Remember: buy where you ride!The OFSC is devoted to proactive leadership inpromoting safe, responsible riding, on and off Ontariosnowmobile trails, by increasing snowmobile safetyknowledge, improving attitudes and behaviours throughrider education, safety legislation development andenforcement.All-Terrain Vehicle UseAll-Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s), as defined in the HighwayTraffic Act (HTA), are permitted on roadways under thejurisdiction of the Township of Oro-Medonte within thefollowing boundaries from January 1, 2015 – March 15,2015, between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00pm, asindicated on the map below.Northern Boundary – Highway 11Southern Boundary – Lake SimcoeWestern Boundary – Line 1 SouthEastern Boundary – Line 14 South from Highway 11 tothe Rail Trail. The boundary then continues from Line 15South from the Rail Trail to Lake Simcoe.ExclusionsOperation of ATV’s is limited to the travelled portion ofmunicipal roadways. ATV use is not authorized on thefollowing:• Ridge Road/Shanty Bay Road as it is under thejurisdiction of the County of Simcoe (ATV’s can onlycross at 90 degree angle);• Private roadways;• Sidewalks and walkways;• Ditches, drainage areas and other portions of roadallowances outside of the travelled portion of theroad;• Oro-Medonte Rail Trail; and• Unopened road allowances and right of ways.Please visit our website for more information about theprovisions of the Township’s By-law, as well as importantHighway Traffic Act information related to ATV use(Ontario Regulation 316/3).Ganaraska Hiking TrailAssociation (GHTA)The Oro-Medonte chapter of the Ganaraska Hiking TrailAssociation (GHTA) maintains 18.5km of trail north of theHorseshoe Valley area. The club organizes a programmeof hikes which includes the local area, as well as hikes inthe Owen Sound and Muskoka regions.All are welcome to join in on any hikes.Hiking boots are recommended andwater is a must. For more informationabout the club visit www.ganaraskahiking-trail.caor call Wayne at (705)835-7018.Ice Fishing Safety TipsBefore You Venture Out• Check ice conditions with local ice hut operators orother anglers• Let others know where you’re planning to fish andwhen you plan to return• Wear appropriate clothing and equipment for safetyand comfortUneven Ice• Remember—ice doesn’t freeze at a uniform thickness• Near-shore ice is often much thicker and safer thanice farther out, especially at the start of the winterseason• Check thickness regularly with a spud bar or auger asyou move farther out• Ice that formed over flowing water, springs, pressurecracks, old ice holes or around the mouths of riversand streams can be weaker than surrounding iceColour• Clear blue ice is the strongest• White or opaque ice is much weaker• Stay away from ice that looks honeycombed,common during thaws or in the springDriving on Ice• Be careful when driving snowmobiles or vehicles overfrozen lakes or rivers• Snowmobiles need at least 20 centimetres (8 inches)of clear blue ice• Light vehicles need 30 centimetres (12 inches) ormore of clear blue ice• Double the thickness if the ice is white or opaque• Heavy snow on a frozen lake or river slows down thefreezing processSource: Government of Ontariowww.ontario.ca/environment-and-energy/ice-fishingGHTA Winter 2014-15 EventsIn Oro-MedonteSunday, December 7 th | 4:00pm | EasySki, snowshoe, or hike beginning at 4:00pm,followed by a potluck supper, music, and fun at5:30pm.
