From the Commodore
he 2010/11 year has seen a number of positive
T developments within the club. Firstly the
cultural change amongst our members towards
ensuring that all those who participate are
contributors to the running of our sport has been
very encouraging. The committee has enabled
these changes with the introduction of a permanent
sailing membership category as well as a day
membership, administered through the day-pass
system. The family membership offering has also
been improved and in the coming year further
benefits will be added to our membership package
to make it even more appealing for regular visitors
to become a member at Royals.
The house, bar and dining room services have
gradually improved to a point where next year we
are planning to operate with a full time chef to
ensure food and service quality is guaranteed at
any time, not just for functions.
The Royals members have once again produced
strong racing results in various events; particularly
the Sydney Hobart with 3 boats in the top 10 was
an outstanding achievement. The Association Cup
was retained and various prizes were collected in
the Range Series as well as Geelong Week. The
Lipton Cup has positioned itself strongly as the
‗must do‘ event prior to Christmas, particularly for
the divisions 1 and 0 fleet. Our challenge is still to
grow the interest from divisions 2, 3 and cruising.
The first year running of the Magical Mystery Tour
was reasonably well attended and all who were
involved enjoyed the event, so I‘m sure there will
be more entrants next year.
The major issue in the Yard and Marina area has
been the decommissioned slipway and the
committee‘s detailed review of options going
forward. After an extensive review process a vast
majority of the membership voted in favour
installing a platform lift to replace the slipway.
Project planning is currently underway with works
expected to commence prior to Christmas 2011.
The Royals Training Centre has been extremely
busy with various junior and adult courses
throughout the season. The introduction of the
Tackers Program to the club has been a huge
success and the focus for 2011 is to transition
Tackers participants into junior members. Cadets
and off the beach have seen an ongoing increase
in participation. Results at major events are
improving again and all junior competitors had a
great night celebrating their achievements during
the extremely well attended junior presentation
night.
The marina expansion project has had some
positive developments with general agreement
reached with Parks Victoria on the broad footprint
of the future marina. Final sign-off however is still
pending.
In an effort to increase engagement in club
activities from young sailors between the ages of
18 and 35, we have established a Young Members
Committee who are charged with organising sailing
and social events for their peers who are typically
intermediate or sailing members at Royals. A
Facebook page has already been setup, I‘m sure
you‘ll hear more of this group once the summer
season starts again.
From an administration perspective we have seen
a number of staff changes in the office, including
the retirement of Yvonne Davie after more than 30
years of service. One of Yvonne‘s last tasks was
assisting in the change of financial systems, the
implementation of which was finalised in July 2011.
The fully integrated financial, membership, marina
and point of sale system is designed to streamline
processes and improve administration efficiencies.
New functionality such as member self-service for
accounts and membership data will be
implemented in the next few months.
I would like to thank the General Manager Alex
McGillivray and his staff for all their hard work this
year as well as all our club‘s volunteers on and off
the water without whom we would not be able to
operate.

