SOLVIN AWARD FOR
PVC INNOVATION 2010
Demonstrations of
a limitless imagination
innovative projects
Innovation has been the cornerstone of this
fourth edition of the SolVin Award and lived up
to all expectations by continuing the tradition of
technological development which began in 1932
with the manufacture of the first plastic pipe.
Then in 1946 vinyl revolutionised the music
industry and in 1954 the introduction of PVC
profile window frames significantly improved the
thermal insulation of buildings.
In 2010, 141 projects competed for the innovation
prize, giving us confidence that the next
generation is ready to continue our work. I would
like to stress the importance of the Vinyloop ®
initiative for the way PVC is currently used and its
rehabilitation as a sustainable material.
Together, we have all contributed to the success
of the voluntary undertaking known as Vinyl 2010.
The result is the recycling of 200,000 tonnes a
year of PVC otherwise at the end of its life and
this is confidently expected to reach 240,000
tonnes in 2010. But also of note is the reduction,
currently estimated at 50%, in the use of lead
stabilisers, the total withdrawal of cadmium
stabilisers and significant reduction in the CO2 emissions from our factories.
We are convinced that the key to our future lies in
sustainability. It is up to us now to set the targets
for 2020.
As far as SolVin is concerned, I am pleased to be
able to tell you now what these are. We intend to
achieve a 20% reduction in all the following areas :
• Energy consumption
• Logistics’ impact
• Greenhouse gas emissions
• Discharges into the atmosphere and into water.
These are our undertakings, which will benefit the
entire production chain downstream. But without
you, the processors, the additive suppliers, the
equipment manufacturers, the manufacturers of
finished products, we won’t achieve anything.
This is why I must pay tribute here to the 141
innovative projects submitted for the SolVin
Award. Whether prize winners or not, they are
testimony to the dynamism and commitment
of the sector to respond to the global challenge
of making PVC a major player in the field of
sustainable development.
Please accept our thanks !
The European market for stretched ceiling
applications requires materials with good fire
reaction and medium smoke emission (BS2D0).
For CE labeling according to the NF EN 14716
standard, the EN 13501-1 standard for measuring
fire reaction and smoke emission considers 3
different aspects for classifying the material: heat,
smoke and dripping. As the smoke density is the
main cause for killing people in the case of fire,
our aim has been to improve the current state
of the art performance of the materials used for
stretched ceilings. Using the right combination of a
new formulation and our calendaring process, we
have developed and produced new plasticised PVC
films with Bs1d0 classification, which means the
best smoke density classification achievable with
plastic films.
energeto ® is a window without a metallic thermal
bridge in the frame-sash construction. The system
boasts high heat insulation values in all versions
and profile depths. This contributes actively to the
reduction of CO 2 , the saving of heating costs and
consequently to environmental protection. Moreover
energeto ® combines outstanding technology with
an appealing design. The insulation properties of
the metal-free window obtained by bonding window
sash with the insulating glass pane as well as by
replacing the steel reinforcement by fiber-glass
reinforced plastic strips have been further improved
by foaming the profile chambers with special
polyurethane foam. By this means, energeto ® now
reaches unprecedented insulation Uw-values of
0.61 W/m²k.
“vip-W” pvc window
“VIP-W” is a completely new technology in PVCwindow
production. Thermal insulation is increased
by means of vacuum and additional heat radiant
barriers. Compared to existing PVC window profile
systems the same or even a better insulation can
be reached with a smaller external dimension, less
weight and a smaller cost. “VIP-W” windows are
100 % recyclable.
pvc tactile footway for blind and visually impaired
people
This simple system, having only two basic codes,
makes it easy to identify the footway, turns, changes
in direction, warning lines. It provides the foot with
a clear tactile perception which is hard to ignore,
transmitting a constant warning and sense of alert
thanks to the specially designed height and radius
of the pattern. Based on a limited number of clear
design principles (universality of signs, safety,
durability), this product can be used in a very wide
range of applications, both outdoors and indoors.
Footways made with this system allow blind and
visually impaired people to improve their autonomy
and mobility by actively using the tactile information
provided by the paving to their feet and/or long
cane. This system further helps visually impaired
people by means of colour contrasts between the
footway and the surrounding paving.
comparable to those of traditional liquid stabilisers,
in terms of heat stability, transparency, colour
spiral hose made of pvc compound highly resistant
to chlorinated components and water
This invention concerns the formulation of a brand
new material highly resistant to normal disinfectants
used in swimming pool water disinfection and the
co-extrusion process needed to couple this material
to a flexible hose in order to create, inside the hose
itself, a chlorine proof internal layer.
