Status of <strong>Buoy</strong> Data onto GTSThe most recent MSC, Edmonton, monthly ARGOS Summary Report is datedOctober 2001. No one has requested an update and MSC proposes to cease itsproduction. The report is done by Dennis Oracheski and emailed out. Recipientsinclude Etienne Charpentier, Technical Coordinator, Drifting <strong>Buoy</strong> Cooperation Paneland, Estelle Couture, <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Environmental</strong> Data Systems, Department of Fisheriesand Oceans, Canada.The summary outlines buoys / data being transmitted to GTS from the ARGOS DirectReadout Stations at CWEG ... Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and CYQX ... Gander,Newfoundland, Canada (data from Gander uses the CHWX identifier). Included is thelatitude (deg N) and longitude (deg E) position and the list of sensors for each buoy.The report also includes the “status” of some of the data.<strong>Buoy</strong> Strategy and Deployment Plans June 2002 to end of May 20031. Purchased ICEX-Air for this year’s (2002) White Trident deployment.2. MSC buoy will be on board Canadian Coast Guard Ice Breaker Louis S. St. Laurentfor deployment in September west or northwest of Banks Island in support of theJoint (Canada and Japan) Western <strong>Arctic</strong> Climate Study. Plan to provide a buoy forstudy again 2003.3. Plan to continue landing-on-ice deployment out of Eureka in March or Aprilcontingent on continued Polar Continental Shelf Project support and the U.S.National Ice Service allowing us to deploy at least 1 of their buoys on these flights.A minimum of 2 and up to 4 buoys will be deployed with the additional buoys beingin-house assembled MSC buoys.4. Plan to provide a buoy through the April May period for the fuel cache siteestablished about half way between Ellesmere Island and the north pole.Surrounding buoy array will be assessed prior to fuel cache pull-out and the buoymay be left.5.
