<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hickory</strong> Public Art Work Inventory March 20131. “The Story” by <strong>James</strong> <strong>Barnhill</strong> is a bronze sculpture depicting a mother reading to a child. It islocated at the front <strong>of</strong> the Patrick Beaver Library. It was dedicated in 1998 in honor <strong>of</strong> MurrayTate. PAC 1999.12. “The Tower <strong>of</strong> Miracles” by Mary Rose Carroll is a stone obelisk with metal bas reliefs. Thesculpture was commissioned for the millennium to commemorate the construction <strong>of</strong> anemergency polio hospital in 1944. The sculpture was dedicated as part <strong>of</strong> a three-day celebrationin 2000 that included a polio survivor’s reunion. PAC2000.2Page 1 <strong>of</strong> 7


3. “Pulling Sweet Potato Plants” by Ivey Hayes is an acrylic painting. It was purchased in 2001 andhangs in the Ridgeview Library. PAC 2001.34. “Boy and Girl” by Ivey Hayes is a watercolor. It was purchased in 2001 and hangs in theRidgeview Library. PAC 2001.45. “Ukama” by Godrey Kurari is a carved springstone sculpture that represents family unity andcommunity. The sculpture was purchased in 2002 and dedicated to the citizens <strong>of</strong> Ridgeview aspart <strong>of</strong> the dedication <strong>of</strong> the new Ridgeview Recreation Center. 6. “The Natural” by Gary Price is a bronze numbered edition sculpture <strong>of</strong> a small boy with abaseball glove. This sculpture was dedicated in 2003 as part <strong>of</strong> the dedication <strong>of</strong> the HighlandRecreation Center at Stanford Park. This sculpture was purchased through a private fund-raisingeffort and is dedicated to Danny Thompson, the former Parks and Recreation director. PAC2003.67. “Stone Souls Rising” by Julia Stout is a free form steel sculpture that currently is located at thePatrick Beaver Memorial Library. This sculpture was leased for a year and purchased by thePublic Art Commission in 2003. PAC 2003.7Page 3 <strong>of</strong> 7


8. “The Game” by Dean Curfman is a steel sphere, ten feet in diameter that depicts a segmentedsoccer ball. It is located at the Henry Fork Regional Soccer Facility and purchased through aprivate fund-raising effort and dedicated in 2004. PAC 2004.89. “Whisper Bench” by Jim Gallucci is a powder coated steel bench. It is currently located along thesidewalk between the Science Center and Patrick Beaver Library. 10. “Forever in Bloom” by Dean Curfman is a steel representational piece. It is located inside at <strong>City</strong>Hall. This sculpture was part <strong>of</strong> a temporary art exhibit at <strong>City</strong> Hall in 2005. PAC 2005.1011. “Flexeble” by Dean Curfman is an aluminum abstract piece. It is currently located outside <strong>of</strong><strong>City</strong> Hall. This sculpture was part <strong>of</strong> a temporary art exhibit at <strong>City</strong> Hall in 2005. 12. “Wheel <strong>of</strong> Time” by Dean Curfman is aluminum construction and was commissioned by the West<strong>Hickory</strong>/Westmont Neighborhood Association. It is located on Hwy 321 and 13 th Street SW. Itwas dedicated in 2006. PAC2006.1213. “Historic Mural” by Roger Cooke is a 25 X 35 mural painted on Union Square during the month<strong>of</strong> September 2006. PAC 2006.13Page 6 <strong>of</strong> 7


14. “Combative Black Man 2005” by Sharif Bey is a ceramic neckpiece. It was purchased by PeggyShuford and was donated to the <strong>City</strong> in honor <strong>of</strong> Sam and Illora Chambers in 2007. PAC 2007.14Page 7 <strong>of</strong> 7
