Its varietyof habitats and high level of biodiversity attract theinterest of scientists and researchers from academia, andcould someday lead to a medical discovery. Today, mosthouseholds in the periphery of Virunga rely on woodor charcoal to meet their energy needs, which has ledto deforestation and habitat destruction in the park. IfVirunga’s forests are properly maintained they could bea source of revenue from carbon sequestration credits.