Thanks to that, it is possible to lay a thin protective
skin on the internal side of the hose able to protect
itself from chlorine water attack. This is strongly
useful in order to improve chemical and physical
hose resistance and its mechanical properties
during its working life with an increase in product
life time as well.
The new protective skin, made of a particular
high molecular weight PVC resin and innovative
process before wrapping the stripe itself on a
future perspective: plastic windows construction as
a dedicated job qualification
Until 2007/2008 there was no training for PVC
window assemblers. Thanks to the initiative of
the GkV this lack of a qualified training has been
addressed. The German Federal Ministry of
German PVC window producers have now the
possibility to train their own junior staff in a qualified
Thanks to a successful association of soft and rigid
PVC, the new PVC LOGIx 45 range offers a quick,
For several years and in many countries all over
installation in commercial buildings.
Nowadays DLP or DLPe has become a generic
word designing electrical trunking especially in
commercial environment.
Usually, dedicated mounting accessories are
necessary to fit wiring devices in the trunking.
These accessories take into account dispersion in
dimensions due to manufacturing processes and
corresponding variable play between the moulded
parts of the wiring device and the extruded profile.
mosaic program Dlpe snap-on trunking: a new
solution for wiring devices installation in commercial
buildings
The product combines aesthetic and technical
advantages of round corner associated with flexible
cover and convenience of snap on installation for
Mosaic wiring devices.
In traditional electrical trunking design, wiring
devices are fit in the trunking thanks to mounting
devices. Therefore a potential drawback of snap on
design is that the wiring device may be not so firmly
attached in the trunking.
To overcome this limitation Planett Wattohm has
introduced a new version of its LOGIx 45 product:
in the new design, a thin layer of soft PVC is
coextruded with the white rigid PVC on both inner
sides of the trunking thus bordering the 45mm wide
aperture.
Flexibility of PVC cord provides a good adaptation to
the play between the actual width of the opening and
the precise 45 mm width of wiring devices. On the
other hand excellent grip of plasticized PVC helps to
secure the mounting.
thermal reinforcement with co-extruded steel cables
To enhance the flexural stiffness of PVC window
profiles the plastic matrix has been reinforced
with steel cable. This reinforcement has a
significantly lower heat transfer than conventional
reinforcements for window profiles, with a
resistance comparable to that of steel. With this
reinforcement the newly developed window
systems contribute to the decrease of the energy
consumption in buildings. They are also suitable for
the construction of passive houses. The steel-PVC
re-usaBle pvc liner for s-pvc fully recyclable by
vinyloop ® process
Since 2007 kTN Italia transported PVC in bulk by
45’ container with a liner from the SolVin plant in
Southern France to Cremona, where the content
is unloaded into a silo. After unloading the liner
is removed and the container is re-used to export
Italian finished goods and not raw materials to the
South of France. Before the project the bulk trucks
returned 100% empty to France, today the 45’
hybrid containers return from Italy to France 100%
full of other palletized products.
There’s just one problem: the single use liner to
transport the PVC is made of polyethylene: and
PVC and PE are not compatible… As the product
transported from France to Cremona is always the
same, was born the idea of a re-usable liner.
After various unsatisfactory tests with liners of
enforced PE and raffia PP, we found the solution
with a liner made of polyester reinforced PVC. At the
end of the life cycle, the liner coul go to the Vinyloop
plant in Ferrara Italy.
PVC is the most used material to make siphons.
This project aims to improve its functionality by
making a part of it in flexible PVC. When a siphon
When you try to fix it yourself, it is very common
that the siphon leaks afterwards. We have tried to
improve the functionality by replacing the lower
part of it by a flexible PVC tube, in a way that a non
pvc-coated sound absorbing textile fabric
The topic of acoustic design is becoming more
and more significant in many areas of our daily
life. Our performance is largely dependent on our
well-being and on a stress-free environment. The
point is to create an atmosphere that minimizes
noise pollution. The Sound Absorption project
represents a new innovative solution. The soundabsorbing
textile fabric coated with PVC that has
been developed has acoustic properties by virtue of
dimensionally stable micropores and is especially
suited for applications in interior architecture and in
30% recycled content in fabric-backed vinyl
wallcoverings
The new specification for fabric-backed decorative
vinyl wallcovering incorporates a minimum of 30%
recycled content, when designed for use in contract
environments (eg hotels, offices, public buildings,
healthcare, restaurants and shops).