nother successful summer sailing season was
A recently concluded at the annual presentation
night. Michael Hiatt was a worthy Yachtsman of the
Year after his usual class leading performances
with Living Doll before capping off the year in fine
style with a seventh place at the Etchells World
Championships held in San Diego. Shogun took
out the George Low Trophy following wins at the
Lipton Cup, a third place in the Rolex Sydney to
Hobart, a fifth place in the 2010 Sydney to
Southport and another fifth at Hamilton Island Race
Week being the highlights. The Cruising Boat of the
Year was Greg Snowball‘s much travelled
Dreamcatcher 3.
Only in the past month Tanya Stanford has taken
her Nouannie team on tour to Sweden to compete
in one of the world‘s great offshore events, the 310
mile Round Gotland Race where they have sailed a
borrowed sistership to Nouannie into seventh place
in their forty six boat division. They were fourth in
the Scampi class and Tanya was awarded the best
female skipper award for the race which boasts in
excess of two hundred entries.
Closer to home many Club boats competed in the
Geelong regatta and after one of the slowest
Passage Races in recent memory, competitors
more than made up for the late arrival by partying
into the evening. The Club had many noteworthy
performances with Living Doll, Executive Decision
and Penfold Audi Sport in the IRC divisions,
Nouannie in the AMS division and Soiree Blue,
Biddy Hu II and Galaxy in the Cruising Division.
The Audi Performance Series was scored on
Performance Handicap and AMS and I would
recommend this series as a very good compromise
between the windward/leeward racing of the IRC
series and the fixed mark courses and congestion
of the Cruising series. The racing emphasis of the
Club is certainly toward the measurement systems
(IRC and AMS) and I always encourage boat
owners to make the effort to obtain a measurement
certificate for their boat.
As an alternative to the Christmas Ocean Races
the Club ran a cruise between Christmas and New
Year. Ten boats met at Queenscliff on a windy
December 27 th with eight boats leaving the
following day on a ―mystery tour‖ of Westernport
with overnight stops at Flinders, Clelland‘s Bight,
Rhyll and Cowes. The event was very well received
and this year‘s event is recommended for anyone
looking for a relaxed cruise in company with other
Club members.
Over the summer there were strong performances
from Executive Decision, Chutzpah38, Penfold
Audi Sport and Surprise in the Club Marine Series
and IRC/AMS State Championships. These boats
also provided the backbone to another successful
Association Cup defence.
The Club continues to enjoy a reputation for
providing excellent race management and in
addition to running our own Club events David
LeRoy and his team of James Davison, Denis
Spinley, Bill Owen, Sally Markham, Alasdair
McBride, Peter Beddgood, John Wilbraham and
Peter Clark have been busy running Sail
Melbourne World Cup racing as well as the
multihulls and IRC Division A boats at Audi Victoria
Week. Congratulations on doing such a great job
and generally setting the standard here on Port
Phillip.
Looking forward to the coming summer the annual
Geelong regatta is looking for a new naming rights
sponsor following the withdrawal of Audi and the
series is currently known as the ―Festival of Sails‖.
This is traditionally a very popular event with Club
members and I am sure that the new event
managers will put together a program that will
appeal to the majority of Victorian sailors.
A new addition to the calendar will be an inter club
long distance race to be held on November 12
which is an event that I am quite excited about as
an alternative to the windward/leeward races that
predominate in the Club Marine Series. This race
will also form part of a revamped Livingston Trophy
which will now be awarded to the aggregate winner
of our long distance races.
So whatever your sailing aspirations the Club is
offering a great range of events to suit. The annual
Safety Equipment Declaration will be mailed out
shortly along with a summary of Club events. The
on-line entry is now available for entering the
coming summer‘s events.
In closing, I would like to wish Club members every
success for the coming season.

