It was like comingout with cinderblocks strappedto your legs. The stress they put onme was terrible.”With the congressional nomination,Murray awaits official acceptancein the academy. He anticipatesto be notified of a decision bythe end of this month.“Once you have the nomination,it’s pretty sure you’ll get in (to theacademy),” he said. “Unless theydig up some terrible dirt.”The Decatur High School seniorknew early on that he wanted topursue service in the military.People he grew up around influencedhis decision to apply to anacademy.“I grew up on a small island (inFlorida) in a community of seniorcitizens,” he said. “I got to sit andlisten to war stories of retired vetsgrowing up. He has also been involvedwith People to People StudentAmbassadors. He feels these activities, combinedwith a heavy homework loadand constant workouts, have preparedhim for the naval academy.“They really look at academicsand athletics,” he said. “You don’thave to be a world-class athlete toget in, but you do have to be a verygood athlete to some extent.“You have to have a lot of thingsas far as leadership. WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 10, 20115AOPINIONOUR VIEWSPiano connects youthful memories with hope for futureBy JULIE NEALSeven guys, 120 miles and several thankyou’s later, I have a beautiful, dark-woodpiano nestled in the corner of my livingroom.Made in the 1950s, it is boxy with ayellow tinge on the keys. It took the placeof an electric piano that was an impulsepurchase my junior year of college. With itslightweight keys and useless pedal, I decidedto get rid of my faithful friend whenmy old clarinet teacher posted on Facebookshe was looking to get rid of her piano.I sat down at the piano late Sunday nightwith a wobbly kitchen stool taking theplace of a piano bench. My fingers touchedthe keys as my feet pumped thepedal to old familiar pieces riddledwith brilliant arpeggios. The techniques and dynamics ofplaying came rushing back to melike re-learning how to ride a bike.It felt natural. As a future parent, hopefully, Ioften evaluate how I was raisedand decide which parts to repeatwith my children and what tochange. The best favor my motherdid for me was to sign me up forpiano lessons.Every Wednesday from first throughsixth grade, I would go to Mrs. Carpenter’shouse with my grandmother and sister. After “Jeopardy” was over, Mrs.Carpenter would transform anhour into a lesson of music appreciationthrough the piano.Unlike other instruments, thepiano has it all. It doesn’t needother instruments to play with itto make a beautiful melody. After six years of piano lessons,I gave them up to play the clarinetfor seven years. I loved playing,NEAL but something always drew meback to the piano. As I grew older,I realized my skill was one not many possessed.Playing the piano has become a lost art, making me determined to ensure it doesn’tget lost before my children have a chanceto experience it.I played the piano periodically throughoutcollege, hence my impulse buy from aperson on Craigslist. My new piano marks a milestone for me.It is my first real piano.I get to come home from work and sitdown on the familiar stool while smellingthe varnish spread across my new piano. Iget to play a soft, sweet song or pound thekeys into a frustrated flurry of keys andnotes.Hopefully, with practice, I can become abetter pianist not only for my enjoyment, but for the sake of our neighbors, too.YOUR VIEWSLight wouldprevent accidentsHow many accidents/fatalities have to happent the intersection of Texas 114 and Farm Road 51efore a traffic signal is installed? They put one on.S. 380 at the Devon office, which has not been nears dangerous.Yes, a light would cause a few-minute delay inravelers’ time, but it sure makes sense to me to avoidny more serious or fatal accidents there.Nancy KimbroBridgeportGratefulfor cleanupI wrote not too long ago about the sight our visitorsee as they come into Bridgeport from the east sidef town – right past the Welcome to Bridgeport sign.here was a mess of old trailer houses, and I thoughthey should be cleaned up.To my delight, they have been removed, and it isooking so much better. Now we can be proud of whatur visitors see as they enter our city.Thank you.Ellen WhitleyBridgeportOTHER VIEWSA balanced approach to balancing the state budgetBy F. SCOTT MCCOWNMaybe you’ve heard that our state is short of moneybecause of the recession. Perhaps you think the state canjust cut spending or that the problem doesn’t affect you.Well think again. Our state isn’t just a little short of money. Merely tomaintain critical public services, at their current levels, costs at least $27 billion more than we have. In otherwords, we only have three-fourths of the money we need.If you try to fill this big