Dear Friends of St. Aemilian-Lakeside:
As we celebrated our 160th anniversary, 2010
certainly was a banner year for St. Aemilian-
Lakeside. We have come a long way since our
forerunner orphanages opened in 1850, and we
were proud to share the story of our history and
accomplishments throughout the year.
Four major events fostered the cultivation of new
stakeholders and provided fun-filled opportunities
to solidify our relationships with existing friends and
supporters. The overall theme was Grow Hope,
honoring the traditions of our past and highlighting
our advancements into the future.
The kickoff event was a Community Advocacy
Breakfast, featuring motivational speaker Bob
home to home as a youngster and grew up to
head the Hearst Corporation. With Portia Young,
WISN-TV newscaster as our master of ceremonies,
this April event brought together an array of
attendees to honor foster families for the service
they provide to children and the community.
The second event was an Employee Appreciation
evening, held in July at the beautiful Sharon Lynne
Wilson Center for the Arts. Former and current
staff and board members gathered to solidify
relationships and celebrate the services and
achievements of St. Aemilian-Lakeside.
Our 22nd Annual Golf Outing, held in August at the
Wisconsin Country Club, was a big success. A total
of 135 individuals gathered on a beautiful sunny day
to enjoy a round of golf and support the children
and families in our care. We raised about $48,000
to support young people in Independent Living
Through Art and
Trauma Informed Care
The year 2010 marked a concerted effort by St. Aemilian-Lakeside and its
subsidiary Integrated Family Services to incorporate what is known as trauma
informed care into all its services. Based in neuroscience, trauma informed care
acknowledges the effects trauma such as abuse and neglect have on individuals
and creates therapeutic interventions to mitigate those effects.
A highlight of these efforts was entering into what ultimately will be 18 months
of training by a nationally known expert, Dr. Bruce Perry of the ChildTrauma
Academy in Houston, to become agency certified in what is called the
neurosequential model of therapeutics (NMT). With an understanding that
the brain develops in stages and that trauma suffered at different times in
development affects different behaviors, NMT maps when trauma occurred and
recommends treatment interventions such as sensory activities, relationshipbuilding,
and other things that promote regulation and healing.
Many interventions that have been used with people struggling with trauma
have focused on the cognitive or upper parts of the brain. Trauma informed
interventions address the lower parts of the brain, where stress responses are
rooted. Rhythmic and repetitive activities such as drumming, dancing, rocking in
a rocker, can decrease the stress response. The brain settles down and children
learn to calm themselves so that they can take in what is needed to heal.
This focus on trauma informed care, which is used across all our services, likely
played a role in impressive improved outcomes for 2010. We saw a 42% decrease
in the number of serious incidents reported across all our programs. These include
calls to Child Protective Services, emergency room or urgent care visits, police
calls, psychiatric hospitalizations and reports we are required to make to the state.
This is a particularly noteworthy decrease as it comes at a time when the number
of clients has increased.
In our residential program, we also saw a 22% decrease from 2009 in the number
of restraints, and property damage incidents that resulted from children acting out
in anger and frustration dropped 50%.
The brain settles down and children learn to calm themselves
so that they can take in what is needed to heal.
In 2010, children’s art was threaded through all our anniversary events. Children
in our care were guided by a group of volunteer professional artists and other
community members who have a love of art and a wish to reach out to children.
Together, they created an array of artwork that showcased the children’s talents
while providing art therapy and nurturing social interaction and self-esteem. And fun!
Art therapy and expressive art are a key part of our trauma informed care initiative.
We have found that while engaging in the rhythmic, repetitive activities involved in
producing various different kinds of art, the children not only have a great time, but
their behavior also is positively affected.
Children gathered at various events several times throughout the year to produce
artwork that was appropriate to their different ages and skill levels. The works
ranged from painted flower pots and “marble art,” crafted from rolling paint-covered
marbles onto paper, to beautiful creative paintings, colorful baskets and jewelry.
The pieces were displayed at two Gallery Nights in Milwaukee, in July at the Italian
Community Center and October at Live Artists Studio in Walker’s Point. A silent
auction of the best creations was held at the Grow Hope Celebration, with proceeds
funding future art therapy endeavors.
