This year the Board ofAdvisors of the International Archive of Women in Architectureis pleased to announce the recognition of two finalist projectswith Commendations; un-housing performance : The Heart ofPQ by Dorrita Hannah of Wellington, New Zealand and Sonicloth©by Janet Stoyel of Sheldon, United Kingdom.The Commendation recognized un-housing performance : TheHeart of PQ, “an exhibition/event on the Senses in Performance,”as an important project that extends the reach ofwomen in architecture. The work challenges the notion ofboundaries in architecture related to performance. Five mainsections constructed as towers define a landscape for thesenses with a tower devoted to each - taste, touch, sight, sound,and smell, and draw performance into relationship with thebody, rituals, and constructed material. Constructed at thePrague Quadrennial (PQ), artists collaborated during twoweeksof construction followed by two weeks of performanceinhabitation with 50 artists from around the world.The Commendation recognized Sonicloth© as an importantdevelopment for textiles in architecture with the development ofthis patented product. The Jury found special interest in thesustaining relationship of this material development and uses toenhance existing material manufacturing, since the researchwork involved constructing a design team with an old establishedfamily concern noted for precision weaving.