of a hole with only cuts in spending, you cut into the state’s muscle and bone.Instead, Texas needs a balanced approach. That meansthat instead of only cuts in spending, we need to use thestate’s Rainy Day Fund while adopting some modest newstate revenue measures.Unfortunately, legislators so far have proposed nothingbut cuts. They would rather fire teachers, crowd classrooms, and deny financial aid to all new applicants at communitycolleges and state universities.Legislators would even make deep cuts to health carefor children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Theywould reduce payments to doctors, hospitals and nursinghomes – compromising care and forcing local taxes andprivate health insurance premiums to go up.The proposed state budget doesn’t just shortchange educationand hurt folks who can’t help themselves, such asthe elderly in nursing homes or abused children in fostercare. It also seriously undermines the Texas economy – todayand far into the future. For one thing, the proposed budget would substantiallyincrease unemployment, and not just in the public sector.Cuts this big send a wave of job loss throughout the economy,as the state cancels contracts and reduces paymentsto people with whom it does business. Before long, folkswho think they have no connection to state governmentare laid off because all of the other newly unemployed arebuying fewer goods and services. We’re talking about a lot of jobs here.Dr. Ray Perryman, a renowned Texaseconomist, estimates that every jobdirectly lost as a result of state budgetreductions takes with it roughly 1.5more jobs. The proposed state budget wouldeliminate more than 9,200 state jobsright off the top. Then the chain reactionstarts. Reduced state support toschool districts, community colleges andMCCOWNstate universities means they, too, throwpeople out of work.School districts alone would lay off as many as 100,000people, one of the state’s leading school finance expertscalculates. Using the Perryman formula, this meansthat merely from reduced spending on public education,250,000 Texans would be in the unemployment line. That’s enough to push the state’s jobless rate up to over10 percent (it’s 8.3 percent now). And that’s without evenfiguring in jobs lost in higher education or health and humanservices. The proposed cuts-only budget doesn’t just hurt us today, though. It also fails to create opportunity for tomorrow. When we refuse to raise the money needed for things likepublic education and higher education, we undermineeconomic growth and our future as a great state. If the legislature takes a balanced approach, though, wecan both avoid an economic disaster today and promoteeconomic growth tomorrow. The state’s Rainy Day Fund can cover about a third ofthe shortfall. Some of the rest can come from new revenue, for example, increasing the cigarette tax by a buck a pack.Regardless of what politicians say, raising a little newrevenue is vastly preferable to deep cuts in education orhealth and human services.Of course, politicians say we have to keep taxes low toattract business. But, businesses care about more thanjust taxes. They need an educated workforce and a goodtransportation system, for example – and Texas is proposingspending cuts so deep that the state’s ability to providethese sorts of economic building blocks would be severelycompromised.Besides, Texas businesses already pay lower taxes thanin almost any other state, so low that there’s ample roomfor increases without endangering our competitive advantage. In the end, our elected officials will do what Texans saythey want done. In the last several months, lawmakershave heard mostly from those who offer the bromide thatwe can balance our budget with cuts alone. But this isone bromide that will kill us. It’s time for the rest of us tomake our voices heard. We need to demand a balanced approach.!McCown is executive director of the Center for PublicPolicy Priorities.DECATUR VETERINARY CLINIC$5 Canine and FelineRabies VaccinationMarch 1-31 • No Appointment NecessaryMon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. • Saturdays, 8 a.m.-11 a.m.2101 S. Although these symptoms resemblethose associated with a urinary tract infection, urine culturesare usually bacteria-free and antibiotics are not effective. Thecause of interstitial cystitis, which is far more common amongwomen than among men, may be traced to an interruption insignals sent through the pelvic nerves that tell the brain that thebladder is full and it is time to urinate. Other factors (such as adefect in the protective lining of the bladder) may also play arole. The serious disruption in the lives of those affected shouldlead them to seek diagnosis and treatment. If you have symptoms of interstitial cystitis or another urinary orbladder condition, contact your doctor as soon as possible for adiagnosis and treatment options. 