33Getting<strong>Data</strong>into<strong>SPSS</strong>Figure 3-6Multiple worksheets in same workbookWhen reading multiple worksheets, you lose some of the flexibility available <strong>for</strong>reading individual worksheets:• You cannot specify cell ranges.• The first non-empty row of each worksheet should contain column labels thatwill be used as variable names.• Only basic data types—string <strong>and</strong> numeric—are preserved, <strong>and</strong> string variablesmay be set to an arbitrarily long width.ExampleIn this example, the first worksheet contains in<strong>for</strong>mation about store location, <strong>and</strong> thesecond <strong>and</strong> third contain in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> different departments. All three contain acolumn, Store Number, that uniquely identifies each store, so, the in<strong>for</strong>mation in thethree sheets can be merged correctly regardless of the order in which the stores arelistedoneachworksheet.*readexcel2.sps.