Tables at the celebration were graced by centerpieces called Pentakis-Dodekaeder
stars, the brainchild of Albin Erhart, the father of an adopted son served by
St. Aemilian-Lakeside. From the Greek penta, meaning five, and dodeka, meaning
12, the stars have 60 surfaces and were folded and assembled without glue.
The children we serve created the vibrant, colorful artwork on the star surfaces.
Achievements
6 | 2010 ST. AEMILIAN-LAKESIDE ANNUAL REPORT
Our achievements
in 2010 were numerous, across all our services.
Included are just some of our highlights.
n A new service line, Family Preservation
Services, was created by St. Aemilian-Lakeside
to serve children and families through the Bureau
of Milwaukee Child Welfare. Using a streamlined,
in-home model that focuses on assessment
and employs best practices to ensure safety,
Family Preservation’s goals are family unification,
promoting well-being and keeping families together.
n Nancy Brooks-Lewis and Jesse Lewis, who
adopted four treatment foster children through
St. Aemilian-Lakeside, were one of four families
chosen by the State Department of Children and
Families to receive a 2010 Governor’s Outstanding
Adoptive Parent Award. The award recognizes
adoptive parents who have gone above and
beyond in their efforts to improve the lives of
children and families in Wisconsin.
n Misty Barnhill, program supervisor at Friendships
Unlimited in Waukesha, was awarded the
National Alliance on Mental Illness’ (NAMI)
Consumer Advocate of the Year Award from
NAMI of Waukesha County. The award noted
she exemplifies self-determination, resilience,
courage and tenacity in her mental health recovery
journey and recognized her accomplishments by
living independently, obtaining employment and
volunteering in the community, among
other things.
n With support from Spring City Corner Clubhouse,
66% of its active members were either employed,
volunteering or going to school in 2010. The
Clubhouse, based on a workday model, helps
individuals who are socially and vocationally
disabled by mental illness achieve the confidence
and skills needed to lead vocationally productive
and socially satisfying lives.
n Six staff members at Friendships Unlimited
in Waukesha were certified by the state as peer
support specialists, people experiencing mental
illness themselves who help others with similar
concerns. All completed extensive training before
taking the certification exam, which is part of
a process that was instituted by the state of
Wisconsin in January 2010.
n A webcast by Sara Daniel, coordinator of
St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s school based services,
was featured on the state Department of Public
Instruction’s website in a section focusing on
trauma-sensitive schools.
n St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s residential program
began employing an array of therapeutic
interventions that are based on research that has
shown that trauma affects brain development and
that patterned, rhythmic and repetitive activities
can soothe and calm traumatized children and
actually alter their brain structure as well as
their behavior. The activities include animal-
assisted therapy, a martial arts program that
stresses self-control and responsibility, yoga
and art therapy including visual arts, dance
and percussion activities.
n The Youth Moving On (YMO) program
expanded to provide Milwaukee-area
apartments to 20 young adults who formerly
were in the foster care system. Of the 20
apartments, seven are for single parents
with children. YMO provides apartments and
18 months of supportive services to young
people ages 18-24 who are at risk of being
homeless.
n Several young people from SAL’s
Supportive Permanent Housing program
moved into a new apartment building in July
of 2010. The building, on 31st and Wells
Streets, allows the young people to have their
own one-bedroom apartments. Youth in this
program are at risk of being homeless and
have mental health concerns.
n SAL went live in April with a new website,
with a new look and feel and several
interactive features. For the first time, the
annual report was offered online.
n Representatives of St. Aemilian-Lakeside
testified in Madison in favor of a Senate bill
that would extend support for foster youth to
age 21 and at a Senate Education Committee
public hearing on a bill calling for the
reduction of seclusion and restraint in schools.
n The use of physical interventions decreased
significantly in programs where restraints
may occur. And its low rate of injuries during
restraints made St. Aemilian-Lakeside a top
performer in the nation in the Alliance for
Children and Families Benchmarking Initiative,
which involved 65 similar agencies.