Sail Training and Development
he 2010/11 year has proved to be an extremely
T successful one for the Royals Training Centre
(RTC). The training centre was set up via the Sail
Training and Development Committee at the end of
2009. The 2010/11 season was the first full season
to be run under the new structure and was guided
by the committee members of Vice Commodore
Andrew Munro, Club Captain David Ellis, Justin
Brenan, David Johnson and Peter Roberts, along
with General Manager Alex McGillivray and Sail
Training and Development Manager Gavin Wall.
All the following programs and initiatives
culminated in Royals receiving two awards at this
years Yachting Victoria Awards Night. These being;
YATC Training Centre of the Year
Coaching Program of the Year
Training Programs:
Tackers – junior learn to sail
The tackers program started in September 2010
with a Tackers 1 and Tackers 3 school holiday
program. It then moved into the regular weekend
training from October to December with a Tackers
1 and two Tackers 2 programs. The second half of
the season saw further school holiday programs
and Tackers 1, 2 and 3 programs over the
weekends. Tackers has proved to be a huge
success with over 300 enrolments for the season.
Approximately 60 - 70% of these coming from nonsailing
families.
Adult learn to sail
The Royals Training Centre was the second centre
in Australia to be accredited in the new ―National
Keelboat Scheme‖ and was the first in Australia to
run programs under this scheme. The programs
enable adults with no experience to learn the
basics and progress through an accredited and
structured pathway. We had over 30 enrolments in
this scheme with 30% finding spots on club boats
as crew.
Race Coaching Program
This program was initially designed and run by
Lennie Beattie and the Woman in Sailing
Committee with the help of professional state
coach Mark Tonner-Joyce. During the winter of
2010 Mark and Gavin Wall developed a further
three modules to complement the original ―Racing
Skills‖ module. The program now consists of four
modules being ―Advanced Boat Handling, Boat
Speed, Racing Skills and Tactics‖. All aimed at the
intermediate sailor who is looking to improve their
technical skills and understanding of race tactics.
One spin off from this program has been the
confidence of the participants to hire one of the
club Elliotts and race in events like the Class
Monkeys. We now have between two and five
Elliotts sailing in this event this winter.
School Programs
The RTC has a number of school programs
running during the week using club boats such as
Extremes, Pacers and Elliotts. Schools run outdoor
education programs like ―Duke of Edinburgh‖ in our
extremes. While another successful program is the
―Confidence through Sailing‖ program, aimed at
secondary school children who have learning and
integration issues due to a lack of confidence or
self-esteem. The program uses the sport of sailing
to improve their confidence and therefore their
integration at school and at home.
Sailability – the next step
The training centre in conjunction with Yachting
Victoria, Hobson's Bay City Council and the
Williamstown Community Centre successfully
applied for a grant from the Department of Planning
and Community Development to set up the first
structured learn to sail program for people of all
abilities. The first stage of this program ran during
the first term of 2011 and culminated in an official
launch with local dignitaries, club officials and
media.
Further initiatives being undertaken by the
committee over the last twelve months include:
To help with the delivery of the Tackers
program and to further develop our senior
cadet sailors the training centre initiated a
program that enabled these junior members
to become accredited assistant instructors.
The RTC put them through their assistant
instructor qualifications, power boat handling
certificates and then employed them in the
Tackers program. This proved very
successful with Sarah Wallace now
becoming a full instructor. This initiative is to
be repeated on an annual basis.
The ongoing review of the off the beach and
training facilities. Conceptual drawings have
been finalised and costed. With further work
being done on extra floating pontoons and
temporary boat storage facilities.
A youth development program aimed at
retaining and enticing youth back into the
club. The program could become a joint
project with Royal Bright Yacht Club and
would centre around the use of the club
Elliotts.
A number of senior training programs have
been initiated over the winter series with
First Aid, Power Boat, Radio Operator
(thanks to Marine Safety Victoria for their
grant) and Diesel maintenance courses
being very well attended.
On a revenue basis the training centre has
grown 400% year on year while achieving a
target operating outcome of a $10,000
deficit. A summary of the RTC results are
shown in the Treasurer‘s report.
The committee and I want to recognise the
dedication and innovation that Gavin Wall has
bought to the role of Sail Training and
Development Manager I would like to personally
thank him for his efforts over the past 12 months.

Membership Sub-Committee
he past year has been busy and productive for
T the Membership Committee with still more
work to be completed. The main achievements
have been;
Membership restructure
After considerable consultation and debate
members approved rule changes to introduce a
new affordable sailing member category and a day
pass procedure. These changes combined, have
seen a welcome reversal of our membership
decline become steady growth.
All members have been very supportive of the
changes and in particular our senior members have
responded magnificently by encouraging crew to
avail of membership.
We have held a number of induction evenings to
welcome our newest members and introduce them
to skippers.
Other changes/innovations introduced have
included;
-Family membership; an updated family
membership package representing improved value
-Family passes; skippers are able to request up to
three complementary passes family passes in
recognition of the need to take family members
racing on an occasional basis. These passes are
intended for family members only in recognition of
the contribution senior member boat owners make
to the running of the Club.
-Special Purpose passes; At the Discretion of the
Commodore, Flags, OOD or General Manager a
senior member may request a special purpose
pass. Examples would include the requirement to
take a sail maker/broker racing
-Easier payment; membership subscriptions can
now be made automatically by monthly direct debit
-Members benefits package; we are building a
suite of discounted member benefits to further
enhance the value of Club membership ( including
special offers from Audi Penfold, Musto, Wild
Oats ,Sun Theatre and Nautilus Insurance)
Review
The membership Committee is in the final stages of
completing a review of the restructure and we will
communicate with members shortly.
Communication and marketing.
With a new membership structure we have
developed and produced a range of updated
promotional and marketing material to better
communicate and advocate the benefits of joining
our Club.
Other issues
A number of other issues have been raised and
discussed by the Membership Committee during
the year.
Club Culture
The membership changes and plans for a new
marina have understandably prompted some
discussion and concern that the Club‘s culture may
be harmed. The General Committee appreciates
this concern and is taking care to ensure that the
necessary changes (improved facilities and
contemporary membership structures) are not
introduced at the expense of the Club‘s culture as
being a premier keel boat racing club with a strong
commitment to youth development and welcoming
of visitors.
We are first and foremost a Club for the benefit of
members not a commercial business.
Member Behaviour
For the second year in a row the Committee has
had to investigate and act on a member‘s
unacceptable behaviour. This has been
disappointing for all concerned. The Committee is
committed to ensuring the Club is a safe and
enjoyable environment for all members and their
guests. Staff and the Committee have been trained
on the Responsible Service of Alcohol and we will
continue to act promptly to enforce these standards
to maintain the amenity of the Club and protect our
licence. The overwhelming majority of members of
course behave impeccably.

