go so far as to prevent <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> such projects. 160 This evaluation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Russian position with respect to <strong>the</strong> transportation <strong>of</strong> Caspian energy<br />

resources through Georgia was confirmed during <strong>the</strong> Russian-Georgian war<br />

in August 2008. Russian aviation bombed <strong>the</strong> pipelines that pass through<br />

Georgia 161 which are located far from South Ossetia, <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> which<br />

was supposedly <strong>the</strong> reason for <strong>the</strong> invasion. This cast doubt not only on <strong>the</strong><br />

security <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> transportation corridor via which pipelines pass through<br />

Georgian territory, 162 but also increased <strong>the</strong> danger <strong>of</strong> Azerbaijan losing its<br />

economic independence. 163 Fortunately, it did not take long to restore<br />

confidence in transporting energy resources through Georgia. 164 The fact that<br />

Moscow was unable to realize its goal <strong>of</strong> establishing control over <strong>the</strong>se<br />

pipelines by military means, 165 <strong>and</strong> that it could not fully monopolize <strong>the</strong><br />

transportation routes <strong>of</strong> energy resources from <strong>the</strong> former Soviet Union to<br />

<strong>the</strong> West, prompted Americans <strong>and</strong> Europeans to step up <strong>the</strong>ir efforts even<br />
