The Mary McAleese Legal Executive <strong>Scholarship</strong> Scheme,<strong>Griffith</strong> Campus,South Circular Road,<strong>Dublin</strong> 8.<strong>Scholarship</strong>s to <strong>External</strong> <strong>candidates</strong> -Operating procedures1. <strong>External</strong> <strong>candidates</strong> are classified as those undertaking the IILEX programme and notemployed by any organisations from where the Trustees are appointed.2. The Mary McAleese Legal Executive <strong>Scholarship</strong> Scheme has been established forstudents who have the talent and ability to study to become legal executives and to obtainofficial recognition of their qualification at Level 7 of the National Framework ofQualifications, but are precluded from doing so because of the existence of a significantfinancial barrier preventing the realisation of the students potential through education.They may be currently employed in the legal sector or in the future would be eligible foremployment in the legal sector.3. Canvassing by or on behalf of a candidate will result in disqualification.4. Candidates must meet the minimum entry requirements as defined in the HETACvalidation document.5. Candidates must provide one character reference, preferably from a would-be employer.6. All <strong>candidates</strong> must prove the existence of a significant financial barrier preventing therealisation of the candidate’s potential through education. Applicants may be asked toundergo a financial means test. In addition to this, three other conditions must be meet inorder to be considered for a scholarship are as follows:S/he must have attained the age of 23 years of age on the first of January in theyear of entry or have five passes in his Leaving Certificate, or he or s/he musteither be in full-time employment or aspiring to be employed in the legal sector.The official application form must be submitted along with original andcertified supporting documentation along with a copy of his/her passport.If the candidate is un-employed and in receipt of income from the Departmentof Social, Community and Family Affairs (DSCFA), he or she must supplyevidence of receipt of one of the following:i. Unemployment Benefitii. One-parent family benefitiii. Pension benefitiv. Family Income Supplement Benefitv. Disability Benefit7. A maximum of twenty scholarships will be awarded annually for the duration of one yearof the programme and will cover the successful candidate’s course fee, examination feeand registration fee.


8. The Trustees will make the decision as to who will be awarded scholarships. The Trustees’decision will be final. The trustees cannot enter into correspondence or discussion withunsuccessful <strong>candidates</strong>.9. The Trustees will meet once a year, during the month of September in order to considerapplications. <strong>Application</strong>s must be made before 14 th September each year and the decisionof the trustees will be made on or before the 30 th September each year and communicatedto all applicants as soon as is reasonably possible thereafter. A conditional scholarshipletter of offer shall be made to the successful <strong>candidates</strong>. The trust will not enter intocorrespondence or discussion with unsuccessful <strong>candidates</strong>.10. A maximum of twenty conditional offers will be made. If the selected applicants accept thescholarships they will be awarded the official scholarship. The scholarship is applicable tothe original course selected and is not transferable to any alternative course. If less than thetwenty selected <strong>candidates</strong> meet the required criteria, the Trustees will not be obliged tomake additional offers. <strong>Scholarship</strong>s cannot be deferred to future years.11. Each academic year, the trustees must review all scholarships made in the previous year.The trustees have the right to discontinue a scholarship for future academic years if itconsiders the student has not shown sufficient academic progress or whose attendance onthe course is below 80% in a given stage of the programme.12. How will <strong>candidates</strong> be selected?To qualify for consideration <strong>candidates</strong> must fulfil the following criteria:i. Prove the existence of a significant financial barrier preventing the realisationof the candidate’s potential through education. Applicants may be asked toundergo a financial means test.ii. Provide evidence of legal entitlement to remain in Ireland on one of thefollowing grounds :(i) naturalised Irish citizenship (ii) refugee status(iii) Humanitarian Leave or Leave to Remain in Ireland (iv) holding an (Irish)work permit for past three years.iii. Present evidence of being resident in Ireland for a minimum of three yearsprior to entry to <strong>College</strong> (i.e. applicants to the 2012 Scheme will be requiredto have been resident in Ireland since September 2009).iv. Meet academic entry requirements.v. Submit a written statement in support of their application indicating theirmotivation and commitment to pursuing a <strong>College</strong> education.vi Provide evidence in the form of a written statement in support that theypossess the qualities necessary to act as a role model to others facing similarbarriers.Based on these selection criteria, a shortlist of <strong>candidates</strong> will be drawn up. Short-listed<strong>candidates</strong> may be interviewed by the Trustees and other experts at the invitation of theBoard. Candidates must be available to attend for interview at the designated times.13. Selection and NotificationCandidates will be selected and recommended for scholarships on the basis of theirapplication and statement in support, interview and verification of supportingdocumentation. Only <strong>candidates</strong> who are offered and accept a place in <strong>Griffith</strong> <strong>College</strong> canbe awarded the scholarship. Candidates should inform themselves of the rules andregulations governing application and admission to the <strong>College</strong>s programmes.
