been involved in a gang when he was younger. after
that happened i knew that the streets aren’t the way
to live life. i didn’t want to follow his footsteps and be
involved in a gang.
i was so terrified for so long after that happened
thinking that someone was coming after my family.
i started to give up on everything. i wasn’t motivated.
i felt stressed out all the time. i lost focus on my future.
this is what i was going through coming out of middle
school on my way to high school.
During my sophomore year, i began to realize that i
had to set a good example for my brothers and sisters
because they were looking up to me. i started to make
an impact on my siblings in a way i didn’t even notice
at the time. i started working harder in school and
bringing home good report cards. it rubbed off on
them and they started to bring in good grades. My
little brother and i have this competition to see who
can get the most trophies. i’m winning so far; i have
18 and he has seven. i believe he’s going to beat me
real soon if he keeps working hard.
What made me different from the rest of the crowd
was how i occupied my time after school. to stay out of
trouble i was involved in numerous activities including
football, basketball and counseling at the yawkey
boys & girls club. after two years on my school’s
Varsity football team, i became team captain – not
only because of my talent, but because of my
leadership skills. playing sports for my last three
years helped me mature on and off the field.
a place that helped me grow up was the boys & girls
club. it was like a second home to me. if i ever had a
problem i could go there and the staff would treat
me like their own son. i loved going there after school
because i would meet new people every day; it was a
place to do my homework, play basketball, and many
more things. it was a place where i just felt safe and
had so much fun every day that i would forget about
how bad my life was sometimes. this place opened my
eyes to a lot of things, especially college. last year i
went on a historically black college tour with the club.
it was a great experience to see college life outside
of boston, and it’s something that i could see myself
doing in a couple years. i plan to stay for a year or two
at Massbay, where i am now, and then transfer so i can
get my college degree.
life can be difficult sometimes, but that’s the way it
is. i have learned from the mistakes and experiences
i had in the past. some things, you just can’t take for
granted because tomorrow is not promised to be the
same as it was yesterday. but life goes on!
”

Yvonne, age 11, began coming to the Charlestown Club four years
ago, just after her father passed away. Her face is somber as she
remembers this difficult time in her life, but she explains that the
Club provided a distraction from her devastating loss and even
allowed her to have fun.
“It’s easy to make friends here, because you are hanging out with
girls your own age, and the staff are really easy to talk to,” she
explains. “I’m really glad I have the Club.”
At home, Yvonne has taken on a number of responsibilities to
help her younger brother and sister. As the oldest, she knows it’s
important to be a positive role model. She’s grateful to have Club
programs such as Girls’ Group and Strong Women, Strong Girls to
teach her how to communicate effectively while respecting herself
and others.
“Girls’ Group has taught me how to express myself when hanging
out with girls I know,” she explains. “It’s exciting to meet new people,
and learn how to stick up for myself in a peaceful way.”
Yvonne clearly values the programming at the Club, mentioning art
and music as two of her favorites. However, it’s the people who are
the real reason she loves to spend every day after school here. In
particular, she has formed a close bond with Zizi, the Club’s pre-teen
specialist, who has become a mentor and friend. “My mother is
working all the time so it’s hard to reach her. When I have a problem,
I can talk to Zizi and she will help me.”

old. i live with him and my 13-year-old brother. Krishna is my
mentor here at the charlestown club. i can tell her anything.
it’s different from talking with my grandfather because she’s
not in my family and, as a woman, i can talk with her about
more things. she’s just always been there for me.”

Every young person needs guidance at one time or another.
our members tell us through annual surveys that having a
caring staff person whom they trust, and with whom they
can confide, is one of the most important benefits of club
membership. this year, we formalized a mentoring initiative
to provide meaningful one-on-one relationships with caring
adult role models to our members who need it most: pre-teens
and teens.
Life After the Club Mentoring
the transition from “club kid” to college student or full-time
employee can be so difficult for some of our members that
they lose sight of their goals. the life after the club program
aims to provide club members, who are high school juniors
and seniors, with individual attention and guidance to ensure
post-high school success. staff throughout the clubs are paired
as a mentor with a teen club member. staff conduct mock job
interviews, help with college essays, and organize events with
alumni and guest speakers from the corporate community or
higher education. Most important, the program helps keep
teens coming to the club, where they know someone is always
available to help. nearly 100 teens across our five free-standing
clubs participated in the program during 2008.
Invest in a Child Mentoring
outside the club, the pre-teen and teen years can be
filled with uncertainty and risk. these first experiences
with independence can lead to negative behaviors that
can derail a young person’s future. even the transition
within the club from the children’s area to the teen center
can be overwhelming for some members. a new grant
from the Massachusetts service alliance and a partnership
with Mass Mentoring are bringing caring volunteers into the
clubs to work with our teen population, with an emphasis
on members ages 10-14. following thorough background
screenings, volunteer mentors undergo professional training
and meet weekly with members. the focus of these meetings
is academic progress, early college-prep, building consistent
relationships with adults, and creating deeper engagement
in the clubs.

