Council has agreed to a major investmentin the creation of a brand new leisure facility for the Borough. Pages10 - 11 of this edition feature the artist’s impression of what thenew facility may look like and includes detailed fl oor plans of thenew modern amenities. These will include a new health and fi tnesssuite, children’s recreation areas and improved accessibility for all.In line with the other signifi cant regeneration projects that we havecompleted, the new leisure facilities will be a further legacy to theBorough come the reorganisation of local government. In a bid tocontinue to meet our recycling targets, Council will be rolling out itsbrown bin recycling initiative and, in conjunction with Bryson House,a new red kerbie box. Full details of what can be deposited into eachbin and box are on page 15. We have also been working hard onanother fl agship project, the Carrickfergus Cohesion Strategy, which,whilst celebrating and protecting the Borough town’s historic quality,strives to regenerate the town centre, and create improved linkagesand a more aesthetically pleasing environment for all residents andvisitors to the town. Carrickfergus Museum is organising a special exhibitionto commemorate the centenary of the birth of one of the Borough’scelebrated citizens, legendary poet, writer and broadcaster, LouisMacNeice. The exhibition will take place from September toDecember and will feature unique family photographs and artefactsalong with a community outreach arts programme of informative talksand workshops, helping to raise awareness of his important literarylegacy. Full details can be found on page 8. Council will shortly belaunching a pioneering new website featuring a comprehensive guideto all of our services and facilitating online purchase of chargeableservices as well as an exciting ‘e-club’. 03New look websiteCarrickfergus Borough Council will shortlybe launching an exciting new website,providing a comprehensive guide to allof its services as well as promoting allof the Borough’s attractions.The site is a pioneering move away fromthe typical design of local governmentwebsites and is based on our strikingcorporate brand. The improved site willbe much easier to navigate with clearlydefined and colour-coded sections underthe headings of tourism, environment,marina, living, historical, what’s on,economy and civic. The site will containmuch more information on the Boroughand, not least its historical significance,offering residents the opportunity toconveniently purchase chargeableCouncil services on-line. Employees, DavidAnthony and Rab Mogey, not onlyworked in Thiepval Wood and in thetrenches, but also helped to restore across erected beside the monumentto the French dead, in memory ofthe Irish soldiers who fell on FrenchSommeAssociationvolunteerspictured in theFrench villageof Guillemont.ground during the First World War. Therestoration work involved cleaning ofthe approaches, painting of the gatesand restoration of the stone, under theguidance of Carol Walker, Director ofthe Somme Association.