A ground-breaking new process using previously
unusable industrial waste PVC/paper/fabric
composite, which would have otherwise ended up
in landfill, can be seamlessly integrated within the
wallcovering. There is no need to ‘hide’ the recycled
content within a sandwich layer, which often gives
unnecessary and wasteful additional weight to the
finished product.
Available in several designs across a number
of colourways, the recycled content does not
compromise in any way the design of the
wallcovering aesthetically or performance-wise.
Nor is there any price premium for the new recycled
content designs.
low smoke pvc electro pipe
Polyvinyl chloride has a relatively high chlorine
content. Therefore, many PVC compositions have
good flame retardancy. This is especially true for
unplasticized PVC compositions. Without special
additives, rigid PVC complies with the fire test of the
European standard for electro pipes (IEC 61386).
However, a certain level of smoke development
does occur when ordinary PVC electric conduits
are set in fire. Although this particular standard
does not contain requirements concerning smoke
evolution, a reduction of the smoke evolution is
desired.
In the present invention, the PVC U formulations
developed can favourably be extruded into electric
conduits at a usual temperature. Besides a good
processability, the pipes still have mechanical
properties (bending, impact) in the same
classification range. Under the conditions of a
test often used for cables (IEC 61034), the new
formulations give approximately 30% less smoke
compared to the standard products.
SureCel represents a breakthrough processing
aid technology for rigid foam PVC. This technology
relies on the reaction of the processing aid with PVC
to build a polymer network in the melt during the
extrusion process. This leads to a specific rheology
allowing for reductions in density, impossible to
reach with existing processing aids.
Reductions in density of up to 20% equate to not
only lighter materials but also to a 20% reduction in
the amount of PVC compound required to produce
a specific linear length of foamed PVC product.
Sheet thickness can also be increased while
maintaining a good cell structure and modulus.
SureCel can be used in place of conventional
processing aids without adversely affecting product
recycle and reuse. SureCel and foamed PVC are
an innovative combination for sustainable building
materials, saving raw materials.
pvc plate with a wood design for deep-drawing
applications
Plastic door and window elements with a wood
design and feel have very good weather resistance,
low cost and high versatility. However, due to the
different production steps, the profiles and the door
leaves show slight differences in terms of visual
appearance and feel. The project was motivated
by the need to generate a semi-finished product
that had exactly the same visual appearance and
feel as the decoration film that it was based on.
The semi-finished product had to be combined
with the decoration film in a continuous process
without using adhesives. To achieve this, a special
apparatus was developed, designed and built,
which can integrate the lamination directly into the
plate production process. The process is configured
in such a way that the embossed pattern typical
of a film is retained and is even more resistant
to the structural leveling that is typical for the
thermoforming process.
sinepipe
low cost, large diameter dual wall corrugated pipe
Inadequate sanitation in developing countries
has a high material impact on human health,
social and economic development and ecosystem
sustainability. In urban areas with high economic
activities and large environmental impact every
single Euro invested in a sewer infrastructure has
4-10 Euro economic return. Sinepipe has developed
a revolutionary, patented production technology
for light weight PVC sewer and storm water pipes.
Sinepipe reduces the capital investment of a total
production line to 1/3. This radical innovation
eliminates the expensive mold blocks that are
characteristic for the state-of-the-art dual wall
corrugated pipe production, but maintains the
high benefits of this product. This unique Sinepipe
innovation will make it possible to build affordable,
long life sewer and storm water infrastructure in
urban areas of developing countries resulting in
improvement of public health, environment and
economic development.
pvc based coated textiles for food applications
years ago Sioen actively responded to the needs
of its customers by developing new PVC based
qualities with reduced ecological impact. Our broad
range of phthalate free PVC coated textiles is one
example. Another more recent development deals
with food grade PVC coated polyester fabrics that
can be used as flexitank material for e.g. drinking
water (B6303, 1100 g/m2 ) or as cover material
for e.g. fruits and vegetables (B7303, 550 g/m2 ).
Both products are fully compliant with European
legislation (European Directive 2002/72/EC and
its amendments) on food packaging materials,
meaning that: all ingredients are listed on the
European positive lists, individual and overall
migration limits are respected, requirements with
respect to smell and taste are respected. Detailed
chemical analysis of numerous competitor products
for food applications showed that Sioen’s products
are unique!
anti-graffiti lacquers for pvc substrates
Graffiti is a general problem in our society. Once
applied onto walls, plastics, wood, etc. these
substances are very difficult to get rid off.