During the Club‘s financial year there were 112 candidates interviewed with those being elected comprising of 22 Senior, 8 Family, 62
Sailing, 18 Junior, 1 Absentee and 1 Intermediate.
Off The Beach (OTB)
I
n 2010/11, we‘ve regularly had a fleet of 14
boats, with a record (in recent years) of 16 boats
on the water. There were about 20 boats sailed
during the season, and the addition of two
additional boats for the 2011/12 season will
enhance the fleet further. With such a strong
increase in fleet size, we will be looking for crews to
get all these boats out on the water. Please
contact David Johnson if you‘re interested in getting
a ride on a Cadet!
We had a very successful coaching program in the
previous season, but lost our coach to a full time
job at another club. This year we were extremely
fortunate to have Gavin Dagley pick up the
coaching role and he has done a superb job for us.
The coaching program has been built to a new
(high) level, and this has been reflected in the
strong improvements across the fleet. I am
absolutely delighted that Gavin is able to continue
in this role for the 2011/12 season.
A new feature for the 2011/12 season is the new
positions of Junior OTB Captains. Elections were
held to select a Girl and Guy candidate from a field
selected by the OTB committee. The Junior OTB
Captains are Jacqui Prestedge and William Orr.
They will fulfil an important role in the Club. I‘d like
to thank all the candidates who agreed to be part of
this election.
The 2010/11 Nationals were held at SYC and there
was a strong Royals contingent, with 12 boats

This will create a hole in the experience in the fleet,
but I‘m pleased to see many sailors moving up
from crewing to skippering to fill the gap.
I know I say this every year, but I‘d like to thank all
the parents who helped out running the cadets
throughout the season. Without parents
involvement, we simply couldn‘t run the series. I
can‘t mention everyone but I want to especially
thank those who are there regularly… Daff
Wallace & Tom Fowler are there pretty much every
week. Gary Prestedge, Jerry Wilson, Guy
Schofield, Peter Roberts & Tim Olding were also
frequent contributors. Gavin Dagley was also on
the water for almost every race. We need at least
6 people on the water to run a race so extra hands
are always welcome.
Naomi Wilbraham & Fiona Prestedge did a
magnificent job with the canteen and would like to
thank all the others who helped during the year. If
you can help out for a few hours now and again,
please speak to Naomi because (like so many
things) – a few extra hands makes everything so
much easier. Naomi was given a well deserved YV
award at the 2011 Yachting Awards for her
services to the sport. Well done.

Results
The best performing team for 2010/11 was Brodie
and Callum in Manxman for the second year
running. But they didn‘t get it all their own way this
time. They won the Club Aggregate & Jan Trophy.
They also won ‗the Cup‘ for the best performing
Royals boat at the Nationals. Cal also won the
Arch Cawthorne Trophy for the crews race series.
John teamed up with Ryan Campbell this season.
Foxy Lady was a consistent performer throughout
the year, finishing up 2 nd in the Club Aggregate.
They also won the Smart Trophy.
Kate & Patrick were a new combination this year.
Bridgewick Farm was again consistently at or near
the front of the fleet. They did a great job in
winning the Club Championship by putting together
a series of great performances when it mattered.
Kate picked up the Djemma Trophy as Best
Female Skipper for the second time.
Jack and new crew Ryan Croft almost got the Club
Championship, only missing out on a countback.
They also took Stealth to a second Aoma
(handicap) Trophy. They also won the Sheeba and
Hillenaar Trophies. Coach Gavin awarded them
his Coach‘s Award for their hard work which led to
these great results.
Louis and Harrison sailed together again in
Sidewinder for the first half of the season and went
to the Nationals. In the second half, Harrison went
on to sail his own boat and Max then sailed with
Louis. Sidewinder‘s consistency this year was
obvious, but somehow they managed to miss out
on the silverware, with a best result of 3 rd in the
Hillenaar trophy.
Sailmaker were less consistent than Ben and Clare
would have liked, but still managed to hold a spot
in the middle of the fleet. Clare‘s determination
throughout the season earned her the Phillip Miller
award for tenacity. Clare will be skippering next
year, and is bringing another boat Clarebouyant to
the club.
Jacqui teamed up with David this year, and in her
second season as a skipper took Mustang Sally to
best second division boat. Mustang Sally was
awarded the Walker Warner for most tenacious
boat for the second year running.
Will was training new crew Tom McConville this
year. As we often see, there were some conflicts
between school commitments and sailing so they
missed a few races early on. However, results
improved throughout the season – and they
managed a 2 nd in the Smart Trophy in the second
half of the season.
Pip and Lucy were a new combination in King
George this year. Pip won the Malcom Anderson

