10A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 10, 2011SPORTSBy RICHARD GREENERay Cortez did not getoff to the start he wantedSaturday at the Class 3ARegion VI meet at DecaturHigh School, missing hisfirst squat.But the Decatur juniordidn’t take long to reboundon his way to winning thesuper heavyweight class.Cortez lifted 1,540 poundsto take the division by 90pounds and earn a spot atthe March 26 state meet inAbilene.Making his regional debut,Cortez was battlingnerves.“All week I had butterflies,”he said. “I was reallynervous and spent thewhole week really focusingon this.”Decatur coach Heath Tulloussaid Cortez’ uneasinesswas evident.“He was real nervous withit being his first regionalmeet,” he said. “He won iteasily just being naturallystrong. We were makinghim do a lot of weight to seewhat he can do.”Cortez received a red lighton his first squat for not goingdown far enough. He recoveredto squat 575.“That made me determinedto get my next lift,”Cortez said.He followed with a 380-pound bench press. Cortezclosed the meet by pullingup 585 pounds.With the regional title inhand, Cortez hopes to addmore hardware at state andset a personal best.“I think I can do moreand get to 1,600 pounds,” hesaid.He will be joined at stateby three other Decatur lifters— Dillan Brown, ZachRamirez and Alejandro Beltran.Ramirez finished second in the 114-pound class, lifting 750. Hesquatted 295, benched 160 and pulled 295 on deadlift.POWERLIFTINGCortez powers his way to statePOWERLIFTINGRedman,Cunninghamadvance to stateAlvord’s Colton Redman won the regional poweriftingmeet Saturday in Ponder, setting two regionlrecords and qualifying for the state meet.He was joined by Jackson Cunningham of Paraiseas a state qualifier from <strong>Wise</strong> <strong>County</strong> in theA ranks, while two others, Tyler Cobb of Paradisend Trevor Richard of Chico, qualified as state alernates.The state meet is March 26 in Abilene.Redman won the 165-pound class with a recordquat of 525 pounds and a record 515 pounds ineadlift on his way to a 1,320 total, to win his diviionby 100 pounds.Cunningham put up a 1,590 total in the 275-ound class with a 635-pound squat, 430-poundench press and 525-pound dead lift.Cobb was third in the 198 class with lifts of 445,70 and 470 pounds.Richard benched 140 pounds, squatted 245 andeadlifted 300 for a 685 total and third place in the14-pound class.Chico teammate Troy Johnson placed fifth in the14 class with a 650 total.In the 148-pound class, Chico’s Victor Velasquezifted 1,070 pounds and also placed fifth.Also from Alvord, Jesse Brown was 10th in the81-pound class with a 990-pound total.In the 148 class, Thomas Trice of Alvord placed0th with lifts totaling 900 pounds.Alvord coach Lane Wilson noted that Redmanroke his own record in the deadlift.Chico coach Mike McAllister said this was therst time for Chico to qualify a lifter for the stateeet.<strong>Messenger</strong> photos by Joe DutyPOWER UP — A handful of powerlifters from Decatur and Bridgeport competed in the Class 3A RegionVI meet at Decatur High School Saturday for bids to the March 26 state meet. Kasey Wages led theway with three hits and two stolen bases.Brooke Bennett got the win on themound.The Sissies will play at Olney Friday,March 11.BASEBALLBulls go 3-2in tourneyThe Bridgeport Bulls earned threewins and suffered a pair of losses at theLittle Elm Tournament over the weekend.In the first game against Celina, aKevin Coan home run in the third inningfacilitated an 11-4 win over theBobcats.Omar Martinez earned the win on themound, striking out five and walkingone in six innings.Later that day, the Bulls cruised to a13-1 win against Thomas Jefferson.Coan, who went three-for-three, anddoubles by Alex Samples and Martinezled Bridgeport at the plate.Due to the 10-run mercy rule, thegame was called in the third inning.Damian Delgado threw 40 pitcheswith no walks and one strikeout.“Damian had a really good outing afterhaving a difficult time pitching inthe North Texas Tournament last weekend,”coach Ted Leps said.The Bulls then dropped a pair of onepointgames to Frisco Liberty and Saginaw.A grand slam by Cody Henson in theseventh inning tied the game againstLiberty, but it was not enough as theRedhawks squeezed by with a 9-8 win.Samples and Reese Read had multiple-hitgames with Samples goingthree-for-five with two doubles.He pitched seven innings before Readcame into relief in the eighth inning.Against Saginaw, three miscues andstrong pitching were enough for theBulls to drop a 5-4 loss.“Saginaw did a good job of keepingour bottom part of the order off the basepaths,” Leps said.Henson led the Bulls at the plate withtwo RBIs.Bridgeport then retaliated with a 19-0win over Frisco Legacy Christian.Led by Samples, Coan, Martinez andBranon Huff, the Bulls blasted 15 hitsagainst the Eagles.On the mound, Reed earned the win,striking out 10 with no walks.“We played really well in the LittleElm Tournament,” Leps said. “There area lot of things that we still need to workon, but I am happy with the progress ofour younger players at this point (in)the season.”After taking on Fort Worth ChristianTuesday, the Bulls will participate in theSaginaw Tournament this weekend.