Subsidiaries: Capitol West Academy (CWA)
and Integrated Family Services (IFS)
n CWA held its first-ever eighth-grade graduation in spring, with 18 students
participating in a ceremony at Mt. Mary College. The charter school opened in
the 2004-05 school year serving 30 children in grades K5 through third.
n CWA won statewide and national character awards for its “Passport to
Success” initiative, which fosters communication between parents and the
school as well as nurturing academics and character.
n CWA had a successful summer school session in which 90 children in
grades K4 through eight received academic instruction, including intensive
one-on-one reading instruction from Cardinal Stritch University master’s
degree students, and a creative array of enrichment activities.
n A new website was created for CWA, featuring a colorful look and several
features designed to increase interaction with parents and volunteers.
n For the second year in a row, Diane’s Dictionaries, a program of the
Elmbrook Rotary Club that promotes literacy, provided regular and picture
dictionaries for children at Capitol West Academy. The program aims to help
students increase their vocabulary and their interest in reading and assist with
homework assignments.
n Integrated Family Services implemented a registered-nurse initiative in
collaboration with the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare to support the
improvement of health care outcomes for children under the age of three and
medically needy who are placed in out of home care.
n IFS moved to a new location to facilitate integration of its Ongoing Case
Management program, Safety Services program, and St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s
Family Preservation and Caregiver Support programs.
n IFS provided Ongoing Case Management services to 728 families and
achieved permanency for 459 children and Safety Services to 341 families.
Paul
Musician Paul Kuhn has an impressive resume.
This accomplished guitarist and violinist has
played a sold-out folk-rock gig at
Carnegie Hall and opened for the
likes of Sheryl Crow, Barenaked
Ladies, War, and Warren Zevon,
among others. He did a master
class with Daryl Stuermer, guitarist
and he played an instrument he
created and patented called a
cellocaster on the title track to the
8 | 2010 ST. AEMILIAN-LAKESIDE ANNUAL REPORT
Talented musician draws strength
at Spring City Corner Clubhouse
These are the high points. But
Paul, who is 43 years old, was diagnosed with
bipolar disorder in 2000, and life got a lot more
complicated. While continuing to land sometimes
stupendous gigs from time to time, including
Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in 2006 with his friend and
colleague Dan Bern, “There was a lot of dead air
in there,” Paul said with a chuckle.
After college at Georgetown University, Paul
moved to Aspen, Colo., where he studied audio
engineering at the Aspen Music Festival. He
and a friend started a band that grew to be the
town’s favorite, and they played Sunday nights for
two years in a small club. While in Colorado, he
opened for several major acts, and during the day
he operated a Fed Ex delivery business.
But then, he said, “things came to a screeching
halt.” His mental illness got the best of him and
the business fell apart, the band broke up, and
Paul moved back to Milwaukee to be near his
parents. He has been hospitalized several
times and has felt at times that life is just not
worth living.
Then he learned about Spring City Corner
Clubhouse in Waukesha. The concept of a social/
vocational rehabilitation program for adults living
with mental illness interested him. He started
attending, liked the feeling of camaraderie and
made some friends.
“It gave me a place to go,” said Paul. “For eight
years I would hide between gigs. And this place
has been a great support for me.”
Linda Cole, who runs the Clubhouse, said
completing structured tasks, focusing on moving
forward, and seeing other clients succeed really
helped Paul. He has played for Thanksgiving and
summer Clubhouse parties and even has spoken
publicly at a local Rotary meeting about the
Clubhouse and what it has to offer.
“I tell people they shouldn’t be afraid to ask for
help. It’s OK to talk about it (mental illness), to
reach out and get help, because you’re not alone.”
For Paul, the Clubhouse was a great addition to
therapy, and he likes that it gave him, “face time
with people, in addition to the time on the Internet
or the phone.”
He has an agent, is working on a new album, and
is now landing more gigs. He recently learned that
he will be the fiddle player in the Hank Williams
musical "Lost Highway" in Gettysburg, Pa.
But the cellocaster, a cross between a guitar and
a violin that can be played at the chin with a bow
or strummed at the waist, is his baby. Although he
smilingly calls it “my pie in the sky,” he has some
pretty good connections in the music publishing
industry and to a major guitar manufacturer,
and he hopes to be able to get the instrument
produced in quantity.
But Paul understands that staying grounded is
important, and the Clubhouse helped him do so.
