VIPNEWS > JUNE 2012
Well, here we are again – how was your July
without us? I hope the sun shone on you
more than it has in the once proud fishing
port of Brighton! It’s been mainly damp and
on the days when it looked as though a trip
to the rocky beach might have been possible
a sea fret has rolled in – what is that? – you
may well ask – it’s a grey mist which rises off
the sea and floats inexorably onto the shore
obscuring all as it blankets the whole town –
sorry, City. What with our Television deciding
it had had enough of all that colour business
- going black and white just in time for the
Olympics, it’s been a somewhat monochrome
few weeks…and did I tell you that a seagull -
not Shitty I hasten to add, much as I hate him
he had at least been introduced sort of, no, a
complete stranger of a seagull, swooped and
stole a sandwich right out of my hand!
However I did get my ration of sun, and
celebrated my birthday with a bottle of
local bubbly (you’re not supposed to call it
champagne but it tasted fine to me!) to a live
soundtrack provided by New Order, courtesy
of the organisers of EXIT Festival in Novi Sad,
Serbia. EXIT were also hosts to two days of
meetings to discuss the future of the Central
and Eastern European Talent Exchange
Programme (CEETEP) and how it can benefit
the development of the music business in the
region.
But, other people have had worse problems
with the weather, as rain and mud was again
the dominant feature of many of the earlier
festivals in the UK. The damage to the grass
and soil of the Royal Parks after a couple of
events was so bad that it looked for a while
as if Hyde Park would not go ahead with
some of the shows planned to tie in with The
Olympics for fear of irreparable damage . The
Hit Factory Live – due to featur e Australian
pop idols Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s
long-awaited reunion as performers – was
cancelled mainly due to the mud – although
some there might have been some relief in
this as it is thought that ticket sales were not
what they might have been. Joe Cohen, chief
executive of online ticket resale site Seat
wave commented, “The weather is awful .
It is tough to have an event in a lake or a
pond. But my guess is some events have used
the rain as an excuse to cancel because they
were not sold out.” The secondary market
for tickets for outdoor concerts has not been
performing well. Certainly the festival market
is over saturated – both by rain and an exces
of events, and on top of this competition
from free events set up alongside The
Olympics plus The Games themselves have
not helped the situation. Even the usually
upbeat DJ Rob Da Bank, organiser of Bestival
and Camp Bestival on the Isle of Wight, although
reasonably confident of his own
events told The Guardian, “Festivals are my
lifeblood. I’m an optimistic person but this
year is getting close to defeating even me.”
But it’s not just festivals; Madonna tickets are
on offer through secondary sites at less than
face value.
However in the end most things went ahead
– unlike The Boss and Macca’s extended
jam in the Park, which came to an abrupt
end as the plug was pulled. But in the end,
silencing the cynics, of which I have to admit
I was one, The Olympics, Opening Ceremony
and all was a triumph – and even a certain
patchiness to the Closing Ceremony couldn’t
extinguish (apart from the Olympic Flame)
the general good feeling that had been
generated – we did, land up being proud to
be British - for how long we’ll see!
So, after our short summer break – Ladies
Brent
Grulke
of SXSW
Dies
Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com
All at VIP were saddened to hear of the
sudden and unexpected death of Brent
Grulke on the morning of August 13th. The
Creative Director of SXSW passed away as a
result of a heart attack after undergoing oral
surgery. He was 52.
Previously a writer and Records Review Editor
for the Austin Chronicle, he also worked
as a record producer, sound engineer , tour
manager and record company executive ,
working in the marketing division of
Spindletop Records in the early 1990s.
Grulke worked for the Austin, Texas based
event from its beginnings in 1987. He
became creative director in 1994 initially
building the event’s reputation for booking
local and underground and then going on to
help create the international reputation that
it now commands.
SXSW director and co-founder Roland
Swenson , commented, “A lot of Brent’s
personality was in SXSW. He was
adventurous and knowledgeable and excited
about creative people and endeavours. He
didn’t like the usual and mundane. He was
open-minded enough to know that his taste
wasn’t always the most important thing, so
he was open to new things.”
