Polyurethanes are energy-efficient all-rounders. As well as help<strong>in</strong>g to save<br />
energy and costs, rigid polyurethane foams offer architects design freedom<br />
and create more liv<strong>in</strong>g space by enabl<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>ner construction elements. In<br />
housebuild<strong>in</strong>g, polyurethane is therefore used <strong>in</strong> many roof, wall and floor<br />
applications. Moreover, Elastopor ® and Elastopir ® rigid foams are used as<br />
the core material <strong>in</strong> metal-faced sandwich panels, for example as facade<br />
and roof elements <strong>in</strong> cold stores and <strong>in</strong>dustrial build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Thanks to their outstand<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>sulat<strong>in</strong>g properties, rigid polyurethane foams<br />
are used <strong>in</strong> many applications, not just <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs. They are to be found<br />
<strong>in</strong> almost all the world’s refrigerators and freezers, for <strong>in</strong>stance. In addition,<br />
they are used to <strong>in</strong>sulate hot water tanks and district heat<strong>in</strong>g pipes.<br />
Liv<strong>in</strong>g comfort can also be enhanced by the use of latent heat stores <strong>in</strong><br />
plastic microcapsules that can be <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> the plaster of build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
As temperatures rise, the waxy contents of the capsules melt, thereby<br />
stor<strong>in</strong>g the heat.<br />
Basotect ® , a flexible open-cell foamed plastic made from melam<strong>in</strong>e<br />
res<strong>in</strong> provides a pleasant quiet <strong>in</strong>door environment due to its high sound<br />
absorption capacity. In the construction sector, Basotect is also used to<br />
<strong>in</strong>sulate solar panels and boilers.<br />
Polyurethanes are not just used as <strong>in</strong>sulat<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>in</strong> the construction<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry: Elastocoast ® , an <strong>in</strong>novative solution for coastal protection based<br />
on polyurethane has been further developed by <strong>BASF</strong> researchers. The<br />
result is Elastopave ® , a polyurethane system that provides a stable, flexible<br />
and porous cover<strong>in</strong>g layer for surfaces such as sidewalks and cycle<br />
paths, park<strong>in</strong>g lots and schoolyards.<br />
