We need <strong>to</strong> get <strong>to</strong> know them.2011 Joint Commission guidelines specify The hospital prohibits discriminationbased on age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, physical ormental disability,socioeconomic status, sex, sexual orientation, and genderidentity or expression.The <strong>Center</strong> for Disease Control states (CDC): Special Populations Identifiedincludes Risk Status Related <strong>to</strong> Sex & Gender: <strong>LGBT</strong> <strong>Health</strong>, Men who havesex with Men (MSM) & Lesbians. “There is . . . a need for culturally competentmedical care and prevention services that are specific <strong>to</strong> this population. Socialinequality is often associated with poorer health status, and sexual orientationhas been associated with multiple health threats.
