Live and LearnHousing Initiatives Improve Student Outlookby Jennifer A. Cline, writer/editor-One College AvenueWith the opening of DauphinHall in Fall 2010, PennsylvaniaCollege of Technology housesmore than 1,700 students on campus.Among them are 1,083 first-year students, most living away from home for the firsttime, encountering new roommates, newclass schedules and demands, and theweight of new responsibilities. The newness of the experience is muchas it was for college freshmen 50 years ago, except that utilitarian, two-bunk roomsand a communal bathroom at the end ofthe hall have been replaced on moderncampuses with apartment-style housing.Such was the choice at Penn Collegewhen it began offering on-campushousing in 1997. The housing is popular, and students appreciate the amenities:Each apartment has its own bathroom, kitchenette and living room. But the self-sufficiency of apartmentstyleliving minimizes the communitybuildingaspect that came naturally in the“dormitories” of old.Since Dauphin Hall is designed with“suite-style” housing, it offers a communalaspect that makes it a logical place tohouse first-year students, who havemore need for a guiding and supportivehand than many of their upperclassmancounterparts. The four-floor hall is laidout in pods of three to seven bedroomssharing a bathroom. Several pods share astudy room and large open commons areawith a community kitchen, large-screentelevision, couches and armchairs. Thecommons provides an ideal place to offerprograms for the students. With six residence halls now near oneanother on the west end of campus anda new built-in social hub in The CapitolEatery, a dining hall inside DauphinHall, the college designated Dauphin andneighboring Clinton, Delaware, Juniata,Lancaster and York halls as a gatedcommunity for first-year students calledRose Street Commons. Upperclassmen arehoused on the eastern side of campus inCampus View Apartments and The Villageat Penn College.Separating the groups resulted inhigher levels of satisfaction, recordrequests by returning students to stay oncampus a second year and significantlyfewer behavioral and judicial situationscampuswide.“I can count on two hands theproblems we had in Campus View and theVillage,” said Brian M. Johnson, directorof residence life, adding that even thoseproblems were minor.Part of the reason, he said, is thatthe older students are given a bit morefreedom. The other part is simply that theyare more mature as a group.“At Rose Street Commons, with all ourfirst-year programming in place, it allowedus to really help (students) throughthat transition, without conflicts ofupperclassmen intertwined,” Johnson said.Resident Assistants in Rose StreetCommons receive specialized trainingto support their first-year residents andprovide programming aimed at, ultimately, attaining academic success.“When you’re just targeting freshmen, you can provide more programs on basiccollege preparation,” said Elliott StricklandJr., chief student affairs officer.Resident Assistants arrange sessionson academic skill-building and plan socialevents designed for new students to get toknow one another. The design of Dauphin Hall is alsoconducive to developing “learningcommunities,” which have proventhemselves on many college and university“The goal is to … give thema sense of community andbelonging.”Students gather in commons areas in DauphinHall, an ideal place to socialize and provide botheducational and social sessions for residents.10 One College Avenue

campuses in recent years and launched atPenn College in 2010-11.“It’s a very simple concept,” Stricklandsaid. “You have students living togetherthat have the same major or sameinterests.”Made up of first-year students, thegroups are assigned a faculty mentor anda Resident Assistant from the school ormajor in which they are studying. Facultymentors offer a program once a month, centered around the students’ commonacademic interests. In the program’s first year, thecollege offered learning communitiesfor students in the School of HealthSciences, the School of Hospitality, automotive majors, and participants inthe Presidential Leadership Program. In its second year, the college willconcentrate on communities relatedto academics, dropping the leadershiplearning community and adding learningcommunities for aviation majors, theconstruction management major andinformation technology majors.“I try to do a blend of things that arefun, educational and meaningful forthem,” said Marie G. Smith, assistantprofessor of dental hygiene. Smith isfaculty mentor to the School of HealthSciences learning community. She planned bowling nights and Wiidance parties, as well as learning activitiessuch as tips for classroom success and CPRtraining.