Airport Update
LCACC Visits BA’s New Embraer 170
During September, British Airways CityFlyer
took delivery of its fi rst Embraer 170 for operation
at London City Airport. In order to ensure that
community members of the London City Airport
Consultative Committee (LCACC) were acquainted
with these new aircraft and their benefi ts and
impacts, BA CityFlyer Ground Services Manager,
John Scarff escorted a group to the airport to visit
the aircraft.
During the visit, LCACC members were shown
a DVD outlining the aircraft’s capabilities and then
ventured to the airside area where they had free
range within the aircraft cabin, including a visit to the
cockpit with a British Airways pilot.
Members were
advised of the
environmental
effi ciency of the
E170, which is up
to 56% more fuel
effi cient than the
BAe 146 and
RJ100 four engined
jets they will replace.
Planning Approval
Our Future: What happens next?
On 8th July 2009 the London Borough of
Newham granted permission to London City Airport
to increase the number of take off and landings from
roughly 80,000 to 120,000 per year.
The Council’s decision recognises the airport’s
importance in the community, its contribution to the
local economy and the regeneration that the airport
has attracted to East London. Alongside this approval
is a legal agreement (called a Section 106) with the
Council. A Section 106 Agreement is a tool used by
councils to ensure developers, including airports give
back to the communities they operate in. The Section
106 Agreement is a fi ve year agreement and contains
requirements to minimise the impact of the airport’s
operation on local residents and also donations
and activities to provide benefi t to communities
surrounding LCA.
What does the Section 106
Agreement mean for you?
OPERATING HOURS
The airport operating hours have not changed and
there will be no night fl ights. The 24 hour closure
period at weekends remains in place.
EARLY MORNING FLIGHTS
The number of early morning fl ights allowed at LCA
between 0630-0659 remains at 6.
In addition, a further reduction in early fl ights
has been implemented meaning only 2 of
the 6 fl ights in this time period can operate between
0630 and 0645 hours.
NOISE
LCA has four fi xed noise monitors located around its
boundaries to measure airborne aircraft noise. The
airport also monitors the departure tracks of aircraft to
ensure that they follow the standard departure route.
A system of penalties and credits is already in place to
penalise aircraft which breach the airport’s noise limits,
or reward aircraft below the permitted limits.
We will continue to adhere to measures already
in place to reduce the noise impacts of airport
operations and are committed, through the Section
106, to updating and improving the equipment and
methods used to measure airport noise, including
ground noise. Restrictions on engine ground
running for testing and maintenance reasons will
continue as previously.
SOUND INSULATION
The airport is already required to sound insulate
properties, including public buildings, within a 57dB
noise contour; 6dB less than most airports. The new
Section 106 Agreement provides for the checking
of previously installed sound insulation and LCA will
provide further insulation to any homes closer to the
airport which are within the 66dB noise contour, of
which there are very few.
NOISE ACTION PLAN
All major UK airports are required
to produce a Noise Action Plan.
LCA’s draft plan is available at
www.londoncityairport.com/ /
noiseactionplan. This plan is
separate from the LCA planning
approval, and required by the
Department for Environment, Food od and Rural
Affairs (DEFRA). Please view the draft NAP and
provide your comments at our website.

AIR QUALITY
LCA already monitors local air quality. The new
Section 106 Agreement requires the formulation of
an Air Quality Action Plan to manage and reduce
emissions from aircraft and operational vehicles.
In addition the airport is required to investigate
aircraft odour in and around the site.
TRANSPORT
LCA has always
been committed to
promoting the use
of public transport to
its passengers and
staff. Around 70%
or our passengers
travel to and from
the airport by public
transport – more than any other UK airport.
DLR - The airport will pay £2.5 million to
DLR in phases to help with the cost of
introducing extra capacity with three-car
trains and higher frequencies to and from
the airport.
BUS - LCA is required to pay £20,000
towards the improvement of local bus
services to serve the airport.
ROADS - LCA has already paid £50,000
towards an assessment to see if the airport
brings unacceptable traffi c to the local area.
If the airport is found to be causing a problem
with road traffi c, it will be required to pay up to
£190,000 towards improving road capacity.
PARKING - LCA will pay £35,000 each
year for fi ve years at the request of Newham
Council to investigate a scheme of parking
controls in areas around the airport.
