TROUBLE ON THE HORIZONSince becoming Africa’s first national park in 1925, thesavannas, lakes and mountains <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virunga</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Park</strong>have seen more than their share <strong>of</strong> trouble. Even throughtimes <strong>of</strong> armed conflict, the park has survived. But now<strong>Virunga</strong> itself is under attack. Oil concessions covering85 per cent <strong>of</strong> its territory have been designated, andexploration companies are on its doorstep. With oil comerisks from pollution and destabilization, which coulddestroy this extraordinary place forever.