Una Johnston, the European representative
for SXSW said, “Brent played a really central
role in the dynamism of SXSW Music
Festival . His background in live music as
a sound engineer and tour manager meant
he understood all the things that musicians
need to develop their careers and he created
a unique environment at SXSW that was very
artist friendly. He also appreciated diversity and
expanded the programme for international
showcases. We are all heartbroken to have
lost him, he was a wonderful colleague, a
loyal friend and a champion of good music,
no matter where it originated.”
Brent was an extremely well known figure
at many of the European Festival and
Conference events – I have personally shared
a beer or several with him in several countries
on many an occasion and I, like many others,
will miss his company.
He is survived by his wife, Kristen, and 6-year-
old son, Graham, as well as brothers Brad
and Brian.
Heartfelt commiserations go out from all of
the VIP staff to Brent’s family and his very
many o friends.
The family has established the Graham
Sales Down in 2012
Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com
Records, concerts and festivals are not the only sectors of the UK
music industry having a torrid time of it in 2012. According to UK
broadsheet The Guardian leading UK Music magazines NME and
Q have suffered substantial decreases in sales in a difficult first six
months of 2012
Amongst monthlies the Bauer-owned Q is the worst performer in the
sector with sales down 16.7% compared to the six months to the end
of December and 19.7% year on year, according to the latest Audit
Bureau of Circulations figures released on Thursday, and recently
appointed editor Andrew Harrison faces an uphill struggle to revive
the figures.
Other Bauer titles Kerrang! and Mojo fared considerably better, with
sales also decreasing but by a much smaller margin, Kerrang! fell
4.5% period on period and 6.6% year on year to 40,203; Mojo, the
best-selling paid for title in the sector, dropped 2.7% period on period
and 2.4% year on year to 85,149.
The second biggest faller in the category was IPC Media-owned NME,
down 13.5% period on period and 17.6% year on year to 23,924.
VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2012 > INDEPTH STORY > CEETEP
CEETEP
– The Programme Progresses
Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com
As many of you know ETEP (European
Talent Exchange Program) was introduced
in 2003 to facilitate one of the main goals
of Eurosonic Noorderslag, the exchange and
support of new European music in Europe.
Each year ETEP brings together the leading
European festivals, radio and other media at
Eurosonic Noorderslag and encourages them
to ‘exchange’ a selection of artists. Since the
start of the ETEP program in 2003 a total of
1359 shows by 459 European artists were
presented at the 60 ETEP festivals (2003 –
2011). The current figures for ETEP in 2012
are 259 confirmed shows by 95 European
artists from 20 different countries, a new
record in the ETEP history!
Now a sub-programme of ETEP is in
operation , Eurosonic Noorderslag and coorganisers
Sziget and Exit Festivals with
EU financial support have developed a
scheme for the circulation of CEE artists and
repertoire in Central and Eastern Europe at
the festivals and in the media, together with
a total of 13 festivals in the CEE region and
selected CEE media partners. This is known
as CEETEP.
Over the summer months there have been
two sets of meetings aimed at progressing
the aims and intentions of the Programme.
The first was hosted by EXIT, during this year’s
Festival on July 13/14, with Ruud Berends of
Eurosonic and ETEP overseeing, and yours
truly moderating the discussions, bringing
together managers, artists and other artist
representatives from the various countries in
the region. Day 1 was devoted to introducing
all those attending and then the presentation
by general analysis and discussion. Points
covered were: each country’s local situation ;
the supply or lack of adequate venues, artist
national promoters; physical releases; airplay ;
labels; Authors Right organizations- etc.
the aim was to provide an overview of the
situation which over the next four years
CEETEP may be able to help with.
After an evening of dinner, drinks and all
that the Festival had to offer, Day 2 applied
itself to Solutions and Direction, addressing
just how the various markets could improve
their situation, and how working together
and involving others, such as Author’s Rights
and independent Cultural Organisations etc,
could aid the development and the growth
of the industry in the region.
