Restorative drying companies step into high gear whenever a flood occurs.Often, they can “rescue” a house if they can begin drying the house within 48 hours, preventingmold and mildew from destroying walls, carpets and floors. The leading company inrestorative drying products and training is Dri-Eaz Products, Inc. of Burlington, WA.Claude Blackburn founded Dri-Eaz in 1980, after eight years of cleaning carpets.There was a cold flood in the winter of 1972 that started Blackburn’s journey on restorativedrying. He began to teach what he knew in 1978 and published The Guide to Water DamageRestoration in 1980. When seminar graduates began asking for drying equipment, Blackburnestablished Dri-Eaz. The company has since become an industry leader in drying technology,equipment and training.Once restorers drain or pump water out of a flooded building, the walls, carpets andfurniture remain saturated. To dry the building and its contents, restorers must move massivevolumes of air to cause evaporation, then dry the air as the moisture moves into it. One wayto dry the air is to move drier air into the premises and the saturated air out. However, after aflood, ambient air is often saturated as well, preventing drying. Wecontinue to look at other programs, but they don’tdo what we want like CADKEY does,” White added.Dri-Eaz is nearing completion of a “floodhouse” at itsCenter for Advanced restorative drying, a complete1,100 square-foot house with various types ofconstruction inside a flooding facility, which is used totrain restorative drying techniques.