“The goal is to help students withacademic success,” Smith said. “And togive them a sense of community andbelonging.”First-year students in the School ofHealth Sciences have a unique challenge:Their grades in their first-year, generaleducation courses help determine whowill secure one of the limited seats in theirchosen major.Giving them a channel to interact withother Health Sciences students is helpful,Smith said, “so they don’t feel so isolated, like they’re alone struggling to get intotheir program.”Smith saw students feel more free tointeract with one another, as attendancegrew throughout the academic year.Still, isolation and academic anxietycan be felt by students in any major. JeffreyM. Januchowski, assistant professor ofautomotive technology and faculty mentorfor the automotive technology learningcommunity, arranged for representativesfrom Counseling Services and theAcademic Success Center, among others,to speak with students in his learningcommunity. He also planned off-campus trips to theAntique Automobile Club of America’sEastern Fall Meet in Hershey and to theNew York International Auto Show.Likewise, the hospitality managementlearning community incorporated tripsto a local trout farm, farmers market andchocolate shop.Faculty mentors point quickly to theResident Assistants who are there tolend a guiding hand to the students inthe learning communities, answeringquestions and offering the perspective of aveteran student sharing their major.“I help them plan activities; I’m a pieceof the puzzle, but they’re with them everyday,” Smith said.Januchowski said about half ofthe students living in the automotivetechnology learning community took partin the monthly activities.“Those who participated had a greattime,” he said. “They got to hang with theirpeers. … The real idea is to keep studentsinterested.”Keeping them interested and enablingthem to feel part of the college communityhelps to keep students from leaving afterthe first semester or the first year.“We’re trying to create intentionalprogramming that builds on academicsuccess,” Johnson said. “If we don’t do that,we’re not supporting the college’s academicmission.”While it is early to track, initialoutcomes indicate higher levels ofacademic success among students in thelearning communities. ■Web ExtraRead some of Smith’s tipsfor classroom successoca.pct.edu/LLA large lounge on the first floor of Dauphin Hall is amongcommunal spaces where students can socialize and staffcan offer programs.Students in the School of Health Scienceslearning community get to know eachother during a bowling outing.Photo courtesy of Marie g. smithFall 2011 11

Miller decided hewanted to try for the largest – an endowedscholarship – and he wanted to achieve itwithin a year.“I tried to be realistic with him,”Dietrich offered. “I told him he didn’t haveto accomplish it in just one year. Normally,we give people four to seven years to reachthe $25,000 threshold.”Still, Miller was determined. “I reallyfelt this had potential,” he said, notingGaris’ connections on campus in variousstudent organizations. After obtaining permission to proceedfrom the Garis family in late September,Miller began working toward the goal.“Once he got the ball rolling, he wasaround our office almost on a daily basis,”Dietrich noted. Some of the first funding for thescholarship arrived from Homecominginitiatives including registration feesTracy A. Garis, fourth from right, joins her Resident Assistant colleagueswelcoming students to campus at the start of the 2009-10 academic year.for the Homecoming Car Show andproceeds from the balloting process forthe Homecoming king and queen.A pivotal moment in the early days ofthe effort came when Miller was giventhe opportunity to speak to a gathering ofThe Pillar Society, a core group of PennCollege benefactors. His talk resulted ina $5,000 donation from a member and asignificant confidence boost to all involvedin the scholarship campaign.Progress continued with numerousstudent organizations conductingfundraisers, from T-shirt and candy salesto collection cans and concerts. Amongthe more unusual activities rallying fundswere a 24-hour rocking chair “Rock-a-Thon” and a “Cow Plop Bingo” conteststaged on the Madigan Library lawn withthe assistance of “contributing” bovines.Momentum was spurred at keyjunctures with challenges presentedby President Davie Jane Gilmour andmembers of the Penn College FoundationBoard of Directors, who promised tomatch certain fundraising levels withpersonal gifts to the cause.Throughout the year, the Garis familyreturned to campus to participate in someof the fundraising events. Their visits werefilled with both pride and pain.