The same goes for graffiti on PVC coated polyester
substrates. Since graffiti paints are all based on
aggressive solvents, PVC coated textiles (e.g.
trailer covers, tents & textile architectures, train
covers, banners, etc.) are irreversibly damaged
due to the penetration of its ingredients into the
substrate. As a spin-off activity within the European
project CONTEx-T, Sioen has developed a unique
lacquer that can withstand these aggressive graffiti
paints. This lacquer, which is based on advanced
copolymeric species, can be applied by coating or
spraying and results in an excellent barrier to all
kinds of graffiti paints.
pvc based photovoltaic (pv) laminates
Sioen produces ca. 75 Mio m2 of coated textiles
per year, the majority being based on PVC
as coating material. Since 2008 Sioen has
been actively researching the possibilities to
incorporate electronics into such technical textiles.
Examples are incorporation of light, electronic
security systems, heating and photovoltaic cells.
Incorporation of electronics strongly increases
the functionality of the coated textiles and results
in new materials for all kinds of applications.
This submission is focussed on PVC based
flexible photovoltaic laminates that can be (non-)
permanently connected to PVC coated fabrics, e.g.
for tents and textile architectures, trailers, etc. Sioen
expects to commercialize its PV laminates by Q4
thermoplastic uv curable coatings (laquers and
links)
Each year hundreds of millions m2 of PVC coated
textiles are being lacquered with solvent-based
lacquers worldwide. Since such lacquers typically
consist of 10% solids and 90% solvents, this
implicates enormous energy costs for drying and
huge emissions of VOCs/CO to the environment
2
(solvents are burned > CO emission). Since mid
2
2008 Sioen Industries and Deceuninck have jointly
worked on the development of thermoplastic UV
coatings that can replace solvent based systems
on short term. Due to unique combinations of
monomeric and oligomeric species we have
identified formulations that can be applied onto
the PVC substrate via traditional rotogravure
followed by UV curing under a set of UV lamps
for instantaneous drying. The resulting materials
combine good welding properties (thermal and HF)
with similar mechanical properties, thermal and UV
stability, flexibility, etc. as solvent based products.
Alvehol 1200 is a PVC pipe intended to be used for
non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage
systems with perfectly smooth internal and external
surfaces. The pipe wall is not compact but consists
in a sort of cells in the longitudinal direction. The
wall structure can be regarded as a double T beam;
this configuration gives equal mechanical properties
but lower weight compared to a compact PVC pipe.
Sirci Gresintex has developed an extrusion line for
Alvehol pipe nominal diameter up to 1200 mm,
with formulations containing new generation of
stabilisers (“lead free”). Other advantages of Alvehol
in the production process, are the lower material
consumption in comparison with the same diameter
pipe and mechanical properties, the easier handling
during installation in difficult situations and the
choice of non-toxic formulations.
pvc-o pressure pipes for conveyance potable water
irrigation and industrial uses
The project involves the production of PVC-O
pressure pipes for conveyance drinkable water,
irrigation and industrial uses. The process was
made possible thanks to the phenomenon of biaxial
molecular orientation during the production of
rigid PVC pipes. In this way the molecular chains
of PVC and their layout change from random to
well organized type compared to a laminated. The
process of molecular orientation developed by
Molecor and licensed to Sirci Gresintex ensures
high productivity and repeatability thanks to
control temperature, pressure and strain rate
during molecular orientation. In this manner PVC
pressure pipes improve the mechanical property
and become a serious candidate for conveyance of
pressurized fluids compared to other plastics pipes.
The main advantages about using PVC-O pipes are:
resistance to internal pressure, resistance to impact
and accidental cuts, hydraulic performance, high
flexibility, easy installation, energy efficiency.
pvc-based wood-plastic composites
The overall aim of the research project “Technology
analysis of the weldability of commercially available
WPC formulations using heated tool butt welding,
ultrasonic welding and vibration welding. The
objective is to adapt the findings made so far of on
current WPC welding processes and parameters
in such a way that this new material can be joined
using these welding techniques. The main focus
of the research is on the optimization of the heated
evaluation and improvement of the economic
efficiency of welding pvc window profiles
The motivation behind this research project was
based on the long overdue adjustment of the
process parameters in heated tool butt welding to
the current PVC formulations and welding machines
for window profiles. The expected potential in
terms of cycle time reduction could be clearly
confirmed and successfully implemented. Each
of the considered white profile types allowed a
reduction of the cycle time by about 24%, along
with increasing the weld strength by an average of
17%. Profiles with outstanding weldability could
even be welded up to 40% faster, while the weld
quality according to valid quality guidelines would
always be ensured. Thanks to the developed
welding parameters, the efficiency of a window
manufacturing line could be clearly increased and
costs could be reduced without having to face
quality losses, a higher environmental impact or
additional investment costs.
