The legend around is translatedas, “The American Congress to John Egar Howard, commanderof an infantry regiment.” The reverse bears an inscription is sevenlines within a wreath which is translated as, “Charging suddenlyupon the wavering lines of the enemy, he gave an outstandingexample of military courage at the Battle of Cowpens January 17,1781.