Melvin, age 15, remembers coming to the Boys & Girls Club when he
was just 6 years old and the Club was located in the basement of a
housing development. Now, sitting in the bustling teen center of the
spacious and bright Jordan Club in Chelsea, he says, “Growing up,
I thought I’d grow out of coming here, but I haven’t. It’s my choice
every day to come here. It keeps you grounded.”
The Club is more than an alternative to playing his Xbox 360 alone
in his room at home. These days, Melvin comes to the Club to work
as “Junior Staff,” helping younger kids with their homework in the
education room, and getting paid for something that he likes.
“It makes me feel better as a person to help others,” he says.
He talks about a friend who stopped coming to the Club, engaged
in criminal acts and is now facing charges. “One thing I really like
about the Club,” he says, “is they teach you to have sympathy for
other people and to reach out a hand to people who need it. There
are no strangers here.”
Some of his best memories at the Club involve challenging himself in
new ways. He says he used to be afraid of heights, but not since the
Club staff helped him master the rock climbing wall. And when he
was spending most of his time in the gym, Josh Kraft got him into
the Computer Clubhouse.
The news that Josh was leaving, he says, was bittersweet because,
“Josh joked around every day, and even if he was sad, he hid it
with a big smile. He made the Club what it is, but I know he didn’t
make the move to CEO for himself. He did it to make all of the
Clubs better.”
Like many of our members, Melvin loves the Club because it’s a place
where he feels safe and cared for, and one gets the sense that other
aspects of his life are more challenging.
Still, success seems to come easily to this very charismatic young man
who is on his school’s honor roll for Algebra and Biology, and has set
his sights on getting a business degree at UMASS Boston so that he
can open his own store selling hard-to-find sneakers.

My grandfather came from poland in 1909 with $10 in
his pocket, hoping for a better life. He joined his brothers
who were already here, and who gave him a job in their meat
market in chelsea. My father and his brothers later worked
in the business, which is still owned by the family today.
My grandmother got to know the regular customers, and
sometimes she’d notice that someone hadn’t been in to
shop that week. she understood that they were embarrassed
because they didn’t have the money to pay their tab. she
used to fill a wagon with food and take it to these families.
i grew up seeing my grandparents give back to the community.
i learned that if you’ve been fortunate enough to have some
success, you give to others.
it must have been 12 or 14 years ago that i received a call
from Josh Kraft, asking if we would donate hot dogs for
the club’s annual fourth of July barbeque. We’ve been
involved ever since. chelsea is a wonderful community,
and the Jordan club is our favorite charity here. We look
for new ways that we can contribute to make things better
for the kids and their families.
over the past few years, we’ve been bringing “the Holy grill”
to events at the yawkey club of roxbury and have provided
a barbeque every friday for campers at camp Harbor View.
those kids come from all over the city. i recently met a 14-yearold
boy who was so excited because it was the furthest he had
ever traveled from his home, even though it was just two miles
away. the boys & girls clubs gives these kids experiences that
are more meaningful and important than we can ever imagine.
on good days, my grandmother would take 25¢ out of the cash
register and put it aside. on days when they didn’t do so well,
she’d take as little as 2¢. but she did this every day until she
had saved enough money to buy a truck to make deliveries and
grow their business even more. this really made an impression
on me as a kid, and i see that the contributions we each make
are adding up to something big in chelsea and across the city.

This fall, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston launched a major
print, outdoor and online advertising campaign,
unprecedented in its 115-year history. The pro-bono
campaign, themed “In These Hands,” aims to raise
awareness of BGCB among urban teens and their
families, and to broaden the support that enables
BGCB to serve youth in need. The hands photographed
for the campaign – and featured throughout this Annual
Report – belong to Club members and were selected to
represent the diversity of BGCB’s membership.

ambitious goal of raising $100 million in five years.
though unprecedented in our history, the goal
was attainable because of exemplary campaign
management by linda Whitlock and sandy edgerley,
and our extraordinary campaign leadership. Working
individually and collaboratively, staying focused on
mission, remaining steadfast in their commitment to
success, and acting as a catalyst to inspire others, ten
remarkable individuals helped bgcb raise more than
$108 million.
because of their leadership, 8,000 others made gifts
to the campaign, including our board members who

An Unprecedented Fundraising Achievement
on June 30, 2008, boys & girls clubs of boston successfully completed our five-year comprehensive campaign,
exceeding our $100 million goal by more than $8 million.

Lifeguard Training Program.
Lifeguard certification develops

(the “organization”) as of June 30, 2008 and 2007, and the related statements of activities, functional expenses
and cash flows for the years then ended. these financial statements are the responsibility of the organization’s

We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the united states of

We are grateful to the united Way of Massachusetts bay and Merrimack Valley for its annual support of over
$1 million, which provided 6.8% of our revenues. the united Way’s continued significant financial support of
bgcb brings important recognition to the effectiveness of our strategic approach to youth development.
government funds account for 6% and membership fees for just 4.5% of bgcb operating revenue. the balance
must be raised from charitable sources.
funds functioning as endowment grew to $21 million, increasing by $4 million as the result of strategic
fundraising activities and investment performance.
increases in operating expenses were focused on youth programming and those activities that directly support
our programs. through these efforts, bgcb was able to serve nearly 14,000 youth in boston and chelsea
through consistent and effective programs.