have also been proved to be efficient plasticizers
for PVC. The cardanol molecule can be modified
by esterification of the hydroxyl group, to obtain
cardanol acetate, which can be used as secondary
panels are made of variable sizes (Max size of
panel 140 cm x 300 cm) and can be removed for
maintenance. Each panel will use from 40 to 80 kg
of PVC scraps depending on the weight of the
material itself.
Colors: any color available
Colors presented in this project come from Arimar
The hamos WRS system generates clean milled
PVC from PVC profile production waste, profile
sections and old windows from demolition or
modernization projects. The process is fully
automatic, i.e. no manual presorting is required.
The window profile sections are crushed, dusted
and separated from rubber or flexible-PVC seals
and other incompatible plastics by an EkS
electrostatic separation system, using the different
electrostatic charging behavior of rigid PVC, rubber
and flexible PVC. After the separation cycle the PVC
is already approx. 99.5% pure. The opto-electronic
color sorter then eliminates colored impurities, so
that the obtained recycled PVC is ultra pure. At
the end of the hamos WRS recycling process is
high-quality recycled PVC which can be used as a
high-quality raw material for the production of new
Inspired by the Ocean, Molusk jewels are creative
in the extreme. Diverse techniques such as silkscreening,
using a multitude of colours and patterns
as well as metallic gilding, allow the plastic to
Lame de 43 mm
Lame de 58 mm
In order to revitalise the PVC roller shutter market
segment, OCEPLAST has designed a range of
panels called VRColor
Gris
® combining the insulating
properties of PVC with the diversity of RAL colours
for Aluminium (Grey 7016, Canon Blue, Red 3004,
Green 6005…)
By co-extruding a bottom layer of coloured PVC
and, on the surface, an acrylic of the PMMA type
with additives and a pigment, OCEPLAST offers the
VR43mm and 58mm ranges resistant to scratches,
UV and the thermal constraints that a solid-tinted
PVC cannot support in solid colours.
As well as an already-proven technology in window
and door applications, the specifics of the process
consist in solving the problems specific to a panel
in a roller shutter (jamming, repeated opening and
closing cycles) justifying the filing of a patent.
oceWooD fence from oceDeplast
The combination of WPC and aluminium brings
personality and modernity to your exterior.
The OCEWOOD fence is an aesthetic and innovative
fence concept combining a variable-angle post with
a thermo-lacquered aluminium finishing strip and
tongue and groove 200mm panels in a PVC/wood
composite.
OCEPLAST’s objective consists of marketing a
product that is:
– genuinely differentiated from the traditional fences
on the market made of PVC, wood or wire mesh
– innovative with a universal post that can position
the panels from 90° to 180°
– customisable by assembling the panels at heights
from 600mm to 1800mm
– aesthetic due to its choice of colours (Range =
8 colours + 4 WPC colours = 32 different colour
combinations)
vrocker, rocker chair: a rocking chair 100% in pvc
Vrocker is a small rocking chair made by foaming a
PVC compound containing phthalate to enhance its
plasticity. The whole product is made of PVC with a
combination of 2 different processing techniques.
The foamed structure is sprayed up using a
technique that is borrowed from the automotive
sector. After this, the chair is covered with a thin
coat of PVC paint, making it waterproof and easier
to clean. The outer skin and the soft quality of
the inner material allow the chair to rock without
damaging even the most delicate floor surfaces.
This chair is made entirely of PVC: this means the
material is easier to recycle and to recover.
the Breathing room
The Breathing Room is an art project by Danish
artist Søren Dahlgaard. you enter a white room,
which literally breaths. The walls – made from
PVC – move by the force of air, taken on concave
and convex shapes, giving the impression that the
room is alive and breathing. This rather strange
behavior of the room suggests new ways of
thinking in the context of familiar concepts such as
buildings and spaces. Here it is an art installation.
In other fields this could inspire new thoughts for
architects, engineers, entrepreneurs, designers and
manufacturers.
