HISTORY OF EVANSVILLE ALUMNAE CHAPTERThe local chapter had its beginning in 1944 when a club wasformed through the efforts of Mrs. Daniel Schreiber. GenevieveErickson was president of the club during the early years. TheAlumnae Chapter was installed February 20, 1947. Pauline Fehnwas the first president. Mildred Sale, National ExecutiveSecretary, came for the installation and attended a dinner at theMcCurdy Hotel. In 1945, the first Vesper Musicale was held at St. Lucas Evangelical& Reformed Church (now St. Lucas United Church of Christ). In1947, the process was started to form an active chapter at EvansvilleCollege (now the University of Evansville). Genevieve Ericksonwas instrumental in helping to form the group and was later awardedthe Sword of Honor for her efforts. In 1959-60, a Convention Fund was started to enable the AlumnaeChapter to send a delegate to the National Convention. Thefollowing year was the first year for an Executive Board, a budget, and a Big-Little Sister Project. The Alumnae and College Chaptersalso combined to publish a newsletter. The chapter purchased a piano for the Conrad Baker Foundation, hasfeatured well-known musicians in recital, and has presentedmusicales based on the works of composers from this area. Wesupport the Evansville Philharmonic, the Arts Council, WNIN andSAI Philanthropies. One of our members, Mildred Blake, served as Vice-President ofBeta Province for seven years. At some point after Mildred’sterm, the state was divided into Beta A and Beta B Provinces.Other members who served as Beta A Province Officers areMichelle Cantrell (1993-1997), Peg Edwards (1997-2000) andRena Goss (2000-2006).25

HISTORY – ContinuedOur chapter has won the Province Alumnae ChapterAchievement Award several years – 1996, 1997, 2005, and 2006and the National Alumnae Chapter Achievement Award in 2004.The Mildred Blake Scholarship was established upon receipt of agift from Mildred. She loved SAI and wished to support the BetaEpsilon Chapter with an annual scholarship. After the passing ofPatroness Eleanor Hoos, her daughter Carolyn Hoos Scavoneinformed the chapter that her mother provided for a Beta Epsilonscholarship. This scholarship, begun in 1998, is presentedbiennially. The Chapter had a very successful WW II traveling musicale in1995-96. Music from that time period was performed at severalnursing homes in honor of the 50 th anniversary of the end of thewar. We celebrated our 50 th “birthday” with a party at the February1997 meeting. In May of 2001, three charter members of the Beta EpsilonChapter who are still active with the Evansville Alumnae Chapterwere presented certificates of recognition. They are EulalieWilson, Ruth Grossman Martin and Shirley Ray Clark. Theywere also given a new dangle for charter members, which wascreated by the national organization because of a suggestion fromour chapter. The chapter project, Music for the Troops, begun in 2003 collectedover 1000 music CD's and cassettes to mail to the troops in Iraq. This unique project received media attention and was instrumentalin the chapter receiving the National Alumnae ChapterAchievement for 2003-04.26

HISTORY – ContinuedAfter reading of the project, author Elise K. Kirk sent the chapter144 copies of her book Musical Highlights from the WhiteHouse. In return, the chapter distributed the books, with a letter ofexplanation, to military bands who served in Iraq. The AnnelleChandler McAdams Community Service Award, a NationalFraternity award of $100, was presented to the chapter in 2006 forthis project. The current music education project to support Evansville Title IMiddle School music programs was begun in September 2007.Members of the alumnae chapter volunteered 50 hours formusical tutoring and administrative assistance for threeteachers. Proceeds of $450 from a chapter fund raiser weredivided and presented to the three teachers for their program needsin 2007-08.Revised by Historian Mildred B.
