Coaching StaffXavier finished 25-9 overall in 2006-07, Miller’s third year as the XavierUniversity head coach. His tireless efforts as a recruiter and his defensive expertiseare key components to the Wildcat coaching staff.He was promoted to associate head coach following the 2010-11season.Whitford’s defensive prowess continues to be a point of pride, asthe 2011-12 squad limited opponents to an average of 62.7 pointsper game in 35 outings, the lowest scoring defense figure for theprogram since 1985-86. Further, Arizona held 12 opponents to lessthan 60 points in 2011-12.As the Wildcats rolled to the 2011 Pac-10 regular season championshipand an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament,UA saw its defensive numbers improve dramatically, as theopposition’s scoring average and three-point field goal percentagedropped by nearly four points each. UA’s .293 three-point field goalpercentage defense figure ranked fifth nationally and was the lowestin program history.It continues a positive trend for the Wildcats defense, as thesquad has allowed fewer points per game in each of the last threeseasons: 72.0 ppg in 2009-10, 67.9 ppg in 2010-11 and 62.7 ppg in2011-12.Whitford spent four seasons at Xavier (2005-09), helping theMusketeers amass a 103-35 (.746) record, three Atlantic-10Conference championships, one A-10 tournament title and fourNCAA Tournament appearances. The 2007-08 XU squad advancedto the West Regional Final.Prior to his tenure in Cincinnati, Whitford spent 11 seasons on thestaff at Miami University (Ohio) for Charlie Coles, the last eight asthe top assistant. In that span, the RedHawks won better than 60percent of its games (201-130), captured the 2004-05 Mid-AmericanConference championship and advanced to the 1999 NCAATournament’s Sweet 16.Whitford’s first two seasons in Oxford, Ohio, were as an administrativeassistant in 1994-95 and 1995-96. He became a full-timeassistant on Coles’s staff in 1997 and was promoted to the topassistant in June 1998. All told, he was a part of three NCAATournament appearances (1995, ’97, ’99), two NIT berths (1996,2005) and four MAC regular-season championships (1995, ’97, ’99,2005) while at Miami.Whitford, 41, graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1994with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He served as a managerfor the Badger men’s basketball program for three seasons. Arizonahead coach Sean Miller was an assistant coach for Wisconsin duringthe 1992-93 campaign, Whitford’s junior season at UW.A native of Madison, Wis., Whitford and his wife, Amber, havetwo sons, Liam and Spencer. XUposted a school-record 30 wins and advanced to the NCAATournament’s Elite Eight in his debut in 2007-08.Prior to Xavier, Richardson was the Director of Basketball for theNew York Gauchos/Teamwork Foundation in the Bronx, N.Y., from2005-07. He also served as an assistant coach at St. Raymond’sHigh School for Boys in 2004 and was the head coach for ninth and10th-grade players in the New York Gauchos system in 2003.Richardson’s U-18 red team captured the gold medal at the 2007USA Basketball Men’s Youth Development Festival, making him theyoungest coach ever to win the event, and the first AAU coach to beselected by USA Basketball as a festival head coach.Richardson was an assistant coach at Marist College in 2004-05,where he coordinated the Red Foxes’ recruiting, scouting andindividual work outs, focusing on guard play and offensive skilldevelopment. He spent three seasons as an assistant at MonroeCollege, an NJCAA program in the Bronx. His 2002-03 club went31-3, won the Region 15 and District 3 titles and finished fifth at theNJCAA national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.A 1998 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstownwith a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and management,Richardson’s coaching career began at his alma mater as theassociate head coach in 1999.
