Movie Review:<br />
Bridge to Terabithia<br />

Bridge to Tarabithia begins as classic<br />
Walt Disney fare.<br />
It's the story of two lonely pre-adolescent<br />
children who make friends on<br />
the school bus and fi nd comfort in each<br />
other's company.<br />
It's a stretch to imagine that either<br />
of these two - both heart-breakingly<br />
cute and smart - could ever be considered<br />
losers, even by their cruel peers,<br />
but hey, it's just a movie.<br />
Josh Hutcherson as the boy who<br />
craves his father's attention, and Anna-<br />
Sophia Robb as the little girl next door,<br />
are both very appealing kids who will<br />
undoubtedly be sought after for other<br />
movies if they manage to avoid the curse<br />
of the child actor.<br />
A third actor, Jennifer Matichuk,<br />
playing the boy's little sister, is cute as<br />
a button, too.<br />
Anyway, the two kids explore the<br />
property at the back of their joint farmland<br />
and by swinging across the river on<br />
a rope, they fi nd an old tree fort (so far<br />
this is every kid's fantasy) and imagine<br />
a world of their own where there are no<br />
bullies or chores or mean teachers.<br />
Th e girl, Leslie, is the more imaginative<br />
of the two and she names their<br />

special place Terabithia.<br />
Although they do imagine some<br />
pretty frightening monsters and some<br />
helpful trolls and fl ying soldiers, this<br />
movie is not the special eff ects extravaganza<br />
we are used to seeing in movies<br />
like Lord of the Ring.<br />
In fact, the special eff ects play a<br />
minor role in the movie, which is more<br />
about kids coping with bad things that<br />
happen.<br />
Right in the middle of the movie,<br />
something really unexpected and really<br />
bad happens.<br />
I assume this is why the movie is<br />
rated Parental Guidance, as some young<br />
children could be aff ected by the tragedy<br />
that affl icts one of the main characters. I<br />
certainly couldn't help crying.<br />
Th e movie seems to take a darker<br />
turn at this point, and the remainder of<br />
the story is about guilt, sorrow and redemption.<br />
Kids expecting a real knock<br />
'em, sock 'em movie with monsters and<br />
superheroes will be disappointed.<br />
On the bright side, it does have a<br />
happy ending as the power of Terabithia<br />
triumphs over all.<br />