for Best First Year Skipper, and I‘m sure we‘ll see
further improvements next year.
Matilda and Bert sailed Shockwave for the first part
of the season but didn‘t get out much in the second
half. I hope to see both these sailors around the
club a bit next season
Logan and Ryan Vanderkolk started out this year in
Viking. They had a lot to learn at the start of the
year, but made excellent progress as the season
progressed. I‘m sure they will continue to improve.
Gotcha was a new boat at the club this year.
Hannah had a few different crews early in the
season before teaming up with Geordie Coynes in
the second part. Hannah and Wynn Schofield
sailed Gotcha to first place in the Digby Trophy,
and Hannah received special commendation at the
Nationals for refusing to go to shore after being
holed in the first race of the day because she
wanted to sail in the second! Cadet mothers also
voted Gotcha to receive the Mothers‘
Encouragement Award.
Matteo also had several crew early on in Magician,
but was fortunate to team up with Callum Girvin in
the second half of the season. Improvement
throughout the season was evident and I‘m sure
there will be further progress.
Mike was yet another who didn‘t get a regular crew
during the season. At the end of the season,
Aaron Davy joined him in Graffiti.
Eva and Eamon teamed up in Asterix, showing
good form at times. But they missed too many
races to build a solid series score.
Bullant spent a lot of time on the rack this year.
Madeleine and Wynn teamed up but Madeleine
was away on a student exchange and missed a lot
of races.
Harrison and Nikki started sailing together in the
middle of the season in Blue Max. They have
learnt a lot, and Harrison is bringing a new boat
Hold On to the club for next year. They will
improve.
Aimeé struggled to get a regular crew in Imp, and
spent part of the season sailing at RGYC. I hope
we see her at Royals next year.
Polaris was sailed by Tessa and Patrick. Tessa
was a first year skipper and Patrick a first time
crew. Sadly, they decided not to continue half way
through the season but we hope to see them
around the club next year.
Dangald went out a few times with Jeremy & Ben
Kirkham, but they also didn‘t continue through the
season.

Development and Marina Task Force
uring the past year there has been a mixture
D of positive activity and continued frustration
with the progress of the permit application for the
new marina.
The Marina Task Force, chaired by General
Manager Alex McGillivray, has continued its
discussions with Parks Victoria regarding the initial
planning permit to the point where we have been
advised that we have satisfied the criteria set out in
the Williamstown Foreshore Strategic Plan and
also those required by Parks Victoria in respect of
the lay out and positioning of the new marina.
However, to date, our attempts to obtain the actual
permit have been frustrating, to say the least. We
have advised Parks Victoria that we are
approaching the State Government through our
local members of Parliament for further assistance.
The new Marina has received 60 expressions of
interest already from members, which bodes well
for the release of these to the market. The Marina
Task Force members are VC Andrew Munro, RC
David Seaman, David Sterrett, Alex Campbell,
Alex McGillivray and me, with co-opted assistance
from Michael McLean, Hans Nieuwland and PC
Ray Borrett. Thankyou to everyone for your time
and assistance.
Some twelve months ago, the draft documents for
the new rent and associated variations of lease in
respect of the land component of the Club were
finalised. Whilst the Club has agreed to the final
documents, it appears that Parks Victoria has not
forwarded these to the Minister for approval.
On the positive side, the Development Committee
is currently preparing a Master Plan for the
progressive upgrade or replacement of our major
facilities. Items such as the yard, hardstand, club
house, car park, lockers, and the use of containers
are all being addressed.
Included in the plan is the redevelopment of the
yard, the first stage of which is the platform lift as
approved at the Special General Meeting in July
this year.
The Development Committee, in conjunction with
the House & Social Committee is investigating the
possibility of some cosmetic upgrades and minor
works to give the Club House a fresh face and to
enable it to operate more efficiently during the next
few years prior to a larger scale extension or
redevelopment.
This has been my first year as Chair of the
Development Committee. It has been particularly
rewarding working with the committee which
comprises VC Andrew Munro, RC David Seaman,
PC Peter Bedggood, PC Mike Smith and our
General Manager Alex. McGillivray. My thanks for