Guest speakers over the two days included
the highly experienced Estonian promoter
Juri Makarov who talked of the days when
his country was part of the Soviet Union and
how music and music festivals contributed
to independence. Toomas Olljum , manager
of the Ewert & The Two Dragons, talked
of his more recent experience in Estonia,
breaking his act into Western territories with
the assistance of Estonian Music Week and
ETEP. The third speaker was Laszlo Hegedu s
of Multi Media in Budapest, Hungary,
his experiences as a promoter, manager,
record company, in several countries in the
region over nearly forty years.

VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2012 > INDEPTH STORY > CEETEP
VIP News asked some of those attending for
their reactions:
Michal Ocovan – promoter and manager
of Got Blue Balls in Slovakia said:
It was a pleasure to meet everyone at Exit
Festival. It was an unexpected experience
that opened our eyes more in the field of
promotion, networking and booking. I was
very excited by the meetings and talking with
everyone involved with CEETEP. It was very
interesting and we hope that we can arrange
something with other artists. We are still in
contact with them and we are looking for
possibilities to bring them to our country and
also to play with our band Got Blue Balls .
Firstly the opportunity to play at Waves of
Vienna festival is very good for us. We have
played festivals in the Czech and Slovak
republics and just now it is an opportunity
to take our music across borders. We hope
that everything will be good and people will
like our music. I hope to see everyone again
at some other festivals, and meetings and if
CEETEP needs to arrange something in future
please we would be happy to help.
www.vagaboond.com
Ruth Koleva – artist from Bulgaria:
In my opinion, the meeting went really well. It
was amazing to hear Lazslo and Juri’s stories .
It was great that we all had the chance to
meet up and see the common things and
the differences in our music industries . To
me personally, it was enlightening to hear
in which fields the other countries in the
region are better developed than in my
own country . I took notes. I am working on
trying to make some major changes. I work
as a performer, producer and manager for
my band. I am based in Bulgaria and in the
Netherlands.
http://facebook.com/music.ruth
http://ruth.bg/en
Dana Glavan – manager of Suie
Paparude , Romania
For me, it was a great opportunity to meet
people in the region to learn about their
markets and to share my experience. I
thank the team for being such beautiful
hosts. Our meeting was a great start for
what we all hope to achieve in the region .
Thank you to for being such a great
moderator of the discussion and for bringing
us your experience and your lovely British
accent in a ‘sea’ full of eastern accent
speakers. (I suppose I should have edited
that bit out – but why turn down such a
nice compliment! – Ed.)
I know that once I chose to work with the
band, Suie Paparude www.suiiepaparude.
com Facebook.com/suiepaparude) as a
band manager I automatically assumed that
I couldn’t fail. Things just cannot go wrong
when I am responsible for their careers. Most
probably this is the worst nightmare that a
band manager can have: fail to promote a
talented artist. There are so many good and
talented artists with access to people that
don’t manage to break the borders, to make
their music popular due to bad managers or
due to the negligence of some promoters.
In Romania, unfortunately, things like this
happen quite often and I do not want to be
part of it and fail. The CEETEP EXIT meeting
opened some doors for us. Discussing various
topics one conclusion was coming to everybody’s
mind: no matter from where you are,
you need to work a lot and fight for what
you believe in.
We are famous in Romania, being the first
electronic music band, but the CEETEP
meeting and all the lovely people that I met
there show me that is not enough to stay in
your own country. We need to spread our music
abroad. What is CEETEP doing? Putting us
together with the right people, helping us to
talk to each other; sharing others experience
and finally helping us not fail our artists and
their hard work. CEETEP can be the best
support that we might have…… we need to
stay in touch!
CEETEP RESULTS
On August 9, 2012, Eurosonic Noorderslag
announced the initial CEETEP results in
Groningen , with the following statement:
Eurosonic Noorderslag and co-organisers
Sziget Festival and Exit Festival are proud
to announce the current results of the first
year of the CEETEP program. CEETEP was
developed to stimulate the circulation of
CEE acts and repertoire in Central Eastern
Europe at the CEETEP festivals and in the
media. CEETEP is a sub-program of ETEP,
the European Talent Exchange Program. By
working together the organisers will help CEE
acts perform across borders within Central
the whole of Europe and beyond.
