Welcome
While our last edition was only in
April, we have a bumper newsletter
for you this June to include
some of our latest projects both in
the airport’s operation and community
programme. You will see
our advertisement on page two for
community representatives to the
London City Airport Consultative
Committee (LCACC), a committe
which has been in existence since
before the airport opened in 1987.
Previously, some of community representatives, who
attend the LCACC on behalf of local residents, have
been recruited through Newham’s Community Forums.
However the way the Forums operate has recently
changed and as such we are seeking applications (see
page 2) from local people willing to participate. Greenwich
and Tower Hamlets representatives can be viewed
at www.lcacc.org.
One of our biggest community projects of late has been
the “Take off into Work” programme for local people
looking for assistance in applying to work at the airport.
This training into work programme has been developed
with the assistance of some of our on-site employers
such as HMS Host (airport catering), Cobalt Ground
Services (passenger handling), Nuance Group (tax and
duty free store) and WH Smith (retailers), who alongside
the airport operator are providing work placements,
training and interviews to candidates on the programme.
See page four for details of how to apply.
Finally, I look forward to seeing you all at this year’s Fun
Day on Saturday 4 July from 2.30pm - it will be another
great show. If you have any questions or queries on this
newsletter or the airport in general, please do contact
me on 020 7646 0042 or elizabeth@lcy.co.uk
This newsletter is printed on recycled paper
Airport Update
Newham to New York – East London
Takes a Bite of the Big Apple
This autumn British Airways will commence
services to New York (JFK) from London City
Airport. This innovative business class
service with 32 lie-flat beds will operate
alongside the existing routes served by British
Airways Cityflyer, the wholly-owned BA
subsidiary from a base at London City Airport.
The outbound flight to JFK will stop for fuel at
Shannon Airport in Ireland, where
passengers will pre-clear US Customs. This
will allow a quick exit in New York having
already completed the necessary
customs and immigration procedures.
The return flight to London will be a non-stop
service, allowing passengers to sleep overnight
before landing at LCA in the morning.
There will be two flights daily in each direction.
This exciting route will use a new
generation aircraft, the Airbus 318, which was
approved for use at LCA in Spring 2007. The
twin-engined jet is the “baby” of the Airbus
family and brings added benefits of new
technology with cleaner, quieter, more fuel
efficient engines. In addition, passengers will
be able to send texts, emails and access the
internet onboard - a first for
transatlantic flights.
LONDON CITY AIRPORT
CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE
is seeking community representatives from Newham
Would you like to represent your community on matters
relating to the airport?
Are you able to attend quarterly meetings from 4.30pm on
weekdays?
Are you willing to provide your contact details for the
Committee’s website and local media?
If you can answer YES to the questions above, you may be
interested in applying to become a community representative on the
London City Airport Consultative Committee (LCACC).
The LCACC is a consultative body with a membership representing local communities, local and
public authorities, the airport and airport users. The committee is not a decision making body but an
organised forum to inform the diverse range of stakeholders of current issues relating to London City
Airport and the aviation industry and seek feedback.
Representatives are sought for a three year term and will be selected according to the criteria listed
above.
Airport Update
Exciting Embraer Tests
at London City Airport
Back in March, London City Airport had a
visitor – the Embraer 190SR. This new
generation aircraft forms part of British
Airways’ plans to replace their current fleet
of BAe RJ85 and RJ100 aircraft at London
City Airport. Over the course of a week, the
Embraer 190SR conducted over 40 take off
and landings to trial its steep approach
technology, parking ability on LCA aircraft
stands and also to conduct an intensive
noise evaluation. If the trials are successful
and the aircraft meets the strict operating
and noise control criteria unique to London
City Airport, the Embraer 190SR will be
approved for operations at LCA alongside
the Embraer 170 which undertook successful
trials in 2007.
New Routes Routes Ceased
Pilots Gather for
Biannual Forum
During March, chief and senior pilots from
all airlines operating at London City Airport
gathered at the biannual London City Airport
Pilots’ Forum.
The Forum is a two day conference hosted
by the airport operator, attended by the
airlines and the aiport Safety and
Operations Directors, plus regional and
local staff from National Air Traffic Services.
The LCA Pilots’ Forum provides pilots and
key ground personnel an opportunity to
discuss issues and matters relating to the
airport’s operation to maintain and improve
safety. The Forum also includes discussions
on operational and environmental
improvements that could be made at
London City Airport, on topics such as
runway occupancy, punctuality, performance
and air traffic control. An example is
minimising aircraft holding times both onthe
ground and in the air, which reduces the
amount of time aircraft engines are active.
In the first half of 2009, the airport has, as expected in the current economic climate,
experienced some route changes.
Isle of Man (Aer Arann) January Dublin (British Airways) March
Billund (British Airways) January Berlin (Lufthansa) March
Nantes (British Airways) April Oslo (SAS) March
Plymouth (Air SouthWest) April Geneva (Air France) April
Newquay (Air SouthWest) April Manchester (VLM) June
The Forum
New York (British Airways) October Stockholm (SAS) June
While British Airways and Air France have stopped services to Dublin and Geneva, these routes
are still accessible from London City Airport with other airlines (Cityjet and Swiss respectively). The
airport currently has interest from and discussion with other airlines about providing some of the
routes lost this year.
Mentor Mandy
Every year London City Airport Limited, which
is the airport operator and largest employer
based on-site at the airport, celebrates the
achievements of its staff. Each “Employee of
the Month” from January to December is
invited to an event, where the overall
“Employee of the Year”, is announced.
In 2008, London City Airport Limited also
launched a “Volunteer of the Year” award, with
a £300 reward to the staff member who made
the most significant contribution to the Airport
Community Programme. Nominations were
made by the Community Team based on the
significance of the contribution depending on
the individual staff members’ skills and
circumstances.
Airport’s partnership with Poplar, Blackwall
and District Rowing Club, Rupal attended the
annual “Poplar Regatta”, which is held on the
Royal Albert Dock to the north of the airport
runway. The Regatta provides competitive
rowing for both able bodied and adaptive
rowers and is supported by the airport
through its Health and Wellbeing programme.
This year the Regatta saw more entries than
ever and the competition saw additional
control, communication and safety boats,
London City Airport continues to work with the
Local Planning Authority (Newham) to finalise
the legal agreement required to
implement the planning application approved
in October 2008. The application sought to