010/11 has seen some gradual improvements
2 to the club with bigger plans in the pipeline. A
consultant has been in to observe the workings of
the kitchen and house and provided useful
recommendations for improvement of the service
and delivery of food and beverages at the club.
The house plan is underway with the outlook for a
bigger and better club house to provide a more
inviting place for members to spend time. Much
consideration is being placed on the broad
spectrum of demographics that make up the
members at Royals, from old to young.
There have been several great functions at the
club, with the recent, sold-out, trivia night, hosted
by the trivia masters, the Johnson family. The
cadet presentation night was also well attended as
was the 21 Club Dinner.
Favorable weather saw, at least from a social
perspective, great events on Opening Day, the
Lipton Cup and The Commodores Christmas Long
Lunch. The year also ended with several great
functions. The drinks and movie night for
volunteers at the club was it's usual hit. Santa by
sea plane was also an extravaganza with Father
Christmas kept busy for an hour and a half handing
out presents to a lot of expectant children.

A
fter an exhaustive process, the Committee
presented a number of options for the slipway
redevelopment at an information night in May.
There was a robust debate on all the options. After
the meeting the Committee prepared it's final
proposal for submission to members at a Special
General Meeting on July 8. The resolution was that
the members approve borrowings of up to $540,000
for the construction of a 'platform lift' where the
slipway is. The resolution was passed by the
members present.
Past Commodore Ray Borrett has kindly accepted
the job as Project Manager. Presentations to
potential contractors are already underway, and we
expect final decisions on preferred constructors by
the end of August. The Platform Lift will be able to be
member operated for the lift/wash/return at a very
reasonable cost. If the boat needs movement into
the yard then yard staff will perform that task.
At the Information Meeting, I predicted that we are
aiming for a December 2011 commissioning, I am
trying to keep to that!
Shortly, we will be calling for members to get their
names on the working bee list. There are lots of
small jobs that need to be done. Don't be shy, come
on, it's a great time to meet other members.
You will have seen a few more containers up by the
waste oil area. These are multi use for
contractor and club storage. This unused area will
now provide revenue for the club.
We are awaiting removal and replacement of a pile
in J row, this should be done by the time you read
this.
A programmed maintenance system is being
introduced for all aspects of the yard and marina, as
part of that there is regular inspection of all items,
however if you see any springs or shackles that are
badly worn, please report them as once. Boat
owners are reminded that the lines are your
responsibility.

oyals had an improved financial year with the continuing effects of the global financial crisis only
R negatively affecting the number of private functions in the clubhouse. This left an operating surplus of
$291,619 prior to depreciation. Outstanding debts of $18,545 were written off, to leave a cash operating
surplus of $273,074. After deducting the non-cash charge for depreciation of $193,004, The Club recorded
a year end surplus of $80,070.
Donations of $39,571 continued to be well received by The Club, assisting to pay for the purchase of Optis
for our Tackers program and travel fund.
The Club‘s debt is manageable at $161,294. It should be noted that for the coming year The Club has
been authorised by the members to borrow up to an additional $540,000 to finance the building of a
platform lift. Fundraising activities are currently being investigated to keep the borrowings to a minimum.
Detailed below is a summary of the year‘s financial results for each of The Club‘s major activities.
The House
The House operating loss reduced slightly on the previous year despite significantly less income of $46,607
on 2010. This was offset by reducing costs by $48,398 on the previous year. Currently we are advertising
for a full time chef to further improve member service and improve wage costs control. It is worth noting
that Clubs of similar standing and facility make much more significant losses in this area. It is considered
an important service for the members and one we continue to seek to improve. Similar to many other
clubs, a house advance is being considered by the general committee to encourage members to use the
bar and dining room facilities. The advance will be redeemable for bar and dining room purchases. A
further aim to improve the overall service level in The House and we are currently working on plans to
further reinvigorate The House facilities and services to meet these objectives.
The bar recorded an operating profit, with operational costs rising due to our reliance on casual staff, which
from 1 July 2010 now comes under the new Federal License Clubs Award. This attracts a 25% loading,
which was previously only 12%. Management is currently reviewing a move to more full time staff in some
areas to lessen our reliance on casuals and improve member service.