As announced today, August 9th at the
special CEETEP press conference at The
Sziget Festival with Fruzsina Szep from Sziget
Festival, Ivan Milivojev from Exit festival and
Peter Smidt from Eurosonic Noorderslag, the
results for year 1 so far are: 24 confirmed
shows by 16 European artists from 9 different
countries. A great and promising start for the
CEETEP program. The 3 CEE acts with the
most bookings at the 13 CEETEP festivals
will receive an invitation to play at Eurosonic
Noorderslag 2013.
Fruzsina Szep from Sziget festival
“The only thing I can say is that all the energy
we invested in building up the CEETEP project
in the past years together with many Central
and Eastern European colleagues and with
Eurosonic Noordeslag was 100% worth all
the time and energy. We are building cultural
bridges and the first real foundations were
laid down this year. And we aim to grow
from building bridges to building a ‘cultural
highway’ for our artists in the CEE region and
between now and 2015, we hope to have all
roads open for artists to tour freely. I honestly
believe in that goal, and this professional and
artistic cooperation and exchange is the true
sign we are heading towards this already. I’m
happy, honoured and proud to belong to the
CEETEP family.”
Peter Smidt from Eurosonic Noorderslag:
“We are very happy that with 24 festival
shows from 16 acts at 13 festivals the first
year of CEETEP made a strong start. Given
the media attention we believe all acts made
a good start in new countries and expanded
their markets. And success is not only to
be seen in countries within CEETEP. Several
CEETEP acts are already booked at Waves
Vienna in Austria. We are looking forward
to the presence of the most booked CEETEP
acts at Eurosonic Noorderslag in January.”
PRS for Music Launches Music
Makeover 2012
Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com
This announcement deals with two things which feature prominently
in my life – music and pubs – so I think this initiative deserves attention
and support! – It’s your round! (Ed)
In advance of the important Live Music Act 2012, which comes into
affect this October, PRS for Music launches the second edition of the
competition to find the UK’s best music pubs, The Music Makeover.
The £5,000 award is intended to help pubs create the right space for
music so they can remain competitive and crucially, a key destination
for locals to enjoy. The passing of the Live Music Act means small
venues in England and Wales (under a 200-person capacity) will
no longer need local authority permission to host performances
of live music. PRS for Music will be contacting 41,000 pubs with a
comprehensive guide to making live music work including tips on
genre choice, stage lighting, jukeboxes, gig promotion and ticketing.
Research conducted by PRS for Music with pub-data specialists
CGA Strategy Ltd. identified a significant positive impact of live and
recorded music on sales in pubs – an increase of £667 on Fridays and
Saturdays and 36 more units each day during the week. In deeply
challenging economic times for the great British pub, the research
confirms that live music is a vital life-line to many venues.
Francis Rossi of Status Quo remarked: “Don’t even start me on the
importance of the pub circuit. In the early days we were always gigging
in local pubs, throwing our kit in the back of the van and motoring
The Market Inn, Faversham, Music Makeover winner 2011
from town to town. We pretty much mastered our live sound and
style in those old pubs.”
Horace Trubridge of the Musicians’ Union stated: “Pubs play such a
vital role in many musicians’ careers and provide an essential platform
from which talent can grow. Demonstrating how music can really
benefit pubs underlines how intertwined the two industries are. We
need to protect and support the pub sector and the live music circuit
as they are both such an integral part of the UK cultural scene.”
Last year’s Music Makeover winner David Pott of The Market Inn,
Faversham, said: “We were extremely pleased to win – pleased for
us and for the pub. The prize money will be a great boost for the
pub and the community. This will put The Market Inn on the map for
music. We’re already receiving demos from local bands who want to
play here.” http://www.facebook.com/dotTICKETS.
