FSC - a global system 

Nearly 150 million hectares of forest worldwide are managed 

according to FSC st<strong>and</strong>ards in April <strong>2012</strong>. 

With certified forests in 80 countries on 5 continents, FSC is the 

leading st<strong>and</strong>ard for responsible certification. 

Small <strong>and</strong> community producers manage 24% of all FSC Forest 

Management certificates: 7% of all FSC certified area worldwide. 

In April <strong>2012</strong> there were 1114 FM Certificates in the FSC system, 

including 414 Group Certificates, representing around 250,000 group 

members, the majority of which are small <strong>and</strong> community producers.

Over 800 members from more than 80 countries, 

an equal representation of social, economic, <strong>and</strong> 

environmental interests, work through consensus 

to lead FSC. 

FSC is the world’s leading forest certification 

scheme with 45 national representations. 

FSC forest management certificates have been 

issued in 80 countries; FSC chain of custody 

certificates have been issued in 105 countries. 

27 certification bodies worldwide are accredited 

<strong>and</strong> working to audit manufacturers, traders, forestry 

operations, printers <strong>and</strong> many more for FSC.

FSC certified forest area growth 

The FSC certified forest area in Russia neared the 30 million hectare 

milestone in April <strong>2012</strong>, up from 20 million hectares in 2008. 

FSC certified forest area increased significantly in Canada, from 28,5 

million hectares in January 2009 to 44 million hectares in April <strong>2012</strong>. 

FSC certification in China is taking off, with <strong>2012</strong> Chain of Custody 

certificates currently issued, more than double the number of certificates 

issued in 2010.

FSC CoC certification verifies material from FSC 

certified forests through the production process 

- from the forest through processing companies, 

manufacturing, to the consumer. 

CoC certificates enable the FSC label to provide 

the link between responsible production <strong>and</strong> 

consumption. 

23,038 FSC CoC certificates have been issued in 

105 countries as of April <strong>2012</strong>. 

FSC CoC certification grew more than 100% since 

2008, from 10,119 to 23,038.

Strong commitment to FSC certified packaging 



“Since 2007, L’Oréal has been committed to a strict 

policy of forestry certification for its paper <strong>and</strong> cardboard 

packaging through the active promotion of FSC (Forest 

Stewardship Council) certification... Today, more than 

90% of our cardboard boxes are certified, over half by the

Certification in forest <strong>and</strong> wood processing plays a 

key role in fighting violations of workers’ rights in 

subcontracting.

Results of the FSC Global <strong>Market</strong> Survey 2011 

The survey was developed <strong>and</strong> sent out by the Center for Evaluation 

<strong>and</strong> Methods at the University of Bonn, Germany in 15 languages <strong>and</strong> 

FSC received responses from 5032 FSC certificate holders in 109 

countries. This included both Chain of Custody (CoC) <strong>and</strong> Forest 

Management (FM) certificate holders.