6 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 10, 2011BooksDon’t overlook university press booksBy KRISTEN TRIBEAnything addressed to the“book editor” lands on mydesk.Although that’s not mytitle, it’s a topic I’ve claimedas my own here at the Messenger. Most of the book mail isess than interesting, buthursday’s mail rendered areat — a Texas Tech UniversityPress catalog.University presses traditionallypublish works withintellectual or creative merit. They also often focus onregional history and culture, whereas a commercial housepublishes books for a popularaudience and those thatare pegged to make money.I think university pressbooks are often overlookedby the general reader becausethey’re assumed tobe too scholarly or simply atextbook.I always assumed thesame thing until I worked inthe marketing departmentfor the Texas A&M UniversityPress while in college. Iwas surprised to find bookson a wide variety of topicsand on subjects that were ofinterest to me.Readers are selling themselvesshort by automaticallystriking university pressbooks from their lists. As I flipped through theTech catalog last week, I immediatelyfound a few booksI wanted to read, including“Will Rogers: A PoliticalLife” by Richard D. White Jr.,which is about, you guessedBookendsit, Will Rogers.Another bookthat caught my attentionwas “TheNotorious Dr. Flippin:Abortion andConsequence inthe Early TwentiethCentury” byJamie Q. Tallman. The catalog entrysaid Dr. CharlesFlippin was a “godsend”in Kansasand Nebraska becauseof “his skillas a physician and willingnessto help anyone, regardlessof race or social class” inthe early 1900s.But Flippin’s reputationwas scarred when peoplediscovered the AfricanAmerican physician alsoperformed abortions. Flippinavoided “conviction inseveral trials until finallypleading guilty in 1924.”I also came across “OnePage at a Time: On a WritingLife” by Pat Carr. I devourthese books becauseI’m always curious abouthow others have made theirway through a career in thewritten word. While I worked at theA&M press, I was also takinga publishing class fromthe press director. Eventhough my job primarily entailedmailing catalogs andhandling other correspondence,I felt like the classand job were good exposureto the publishing industry. The A&M press is alsoa consortium press, whichmeans they sell and distributebooks for otherpresses, too, includingthe TexasChristian UniversityPress, TexasReview Press,Texas State HistoricalAssociationPress, SouthernMethodistUniversity Press,State House Pressand the Universityof North TexasPress.Between all ofthese houses, several bookscaught my eye even thoughmy schedule didn’t allowfor much “extracurricular”reading outside of what wasrequired for my classes. One of great interest to mewas “Whatever Happened toJacy Farrow?” by Ceil Cleveland, published by the UNTPress. It is believed thatCleveland was the model forthe character Jacy Farrowin Larry McMurtry’s “TheLast Picture Show,” and inher memoir, she describeswhat it was like as a girl togrow up during this era inArcher City.Cleveland has taught atseveral universities and currentlyserves as vice presidentfor university affairs ofthe State University of NewYork at Stony Brook.I’m happy to report thather book is still availablefrom the A&M Press, andnow that I have the means, and more reading time, Ithink I’ll order it.I encourage everyone togive university press booksa try. You might be surprisedwhat you find ontheir shelves.!Kristen Tribe is assistanteditor at the Wise CountyMessenger. 2 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 10, 2011By NEIL SPERRYDear Neil: A friend haswo gardenias in Southexas. They are always yelow. They’re morehan 30 years old,ut they do bloom.hey were fertilzedonce with azaea/gardenia/caelliafood. Whathould be done toelp them? That sounds likeron deficiency. If they were myplants, I’d trimand reshape themthis winter, even ifit cost me the spring’s flowers.I would apply a highnitrogenfertilizer every sixto eight weeks until latesummer, and I’d add ironaround them monthly startingin April. (Keep iron productsoff concrete, brick andother surfaces that could bestained.)Dear Neil: I bought a sixfootpotted bur oak tree threeyears ago. It has grown taller, but it hasn’t branched. Thefew limbs that it does haveare now hanging downward(see photo). Should I top it,simply wait on it, or take itout?Your photo shows that it’svery happy, growing vigorously. That kind of columnarnew growth isn’t uncommonfor young bur oaks.It probably wouldn’t hurtto come down 12 to 16 inchesOUTDOORIron deficiencymight be cause ofyellowing gardeniasGardener’sMailbagfrom the top of the