AWARDS
Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com
If things in many areas of the music business are looking a little down, don’t let it get to you, there’s nothing
like the occasional Awards Ceremony to make industry players feel recognized, making it all worthwhile, and
cheering everyone up - here are the plans for three of these events…
Festival Awards & Conference 2012
The UK Festival Awards ceremony and UK
Festival Conference will both take place at
London’s historic Roundhouse this year for its
ninth edition to gather the nation’s festival
industry under one roof in the wake of an
eventful and challenging year for the sector.
The winners, decided by a combination of
public and industry vote, will be revealed
and presented with their awards at the
gala ceremony on the evening of Monday
3rd December, featuring a big-name host,
gourmet dinner, live entertainment and a
notoriously lively after - show party.
Festivals wishing to take part in this year’s
awards can register online now at www.
During the day of the awards show, the UK
Festival Conference will be held in the main
auditorium of the venue, featuring a keynote
speaker and a programme of seniorlevel
panelists discussing the key challenges
and opportunities facing the industry at this
time.
Steve Jenner, Festival Awards co-founder says:
“After achieving a long-held dream of staging
the Festival Awards at The Roundhouse
last year, we had to take stock and seriously
reassess where we could go from there. We
concluded that the only way is up and set
about taking things to even greater heights
in 2012. Upgrading the Conference venue to
the Roundhouse was one such step. Over the
coming weeks we will be announcing further
exciting developments , underlining the fact
that 2012 is set to be another landmark year
for Festival Awards.”
Tickets for both events are being handled
by Eventbrite, and are available to order
now from: festivalawards.eventbrite.com.
Chris McCormick, Festival Awards cofounder
and sponsorship director
comments : “We are delighted to welcome
Eventbrite on-board as a major sponsor this
year. As one of the most progressive forces
in the reformatted ticketing landscape, we
believe they have a lot to offer to the festival
market in the UK and beyond, and it’s a
pleasure to be working with them.”
Marion Gamel, VP Marketing EMEA,
Eventbrite comments: “Eventbrite is
delighted to be sponsoring the UK Festival
Awards 2012. We are also very happy to
be handling the ticketing of this event, that
will be a celebration of the outstanding
creativity and variety of festivals in the UK.”
As previously announced, overseas sister
event The European Festival Awards will
return to Groningen, Holland, on the opening
night of the Eurosonic Noorderslag showcase
festival and conference on Wednesday 9th
January, 2013. Tickets are available now,
with early-bird discounts available.
Steve Jenner
Festival Awards Ltd, the company that
produces the UK and European Festival
Awards as well as the UK Festival
Conference , has confirmed that UK-based
Mondiale Publishing has recently purchased
a majority stake of the organisation. Original
founders Steve Jenner and Chris McCormick
will retain prominent operational positions
VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2012
Another Episode In The Viagogo-Saga
Manfred Tari mt@vip-booking.com
Earlier this year the UK Channel 4 Dispatches TV-Report “The Great
Ticket Swindle” investigated the business practices of Viagogo and
Seatwave in some detail.
It was revealed that it was the case that staffmembers of Viagogo,
which had previously portrayed itself as a ticket exchange where
fans could sell tickets to fans, were actually buying and selling tickets
via the company website. Now another TV-report has revealed how
a Viagogo- staff member is buying and selling tickets applying a
surcharge to consumers typical for ticket exchanges.
The Danish journalist Jens Vithner working for the consumer magazine
“Kontant” presented by the public station DR1, has unearthed even
more details about how Viagogo goes about its business. The report
entitled “Snedige billethajer” (cunning ticket tout – Ed.) revealed
that, “…the territorial manger of Viagogo in The Netherlands is a
major seller on Viagogo.” In the announcement for the show Vithner
declared that the manager “puts tickets for sale on Viagogo before he
has bought the real ticket and that he disguises that he is a Viagogo
employee selling on the site, by removing his name and the price from
the ticket using Photoshop.”
The report was aired on August 14. VIP News spoke with Vithner
about his discoveries and findings about the business methods that
accompany so called secondary ticketing, previously considered a
black market.
Isn’t the unauthorized resale of tickets in Denmark forbidden
by law?
– Yes - According to Danish law it is illegal to “offer a ticket for sale at
a higher price then the original”
What have been the main results and findings of your report?
