NAWGA, as it is known byits members, opens its season of tournaments on June1st. And for over 600 women in 27 clubs, the goodol’ summertime brings with it more opportunities forgolf at different courses and getting reacquainted withother NAWGA members from around the state. Withmember clubs extending from the Nevada border onthe west to the New Mexico border on the east, theNorthern Arizona Women’s GA covers hundreds ofmiles in Arizona area.AWGA North was established in 1974 and becamean independent district known as NAWGA in 1993.Their membership has increased significantly overthe years with participation at only 300 in the early90s to twice that many in 2007. “We’re a fun bunch ofwomen,” says Gayle Maisonneuve, NAWGA president.“We always do the best we can to make women feelwelcome. We encourage everyone to play.” And theyreinforce that philosophy by allowing all women to entertheir tournaments, regardless of handicaps. When awoman with a high handicap wants to enter a NAWGAtournament, she is welcome to play. The only caveat isthat her Handicap Index would be reduced to 36 makingher play to a lower handicap level. However, that is notan issue for most high handicappers and they are happyto be part of the group enjoying the camaraderie of theplayers and the excitement of the tournament.NAWGA is committed to keeping the costs low fortheir tournaments with entry fees ranging from $55to $70 depending on the site. But this nominal feeincludes more than green fees and cart. Players alsoreceive breakfast and lunch for these low fees! Andprizes are included for those who play well enough towin. All NAWGA tournaments are flighted and theypay at least one-third of the field. Almost every dollarcollected is returned to their winning participants.Where can you get a deal like that for just $5.00 a yearin membership dues! One of the popular attractions in NAWGAtournaments is their optional “closest to the hole”wager on all par 3 holes. Women ante up and try theirbest to land their tee shot in close proximity to the pin. It’s fun, it’s competitive, and it’s another opportunity towin a prize. NAWGA also sponsors Team Play eventsand contributes to Junior Golf. NAWGA leadership isalways looking for ways to make the game of golf moreenjoyable for its members.NAWGA’s 2007 Tournaments:June 1st – Seniors Championship will be played atKingman’s Cerbat Cliffs Golf Course. Since thetournament is on a Friday, many of the players willbe heading to Laughlin for some added fun overthe weekend. This is just part of the sisterhoodactivities shared by this district’s women. Lastyear’s Seniors Championship held at AntelopeHills included players with ages ranging fromNancy Burke at 51 to Dorothy Boyle at 92.July 17th – Stroke Play Championship will beplayed at Continental Golf Course in FlagstaffAugust 27th – Partners Tournament on Monday ishosted by NAWGA’s newest member club, TalkingRock, in Prescott. Kim Haddow, LPGA TeachingPro, will be giving a golf tips clinic on Sundayevening. How’s that for helping their members dotheir best before the tournament!Gayle reviewed past documents to find that manywere carbon typed copies of minutes, correspondenceand tournament flyers. “It’s hard to imagine running anorganization before the introduction of computers andthe internet,” she says. As past Tournament Directorfor two years and currently filling the position as well asholding the office of President, she knows all the workthat goes into planning an event. Vice President, SarahCox, finds the host sites for their tournaments contactingseveral courses each year to find just the right venuesfor great events. “Now we can download flyers andentry forms from the AWGA website beginning withour first event.” To download an entry form, go towww.awga.org. On the list on the left side, click onTournaments, then on District Association Tournaments, then on Northern District. To join NAWGA, you mustbe an AWGA member of a club in northern Arizona.Contact the representative at your club or Joey LynneThomas, NAWGA Treasurer, at (928) 775-3258 formembership details.Whether you live in the northern district or just goup in the summer to get out of the heat of the Valley, you can benefit from a NAWGA membership by joininga club in northern Arizona. Don’t pass up this greatopportunity. It’s a quick and easy process and I can’tthink of a better way to spend $5.00!

To the best of their knowledge, no-one in the Coyote Run WGA hadever shot in the 70s before. Reacting to this amazing score, Ardis responded, “Ithad to be those yellow shoes!”Ardis moved to Leisure World from Minnesota in 2004 and has been a memberof the WGA since that time. She started playing golf at 30 years old when she sawhow much fun her friends were having. She’s been playing golf over 30 years andholds a Handicap Index of 10.Congratulations, Ardis, on a great record breaking round at Coyote Run!AWGA NEWSLINKSis an official publication of theArizona Women’s Golf Association141 E. Marketing ManagerAWGA Women Want it AllFor several years, the larger state men’s golfassociations have been using a new “check point”system to manage the pace of play for their tournaments. It has been so successful, in some cases reducing thetime to play a tournament round to as low as 4 hours, thatit is now being used at the national level by the USGAfor their Championships. The system as it was createdand is now being used at the national level requires thattournaments use a tee time start. As we all know, wewomen tend to do shotgun starts for most tournaments, especially those that are not Championships, so thatwhen tournament play is over, there can be an awardsbanquet in which all of the players can participate.A huge part of the fun for us is the camaraderie thatgoes with sharing a meal with our opponents or fellowcompetitors after the competition. So what’s a woman to do? Settle for 5-1/2 or 6 hourrounds? Give up the awards banquet? Cut the field size?Maybe we don’t have to do any of those things. Maybewe can have it all!The Tournament and Rules Committees of theAWGA have undertaken the challenge to modify thecheck point of pace of play management system tobe used with shotgun starts. The modified systemhas been used at two tournaments this year with greatsuccess, reducing the time to play by at least one hour.At the Women’s State 4-Ball Championship May 7 &8, 128 women completed 18 holes of very challengingplay through the canyons along the Colorado River atEmerald Canyon Golf Course in times ranging from4:35 to 4:45 minutes.Congratulations to these Committee members fortaking on the challenge and to the players who areshowing such patience in accepting the new system.Further adjustments will be made to perfect the system, but overall we think it’s an ace!

