The Arizona Women’s Golf Association conducted it’s 78th Annual meeting this past January at the
Phoenix Country Club with 165 ladies and gentlemen present. Representing approximately 100 of the
of the outgoing Board of Directors, welcome the incoming Board of Directors, and celebrate the successes
of the association’s many volunteers and tournament players throughout the year of 2002.
As always, the Phoenix Country Club provided an excellent venue for the meeting and celebration.
Thank you to all our members who attended to honor our award winners and Board of Directors.
CONGRATULATIONS!
The AWGA honored the following three individuals at the 2003 Annual Meeting, January 21, 2003 at Phoenix Country Club:
Vash Matlon - Life-Time Achievement Award, Barbara Zimmermann - Volunteer of the Year, and Thuhashini Selvaratnam - 2002
Player of the Year. Congratulations to all three of the honorees!
Vash Matlon – Life Time Achievement Award
As most women of her generation will tell
you, female athletes were a non-entity in the
30’s and 40’s. During her college years at the
University of Minnesota, although the school
offered no golf program for women, the golf
coach used Vash, along with classmate Patty
Berg, as demonstrators at clinics for the men’s
golf teams. Vash graduated from the University
of Minnesota in 1940, and later earned a
Masters Degree in Psychology. Vash’s playing
career during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s
included finishing 2 nd in the Minnesota State
Publinks Championship, progressing to match
play in the 1952 US Women’s Amateur, and
finishing 3 rd in the 1954 Swiss National Amateur Championship. Ms. Matlon
turned professional in 1963, and was one of the first two women teaching
professionals to be certified by the LPGA National Golf School for women.
She has presented golf seminars on television, is the author of a textbook on
high school golf instruction, and developed one of the first women’s golf
programs in the country at Carleton College in Minnesota.
After regaining her amateur status in the late 80’s, Vash moved to Arizona
to retire. She has remained very active in the game, both as a player in
AWGA tournaments, winning the Masters Division (80 + ) of the State
Senior’s Championship 5 years running. Vash is also an officer in her local
and regional associations. She has dedicated the remaining years of her life
to being a champion for junior golf programs in northern Arizona.
We commend you, Vash, for your undying enthusiasm and continued
commitment to furthering the cause of women’s golf.
2002
Volunteer
of the
Year
When selecting
the Volunteer of the
Year, the committee
considers eight different
criteria: length of service, commitment, time
given, trustworthiness, contribution, leadership,
cooperation and ownership of responsibility.
Although the AWGA has many volunteers who rate
very high in all of these areas, Barbara
Zimmermann stood out from all the rest this year.
Barbara has been an active volunteer on the
AWGA Course Rating Committee for 17 years,
since 1985, at the very inception of the USGA
Course Rating System. In 1995, Barbara was
appointed Team Captain in the Southern Region
and has worked tirelessly on behalf of the AWGA
ever since, training and managing her team of a
dozen course raters in southern Arizona. Barbara’s
team was responsible for the completion of 18
course ratings in 2002, a commitment on her part
of over 200 hours.
Barbara’s commitment to supporting the
Arizona Women’s Golf Association is truly
appreciated for the service it allows us to provide
to our membership and all women who play golf
in our state. Congratulations Barbara, and thank
you for your continued leadership and
contributions.

Thank You Note From Evelyn Davis
Allowing me to be part of the ceremony
was a very gracious and thoughtful thing for
you to do. You are such a nice group of ladies.
I have one story I want to share. When I
was elected to the board of Yuma Golf &
Country Club, the president asked me which
committee I was interested in chairing. I knew
that the House Committee works mostly with
food and the menu. The Social Committee
plans the parties and all special events. All
my life I have done typical woman things. As
a golfer, I wanted to chair the Greens and Golf
Committee. Women need to have a voice in
how fast the greens should run, what trees
need trimming, which tournaments should be
allowed, real golf stuff. I knew this was
thought of as men’s territory, but our president
agreed that it was time to let a woman do it
and that I could do that job.
I have that position now and I am trying
my best to walk the thin line between “b____”
and “gutsy grandma”. I do think being older
helps.
I know more ladies will follow and that
women will continue to gain more and more
active roles in “the real golf stuff”.
Once again thank you and God Bless.
March is Junior Girls Golf Month in Arizona
It is a fact that individuals who are introduced to golf
at a young age are many times more likely to play as adults
than are those who do not play as children. It is important
to the future of women in golf that our numbers continue
to grow as an overall percentage of all golfers. One of the
programs that the AWGA facilitates, through your
individual and club donations, and through your AWGA
membership fees is our Junior Girls Golf Fund. For many years, the Junior
Girls Golf Fund has sponsored the Arizona team to the Girls Junior Americas
Cup Matches (which Arizona will host in 2006), and has supported the
Junior Golf Association of Arizona and its fine competitive program along
with the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf Club and its developmental program.
There are many other excellent junior golf programs available to young
girls in Arizona which are worthy of our support. In order to continue to
enhance our support of girls’ junior golf, we are expanding and coordinating
our fund raising activities throughout the state. Part of the plan is to coordinate
a fund-raiser with one of our very popular team tournaments, the Partners
Tournament, which this year is being hosted by Prescott Lakes Golf Club in
Prescott. Look for more information on this event in the near future.
Here’s how you can help:
• Declare March “Junior Girls Golf Month” at your club.
• During the month of March, conduct special fund-raising contests on your play days.
• Continue your fund-raising activities throughout the year. You will be amazed at
how much money you can raise a few cents at a time.
• Submit your donation through the AWGA to be entered in a contest for the club
making the largest donation in the calendar year 2003. Prizes to be announced.
• When you submit your donation, please specify how you wish your donation
applied (Visit the AWGA Web page, click “News” for a list of approved programs).
The success of our goals for junior girls’ golf and the future of girls’ golf
programs in Arizona depends on your support and generosity. Your support
of the AWGA Junior Girls Golf fund is truly appreciated.
the charity events as we are made aware of them.
National Championship, we can now publicize it on our website.