After our research we could prove, that some of the tickets on
Viagogo are put up for sale on Viagogo as a secondary ticket, even
before the primary ticket is bought. Then we found out, that the
ticket we bought was being manipulated, before it was sent to the
buyer. The customer’s name and the price were removed. When we
made a search on the buyer’s name, Hugo Schaper, we found out,
that he wasn’t just an unlucky fan, who couldn’t get to the concert,
but the national manager of Viagogo.
How did you become aware of the involvement of this Viagogo
Executive buying and selling tickets for concerts and events in
Denmark?
The Danish Broadcasting Company has a Concert Hall; we allied
with its music manager who went on to Viagogo to find tickets to
a concert . He found out that Viagogo had tickets for a concert that
will take place in April and that they had tickets available for a section
(I think it was Section E). But when he checked their internal ticket
system he could see, that they hadn’t sold any tickets for this section
of the Hall.
Then he bought one of these section Etickets on Viagogo’s website
- a couple of hours later someone went into the website of the
concert hall and bought a section E-ticket. An hour later the music
manager received his Eticket from Viagogo. But the ticket had been
manipulated in Photoshop. One of the tickets was sold by the concert
hall to the buyer. The other one was received by the music manager
from Viagogo. It was the same ticket (Same ID and same row and
seat) but the name had been changed. The ticket the music manager
received has the name Sjors on it and the price was missing - The
original had the name Hugo Schaper and the price on it.
THEN, if you google Hugo Schaper, it shows, that he is listed on
Facebook and Linked In, as the national manager of Viagogo in The
Netherlands. That’s how we found him.
You interviewed Danish concert promoters and ticketing
providers for the report, did they give any estimates of the
numbers or the share of tickets sold via Viagogo for popular
events?
– We spoke with the two large ticket providers in Denmark, and
one of them tracked down that Hugo Schaper bought more than
700 tickets for Danish events from their website. They don’t now
how many of their tickets are sold on Viagogo, but they think its
thousands .
The French promoter association Prodiss lobbied successfully
for a law against the unauthorized resale of tickets. The law
foresees penalties of about 15.000 Euros in the first case,
30.000 Euro in case of repetition. Would you say, it needs a
similar degree of penalty in Denmark too, in order to prevent
secondary ticket platforms continuing their business?
– I’m not actually sure what the penalty for reselling is in Denmark -
but not as much as in France. The problem is, that when the sale is
through Viagogo, who has their main office in London (Possibly not
any longer – Ed.) and the server in Switzerland, the Danish Police and
authority can’t do anything about it.

The Danish TV-Report “Kontant”
reveals more details about Viagogo
CUNNING TICKET TOUT
You mentioned that Google Denmark stopped Viagogo
advertisements after your report has been screened. Did
Google provide you with a statement on the case?
We had a statement from Peter Friis CEO of Google Norden in our
late news at 21.00, which declared, ‘We are now suspending the
advertisements, to look at their methods. But at the same time we
will give them the possibility to document, that what they do is legal
in Denmark. Our lawyers will now look into it, and then we have to
see, what will happen next’.
Kåre Quist, Kontant
and Hugo Schaper
Did you obtain any other reactions from consumer protection
or governmental organisations or even media after the
broadcast of the report?
– We had a comment from the Danish consumer council, who wants
the access to Viagogo to be shut down, as we in Denmark have done
with Pirate Bay and some betting companies. Some of the political
parties support that view.
The report includes statements in English by the national manager of Viagogo- and a spokesperson for Viagogo. For further
VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2012
Manfred Tari mt@vip-booking.com
The RIFD-solution provider Intellitix provided the sport company Adidas
with its service for their marketing events during the Olympic Games in
London. These new technologies enable promoters to run their events
with cashless payments but also offer the opportunity to benefit from
many other related technical and new media features that could lead
to significant changes for the structure of production facilities for live
events. VIP News spoke with Greg Parmley, Chief Information Officer
at Intellitix about its engagement for Adidas and about the applications
and possibilities provided by this new service technology.
Which events has Intellitix provided RFID-service for this year?