Income for the marina and hardstand increased significantly due to maximising Hardstand space
return. It should be noted that the return is still behind other Club benchmarks and to improve our
facility and operation we need to keep this aspect of our operations under constant review.
Accounting for this area will also be reviewed to include wages and a programmed maintenance
schedule.

Yard Operations
t was a solid year in the Yard despite the loss of the slipway. An upgrade of IT systems will see improved
I billing and charge allocation in the Yard. In the coming year a new OHS&E regime will come into effect,
which will undoubtedly incur some cost. The construction of the new platform lift is forecasted to draw
additional income into the yard once in operation.

Royals Training Centre and Cadets
The Club does not expect to make a surplus in either the Cadets or the Training Centre area, as investing
in sailors for our future is the main objective. The contribution the Club makes is kept to a manageable
level and it is pleasing to see new members coming out of the Royals Training Centre programs many of
which have started to hire our Elliotts. The Club revenues and costs grew significantly this year as the
Training Centre had it‘s first year of operation.
The Club recognises the importance of having viable training and cadet programs to enhance skills and
encourage membership and will continue to invest in them. The major cost in relation to the program was
the work on the Arch Cawthorn including painting, the propeller shaft, propeller and servicing, totalling
$12,440.

The financial report covers Royal Yacht Club of Victoria as an individual entity. Royal Yacht Club of Victoria
Incorporated is an association incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
The financial report is a general purpose financial report which has been prepared in accordance with Australian
Accounting Standards, Australian Accounting Interpretations and the Associations Incorporation Act 1981. Australian
Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded would result in a financial report
containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and conditions to which they apply.
Compliance with Australian Accounting Standards ensures that the financial statements and notes also comply with
International Financial Reporting Standards. Material accounting policies adopted in the preparation of this financial
report are presented below and have been consistently applied unless otherwise stated.
The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs, modified, where
applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and financial liabilities.
(a) Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on a first-in first-out basis
and include direct materials, direct labour and an appropriate proportion of variable and fixed overhead expenses.
(b) Property, Plant and Equipment
Plant and equipment is stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value.
Depreciation is calculated on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful life of the asset as follows:
Plant and equipment – over 3 to 15 years
Impairment
The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in circumstances
indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.
For an asset that does not generate largely independent cash inflows, the recoverable amount is determined for the
cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.
If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the assets or
cash-generating units are written down to their recoverable amount.
The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. In
assessing value in use, the estimated future cash flows are discounted to their present value using a pre-tax discount
rate that reflects current market assessments of the time value of money and the risks specific to the asset.
Impairment losses (where applicable) are recognised in the income statement in the other expenses line item.

(c) Cash
For the purposes of the Statement of Cash Flows, cash includes cash on hand, at banks and on deposit net of bank
overdrafts.
(d) Employee Entitlements
Provision is made for benefits accruing to employees in respect of wages and salaries, annual leave, long service leave
and other employee benefits when it is probable that settlement will be required and they are capable of being
measured reliably.
Wages and salaries, annual leave, long service leave and other employee benefits expected to be settled within 12
months, are measured at their nominal values using the remuneration rate expected to apply at the time of settlement.
Long service leave and other employee benefits which are not expected to be settled within 12 months are measured as
the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made by the entity in respect of services provided by
employees up to reporting date.
Superannuation Guarantee Charge
The club pays the Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC) to superannuation schemes as required under applicable
legislation.
(e) Income Tax
The club is exempt from Income Tax.
(f) Revenue
Fees, members subscriptions and rental income are recognised as revenue on an accruals basis.
Interest revenue is recognised on an accrual basis.
(g) Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is
not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognised as part of the cost
of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of expense. Receivables and payables in the Statement of Financial
Position are shown inclusive of GST.

I have audited the accompanying financial report of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Incorporated (‘the Club”) for the
year ended 31 st May 2011 as set out on pages 34 to 49.
Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report
The committee of the club is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance
with Australian Accounting Standards (including the Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the Associations
Incorporation Act (Vic) 1981. This responsibility includes establishing and maintaining internal control relevant to the
preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or
error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in
the circumstances.
Auditor’s Responsibility
My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. My audit has been conducted in
accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These auditing standards require that I comply with relevant ethical
requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the
financial report is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial
report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material
misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor
considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to
design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on
the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting
policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall
presentation of the financial report.
I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.

In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical
pronouncements.