WOMEN’S GOLFJUST KEEPS ON GROWING!By Kathy Wilkes, Executive Director, Southwest Section PGAFor many years a lone representative of the female gender as a PGA of AmericaExecutive Director, I often hear the remark, “Oh, you work for the men’s organization.”It is then my pleasure to explain that many of our 28,000 PGA professionals are womenand that some of the finest female professionals in our Association are right here in mySection. However, for both the professional and amateur ranks we do need to interestmore women in the game. Why wouldn’t more women get involved in golf? Women like to compete. They lovebeing outdoors, and some of the most beautiful outdoor settings are on a golf course. They enjoy the camaraderie of the game, either for business or personal reasons. Instudies gathered by the PGA of America 73 percent of women agree that golf has helpedthem develop new relationships and allowed them to network in their business. 54percent of women said that golf has helped them be more assertive in the workplaceand at home. It is a great way to spend time with family and friends - a way to connect.Or you can play simply for the health and wellness aspects of good exercise. How important is it that the PGA gets women interested in the game? Just lookto the future. Of all new players to the game last year, 63 percent were women. Wecould increase that because 42 percent of women say they don’t play golf but wouldlike to learn. Of golf’s best customers, more than 2 million are women and regardlessof income or ownership, women control most of the spending in a household. Theyare responsible for over 80 percent of the total money spent. There is no doubt that we have made substantial strides. In a three year periodwhen junior golf grew from 4 million to 5.5 million, the percentage of female juniorsgrew from 13.9 to 26.6. Eighty-two percent of all high schools now offer a competitivegolf experience for girls and there has also been an increase in women’s collegiategolf programs. In 1990, there were 145 golf programs - by 2006 there were over fourtimes that number. The PGA has developed some successful programs. A total of 476,993 womenparticipated in Play Golf America Group Lesson Programs in 2006, a 62 percentincrease over the previous year. Women’s Golf Week and Take Your Daughter to theCourse Week, programs both targeted to bring females into the game, experiencedrecord years with consumer participation increases of 158 percent and 16 percentrespectively. A record number of women also participated in PGA Free Lesson Month.A total of 45,673 women took free lessons in 2006, a 38 percent increase over the totalnumber of women in 2005.Innovative ideas are needed. Locally, the AWGA has developed the AmbassadorProgram, which pairs experienced women golfers with PGA Teaching Professionalsto remove the intimidation factor of learning the game. Mentoring from members ofthe AWGA provides a comfortable environment for area women to learn the game ofgolf. Nationally, the PGA will launch a “Get Into Golf” program that enables PGAprofessionals to interact with beginning women golfers, providing an introduction to thegame of golf and facility orientation that will promote networking and participation. The AWGA website makes the statement “A Woman’s Place is on the Golf Course.”We, at the PGA, want to help make that ring true for as many women as possible.COURSE RATINGSThe following courses have been re-rated orhave made changes since the 2007 AWGA ClubDirectory was printed. To help develop such a skill, consider the following points.1. Speed: Controlling the speed of your putt is vitally important. The quicker the ball is rolling, theless the ball will break. The optimum pace to hit a putt is one that would take the ball 15 inches pastthe hole. This speed ensures that the ball holds its line.2. True Down Slope Direction: The momentum of the stroke makes the ball roll along a straight lineinitially (we have stated the relationship between speed and break). However, as the ball gets closer tothe hole the ball begins to lose its speed. As it loses its speed the ball will start to look for and go downthe true downslope of the green as gravity starts to take over. Therefore make sure you are aware of yoursurroundings and the directions of where the low points of the slopes on and around the greens are.

MAKING A DIFFERENCEThe AWGA is governed by an elected ExecutiveBoard of 9 members who reside in all areas of the state. In order to ensure that those elected to do the importantwork of directing the Association are very well versedin the purpose and operation of the AWGA, nominatingprocedures include looking first to the workingcommittees of the Association to select candidates. This process begins in July. Each Committee Chair willsubmit recommendations to the Nominating Committeewho will then select the best qualified candidates forelection and present you, the members, with a ballot. So why should YOU care? Because the long termhealth of women’s golf in Arizona depends on it! Theright people doing the right things makes all thedifference.
