engineer. Th<strong>is</strong> year’s talk about<br />

Macdonell’s (Mac) multi-continental war<br />

should, <strong>the</strong>refore, have taken me to farflung<br />

places to view <strong>the</strong> scenes <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong><br />

significant actions but <strong>the</strong> current trend <strong>of</strong><br />

r<strong>is</strong>k assessments prohibits my travel to<br />

Nigeria, Cameroons or Iraq and I have<br />

had to content myself with Belgium.<br />

In June 1917 Mac found himself at<br />

Nieuport commanding battalions in 32<br />

Div<strong>is</strong>ion and, never having studied <strong>the</strong><br />

terrain <strong>the</strong>re, Emmie and I had 2 days on<br />

site in March. We stayed at <strong>the</strong> Gemeete<br />

Hu<strong>is</strong>, Sint Jor<strong>is</strong> at <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Brit<strong>is</strong>h sector which was a two div<strong>is</strong>ion<br />

frontage. 1 Div<strong>is</strong>ion were in <strong>the</strong> “Dunes”<br />

sector near <strong>the</strong> sea and 32 Div held from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Geleide Brook to Sint Jor<strong>is</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Sint Jor<strong>is</strong>” sector <strong>is</strong> low-lying<br />

dominated by waterways, six <strong>of</strong> which<br />

meet at <strong>the</strong> Achterhaven (Ganzepoot)<br />

south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King Albert Monument. 95<br />

years on, <strong>the</strong> ground differs significantly<br />

from Linesman’s trench maps. <strong>The</strong> key<br />

reasons being <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> a new<br />

road to provide for traffic growth and<br />

prov<strong>is</strong>ion for an amazing array <strong>of</strong> yachts.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Spaarbekken man-made lake<br />

imposes itself north <strong>of</strong> St Jor<strong>is</strong>. After<br />

viewing <strong>the</strong> lake <strong>the</strong> predominance <strong>of</strong><br />

water resulted in mid afternoon m<strong>is</strong>t<br />

which inhibited fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>photo</strong>graphy, as<br />

testified by th<strong>is</strong> <strong>photo</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nieuport<br />

Memorial to <strong>the</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sing with <strong>the</strong> King<br />

Albert Monument in <strong>the</strong> background.<br />

Next morning we went west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ijzer<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> sea and looked across <strong>the</strong><br />

river to <strong>the</strong> Dunes held by 1 Div<strong>is</strong>ion until<br />

<strong>the</strong> German’s launched <strong>the</strong>ir attack on<br />

View across Ijzer from West bank<br />

river. We <strong>the</strong>n cycled via <strong>the</strong><br />

Achterhaven and round <strong>the</strong> huge yacht<br />

haven east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ijzer into <strong>the</strong> dunes<br />

area which <strong>is</strong> now a nature reserve.<br />

Thanks to Linesman I had 1917 trench<br />

maps and current 1:25000 maps on my<br />

mobile phone so could follow Mac’s<br />

movements.<br />

Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dunes area <strong>is</strong> a military<br />

zone and <strong>the</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> concrete<br />

emplacements from WW2 can still be<br />

seen. From <strong>the</strong> high dunes near <strong>the</strong><br />

th July 1917. I imagined <strong>the</strong> scene as<br />

survivors <strong>of</strong> 2KRRC and 1 st Northants<br />

tried to escape to <strong>the</strong> west bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

coast it <strong>is</strong> possible to look down on <strong>the</strong><br />

lighthouse and across <strong>the</strong> nature reserve<br />

to Nieuport in <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>tance.<br />

Returning to Sint Jor<strong>is</strong> we retraced our<br />

cycle tracks through <strong>the</strong> dunes and
