8 MAIN STREET FOCUS August 2008Landscaping Changes at the Manatee CenterSure to Make a Butterfly’s Wings Flutterby Carol Johnson & Jann WidmayerUpon your next visit to the Manatee Observationand Education Center, you may notice that our landscapingis looking very vibrant. Thanks to the kindefforts of several volunteer gardeners over the past fewmonths and donations of plants by area landscape companies,we have been able to make our flowerbeds morebeautiful and butterfly friendly. In 2004, HurricanesFrances and Jeanne wiped out our butterfly populationand it has still not recovered. In order to produce a largebutterfly population, there must be plants available thatsupport the growth of these beautiful creatures. Theseplants supply food for adult butterflies, shelter to layeggs, food to nourish the caterpillar, ideal locations toform chrysalises and as the cycle begins again, food forthe newly emerged butterflies. The adults will return tolay their eggs, thus causing the butterfly population togrow. Upon the recommendation of the How-To Gardener,Ann Marie Slattery-Loveridge, we revamped our butterflygarden and surrounding landscaping to feature native

Later on they will wrap themselves inchrysalises and grow into beautiful butterflies. The ManateeCenter butterfly garden is on its way to once moreto become a thriving butterfly sanctuary! As campers arrive for the Manatee Center summercamps throughout June and July, they will be able to seethe differences in our Butterfly Garden’s appearance fromlast year. The vast improvement is sure to cause a stiramong the curious attendees as they gaze at the array ofbeautiful butterflies flittering among the plants. We began our project in March 2008, when a dedicatedgroup of AmeriCorps volunteers contacted us wantingto help at the Center. They diligently weeded the flowerbeds preparing for new plants. Two weeks later, three studentsfrom St. Edwards Upper School in Vero Beach wantedto perform a volunteer project during their SpringBreak. All of that hardwork paid off, and four months later our landscapingthrives with native foliage that butterflies love such asMilkweed, Dill, Italian Parsley, Coontie, Muhly Grass,Wild Coffee and Cocoplum. We would be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunityto acknowledge the generous donation by all of thosewho volunteered their time for this project and the companiesthat donated plants: Spencer Porteous of EverythingOutdoors, located at 384 Old Dixie Highway inVero Beach; Gary Roberts Nursery and Landscaping,Continued on page … 10Two Locations to Serve You on the Treasure CoastNew Address in Port St. LucieFort Pierce Port St. Lucie461-8833 878-1952Fax 461-88722222 COLONIAL ROAD, SUITE 20034950Fax 878-1709439 S.W. August 2008 MAIN STREET FOCUS 11Preserving a Piece of Our Past: The P.P. Cobb Buildingby John CulverhouseIn the 1870s, Captain Benjamin Hogg and his wifeAnnie Hogg built a Trading Post in Fort Pierce. When itwas built, it was located along the Indian River in BrevardCounty, as Fort Pierce was not incorporated as acity, and St. Lucie County was yet to be formed in 1905.The Trading Post supplied locals with the staples theyneeded for daily life. The seafaring Captain Hogg wouldvoyage throughout the Caribbean seeking exotic goods, which he would take to Jacksonville and trade for sugar, salt, flour and other basics needed in Fort Pierce. At theFort Pierce Trading Post, locals, including pioneer familiesand Native Americans, would come to acquire goodsand supplies that they needed in their daily lives. FortPierce’s Trading Post supplied pioneers across SouthFlorida, including those in the new and developing FortPierce community. The Hoggs eventually sold the building, and it hadmany uses over the years. For a short time, it was operatedas an oyster cannery, and the area became known as “Cantown.”Just a few years later, Peter P. Cobb purchased thebuilding and turned it into one of the most thriving generalmerchandise stores in the entire region. The store’s sloganwas “Everything to Eat, Wear, and Use,” and as his storewas one of the most comprehensive general stores as anyonecould find, that was a pretty valid claim. The store sold groceries, hardware, clothing, farm implements, and just abouteverything in between. The building expandedover the years, whichincluded the addition ofa post office, in whichPeter P. Cobb became thepostmaster.Peter P. Cobb sold hisbuilding to Buddy Pittsand his family in 1931.The Pitts family used thebuilding to sell furniture.Pitts owned the buildinguntil the 1980s when hesold it to David Cleveland.Photo provided by David Cleveland.Today, the P.P. August 2008 MAIN STREET FOCUS 13“The P.P. Cobb Building is the oldest commercialbuilding downtown, that has remained commerciallyviable continuously throughout the years. That says it allright there,” Mike Adams, said. “The building was relevantas a Trading Post in its early days, and has weatheredall the storms throughout the years, so to speak, andmade all the transitions necessary to remain a relevantcommercial center in today’s downtown Fort Pierce.”Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne, which tore throughSaint Lucie County four years ago, caused no damage tothe building. While numerous structures more recentlybuilt throughout the area suffered extensive damage orcomplete structural failure, the wood-framed P.P. In the mid-1980s, he bought thebuilding from Buddy Pitts and undertook a major historically-sensitivebuilding renovation to restore the building into asignificant downtown establishment like it was in years past.Cleveland took on the P.P. Cobb project just afterbeing part of the Boston House restoration, and remembersbeing optimistic about Fort Pierce’s future at a timewhen downtown was at its worst state of decline. The building was in bad shape at the time of the purchase, according to Cleveland, who completely restoredthe building inside and out. June 2008 MAIN STREET FOCUS 15Downtown Hero – Kia Powersby Anne SatterleeOftentimes there comes along someone you meet andyou know at that defining moment, they have the will, personalityand fortitude to do just about anything they puttheir mind to in life. Well, I knew when I met Kia HamillPowers in January 2000, who was working in the BuildingDepartment as a temporary employee, that her positive andhelpful demeanor would be a great asset to the City of FortPierce. Needless to say, that proved to be very true and shewas hired as a full-time employee in the City Clerk’s Officelater that year and quickly began wearing many new hats.Born and raised in Fort Pierce, she graduated from FortPierce Westwood High School in 1999 and received herBachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketingfrom Florida Atlantic University in 2005. With familyties to the Fort Pierce community, Kia knew many individualswho came to City Hall for assistance and she tookthe time to be helpful and courteous to the public and wasalways willing to volunteer in her spare time. Busy withDOWNTOWN HEROschool, her three beagles, active with theChristmas Pageant atSt. Andrew’s EpiscopalChurch in Fort Pierce, serving on the schoolboard for church, music ensemble whereshe plays guitar withher Dad and teachingSunday school, Kia also managed a wedding to Eric Powersduring her 7-1/2 years while at the City.I think by now you get the picture that she is one busyperson. Kia did not go unnoticed by Main Street FortPierce with her quick ability to accomplish many things atonce working in the City Clerk’s Office coordinating allthe permitting for events, parades, etc. in the City. Kia wasa natural for the City’s Centennial Planning Committee in2000 which was just the beginning of her volunteer effortswith Main Street. She continued to assist Main Street FortPierce with monthly Friday Fest permitting responsibilitiesand helped with the annual Sandy Shoes Festival. When the job opportunity opened for another passion, preservation, Kia interviewed and went to work in theCity’s Planning Department as the Historic PreservationOfficer in 2005 overseeing City sponsored projects, planningand urban design work. Kia ably assisted MainStreet Fort Pierce with technical expertise on the recentlyrenovated 1895 Platts-Backus House which is now MainStreet’s office. With a keen sense of community spirit, Kiadefined this position with the City of Fort Pierce and wasa tremendous asset over the past three years.Recently, Kia has left the City to join the Lyric Theatrein Stuart, Florida as Director of Operations. She isresponsible for building and renter contracts, and renterrelations. As Kia said, “This is my dream job and I’m fortunateto have been given the opportunity to work forthe City of Fort Pierce.” Possibly, one day, she will returnto the City of Fort Pierce and may even work at the SunriseTheatre. I know for now she is a goodwill ambassadorto the City of Fort Pierce working in Stuart and isforever our Downtown Hero.

August 2008 MAIN STREET FOCUS 29by Dan DannahowerSummer on the WaterBy now we are well into our beautiful spring/summerweather pattern. Warm days, light winds, calm sea conditionsand afternoon showers and thunderstorms are thenorm. It’s a great time to be out on the Indian RiverLagoon or the Atlantic Ocean or even one of our manypublic beach or pier accesses.Fishing in the lagoon remains good. I recently had theopportunity to fish the lagoon from my own boat withfriends Pete Whitridge and his Uncle. We drifted withlive shrimp on the flats and caught a variety of fishincluding snapper, sheepshead, a small shark, and ofcourse catfish. We didn’t boat any trout or redfish but didsee them tearing up schools of mullet. All had a greattime despite a mechanical failure that resulted in a towinat the end of the day. Always be prepared for the unexpectedon the water!Offshore reports are typical for this time of year. Sporadiccatches of Kingfish, Dolphin, Wahoo etc. Theocean waters are typically very calm during the summerand present a good chance for smaller boats to ventureout or for those who don’t enjoy bobbing around in higherwaves during the winter to enjoy a really pleasant dayon the water. A number of professional charters are availableat our local marinas and can offer a top notch experiencefishing either the river or the ocean. If you want todo it on your own the marinas and tackle shops can providea wealth of information on when and where to go.I hope you get a chance to enjoy our world class fishingthis summer while the weather is nice and the seas arepleasant.
