Fall2003A ‘First-Class’ GraduationBy Christina Cappechi, The Catholic SpiritPhotos by Dave Hrbacek, The Catholic SpiritIf you build it, they will come.Like Kevin Costner in “Field ofDreams,” the founders of HolyFamily Catholic High School inVictoria discovered that cornfieldscan yield miracles.Lifetouch photography offered graduates free proofsof their diploma conferral. Here, JoCee Ramseyposes with former President Paul Stauffacher. On May 29, the newest Catholichigh school in the archdiocese sentforth its first harvest: 31 graduatesrobed in green.“We are making history,” MollyBaker said in her valedictoryaddress. “We came to a new schoolin the middle of a cornfield in a cityI had never traveled to. A schoolwithout a past gave us the opportunityto write its future.”The event marked the first time inmore than three decades that aCatholic high school in the archdiocesegraduated an inaugural class.Holy Family faculty met the occasionwith a combination of pride andnostalgia.“I wonder if the following classeswill be as aggressive in pushing usas far as we have come,” said principalKathie Brown. “This groupknew what they wanted. They sawa more complete vision and theypushed all of us to meet goals muchfaster than we might have. I appreciatethat assertiveness.”Of course, any new venture bringsgrowing pains.“They’re pioneers,” said Jim Walker, assistant principal and scienceteacher, who gave the facultyaddress. “They’ve had to break ineverything and I think it drove thema little crazy sometimes. They didn’tcomplain much and they couldhave.”The graduates had only positivethings to say on commencementnight. Eric Fleischhacker, whotransferred from Benilde-St.Margaret’s in St. Louis Park, creditedHoly Family for turning his lifearound.“It has exceeded my expectations,”he said. Fleischhacker attributeshis improved grades to the closeattention he received from HolyImmediately following Mass, graduates gathered outsidethe gymnasium to make final preparations fortheir entrance march. Savaryn, who transferred fromWaconia High School, appreciatesthe strong faith Holy Familyinstilled in him. “Holy Familytaught me to see Christ in othersand to live every day as if it wereyour last. That’s what everyone’sabout here.”Parents seem pleased with the experience, too. John Adie ofChanhassen appreciated HolyFamily’s small size and closeness tohis Chanhassen home.“You’re more significant at a smallschool,” Adie said. He credits theschool for influencing his daughterLiz’s decision to attend a smallCatholic college. Liz, who transferredto Holy Family from theAcademy of Holy Angels in Richfield, will attend St. Mary’s in Winonanext fall.Wherever the graduates go, principalKathie Brown hopes they tacklethe future with resilience, a spiritshe says their teachers routinelymodeled.“Nothing daunts us,” Brown said.“People do 800 jobs a day here. Wetake care of the problem at hand.”...continued on next page-5 -

2002-2003 Annual Fundraising ProgramsFall2003To help offset operating expenses not covered by tuition, Holy Family Catholic High School executes a numberof annual fundraising activities. All annual initiatives are coordinated by the school’s DevelopmentOffice, and enlist the help of volunteers and families from the community to ensure their success. Below aresummaries of the three major annual fundraisers administered during the 2002-2003 fiscal year.Ready... Tee... FIRE!July 27, 2002The Ready, Tee, FIRE golf classic continues to grow each year and the 6th Annualevent was no exception! With the generous assistance of corporate and course sponsors, and the participation of a full field of 144 golfers and 25 additional dinnerguests, the event brought in over $31,000, exceeding the event’s goal of $16,000.The near-perfect weather conditions promised every golfer a few good strokes, andwith hole contests, door prizes, around-the-waist raffles, and a social dinner buffet, everyone left as a winner!Student Fundraiser: Raffle CalendarOctober-November 2002The growing student population and developing community were the primary reasonsthat Holy Family Catholic High School made the switch to a new type of studentfundraiser: raffle calendars! Supported by local businesses, calendars weresold by the students and brought in over $60,000 for HFCHS.Spirit of Fire: French CountrysideApproximately 74% (239) of students actively participated in the new fundraisingeffort, and of those students, over 66% met their individual fundraising goal.Conducted and coordinated in cooperation with the HFCHS student body, families, faculty and Development Office, the fundraiser was presented as an opportunityfor students to complete the circle of stewardship by actively participating tohelp offset the cost of their Catholic high school tuition. The third annual Spirit of Fire brought European charm to Holy FamilyCatholic High School and was a great success! Thanks to the support of theschool families and friends, as well as volunteer efforts from chairs SusanMorris and Melanie Peyton, HFCHS students, parents and friends, theFrench Countryside-themed evening left everyone with feeling of satisfaction! The event wrapped up with over $87,000 of funding support provided by the325 guests who participated in live and silent auctions, raffles, and games.Complimentary photographs were taken by Twin City Catering, printed byPROmotional Graphics, and even the table linens were for sale!Favorite highlights include the Heads/Tails Game, live auction action forthe 500 Club autographed bat, and a laid-back French feel that lent to anatmosphere perfect for the occasion.- 16 -April 5, 20032002-2003 Annual Report
