For an explanation of scoring, visit the USDAAInformation Booth or visit www.usdaa.com.Dog and handler teams must execute split-second precision as theynegotiate some of the world’s most challenging agility courses in Kentucky.Tournament WatchUSDAA Tournaments are divided into twodivisions— the Championship Series and thePerformance Series. Each competitor cancompete in only one tournament series. The standards for competition in theChampionship Series are the highest seen ininternational competition around the worldrequiring a balance of physical conditioningand top handling strategies. The Performance Series utilizes standardsthat offer lower jumping and scaling heights, and by placing less emphasis on the rigors ofobstacle performance, places more focus onhandling strategy in the outcome. In both tournament series, competitors’ dogsmust jump in one of four height divisions:Championship SERIES12”, 16”, 22” or 26”—no dog may jump lowerthan its shoulder heightPerformance Series8”, 12”, 16” or 22”—dogs may jumpone category lower than their shoulder heightEach competitor has qualified in local, regionalor national qualifying events throughout thepast year. There is no distinction by breed, thus including“mixed” or “crossbreeds”.4 CY N O S P O R T WORLD G A M E S O c tober 13 –17, 2 010 Kentuck y E x p osition Center, Louisville, K Y

A team is made up ofcompetitors with dogs from no more than two of thefour height classes (e.g., 12"/26", 16"/26", 22"/22"”,etc). Each team member competes in StandardAgility, Jumpers, Gamblers and Snooker, with theirscores accumulated for the team.Individual awards are also recognized for anindividual’s success in each class. After the firstfour classes, the top teams will advance to the fifthand final round—the thrilling Relay Finals. Here is a brief description of the five classes thatmake up a team tournament:Standard—Course includes between 17 and20 obstacles including ramps, tunnels, weavepoles, and a variety of jumps and hurdles, with anaverage course distance of between 175 and 185yards. Time-plus-Faults scoring applies.Jumpers—A jumping course including between17 and 20 jumps and hurdles, tunnels and a stringof weave poles. Time-plus-Faults scoring applies.Gamblers Choice—The course is presentedwith no apparent sequence, with points assignedin varying values to the obstacles at judge’sdiscretion. The competitor determines their ownpath to accumulate as many points as possible inthe time allotted by the judge. Point Basis scoringapplies.Snooker Agility—Similar to Gamblers, butthe point values and sequence are defined similarto the billiard game of Snooker. The handler mustfollow the appropriate “Snooker” sequence, buthas choices on which point value obstacles totake at points along the way. Point Basis scoringapplies.Relay—Teammates perform a course together, passing a baton between handlers at strategicpoints on the course. Points from this final classare added to the team’s (or pair’s) cumulative teamscore to determine who will be the 2008 champion.Time-plus-faults scoring.Final Team/Pair Overall Standings are calculatedby taking the sum total of scores from standard, jumpers and relay classes (Time-plus-Faultsscoring) and subtracting from a standard 1140point value, and the combining points earned fromGamblers and Snooker to arrive at a final teamscore on an overall point basis.OTHER AGILITY EVENTSVeterans All-Round competitors will competein the Performance Versatility Pairs classes (seeschedule), with the top three Veterans All Aroundteams in each height class—8", 12", 16" and22"—competing in a special showcase exhibitionimmediately prior to the Grand Prix of Dog AgilityWorld Championship finals on Sunday afternoon.Junior Handlers (under 18 years of age),will compete in four levels in standard agility—Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Senior—during the day Saturday and Sunday. Thosewith top scores in Saturday’s Intermediate andSenior classes will compete in a showcase onSaturday night just prior to the $10,000 Dog AgilitySteeplechase championship finals.dockjumpingWalk-ons are welcome to participate inthis thrilling sport. An additional entry feeis required in the amount of $20 per wave, which includes multiple practice jumps andcompetition jumps.Event runs Thursday through Sunday.Spectators shouldn’t miss the Pro Divisionfinal “wave” on Sunday at 3 pm.We don’t recommend that people jump youngdogs on hard surfaces until they are at least12 to 18 months of age, but water jumping canbegin earlier. You can prepare in advance by training your dogto be driven for your chase object, and get themused to diving into the water for it. Then you adda little platform placed a couple of inches offthe water and work your way up to a 40’ dockthat is two feet above the surface of the water. The key to distance is just like a long jumper—speed, momentum, and ability to launch from thevery end of the dock— the ultimate launch zone.Every official jump, or “wave,” for all competitors—seasoned professionals and newcomers alike—are tracked and ranked nationally by SplashDogs ® ,one of the governing bodies for the sport of dockjumping. There is no age limit for handlers andSplashDogs events are open to dogs of any sizeor breed, purebred or mixed breed alike.Because of the extreme popularity of this event, plan to come to the show early to sign up. There isa 40-dog limit per wave, which includes practicetime plus two competitive jumps, and a 24-doglimit in the finals.
