Mentor Mandy Every year London City Airport Limited, which is the airport operator and largest employer based on-site at the airport, celebrates the achievements of its staff. Each “Employee of the Month” from January to December is invited to an event, where the overall “Employee of the Year”, is announced. In 2008, London City Airport Limited also launched a “Volunteer of the Year” award, with a £300 reward to the staff member who made the most significant contribution to the Airport Community Programme. Nominations were made by the Community Team based on the significance of the contribution depending on the individual staff members’ skills and circumstances. The 2008 Volunteer of the Year was Mandy Young Rowers Enjoy Regatta Rupal Patel from the Airport Community Team recently learnt all about a new sport – rowing. Through London City Airport’s partnership with Poplar, Blackwall and District Rowing Club, Rupal attended the annual “Poplar Regatta”, which is held on the Royal Albert Dock to the north of the airport runway. The Regatta provides competitive rowing for both able bodied and adaptive rowers and is supported by the airport through its Health and Wellbeing programme. This year the Regatta saw more entries than ever and the competition saw additional control, communication and safety boats, provided by London City Airport’s sponsorship. Young Rowers at the Regatta Doherty, Terminal Team Leader, who was in hot competition with three other staff members for the crown. Mandy was selected by her peers for her commitment to a local person on a three-month work placement at the airport, who had experienced health difficulties and was looking to get back into work. Mandy acted as a mentor, coaching and supporting him through his placement and kept in regular contact with the partner charity that recommended him. Airport Staff Play at the Boleyn London City Airport’s Team 2008 Winner Mandy Doherty A team of airport staff recently jumped at the opportunity to play on West Ham United’s home pitch at the Boleyn ground. In a corporate tournament in aid of the airport’s chosen charity, Richard House Children’s Hospice in Beckton, the lads from departments including the Airport Fire Service, Ramp Services, the Jet Centre and Finance competed in an afternoon of football which raised hundreds of pounds. Overall, our team placed fourth amongst other staff teams from organisations including London Overground, EMI Music, the London Borough of Newham and Canary Wharf Group. 6
