Technische Universität Braunschweig<br />

Dr. Jörn Pachl is a full professor and head of the Institute of Railway Systems Engineering and Traffic Safety at the<br />

TU Braunschweig. Before joining the university, Dr. Pachl was an infrastructure manager in the Hamburg region of<br />

German Railways. While his areas of teaching cover railway infrastructure, railway operation, and railway signalling,<br />

research concentrates on the interface between operation and signaling. Dr. Pachl is author and co-author of several<br />

textbooks, which were published in Germany and in the USA and have become standard tutorials for academic<br />

railway programs at many universities worldwide.<br />

University of Newcastle upon Tyne<br />

Dr. Marin Marinov is a Research Associate within the Rail Freight and Logistics Group of NewRail. His Ph.D.<br />

research was on Analysis and Evaluation of Formation Yard Performances. He has worked as a teaching assistant<br />

and researcher in the Transportation Systems branch of the MIT/Portugal programme, where he lectured on Transportation<br />

Planning and Performance Assessment, Freight Transport and Logistics Processes as well as Railway<br />

Engineering. His interests involve: Rail Freight; Logistics; Rail Organization and Management; Rail Performances;<br />

Rail Yards and Terminals; Urban Freight; Safety and Security in Rail Systems; Rail Marketing; as well as Rail Education<br />

and Training.<br />

Thomas Zunder is the Rail Freight & Logistics Group Manager. He has over 22 years experience in supply chain<br />

management, primarily logistics, procurement and distribution combined with academic research in the field of<br />

freight logistics. Current Work: He is co-ordinator of the SPECTRUM project. Logistics benchmarking and standards;<br />

research into satellite navigation and vehicle wayfinding; ongoing research into urban freight and city logistics;<br />

research into the optimisation of intermodal freight using optimised systems; systems architectures and intermodal<br />

freight; eLogistics field research and gap analysis; rail freight logistics and operations on a continental cross<br />

border scale.<br />

Sapienza Università di Roma – Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile Edile e Ambientale (DICEA)<br />

Stefano Ricci, Associate Professor, Ph.D., Civil Engineer, Teaching Transportation Economy and Technics, Railway<br />

Transportation and Maritime Transportation. Active in European research for European Commission DG TREN,<br />

Research and <strong>IN</strong>FSO and in many transport sectors in Italy. Areas of specialization for both research and practical<br />

applications: transport planning, railway operation and safety, environmental assessment of transport systems,<br />

public transport operation, maritime transport. Recent EU projects: CLEANER-DRIVE, ECORailS, ELEDRIVE,<br />

EURNEX, HEROE, SELCAT, TILEMATT, UTOPIA.<br />

Universitatea Politehnica din Bucuresti - Facultatea Transporturi, Telecomenzi si Electronica in Transporturi<br />

Florin Nemtanu: He is PhD and senior lecturer at Transport Faculty, Telematics & Electronics for Transport and he<br />

is involved in ITS from more than 10 years. He is teaching Transport Systems, IT for transports, ITS Architecture<br />

and is involved in organization of ITS Master Programme. He is General Secretary of ITS Romania, Senior Member<br />

of IEEE (ITS and Vehicular technologies societies), Deputy chairman of European ICT Expert Group, Vice-president<br />

of PMI Romanian Chapter and member of faculty's consilium.<br />

Radu Timnea: He is PhD and senior lecturer at Transport Faculty, Telematics & Electronics for Transport and he is<br />

involved in ITS from more than 15 years. He is teaching ITS systems for Railway, Electronics and Electronic Devices.<br />

He is project manager for European and national educational and research projects.<br />

Universiteit Gent – Afdeling Mobiliteit en Ruimtelijke Planning (AMRP)<br />

Giuseppe Pace, MSc in Civil engineering. He is researcher at the Italian National Research Council since 1994,<br />

and visiting researcher at the AMRP since 2008. His main field of research are sustainable transport, regional and<br />

urban planning, and regional economy. Currently, he’s involved in a research on “Learning Ports for Developing<br />

Sustainable Cities”, and in other projects on sustainable mobility and applications of renewable energy in the transports.<br />

As National Seconded Expert, he was responsible at the European Commission for the evaluation and<br />

monitoring of the TEN-T programme and for questions of management of large infrastructure projects (2003-2007).<br />

Yıldız Technical University<br />

İsmail Şahin: Dr. Şahin received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Yıldız Technical University<br />

(YTU) in 1985. He started his academic carrier as a research assistant in the Transportation Division of the Department<br />

of Civil Engineering of YTU, where he received his master’s and Ph.D. degrees. Dr. Sahin currently is the<br />

head of Transportation Division and lectures various railway engineering courses particularly in planning, design<br />

and operations fields. His research interests fall into the subject matters in planning and operations of ground<br />

transportations systems.<br />

Gökçe Aydın: Mr. Aydın graduated from the Department of Environmental Engineering of Middle East Technical<br />

University in 2002. He completed his master’s degree in Transportation Programme at the Yıldız Technical University,<br />

where he is currently working as a research assistant. Mr. Aydın is presently enrolled in the Transportation<br />

doctoral degree programme at YTU, in which he will focus on train timetabling and re-scheduling problems.<br />