“This is a great program run by wonderful people
for people in need.” Then he smiles and adds,
“And it’s helped me to come out of my shell.”
Princess
Princess Shealy is only 25 years old, but already
she has endured homelessness, domestic abuse,
trying to raise two young daughters alone and
struggling to address her depression.
“It’s difficult out there,”
said Princess, who grew
up in foster care after
her mother committed
suicide when she was 3
years old. “Life is not a
game.”
Luckily, Princess learned
how to reach out and
ask for help. She is in
St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s
18-month housing and
life-skills program for
former foster kids called
Youth Moving On (YMO). Through YMO, she sees
case manager Christine Woods weekly and, with
her help and encouragement, has been able to save
some money, is now in a medical program at MATC,
and her two little girls are doing well.
“YMO gives me the opportunity to raise my kids
easier and in a safe environment,” Princess said.
“And Christine keeps me motivated and gives me
structure … She makes sure I do what I need to do
– and if not, she’ll be on me!”
Princess credits her second foster mother, who had
six children of her own when she opened her home
to a troubled 12 year old, with stressing education
and encouraging her to never lose sight of hope.
The woman provided her, she said, with the
“courage to go out and learn.”
Princess always worked as a teenager, from baby
sitting to jobs at fast food restaurants and attended
a two-year college for a time. But her mother’s
suicide weighed on her.
Perhaps because of her troubled past, as she grew
older things were not smooth for Princess. She got
involved in an abusive relationship, left Wisconsin
twice and lived in the south for a time.
Focus on hope keeps
young woman moving forward
Now the mother of Damaliya, 4, and Anielah, 1, and
in great part because of her commitment to provide
a better life for her girls, she returned to Wisconsin
in early 2010, living for a time in a homeless shelter.
She had been involved a few years back in a St.
Aemilian-Lakeside program for former foster youth
called Youth Transitioning to Adulthood Scholars.
That program connected her with resources,
provided her with mentoring and support and
encouraged education and employment. Her
counselor stayed in touch with Princess while
she was out of state and ultimately helped her
get into YMO.
YMO has provided Princess with a two-bedroom
apartment for her and her daughters and with
services focused on finding and keeping a job,
learning to manage money and how to live
successfully day to day.
Princess is involved in a work-study program
through MATC supporting children who have
incarcerated family members. She hopes one day
to become a nurse. But if that doesn’t work out,
she said she knows she has other talents and has
learned how to access community resources.
“I know you have to crawl before you can walk and
that I have to take it one day at a time.”
The hardest part of all her past experiences,
Princess said, was wanting never to leave a home
filled with love and support. “I wished my foster
mother and other people who supported me could
hold my hand and lead me all the way.
"But I learned the reality is that I can’t gain hope if I
Mike
Dana Fry
Mike and his family were the first Dana Fry worked
with when she became a St. Aemilian-Lakeside care
coordinator, working in Wraparound Milwaukee’s
REACH program.
He was 16 and in trouble.
He was not living at home
because he had kicked his
mother in the stomach and
she was afraid of him. He
was involved in the criminal
justice system because of an
incident in which a child was
hurt, even though he was
not directly responsible for
the injury.
He could barely make it to
11 a.m. in school without
being kicked out for cussing,
throwing things or attacking other kids. And he had
a pregnant girlfriend.
Mike was the youngest of five children with no
father in the picture. He was hurt and angry, and the
only way he knew how to express his feelings was
to act out.
By the time Mike left the program at age 18, Dana
was sad to see him go because he had become
such a responsible and engaging young man. At his
initiative, she has maintained contact with him ever
since. What happened?
Through the voluntary program that brings
community resources together Dana came up with
a plan with Mike and his family that basically asked
them if they wanted things to change and how they
all could support each other to achieve that change.
“He really got an opportunity to turn himself around,”
Dana said. Mike’s keys to success included
medication, psychotherapy, weekly meetings with
Dana, and a professional crisis stabilizer who went
to school with Mike, sat beside him, and helped him
de-escalate when he was about to erupt.
10 | 2010 ST. AEMILIAN-LAKESIDE ANNUAL REPORT
With help, troubled teen turns himself around
“There were a lot of meetings at school and a
lot of trying to encourage him to stay in school,”
Dana said. “The big focus in his therapy was anger
control, learning that there are better ways to cope.”