TRAVEL PLAN – LCA is to develop a new
Travel Plan to encourage passengers and
staff to travel to the airport using green
transport modes where possible - bus,
train, bicycle or walking. The Travel Plan is
currently being drafted and will continue
to be monitored in the coming years to
ensure sustainable travel options are easily
accessible.
SUSTAINABILITY
Within two years from the date of the Section 106
Agreement, the airport will prepare a sustainability
strategy. This plan is about limiting the impact of
the airport’s operations. It will cover environmental
issues such as waste (including recycling), the
effi cient use of energy and water and will also
seek ways to reduce the carbon emissions of
airport buildings over which LCA has control.
COMMUNITY
LCA will contribute more than £1 million over
two years towards landscaping improvements
and community initiatives in the 57 dB contour
surrounding the airport. This is in addition to its
existing comprehensive community programme
focusing on sponsorship and in-kind donations to
local projects.
EDUCATION – the airport’s community
relations team will continue to run
programmes to support primary and
secondary education in Newham, Tower
Hamlets and Greenwich. This includes
the airport’s long running work experience
programme. The Section 106 details
programmes and schools in which they
should be delivered.
EMPLOYMENT - LCA already seeks to
recruit staff from the local area and it has
long been committed to staff training. The
new Section 106 Agreement seeks to
complement what the airport already does
in this area, including a fi nancial contribution
up to £120,000 per year towards local
employment initiatives.
What happens if LCA does not
comply with the Section 106?
LCA is keen to ensure that the airport grows
and develops in the most sustainable way
possible. To encourage the airport to meet
all the commitments made in the agreement,
the Council has ensured that it has the power
to stop the airport increasing the number
of fl ights if it is found not to be following the
commitments summarised here.
London City Airport’s Biggest Ever Fun Day!
This year’s 13th annual LCA Fun Day
& Air Show was a huge success,
attracting almost 26,000 visitors and
raising £41,000 for Richard House
Children’s Hospice.
Fun Day 2009 had a sporting theme with an
opportunity for visitors to celebrate the Olympic and
Paralympic Games coming to Newham, the
airport’s home borough, in 2012. A host of
activities were laid on for visitors of all ages, from
climbing walls and race tracks to a basketball
court operated by NBA. West Ham United Football
Coaches were on hand to offer tips to budding
players on an infl atable football pitch and visitors were
also given an exclusive opportunity to have their photo
taken with the Barclays Premiership Trophy.
Baboo
Switzerland-based
airline Baboo recently
commenced services
to Geneva from London
City Airport. The carrier
is operating a twice
daily service operated
on Baboo’s 74-seat
Q400 aircraft, (the
same aircraft type used
by Luxair at LCA).
In addition to the direct
service to Geneva,
passengers can travel
onto the Italian cities of
Venice and Florence.
Terminal Upgrade
Crowds gathered all
around the Royal
Docks to see the only
air show in London,
with sensational aircraft
like the Hurricane XII
Z5140 and a rare Spitfi re
ML407 taking to East
London’s skies.
The Fun Day’s major sponsor, British Airways,
offered visits on board two BA CityFlyer RJ100
aircraft, rides on de-icing rigs and a mobile fl ight
simulator. The airline also delivered cabin crew
workshops for children using mini uniforms and
an aircraft mock-up, as well as giving away
thousands of kids activity packs.
We have noticed a change
in passenger trends.
Passengers travelling
from London City Airport
are arriving together on
the DLR and using online
check-in facilities far more
than traditional check-in
desks. This means that
during the busy periods
the passenger search area is very busy.
LCA is responding to this by installing four additional security lanes,
and whilst doing so we are going to take the opportunity to expand
the departure lounge by infi lling the fi rst fl oor of the terminal building,
providing passengers with more space and comfort.
This multi-million pound project will require extensive reorganisation works
to terminal building, which we intend to complete by autumn 2010.
.

Draft Noise Action Plan
What is it about? The noise action plan has been drafted to manage the issues of noise
arising from London City Airport’s operations over the next fi ve years. The plan has been drafted
in response to a directive published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
which requires airport operators to prepare draft plans designed to manage noise issues.
When is it happening?
The airport’s 16 week public consultation runs until
15 January 2010. During the consultation period,
local communities, councils and other stakeholders
are invited to comment on the airport’s draft plan.
How can I see the plan?
