We returned tothe starting point and took a careful look at the forklift itself from every aspect.The 8 Series stands ready to bring out the true potential in all owners and operators.Noise Level TestingElectronic Component TestingIncline TestingHisao NagataChief Engineer of the 8 Series,Toyota Material Handling CompanyDuring the development of the 8 Series wecombined our ongoing quality improvementactivities with more than 4,500 customersurveys and this helped us to fully recognizewhat the current forklift customer needs were,and what those needs would be in the future.The results lead us to conclude that the bestmethod for satisfying customer needs was to:“investigate the essence of what makes a goodforklift by basing our design on the 7 Seriesand by further infusing Toyota’s strengths intothat design.In continuing our evolution from the 7 Series,we aimed for advances in the areas of safety,ergonomics, cost of ownership andenvironmental considerations.In the field of safety we have added a travelingcontrol option in addition to the existingSystem of Active Stability (SAS) and OperatorPresence Sensing (OPS) features. We havebeen able to realize this functionality byharmonizing the SAS technology with theoptional electronic fuel injection (EFI) systemthat has been employed in the present design.This field of ergonomics is inseparably linkedto the concept of work efficiency. The ability ofthe operator to work in comfort is an extremelyimportant factor in dealing with the high speedof the present-day logistics business. Bypaying close attention to all sizes, shapes andlayouts of the operator compartment, we havebeen able to realize significant improvements invisibility and operator operating space.Through a concerted approach to reducingnoise and vibration, we have created a forkliftthat has significantly reduced noise andvibration levels, as well as minimizing operatorfatigue.Cost of ownership is closely connected with theissue of reliability.As forklifts are a capital good, breakdowns thatcan stop customer productivity are a worstcase scenario. By focusing on the areas ofenhancing reliability, reducing downtimethrough making maintenance easier toperform, and extending maintenance periods,we have developed a forklifts series that is ableto make the greatest contribution to customerprofitability.Environmental factors are central to ourthinking. Customers have also expressed aconcern for the environment, a concern that weshare. We have addressed this by using amulti-pronged approach. In the manufacturingprocess, we reduced and eliminated the use ofmaterials that are environmentally sensitive.We have also developed a forklift with top-classemissions performance. This will reduce theoutput of undesirable substances over thelifetime of the truck, while simultaneouslycreating a cleaner work environment.While this new design represents an evolutionfrom the 7 Series, the development team beganby re-evaluating the designs from scratch.They covered the smallest details – includingeach screw used in the forklift’s construction –to ensure the development of best-of-breedforklift units that truly satisfy customer needs.I believe we have created a series of forkliftsthat further enhance the reputation that Toyotahas established over the years.Hisao NagataFeatures and equipment mayvary depending on market.The development and design of the 8 Series was done at the Toyota TakahamaPlant in Aichi, Japan. During the development stage, state-of-the-art technologywas used to get a better understanding of operator movement during forkliftoperation.