Success came, Dana said, when “we got everybody
on the same page, particularly when we got
everybody at school to understand where he was
coming from. And the crisis stabilizer was a big
help.” Not only did he help Mike at school, where
Mike liked to project a thug image, he was “a huge
role model; he showed a positive image of what it’s
like to be a black man,” Dana said.
In therapy, Mike realized the abandonment he felt
when his dad left the family when he was very
young. He grew to understand why his father left
and to forgive him. When Mike’s father contacted
him a few years later, Mike was more than excited
and now works hard to be a nurturing father to his
own son, who Mike adores.
Because Mike followed a judicial order and stayed
out of trouble for a year, his record was cleared,
paving the way for him to make a new start.
Dana laughs when she remembers how no one
thought Mike would even graduate from high
school when she first started working with him. His
behavior was a big challenge and his troubles were
daunting. By his senior year Mike was going to the
prom, school dances, and he proudly invited her to
his graduation. Last December, Dana got a call from
Mike letting her know he is in the Job Corps.
Mike changed, Dana said, when he learned how to
control his emotions, “and when he changed how
he thought of himself. ... He always says, ‘You’ve
changed my life.’ I tell him it wasn’t me, it was him.
“I cried when he left the program. He’s such a good
kid, and this makes you know this process works. I
went into social work because I wanted to make a
difference in lives.
“And if you can touch one person like this, it’s worth it.”
Danny Teamwork,
Danny is 16, but because
of his developmental
issues he functions more
like a 6-year-old. His life
has been tough since he
was very young, having
suffered abuse and neglect.
Eventually, a termination
of parental rights was
issued and his grandmother
adopted him.
But things did not
miraculously get better.
Danny had severe
anger issues and would
physically lash out and beat
his grandmother. Because
of the risk to her safety, and
his own self-harm, he was
removed by a court order
and assigned to Integrated
Family Services, with Bob
Themmes his ongoing case
manager. Because Danny’s
issues were so severe, he
was placed in St. Aemilian-
Lakeside’s residential program for 90 days. Only
then did things really begin to change.
While in residential, Danny worked with child and
family therapist Chris Kangas and occupational
therapist Deb Buchanan. Incorporating trauma
informed care, rhythmic and repetitive activities
were used to help calm and soothe the teenager.
Chris worked intensely with Danny as well as with
St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s residential counselors and
the staff of the on-site Transitions Therapeutic
School. And Chris had weekly sessions with
Danny’s grandmother.
Danny’s self-injuring was a big issue, Chris said.
He liked the attention he would get when sent to a
hospital. While as St. Aemilian-Lakeside, incidents
of self-harm diminished greatly.
“We taught him to be safe and to help him transition
back home,” Chris said. Critical was everyone
sending the same messages, he said.
caring, consistency
pave the way for a better future
Danny eventually was able to go back home and
return to his special education high school class.
He sees a therapist weekly, a professional crisis
stabilizer up to 10 hours a week, and he continues
with occupational therapy at school.
Danny is still under court supervision and Bob
continues to monitor the situation and gets updates
on how he is doing. For several months, the
youth who had a long history of aggression and
an inability to control his anger had no behavioral
disturbances at school or in the home.
“That really was remarkable considering what he
was like before,” Bob said. “I attribute that to the
work done at St. Aemilian’s.”
Chris attributes a large part of Danny’s success to
his grandmother embracing the tenets of trauma
informed care as well as her ability to manage her
expectations about what could and could not be
accomplished, to understand and process her own
mistakes, and to focus on Danny’s strengths. His
involvement in Special Olympics also helps. The
physical activity gives him an outlet for his energy,
Chris said, and helps build self-esteem.
Danny will always need some kind of supportive
services, Chris said. “What he learned here will help
his success, but it does need to be reinforced to
help him navigate the rest of his life.”
Bob credits Chris with much of the teenager’s
success. “He really builds nice connections with
kids,” Bob said. “He’s very honest and sincere, and
to me that really makes a difference. … I’ve never
seen such a dramatic turnaround in my time as an
ongoing case manager.”