Hard copies of the draft plan are available in your
local library or visit www.londoncityairport.com/
Newham to New York
Ascension Eagles
Cheerleaders at the
JFK Route Launch
On 29 September 2009
London City Airport (LCA) LCY-JFK
was proud to launch services
to New York (JFK) from London City Airport
with British Airways (mainline). London City
Airport staff were joined by Willie Walsh, BA’s
Chief Executive, to celebrate this fantastic day
and welcome the fi rst ever service to New
York from LCA.
To liven up the launch, airport community
partner, the Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders
from Custom House took great pleasure
in wowing guests with their performances
before the departure of the new generation
Airbus 318. This aircraft was approved for use at LCA in Spring 2007
and is the “baby” of the Airbus family, bringing the added benefi ts of
new technology with cleaner, quieter, more effi cient engines to LCA.
This business class service with 32 lie-fl at beds will operate alongside
the existing routes served by British Airways CityFlyer, the whollyowned
BA subsidiary with a base at London City Airport.
The outbound fl ight to JFK
stops for fuel at Shannon Airport
in Ireland, where passengers pre-clear US Customs and Immigration.
This allows passengers to exit the airport in New York quickly as
they have already completed the necessary procedures. The return
fl ight to London is a direct service, as the longer runway at New York
allows the aircraft to carry more fuel. Passengers can sleep overnight
before landing at LCA in the morning, ready for a day at the offi ce!
London City Airport recently donated
£1200 to purchase a new pony for Newham
Riding School in Beckton. The pony, named
‘Just William’, was acquired in memory of Bill
Dunlop who was a long standing member of
the airport’s consultative committee and the
founder of the riding school. Just William
was welcomed to the school by Richard
Gooding OBE, the airport’s Chief Executive
at a small celebration event attended by
Bill’s friends and family including Bill’s
daughters Julia and Margaret, along with
members of the airport’s Community Team
and Consultative Committee.
Three Local Students Join London City Airport’s
2009 University Prize Scheme
August saw London City Airport launch the third
year of its University Prize Scheme. This year we
received applications from residents of Newham,
Tower Hamlets and Greenwich.
Three successful students were selected from
Woolwich Polytechnic School in Greenwich,
Newham College and Havering 6th Form College
(Beckton Resident). The students will receive
£2000 for each year of their degree, two weeks’
paid work experience every summer, an airport
management mentor and the opportunity to enrol
on the airport’s in-house training programmes.
They join fi ve UPS students already enrolled on
the scheme in 2007 and 2008.
One student currently in his third year of the LCA
University Prize Scheme said, “I think that the UPS
scheme is unique and worthwhile. I have not only
had the opportunity to undertake training courses
£41,644.91 Donation!
A grand total of £41,644.91 was raised by
airport staff, local communities and airport
passengers in the past year in aid of Richard
House Children’s Hospice in Beckton. Richard
House is a purpose built children’s hospice,
which has been LCA’s chosen charity for
14 years.
In addition to funds raised from the LCA
Fun Day, airport staff have participated in
various fundraising activities from marathons,
triathlons and hiking trails around India to help
raise our highest annual donation ever.
Cheque Presentation
which have helped
me in my studies
but have gained life
skills. I have worked
in various airport
departments and
found it very valuable
as trying to fi nd a job
as a graduate in the
current climate is very
hard. Lastly having
the support from
my mentor and the
The Lucky Three Students
Community Relations
Team is an added bonus because they are always
there to support us.”
This programme forms part of the 2009
LCA S106 Agreement.

Airport Puts Local Youngsters’ Basketball Skills to the Test
London City Airport in partnership with
Newham Council encouraged teams to
jump, dribble and slam dunk during the
school holidays through the
recent London City Airport 3-vs-3
Basketball Tournament.
The aim of the tournament was to bring
together youngsters from across Newham
and encourage them to participate in
this fast-paced and exciting sport which
requires quick thinking, teamwork and
good communication which all of the
players can make good use of both on
and off the court.
The three lucky winners from each age group were awarded tickets to the Four Nations Basketball
Tournament at the airport’s private suite at the O2 Arena. Over 100 local youngsters took park in the
tournament which formed part of the airport’s health and wellbeing for work programme, encouraging
local people to get fi t and healthy for employment.
Harry Potter Literacy
Competition
London City Airport recently ran a literacy
