This year the Board <strong>of</strong>Advisors <strong>of</strong> the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Archive</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong>is pleased to announce the recognition <strong>of</strong> two f<strong>in</strong>alist projectswith Commendations; un-hous<strong>in</strong>g performance : The Heart <strong>of</strong>PQ by Dorrita Hannah <strong>of</strong> Well<strong>in</strong>gton, New Zealand and Sonicloth©by Janet Stoyel <strong>of</strong> Sheldon, United K<strong>in</strong>gdom.The Commendation recognized un-hous<strong>in</strong>g performance : TheHeart <strong>of</strong> PQ, “an exhibition/event on the Senses <strong>in</strong> Performance,”as an important project that extends the reach <strong>of</strong>women <strong>in</strong> architecture. The work challenges the notion <strong>of</strong>boundaries <strong>in</strong> architecture related to performance. Five ma<strong>in</strong>sections constructed as towers def<strong>in</strong>e a landscape for thesenses with a tower devoted to each - taste, touch, sight, sound,and smell, and draw performance <strong>in</strong>to relationship with thebody, rituals, and constructed material. Constructed at thePrague Quadrennial (PQ), artists collaborated dur<strong>in</strong>g twoweeks<strong>of</strong> construction followed by two weeks <strong>of</strong> performance<strong>in</strong>habitation with 50 artists from around the world.The Commendation recognized Sonicloth© as an importantdevelopment for textiles <strong>in</strong> architecture with the development <strong>of</strong>this patented product. The Jury found special <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> thesusta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g relationship <strong>of</strong> this material development and uses toenhance exist<strong>in</strong>g material manufactur<strong>in</strong>g, s<strong>in</strong>ce the researchwork <strong>in</strong>volved construct<strong>in</strong>g a design team with an old establishedfamily concern noted for precision weav<strong>in</strong>g.