– Loads! In North America, events include Coachella, Lollapalooza,
Outside Lands, Electric Zoo, Bonaroo, Bamboozle, River’s Edge etc.
There’s a lot. In one weekend we had six running at once – please see
here: www.intellitix.com/resources/newsarticle/20
In Europe this year we’ve done Eurosonic Noorderslag, the Red Hot
Chili Peppers at Knebworth, Wakestock, Tomorrowlands (Europe’s
largest EDM festival), Adidas at the Olympics, and there’s more to
come before the season finishes – we’re looking to announce at least
one more European festival shortly.
Intellitix provided its RIFD-System for Adidas during the
Olympic Games for their marketing events. Can you please
explain what kind of services these were?
– All of the services we provided were based around the venue,
Village Underground, for the duration of the Games. The ‘Adidas
underground ’ shows took place over 12 nights at the venue. Intellitix
provided a pre-registration system that allowed guests to register for
tickets and powered the box office, enabling RFID bands to be quickly
linked to individual profiles when that guest arrived. We provided
a secure RFID access control system that was used during the day
by security to limit access to authorized staff, and then at night
Intellitix
– In touch with Olympia!
Greg Parmley, Chief Information Officer at Intellitix
when the event was running, in order to ensure that only authorized
guests gained access. A visual wristband check by security was not
possible because the bands were the same every night, despite there
being a different event, so all access was dictated by our system.
The access control system also gave regular reports as to how many
people were in the venue, unique enters and exits etc.
All guests had drinks tokens preloaded onto their bands. All bar staff
were issued with handheld scanners so that guests were able to
redeem them. This proved very popular, as I’m sure you can imagine!
It was extremely fast as well. Again, it all ran with 100% uptime.
And Facebook registered wristbands could post in several ways:
1. A post was triggered on entry as they arrived. 2. An Adidas branded
Live Click Station was wall mounted – guests could Live Click their
RFID wristbands to post a text update. 3. Using an Adidas branded
Live Click Photo Station guests were able to instantly upload photos
to their Facebook profile using just their RFID wristbands. If someone
hadn’t registered in advance, we had staff able to sign them up on
the spot, using an iPad and a small portable RFID reader.
Please elaborate on the settings and results for the ‘pre and
post social network communication’ services you provided for
Adidas?
– Pre – getting people to pre register on Facebook, putting the system
in place. Posts – being able to evaluate how many posts were made,
and so calculate how effective the activation was.
Looking into the sector for sport events, did you discover that
the needs and demands of sport events for RIFD-solutions are
different than the ones for music events?
– This was a mixture of music, fashion and sport-inspired events,
and held in a venue, so it felt more rock ‘n’ roll than anything else!

VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2012
Adidas wanted to stage something very special that would connect
with various different scenes in London, and we helped facilitate that.
Intellitix offers their services in North America and in Europe.
Which markets are more progressive or better said which
promoters are more progressive in using RFID solutions for
their events?
– North America is currently busier than Europe, but then our
operation there is a year older, or twice as old depending how you
look at it because the company is only two years old! I would argue
that anyone adopting RFID is progressive though, and not just our
own technology. Most of the major festival promoters are trialling
or considering RFID or cashless payment systems in some way – it’s a
topic that everyone is aware of I think.
Have you also experienced any differences between the
acceptance and the usage of social media tools between event
visitors in North America and Europe?
– It’s too early to say for definite, but there will always be a large
proportion of event goers that are keen to experience new ways of
connecting, or are happy to experiment with new technology. And
there is always a small number that prefer not to engage, which is
fine – everything we do with social media is ‘opt in’. What makes
more of a difference, rather than nationality, is engaging with fans
in the right way, and giving them real value, or exciting them in new,
well communicated ways.
In general, what type of RIFD-services are more of interest
for promoters, cashless payment options or new media
opportunities ?
– In Europe, cashless payment is certainly a big watchword. But social
media amplification can be enormous if done right – look at Bonaroo
as an example - www.intellitix.com/media/videos - so it certainly
should not be undervalued.