Chris modestly gives Danny much of the credit.
“I was really proud of him. He had many issues. We
worked a lot on safety, controlling his anger, and on
his relationships at home and at school. He and his
grandmother worked hard, and she was very willing
to learn, and now he is in a much better place.”
2010 ST. AEMILIAN-LAKESIDE ANNUAL REPORT | 11
Dear Friends and Supporters:
St. Aemilian-Lakeside’s 160th anniversary year
afforded a wonderful opportunity for us to increase
our awareness in the community, which is critical
to our ongoing efforts to support children, adults
and families who face numerous serious challenges
in their lives. As a non-profit human
services agency, we rely on the generous
support from southeastern Wisconsin’s
individual and business communities to
help us achieve our mission. We remain
convinced that, as more of you learn
about us, the services we provide and
our individual success stories, you will
become part of our extended family of
friends and supporters.
A continuing theme throughout our
anniversary year was art therapy. A children’s
art project spanning the entire year, led by a
dedicated group of community artists and business
professionals, produced artwork and performances
that allowed children in our care to express their
creativity while engaging in activities that promote
hope and healing.
We also secured the services of Express Yourself
Milwaukee, a professional artists group that works
with children throughout the area. With funding, we
hope to be able to purchase supplies and continue
activities such as these, which children who have
suffered trauma such as abuse and neglect so
enjoy and which can make meaningful differences
in their lives.
But there are many other activities throughout
St. Aemilian-Lakeside that are in need of support.
12 | 2010 ST. AEMILIAN-LAKESIDE ANNUAL REPORT
Our Independent Living Services area, which works
with youth aging out of foster care, has a continued
need to diversify its funding. Thanks to start-up
support from the St. Aemilian-Lakeside Foundation,
which invests in innovative and underfunded needs,
we started three programs to support this population
of young people who must leave foster care upon
turning 18.
The work is ongoing, and our consistent and
thoughtful commitment to these young adults is part
of our mission to “keep our promise” and support
their successful transition to adulthood.
We invite you to scan our website, www.st-al-org, to
learn more about the multiple services we provide.
We hope that as you understand more about the
assistance we provide to so many individuals in
need, you too will find something that resonates with
you, touches your heart and which you will want to
support. We remain committed to providing the most
innovative, high-quality care, and with your backing,
we will continue to do so — as long and as widely
as possible. With a track record of 160 years, I hope
we have proven to be capable and deserving!
The children’s art project was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board,
with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Grants provide needed funding for
two critical programs
St. Aemilian-Lakeside was proud to secure two three-year
grants totaling $450,000 from Milwaukee Brighter Futures, a
coalition of organizations that develops strategies to prevent
child abuse and neglect, inspire greater hope for youth, build
stronger families and create better neighborhoods. More than
80 participating organizations promote health, safety and
self-sufficiency for youth, families and neighborhoods.
The Brighter Futures grants fund two St. Aemilian-Lakeside
services, Caregiver Support and the Youth Transitioning
to Adulthood (YTA) Scholars program.
Caregiver Support provides the relative caregivers of
children in court-ordered kinship care with a variety of
supportive services to enhance their ability to meet the
children’s needs. The program aims to increase placement
stability, facilitate permanence, ensure that the mental health
service needs of children and caregivers are met, advocate
Expenses by Services
for children in schools, and ensue that children in kinship
care are safe from abuse, neglect, and marginal care. The
services are kinship/parent driven and clinical in nature. The
Brighter Futures grant enables us to provide more training
and support to the kinship caregivers we serve.
YTA Scholars provides long-term support and guidance
to young adults ages 18-24 who are exiting or have exited
foster care. These youth are at high risk for homelessness,
mismanagement of mental illness, unemployment, physical
and sexual victimization, domestic violence, alcohol and drug
abuse and incarceration. Working with a YTA case manager,
the program helps them transition successfully to adulthood
by securing safe housing, employment or educational and
vocational training, and remaining free of contact with
the criminal justice system. The YTA counselor serves as
a cheerleader, mentor, surrogate parent, teacher and a
coordinator of community resources. The Brighter Futures
grant funding strengthens our ability to do outreach and
group activities with program participants.