“My heart hurt because I wasn’tcoming to campus to see Tracy, so it wasvery difficult, but it was also joyous,”said Cheryl Garis. “I was so proud of her, imagining the impression she must’vehad on people. It made me feel so goodknowing how the students felt about her.Even people who didn’t know her werepitching in to help. So, it was an honor tosee what everyone was doing.”Ed Garis concurred: “I was so ecstaticseeing how hard everyone was working. So many times, I wanted to express mygratitude, but I was at a loss for words. Iwas deeply touched. It was a difficult year, but it was an amazing one, too.”The benefit that pushed the campaignover its goal was a Celebrity WaiterDinner, held in mid-April in Le Jeune ChefRestaurant on campus. their tables filled with fellow employees, students, and the Garis family and friends.Among the supporters were three groupsthat had played a significant role inTracy’s life at Penn College – ResidenceLife, Campus Crusade for Christ and theStudent American Dental Hygienists’Association.“I was really hopeful going into thatnight that we would take it over the top,”Dietrich recalled. “I felt there was a realpotential that people would be generousonce they were there, but the end resultreally blew me away when we werecounting the tips.”The evening brought in $3,546 in tips, pushing the campaign a couple thousanddollars over its goal one month ahead ofschedule.“It was an incredible relief,” Miller said.“I slept like a rock that night.”As they looked back on the year, bothMiller and Dietrich were struck by thecampaign’s camaraderie and sense ofcommunity.“It’s one of the most impressiveoutpourings I’ve seen,” Dietrich said. “Itwas amazing to see the sheer number ofpeople who got behind it to make a smallgift or organize an event or to buy a coupleof squares in Cow Plop Bingo. There weremany student organizations involved andmany people who had no direct ties toTracy. It had a totally different energy toit than when one gift is given to endowa scholarship. They both have the samefinancial impact on students who receivethe scholarships, but this had that grassroots, community effort to it.”Miller said he especially enjoyedgetting to know many of Tracy’s friendsand family and, through them, the feelingof getting to know Tracy, as well.“All the people who knew her weremy motivation to keep going, to keeppushing,” Miller said. “Tracy wasdefinitely someone I wish I had known, and in a way, I feel I got to know her.”Miller, who will serve as SGA presidentfor the 2011-12 academic year, said he ispleased Garis’ name will live on at PennCollege.“I always tried to explain to studentswho would ask, ‘How would this benefitme?’ and I’d tell them, ‘You’re helping toremember a student who went here, andyou’re helping other students to come here,as well,’” he said. The Tracy A. Who Was Tracy?Tracy A. Garis spent two short years (2008-10)at Penn College, but made a lasting impacton the campus community.Hailing from Hellertown, the dental hygienestudent spent her freshman year getting herbearings and then, according to her mother,Cheryl, “truly blossomed” in her sophomoreyear due to her role as a Resident Assistant.Residence Life Coordinator Kas A. Williamsworked closely with Garis and witnessed herdynamic connection with fellow students.“Tracy took the time and effort to form genuine friendshipswith the residents on her floor,” Williams said. “Tracy’sresidents were mainly first-year students to Penn College.Outside of class, Tracy was often seen on campus with herresidents. She was more than their Resident Assistant –she was a friend, confidant and helper. Tracy was a studentleader who gave of herself without expecting anything inreturn.”In Garis’ memory, Residence Life established an endof-the-yearaward in her name. The award honors aResident Assistant who develops outstanding communityrelationships on his or her assigned floor, as Garis did.“The most befitting way to honor her is to honor theresidents who live in our halls,” the award documentationstates.Garis also became a member of the Student AmericanDental Hygienists’ Association and Campus Crusade forChrist – both active organizations on the Penn Collegecampus. Had she returned for the 2010-11 academic year, she would have served as a Student Ambassador and likelymade an even greater impact.“Tracy was an inspiration in her short life,” said PennCollege President Davie Jane Gilmour prior to presentingGaris’ parents with her posthumous diploma atcommencement ceremonies in May 2011. “Her deathtouched many students, faculty and staff very deeply. …I cannot remember ever seeing so many students cometogether for a common purpose to honor one of their own.”-Cindy Davis MeixelGaris is among those honored with memorialbricks in the college’s Remembrance Garden.Fall 2011 15
