From the Editor2010MarchThe Annual Scientific Congress, which is the highlight of College activities, will be held in comingMay. Also, a number of scientific meetings focusing on various cardiac sub-specialties are beingorganized in the coming months. Members are encouraged to attend and to keep themselvesabreast with the advancement of cardiovascular medicine.When the Hong Kong Cardiological Society was formed in the late 1960s, one of its mainobjectives was to provide a mean to enable doctors working in the public sector then (government,subvented hospitals, university) to obtain sponsorship to attend professional meetings in the field ofcardiovascular medicine. The College has continued this mission since its inception.Over the years, guidelines for sponsorship have been revised to meet the requirements of publicinstitutes, and most important to be in-line with the prevalent Law of Hong Kong. The currentguideline is the result of extensive deliberation by the Council, and it appears in this issue asreminder.The College is sad to learn of the sudden demise of Dr. Chan Iu Kau, Fellow HKCC. Dr. Changraduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong in year 1974. He received histraining in internal medicine and cardiology in Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Subsequently, he wasawarded a scholarship for overseas training in cardiac rehabilitation, which was a subspecialty notmuch heard of in the early 1980s but later becomes an important service for cardiac patients. Hemoved to private practice in the mid-1980s. The College had sent condolence to his family.The College could not strive forward without active participation of its members. Yet, some membersare difficult to reach because they have changed their contact address. Please feel free tovoice your opinion and express your idea in the Newspaper by writing to the Editor. News l e t t e rGuidelines for granting sponsorship to attend meeting(s)The Council of Hong Kong College of Cardiology has adopted the following revised guidelines forgranting sponsorship to attend meeting(s), at the Council Meeting held on 17 January 2006. Therevised guidelines are listed as below:I. Prerequisite1. The Hong Kong College of Cardiology will consider sponsoring its members to attend meetingsprovided:a) Fund is available for such purpose; andb) The contents of the meeting is relevant to academic interest, or scientific value, orprofessional practice of cardiovascular medicine.2. The eligible members of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology include Honorary Fellow whowas Fellow of the College before his advancement, Distinguished Fellow, Fellow, Member, asdefined in the Memorandum & Articles of Association as well as By-Laws of the College. (Pleasealso note Section III.)3. The College will not sponsor its member to attend user meeting.4. The application for sponsorship should reach the Secretariat of the College at least two weeksbefore the beginning of the meeting.II. Frequency of SponsorshipFor meeting held locally in Hong Kong1. There is no restriction to the number of sponsorships granted to each individual member toattend local meetings in any capacity in one calendar year, whether the College is wholly orpartly, or not involved at all, in the meeting.For meeting held outside Hong KongMeeting in which the College is wholly or partly involved:2. There is no restriction to the number of sponsorships granted to each individual member toattend meetings held outside Hong Kong in any capacity in one calendar year.Meeting in which the College is not involved:3. The maximum number of sponsorship granted to each individual member to attend meetingoutside Hong Kong as audience, in each calendar year, is two.4. There is no restriction to the number of sponsorship granted to each individual member in eachcalendar year to attend meeting outside Hong Kong in active capacity such as organizer,faculty, chairman, speaker, or abstract presenter.III. Others1. Other categories of memberships not mentioned at item 2 of Prerequisite are also encouragedto participate in scientific meetings. Request of sponsorship, from members who have met all theother criteria stipulated in Prerequisite (other then item 2) will be considered for each applicationindividually.
