SPALDING'S ATHLETIC LIBRARY. 47between two circles (or through the middle circle of the threelobedeight) into two equal parts (B-B).The position of the body, balance leg, and skating foot beforethe change is similar in all respects to the outside forwardplain circle. The diagram shows accurately the correct shoulderpositions. When approaching the change, "sink"well on the skating knee and move balance foot infront, well pointed down; then, at the change backand over the line, the body well poised on bentskating leg and the arms at the change held as lowas possible. The balance leg is now thrown wellback, with opened knees (similar position to the insideforward circle). The balance leg is brought slowly forwardwhen about half way through inside forward circle. When the balance foot is moving forward gently, the shouldersmust rotate slowly, so as to be in the long axis at the change(see Diagram). To make the change easier to do, movebalance foot forward and backward as nearly as possible inthe line of the print, otherwise the serpentine is liable not tobe a uniform curve. (It is better to rock the body past anapparently motionless balance leg than to kick the balancefoot for power.)(5b) Forward, Inside Change to Outside. (The second half ofthefigure.)This figure is more difficult to skate properly than the changefrom outside to inside; the trouble is to get full roundedcurves.Begin as for the inside forward plain circle. The balancefoot is brought in front before the change and, both before andafter it, the skating knee is well bent. When on the point oftaking the outside forward curve, throw the body quickly tocenter, and at the same time bring the balance leg backwardand well across the print, to help hold out the curve. Keepthe shoulders flat and straighten up body directly after thechange, with head erect and facing over employed shoulder inthe direction of motion, body assuming at once correct position