How big are the logistical and infrastructure efforts Intellitix
have to undertake to supply promoters with its service, and
how does a typical collaboration between a promoter and
Intellitix shape up?
– Everything we do requires a decent amount of hardware – most of
which is custom-built – and staff to run it. The software side of things
is also all developed in house, and requires monitoring by our team of
developers. So I would describe a typical collaboration with a promoter
as ‘detailed’! A huge amount of effort goes into ensuring that every
single event we’ve ever deployed at has run 100% successfully . When
you’re talking about the access control of an event, or the F&B spend,
they’re hugely important elements of festivals – any sort of system or
service failure in this area is simply not an option.
authorities . On August 10 CTS Eventim formally took over Arena
Management GmbH (AMG), previously owned by the Arena Holding
GmbH. Not as previously reported in local newspapers, that that CTS
Eventim bid together with the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG)
to run the management for the arena, CTS Eventim reported that it is
now going ahead with this deal without AEG.
Previously CTS Eventim and AEG received t approval for the purchase
of Hammersmith Apollo, which both companies will run in a joint
venture. Currently no further news is available regarding the previously
reported investigation by the Prosecution Department Munich
of CTS Eventim CEO Klaus Peter Schulenberg on suspicion of the unauthorized
resale of tickets for the World Cup 2006 in Germany.
However, for CTS Eventim the purchase of AMG indicates a strategy
change. In the past CTS Eventim never undertook serious efforts to
enter the market for venue management. With the joint venture with
AEG in the UK and management of the open air arena Waldbühne
and the concert location Tempodrom in Berlin, the take over of the
management company for the Lanxess Arena can be seen as another
step for CTS Eventim in expanding its portfolio of business activities
into new areas. The current share price for CTS Eventim stands at 24.56
Euro.
MONTHLY FEATURED ARTIST POWERED BY
L.A. Prostitutes
The Story....
The band was founded back in 2007 with the name L.A.
Prostitutes by 4 guys sharing the same passion for rock
*N* Roll and the time when rock stars were rock stars.
Besides the Korsholm Brothers (Fussy – Lead Vocal,
Morten – Lead Guitarist), St. Prostitute includes the
hard hitting drummer Jack Andy and the bass player Kim
“Finn” Mikkelmann, making the band an explosive cocktail
of uncomprised , melodic & extremely powerfull Rock *N* Roll!
In April 2011, ST. Prostitute got the honor of opening ”Fredags
Rock In Tivoli, Copenhagen”. In front of more than 12.000 exciting
audiences the band supported the legendary Danish veterans Pretty Maids.
Through the years St. Prostituteshas played some of Denmark’s most respected
venues (see the tour list below). In January 2010, St. Prostitute was on a PR Tour
in California, USA playing The Viper Room, Whiskey A*GO*GO in Hollywood,
and Wasted Space (Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas) as the first Danish band ever.
Later that year the band was asked to play at the festival ”In The Palace Festival ”
in Bulgaria.
The Music....
St. Prostitute’s music is described as uncompromised and powerfull Rock *N*
Roll with a strong focus on the good melody.
Live….
St. Prostitute is a live band – to the very core! The show is filled with high octane
energy, passion and a lead singer doing what it takes to make the rows in the
back of the audience a part of the show! With eye liner, tattoo’s, rock ‘n’ roll
outfit & Rock clichés, you are guaranteed a Rock *N* Roll show, played as loud
as F¤#K!!
The Debut Album….
The album is recorded, mixed & mastered at Medley Studios, Copenhagen
with producer and engineer Soren Andersen. The mix of St. Prostitute and
Soren Andersen turned out to be a so-called “match made in rock ‘N’ roll
heaven”, Determined to make one of Denmark’s best rock album! Producer
Soren Andersen realizes the potential & star quality of the band, saying “ST.
PROSTITUTE STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD OF MANY ROCK BANDS THAT
CURRENTLY IS ON ROAD – SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE ABLE TO WRITE A
GOOD HOOK - AND THAT IS CRUCIAL”!!
The album “Here Come The Prostitutes” is released 12 March, 2012.