tree andremove its top growth justabove a side shoot that coulddevelop into a major branch. However, if you never didthat at all, the treewould probablystill turn out to behandsome.E v e n t u a l l y,you’ll want toremove one ortwo of the lowestbranches. They’retoo close to theground. But, youneed to leave themthere for the nextcouple of yearsto help the tree’strunk thicken. You’re goingto be just fine.Dear Neil: You mentionthe need for soil tests. Wherecan I have this done? Howdo I collect samples from alarge yard? Some nurseries offer soiltests to help their customersget ready for spring gardening. However, the easiestway may be simply to workthrough your local office ofthe Texas AgriLife ExtensionService. They have astate-of-the-art soil-testinglaboratory at College Station.Instructions on how youshould collect small, randomsamples from your landscapeand garden will comewith the mailing materials.I normally collect a coupleContinued on page 14SUDOKU SOLUTIONSCROSSWORD SOLUTIONDELIVERYWILL BE:FISH DAYfor Pond & Lake StockingTuesday, March 15 • 4 to 5 p.m.at Fletcher Feed, DecaturWednesday, March 16 • 8 to 9 a.m.at Alvord Farm Supply, AlvordThe Fish Truck by David Abney 870-697-3550www.fishstocker.comCOST: $3200 (Financial Assistance available)LOCATION: Currently offering Truck Driving at WCWC.For dates and times oradditional informationcontact Tiffany Thrasherat 817-598-8891.Senior CareHEALTH & REHABILITATION CENTERBRIDGEPORT / DECATURHomewardBound2 out of 3 Rehab Patientsreturn home in less then 30 daysSenior Care is here to meet all your needs: Short TermRehabilitation, Skilled Nursing Services,or Long Term Care.Bridgeport2108 15th StreetBridgeport, Texas 76426940-683-5023“Experience the Difference”Decatur701 West Bennett RoadDecatur, Texas 76234940-626-2800

Wouldn’t our light intensities, umidity, temperatures matter? Wouldooks written elsewhere work in Texas?I’m not aware of any reference on flowringor foliar houseplants that is thatpecific. I’ve never felt the need to havenformation that was that detailed. Youlunge in with the best types, and youventure into the unknowns a few at atime. Some do well. Others do not.Honestly, in my decades of answeringplant questions, I’ve found that peoplemake much more basic mistakes thanall that. They forget to water, or theywater way too often. They’re the dedicated plant peoplewho live and garden in a locale. They’llalso be the most likely sources of locallyuseful plants and products. They canalso order anything in for you.Look for a Texas Certified or MasterCertified Nursery Professional for themost reliable advice. As to the “weedand-feedproducts,” I’m not an advocate.I think those two procedures needto be done separately. It’s too early to feed now, but it willbe too late for pre-emergent when thefertilizing time comes.Dear Neil: I’ve been told that it’sharmful to plant live oaks near redoaks. Is that true? I have live oaks, evaluate, analyze, critiqueand comprehend what theyread using web cams. The grant was authored byStephanie Espinosa, PatriceBrake, Penny Bowles, GenieCherry, Barbara Reyes,Maria Ottman, Tonya Mohr,Brenda Franks, CrystalCousins, Erin Stark, JamieGallas and Sherry Lesinski.Students in Elyse Pennington’sspecial education classwere awarded $1,726.10 for“Wii Move to Learn” to teachstudents how to participatein moderate to vigoroushealth-related physical activitiesusing the Wii gamingsystem.Megan Fulbright, Amy Davisand Tonya Taylor helpedwrite the grant. At Northwest High School,Kim Garrett, Casey Hemlick,Elizabeth Sink and JoshWithers received a $4,994“Get Your Science To Go”grant sponsored by DevonEnergy Corporation. Thegrant funds Vernier Lab-Quest interface units andprobware relevant to datacollection for chemistry, biologyand physics. The hand-held devices allowscience students to recordtheir findings electronicallyand download themfor data analysis to imbedcharts and graphs into theirlab reports.A $1,250 grant for “Reflections:Voices of Northwest,”written by Betty Roberts, will fund the printing of aliterary magazine that featuresoriginal student workin writing, photography andart work.and I’d like a couple of red oaks.Absolutely not true! The two speciesgrow in close and happy proximity allover big bands of Texas. Plant the redoaks. Just be sure they have ampleroom to develop (40 feet or more fromother trees).Dear Neil: Why would my 18-yearoldnandinas not have any berries? Theplants have thrived, but never any berries.Suggestions? You either have a type like Gulfstream,Moonbay or dwarf types (noneof which bears fruit), or you have themin enough shade that they’re not floweringin the spring. The only advice Ican offer is to enjoy them for their foliageand great winter color.!Have a question you’d like Neil toconsider?
