The new PAM-wideroundtable was a success and will becontinued next year. A great deal of newinformation was shared at our sessions, and stimulating presentations were givenby a variety of speakers. We continue to act as a group topresent a unified library position in relationshipswith vendors, societies, andother librarians. Our visibility and influencecontinues to grow as we-engage in amore proactive rather than reactive fashion. The decision to create and post anInternet directory for useful gopher andWorld Wide Web (WWW) locations is justone example of taking the lead in the newand dynamic information network. Let'sstrive to have the PAM Division continueto be seen on the cutting edge well intothe future.Plans are already underway for nextyear's conference in Montreal. Preliminarysessions will include the usualroundtables (see the list of next year'smoderators in the front of the new PAMDirectory), a multi-Division session entitledNavigators and Collaborators on theIP~teriiei, a broader vendor update, andour PAM Division Wentieth AnniversaryParty.Once again, thank you to all the volunteersthat make PAM work. VO~. 22. NO. 1 P-A-M-COMPUTER SCIENCE NEWSComputer Science RoundtableModerated byJames W. Leonardleonard@watson.ibm.comOn the last afternoon before field tripday, about 50 people gathered for discussionof the literature of computer science. To promote informality and conversation,we rearranged the chairs from straightrows to an oval. We also began with acircuit around the group giving ournames and institutions.Computer Science - Technical Reports:Rebecca Lasher, Stanford UniversityComputer Science and MathematicsLibrarian, reviewed the CS-TR project formaking computer science technical reportsavailable electronically among theparticipating universities: Stanford, UCBerkeley, Carnegie-Mellon University,Cornell, and MIT. US ARPA is funding theproject via the Corporation for NationalResearch Initiatives (CNRI). The infrastructurehas been assembled, and scanningis being done. Access via Mosaic isbeing developed, and they are also workingon filters and SDI programs. Handlingof copyright is important in theproject because technical reports are oftenpublished later as journal articles, withcopyright ownership being signed over tothe journal publisher. Reports that haveappeared as journal articles may havecopyright-based restrictions on theirdistribution. At Stanford, they are usingnon-exclusive copyright agreementswhere possible. Work is being done withthe Library of Congress to develop anelectronic copyright registration system.Bulletin August 1994Also being developed are unique identifiers(like URNS) that indicate content andallow bibliographic records to be independentof machine addresses. A client willbe able search an index and then access a"name resolver" to get copyright registrationinformation and location informationfor desired documents, which are thenretrieved from servers.Chicago Journal of TheoreticalComputer Science:Ruth Seidman, Head of the MIT Engineeringand Science Libraries, gave anupdate on this electronic journal to bepublished by MIT Press. After paying asubscription fee, subscribers will be enrolledon a listserv. Articles will be availablein either LaTex or Postscript format.A version in SGML is also being developed. There will be electronic archives atMIT and at Virginia Tech. In the discussionRuth distributed a flyer that includedthe foEowing E-mail address md phonenumber: journals-orders@mit.edu, 617-253-2889. The MIT Libraries will have iton a Gopher, and subscribers may putcopies on their internal networks. Therewill be a call for papers in late June andthe first articles are expected to be publishedin August or September. Fifteenabstracting and indexing services havebeen contacted. Already three serviceshave agreed to list the articles in theirdatabases: ISI, ACM, and MR. Copyrightwill be as usual. Nonsubscribers will beable to obtain copies from the MIT Libraries.Computer Science Homepage:David Stem mentioned that KathleenRobertson is attempting to develop a listof WWW access points for the creation ofa computer science Home Page locatortool.
